Love in the Flesh

Hosted by former Love Island contestant Zara McDermott, ‘Love in the Flesh’ compares couples’ connections that are formed through online-dating apps to those made face to face.

The one-week experience at a Greek beach house sees couples who have been speaking online finally meet with their match in the flesh. With a mixture of dates and challenges, Zara whittles down the couples to find those who’ve made a ‘real genuine connection’ and give those who haven’t, the opportunity to ‘disconnect.’  In the end, the three final couples are each given a prize, to be claimed after a certain time-period once the show has ended.

Love is Blind

Netflix’s answer to ‘Married at First Sight,’ Love is Blind follows 15 men and women who are looking to find love. For 10 days, the 30 singles speed-date each other using ‘pods’ (rooms specifically designed to allow them to converse without seeing one another).  Over the course of the 10 days, relationships deepen and for some lead to a marriage proposal. If accepted, the couples meet face to face and set off to the next stage, the couples retreat.

During the retreat, the couples spend more time together in this honeymoon-esque setting and become more physically intimate. They also meet the other successful couples who made it through the first stage.

After the couples retreat, each couple move in together and return to their ‘normal lives.’ From then on, the couples meet their partner’s friends and families, and have to take on each other responsibilities, all as part of a build up to their wedding day. The show culminates at the altar with each couple deciding whether or not to say ‘I do.’

The Ultimatum: Marry or Move on

An experiment that comes from the host and creators of ‘Love Is Blind’. The ultimatum features six long term couples, whereby at the start of the show they enter an experiment to find out whether the grass is greener on the other side, or if they have already found the best match for them in their existing partner. 

The show stages a breakup and goes on to make every contestant enter a trial marriage with someone newly single from a different relationship. After this, they will enter a second three-week trial marriage with their original partner. At the end of the show decide whether they want to propose to the old person or propose to the new or leave the how single.

Love Island

After rebooting in 2015, Love Island has become the ‘Big Brother’ of reality dating shows and a personal fan favourite at Voir. Set in sunny Majorca, Love Island provides an 8-week experience for ‘islanders’ to find love, all the while under constant video surveillance. In order for contestants to remain in the villa, they must remain in a couple with a fellow islander. Over the course of the series, these newly formed relationships are put to the test with a series of challenges, forced re-couplings and the addition of new islanders.

At the end of the series, the winning couple has the opportunity to win £50,000 when the ultimate test occurs. Only one person in the couple wins the money and has to decide whether or not to split it with their other half or walk away having played the biggest game of their lives.

Whilst these shows bring about much needed entertainment to a typical boring night at home, it’s difficult to say that these ‘love games’ portray genuine connection in a relationship. But let’s face it, we’re all a sucker for a show that takes us away from our day-to-day routine, for an hour or so every night!

The platform has coaches and counsellors for any relationship issue, delivering more help than most contemporary relationship agencies, as M.D.D enforces the importance of any issue, big or small, to a relationship or individual. With over 100 packages and lots of happy customers, it’s clear that M.D.D’s director knows her stuff. We’ve asked her some questions to help you with your love life for those of you spending December in Tier 3 Isolation.

We understand that being isolated with your partner might be a topic you’re worrying about, and you wouldn’t be alone: this might be one of the toughest times for relationships, but also one of the most exciting- it’s not often you’ll have this much time to spend together.

Nia is here to help you survive such challenging times and to help see this time through.

What’s your most important piece of advice for couples isolating together for the first time?

“This will feel quite stressful for couples, the emotional stress due to the unpredictability of the future and also financial impact can make individuals irritable and needing their partner’s support more. Due to this the most important thing to do is be patient with each other and understand these are unprecedented circumstances, give your partner space when needed, work in separate rooms and give emotional support if your partner is feeling anxious or stressed about the future – giving assurance you will get through this strenuous period together.”

Establishment can be an important part of communication in relationships: being open and declarative about things we need, want or have can be vital to avoid unnecessary arguments and keep couples from clashing. What do you think needs to be established in the relationship?

“Couples living together need to establish the following:

1. Working hours when quiet time and private time is needed.

2. Establish how you will sustain food supplies i.e grocery stores or food delivery service.

3. Personal boundaries for each individual i.e house rules to avoid conflict.

4. Write up a chores list that can be divided between the two of you.

5. Organise an ‘at home date night’ once a week i.e Netflix, couples games, romantic candlelit dinners etc.”

Having one space to live and work in can make anyone feel confined and claustrophobic, let alone when there’s more than one person doing it in the same place. Sometimes physical distance and boundaries are the best way to establish a sense of independence and focus, having different spaces for different daily routines and having different spaces for individuals can provide the compartmentalisation that’s needed when you’re isolating. With these house rules, personal boundaries and establishments in mind, are there any physical boundaries that you think should be set for couples in terms of working and living and isolating in one shared space?

“Yes, this is very important if physical boundaries are not respected this can lead to terrible arguments and significant upset. The following rules are imperative:

– Do not talk to me during working hours if I am working from home unless I engage with you or you just want to tell me something briefly.

