As seen on celebrities, on your Instagram feed and on the runway, this sporty eyewear trend is everywhere. Stella McCartney combined her sporty eyewear looks with the wraparound specs, Each X Other showcased rainbow mirrored designs by Poppy Lissiman, and Vetements added studs for an edgy look. Sporty sunnies were also seen at Nicopanda, Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Zadig and Voltaire, Kenzo and MSMG to name a few.

TRIANGULAR

Saint Laurent sent disco-inspired upside-down triangles down the runway, whereas Burberry had an especially unique take on the triangle lens, with the lenses having a slightly rounded top and being downturned. Marni had their models wearing a very opposite style, playing on cat-eye triangle eyewear style.

RECTANGULAR

Some more bold than others; the 90’s rectangular eyewear shape is back and it´s loved by the masses. A sleek but wearable sunglass trend, this humble shape will go with whatever outfit you choose. They’re either very sharp and defined or slightly curved and rounded, but they always look chic. Off-White’s rectangular sunglasses came in deep black or neon colours, Self-Portrait used rectangular lenses for a safari green pair with thin metal temples and Y/Project offers a simplistic designs featuring deep brown lenses and golden metal details.

Oversized sunglasses are back – but this season bigger and bolder than ever. Designers played fast and loose with traditional eyewear shapes and created fascinating variations. From classic 70´s round sunnies to the butterfly shape, nothing is hotter right now than this season’s D-shape. Miu Miu, Elie Saab and Rick Owens are just a few of the designers responsible for exaggerating the popular and fun D-frame in order to create a new level of oversized.

Get the look with Christian Roth Rock n’ Roth sunglasses or LOEWE´s Tyra pair for the perfect 80´s bold statement. For an eclectic and luxurious style, try Gucci´s distinctive bold cat-eye frame covered in sparkling crystals or for a budget friendly look, try Bershka black maxi cateye sunglasses.

TRANSPARENCY

The transparent eyewear look is nothing new, but the combination of translucent frames in funky colours with matching lenses has never been hotter. It´s a cool, relaxed and sophisticated look, which will brighten up any outfit. So which colour suits you? Red Karen Walker sunnies, Blue Mapima Paula glasses or the colour of the season – yellow – used by several designers; Max Mara, Prada, Gucci and Maison Margiela.

Ignore those age-based fashion rules. You are never too old to flaunt a sweet little bow (or big as the case may be). With plenty of the feminine embellishment appearing at London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019, it is set to be a massive trend that is going to rule next season.

Bows aren’t simply limited to one style: the pretty adornment graced sleeves, waists, necklines and ponytails on the catwalks of London Fashion Week SS19 and beyond. From massive bows draped over the neck and shoulders at Erdem and Richard Quinn, through bows adorning black dresses at Celine and Dries Van Noten, to more delicate and elegant bows at Emilia Wickstead and Valentino adding a romantic touch on the runway, it is a throwback trend we cannot resist.

If this hasn’t persuaded you to go ahead and rock that pretty bow, well, not only has it been gracing catwalks, but stylish stars like Margot Robbie and Sienna Miller have accessorised with velvet bows on the red carpet. Royals too, the Duchess of Cambridge has been spotted sporting her own black velvet bow in her ponytail in two recent appearances.

Ultimately, if your fascination goes beyond gift wrapping your favourite Christmas presents, expect to see this trend in the most unexpected of places next Spring.

You’ve fallen down the metaphorical rabbit hole straight into wonderland. You arrive at a door but it’s too small to get through, luckily you find and drink a potion to shrink you to the perfect size. You see a runway through the door, a catwalk of pastel clad figures that scream ‘it’s time for tea’. But, what most of all catches your eye is their…handbags? Cake or handbag? At this point it’s hard to tell as they move past you in a saccharine swirl of sweetness. Frosting, flowers and fondant decorations, these have to be cakes right? Wrong.

Exquisitely adorned with flowers and pearls, these bags give credence to the term ‘arm candy’. If you’re ever in need of a tea time ensemble Manish Arora has got it in the bag – quite literally! King of cotton candy concoctions himself, the Indian designer has dished out a serving of wondrous creations for SS19, with accessories that would make Marie Antoinette gasp in awe.

Bold prints and a vibrant array of colour accompanied these couture confections. Frills, florals, fun: this collection screams springtime and we love it. Intricate embellishments and pastel love hearts provide the icing to this ‘wonderland’ ensemble: a collection which truly takes the cake for the most charming, if not mouth-watering show we’ve seen so far.

So the next time you’re invited to afternoon tea with the girls, take a leaf out of the Arora recipe book of fashion, burst forth like a wonderfully iced masterpiece, ready to assert your newfound mantra; ‘let them eat cake’.

Japan has been a hub for pop culture for a couple of decades now: with the influx of anime reaching a large western audience, Japanese music such as J-pop and J-rock again being widely received in the West. The fashion however has made the strongest impact.