– Do allow me to have private time to myself sometimes, despite us living under the same roof.

– Please respect your partner’s living rules to avoid arguments over chores and keeping the living space tidy.

– Respect that you are two different individuals but your different living styles have to integrate together successfully to avoid disagreements.”

People might be afraid to confront their partner with these ideas of distance and independence, what’s the best way to ask for some alone time without offending your partner? “Let your partner know you need some space and once you are finished you will join them.”

And how do you suggest we find some independence beyond the physical boundaries you’ve suggested? “Do not be too codependent on your partner; codependency ruins relationships. It is important that even though you are living together you do your own thing and embark on your own daily tasks and chores without constantly disturbing your partner.”

Even with these boundaries and independence, we understand when you’re stuck in the house with someone for a long time, arguments are almost inevitable. What do you think is the best way to diffuse an argument, or prevent one when tensions are high?“To avoid arguments listen to each other and show cognitive empathy towards your partner enabling you to see things from your partner’s perspective as well as your own. In the case of diffusing an argument concede if you are wrong, then apologise and do not raise your voice when speaking to your partner also always be aware of your tone.”

In isolation, every day can feel the same as we get into a routine that doesn’t change and can’t change, and with repetition comes boredom, which is sometimes the cause of these high tensions. How do you suggest couples can keep spontaneity and romance while stuck at home?

“Agree to quality time, no phones, no zoom, just the two of you. Try to create romantic fluidity by having intimacy and romance sporadically throughout the lockdown period. Understanding each other’s languages helps a lot in this situation knowing what your partner wants and needs is imperative. Play couples games i.e. a date night box, staycation setup or create an environment ideal for a romantic staycation. It is important to remember during lockdown give each other adequate space so that it doesn’t kill the romance.”

Games and staycations can be a brilliant way to spark romance and stop this period from feeling like an unrelenting Groundhog day, but on top of the boredom and impatience surrounding this pandemic, there is a lot of anxiety about the virus and families and these unprecedented times as a whole. One of M.D.D’s many counselling services regards mental health in the context of relationships, and the company is a key advocate for mental health, supporting and promoting Prince Harry’s Heads Together initiative. How should we comfort our partners if they’re feeling worried and how should we ask for comfort if we’re anxious in these times?

“Anxiety during this period is understandable. The unpredictability of this period is overwhelming, to say the least. It is important to communicate your feelings with your partner and be patient and supportive. Finances and jobs are a sensitive area at this time, create an environment that lets your partner feel comfortable at this time. Let your partner know your worries and fears and how this may be affecting your present behaviour. It is important to recognise your partner may be under strain at present which may result in some negative behaviour or possibly mood swings – do not take this personally.”

Although we are all facing a lot of uncertainty right now and all the elements of our lives have been changed by this pandemic, there is optimism and positivity to take away from it all. What message should couples keep in mind during this unprecedented period?

“The pandemic has been a strenuous period for us all but adversity is inevitable in life. There will be ups and downs and with patience, good communication, teamwork and resilience couples can get through this together. True love is shown by its unwavering strength through the tough times.”

As Nia says so well: “True love is shown by its unwavering strength through the tough times.”

This year is seeing major pop-stars making their comeback in music. Today it’s Miley Cyrus’ turn with her new explosive single ‘Midnight Sky’. Released – of course – at midnight, the song offers a first glimpse at the new sounds adopted by Miley for what seems to be the beginning of her new era.

In ‘Midnight Sky’, Miley sings about her intimacy and looks back at her past, expressing how much she’s changed and most importantly claiming her freedom. Her relationships, from her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth to her childhood friend Cody Simpson, have been the protagonists of numerous headlines as well as being endlessly discussed on social media. Miley addresses them as she sings, ‘But it’s been a long time since I felt this good on my own, Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes, Forever and ever, no more.’

Over a nostalgic ‘80s disco synth, Miley celebrates her freedom embracing her independence in love as she sings, ‘The midnight sky is the road I’m takin’, Head high up in the clouds, I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone, oh no, I don’t need to be loved by you.’ Her raw and deep vocals are accompanied by a pulsating and fast beat produced by Watt and Louis Bell. The singer later revealed that the inspiration behind the track were musical icons Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry and that for her next songs she will be leading into the 70s and 80s sounds. With an echoing set of vocals and a fading climax, the track ends just like it began as Miley repeats ‘Loved by you’.

This is also the first time that the singer gets to direct herself to the music video where, in an all retro-style location, Miley rocks a pixie mullet and dances under a technicolor light wearing a tight bodysuit adorned by Chanel accessories. Between multicolor animal statues, glitters, disco balls, and a mirror room, Miley shines and passionately sings her song in a purple glittery dress. In a scene reminiscent of her 2013 hit ‘Wrecking Ball’, she lies almost naked in a colourful ball pit covered only by bright jewellery.