Tokyo street style, and the fashions of those who walk through Harajuku, one of Tokyo’s most stylish places, has graced the West with some of the coolest, freshest and wonderfully strangest looks we’ve seen so far. Big brands have adopted Japanese characters into their stores, their designs and even the language has been adopted into western fashion.

Most recently Primark have been pioneers for making lovable Japanese cartoons into cute and wearable items. Pusheen made a huge debut in Primark and has been received extremely well, with new themed garments coming out each season, including one of the most recent additions, that’s right, Pusheen themed Halloween socks. Primark has also embraced Gudetama, a lazy egg Sanrio character which I’m sure we can all relate to, donning phrases like ‘reasons to get out of bed..none’.

Whilst a lot of brands have adopted Hello Kitty possibly the most famous Sanrio character into their designs, brands like Forever 21 are taking the Japanese aesthetic to a whole new level. Forever 21 have recently released a range of T-shirts with logos from Jurassic park and other bright graphic prints complete with Japanese writing. The appeal of Japanese writing meant it has made its way to fashion in the West no problem, as many people love the illustrative styles it’s been presented in.

In 2017 Akira did a collaboration with Supreme. Akira is a post-apocalyptic Japanese animated movie from 1988 which paved the way for Japanese pop culture’s growth in the West. The collection featured art from the creator Katsuhiro Otomo, and gave street style a Japanese edge, a great collection for fans of the movie also.

Japanese style art has made its way into high fashion time and time again, most recently with the Ben Frost X Moschino collaboration for Moschino’s Fall/Winter 2018 capsule collection. Among pop art inspired illustrations there was a couple of designs that resembled Anime characters, bringing Japanese culture into high fashion in a fun and colourful way.

It’s safe to say that Japan’s cultural influence on the West will continue to grow and be received well, as brands and designers continue to be inspired by its bright and colourful culture. Now, let Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo begin!

While we wait to watch the shows with baited breath, here’s an introduction to the main stages to wet your appetite.

Xintiandi is a contemporary and conscious neighbourhood in the heart of Shanghai. It’s home to many fine restaurants and boutiques, as well as being notable as a car-free zone. The whole area embodies the vision for this season’s Xintiandi shows, which are held in the neighbourhood’s Taipinghu Park, to better establish the future fashion environment and encourage individuality and creativity. Ban Xiao Xue will be showing their latest creations tomorrow, an appropriate venue for such a culture and environmentally conscious brand.

Labelhood is all about connecting with the future generation, Gen Z, by encouraging them to use fashion as a method of communication and ‘create their own exclusive aesthetics’. This open-to-the-public event includes runway shows, static presentations, live music, art instillations, and pop-up stores that enables people to encounter brands in a multidimensional fashion. Oude Waag captured the energy of their showcase space brilliantly. If their last show was any indication of how creative and forward thinking they can be, we can’t wait to embrace the future.

The Shanghai International Fashion Showcase includes two international brand release exhibitions from 40+ year old US women’s brand Bebe, and Lebanese designer Mikael Derderian. As well as hosting XCOMMONS: The Journey of E/Motions, an event that looks into how we pay attention to power in contemporary culture and integrate fashion, art and design into aesthetic value while advocating original design.

Galaland is a showcase of brands from home and abroad that debuts at Shanghai Fashion Week on 19th October under the theme of ‘Dan’ which means the rising sun and symbolises the start of the day while demonstrating the pioneering nature of Galaland as a new platform. Few labels bring the Gala in Galaland like Wang Feng. They bring a special brand of elegance to the runway with intricate beadwork and fascinating fabric choices, it’s no wonder they have risen to one of the biggest names in Chinese luxury evening wear.

The final event of Shanghai fashion week is Childrenswear which will oversee 20 different brand launches and static displays over five days. Childrenswear is such a huge market at the moment so it’s no surprise that there’s an entire event dedicated to it.

Shanghai is not like any normal fashion week, yet it still has its fair share of runway shows, some exciting ones to look out for are GAP kids, Angel Chen (the brand of Central Saint Martin’s graduate Chen Anqi) and Converse’s collaboration with Feng Chen Wang. With its shows, exhibits, events and performance, Shanghai takes fashion week right up to the boundaries of what’s expected, and then goes beyond them. The event is set to capture the essence of a fresh new approach to fashion, so make sure you are watching.

Last week Spring Summer ’19 served up designers Aqua Blu Australia, TJ Swim and VDM the Label all showing us what they have to offer, and it did not disappoint.

VDM the Label took us all the way back to the ‘90s with chunky trainers, scrunchies and sports stripes, setting the tone for SS19. Key accessories included clear visors, micro sunglasses and coin necklaces.

For the truly among you, you could always nip down to your local hardware store and purchase a bulk of electrical tape like designer Joel Alvarez. The self-proclaimed ‘King of tape’ is a leading influencer in the body art game and surprised the Miami Swim audience with his innovative designs. By mixing a variety of colours and patterns, the designer plays with the female form in amazing ways. Who knew electrical tape could be so evocative?