In a later Zoom conversation, the singer discussed her next projects, revealing that she’s more interested in releasing singles for now. “I really have always enjoyed dropping singles, rather than the full body of work, because it allows you to talk to your fans in real-time,” she explains. “It’s like I feel something. I experience it. I write it. I release it. When you write a record, a lot of the time, you’re writing your experiences, and then by the time the record comes out, you’ve evolved past that experience.” Miley also confirmed the rumours of a possible collaboration with Dua Lipa. ‘We’ve been kinda collaborating for the last year, getting in and out and trying different records and seeing what shoe fits the best. I think we’re onto something now.’

‘Midnight Sky’ is the first sign of an evolution for Miley’s music which seems to be getting closer to the 80s style. The message that it holds is about being free and independent, something we can all relate to. The song and music video are now available on every streaming platform.

When one sense is lost, our brains get re-wired and put to work heightening our other senses. So, perhaps the absence of a boyfriend in my life is making me more receptive to the constant, relentless reminders of my relationship (or lack of) status. Or perhaps it’s the fact that we have finally surfaced after being smothered by Instagram feeds littered with pictures of smug-looking couples on their ‘cute lil Xmas weekend away XOX’; the constant and inescapable reminders of ‘boyfriend season’. Only to be thrust straight back into yet another one of the annual celebrations geared towards couples that us singletons are missing one key element to join in on yet are forced to endure.

It’s all getting a bit tedious, isn’t it? You literally can’t run to the shop for some milk for your morning cuppa’ without being smacked in the face with a ‘Dine in two for £10 this Valentines’ sign. You can’t even sit on your own in the comfort of your own home and innocently flick through TV channels without being bombarded with ‘Couples Come Dine With Me’, Married at first sight, First Dates, and now Love Island is back- GIVE ME STRENGTH!

Imagine a parallel universe. Each year, after the months of couples just about surviving ‘single season’, on February 14th all the sad people who are in relationships sit at home in front of the notebook and sob into their Doritos and tub of Ben and Jerry’s cookie dough, after sinking a £4 bottle of Echo Falls (far too specific to be made up, I know!). Whilst restaurants and bars are buzzing with single people ‘cheers’-ing to being with themselves for…their whole lives.

In light of this worryingly appealing parallel universe, and after years of being forced to live as a single person in an undeniably couple-orientated world, I’ve decided we need a revolution. This year it’s time we put the ‘I’ in Valentine’s day. Instead of commiserating over what we don’t have in our lives, put the financial benefits of being single to good use. Use the money you have saved by not having to buy the obligatory Christmas, birthday and Valentine’s day presents this year (and every other year) and treat yourself. Go and buy a boujee bottle of bubbly, a good book, run yourself a bath, turn your phone off and soak yourself in self-love (and really expensive bubble bath). Nothing screams ‘I love myself’ more than a 24-karat face mask; this Valentine’s day, celebrate what you have achieved in your life. By yourself, you can do whatever the hell you want, you are unstoppable; celebrate yourself.

Why is the word ‘single’ such a misunderstood word? Let me set the scene. You’re at a party and you find yourself stuck in the kitchen talking to a friend of a friend of a friend’s colleague. The two fail-safe questions that are a go-to in a situation like this inevitably pop up;

“So, what do you do?”

And

“Are you with anyone at the minute?”

Now, I don’t like to generalise but if your reply to the latter is ‘Yeah, I’ve been seeing this guy for nine months now”, I would bet my life savings (which probably wouldn’t even be enough buy a coat in Zara, don’t get excited) that their response to this would NOT be:

“Oh no, why what happened?”

Respond with “Nah, I’m single” on the other hand, and instantly poor little lonely you gets bombarded with:

“Aw dear, why?”

Or

“Don’t worry, you’ll find someone”

As if this unfortunate single circumstance couldn’t possibly be by choice, and you have been forced against your will by a cruel twist of fate to live a life of solitude and die alone. It doesn’t even cross their mind that there is a possibility that you might, just might be choosing to remain single.

You grit your teeth under that plastic smile you’re forcing your face into and say:

“Oh no, nothing has happened, I’m just not interested in being with anyone at the minute”

To which their reply is to stare at you blankly, so you justify your single-ness with:

“I’m just happy working on myself at the minute” (Whilst thinking to yourself, ‘lol, can you even work on perfection?!’)

As the fake justifications come pouring out, a memory trickles into your head of you prancing round your room in your undies to (in my humble opinion) one of the pussycat Doll’s greatest works of art; I don’t need a man. Trying to mimic the hip movements Ms Scherzinger does in the music video with the same vigour, but less sex appeal. Whilst belting out at the top of your lungs,

“I don’t need a man to make it happen I get off being free I don’t need a man to make me feel good I get off doing my thing I don’t need a ring around my finger To make me feel complete So, let me break it down I can get off when you ain’t around, OHHHHH”

This friend of a friend of a friend’s colleague has clearly never felt empowerment like this; so, you can only pity them and their ignorance.

Recently, however, this type of subtle single shaming is happening less and less. A change in the wind has made the S word that people were branded with should they choose not to spend their life partnered with someone as less of a temporary state of failure and more of a label to wear with pride.

We’ve got Lizzo putting ‘the s-i-i-ing in single’ while she ‘aint worried bout a ri-i-ing- on her finger and Emma Watson inventing the term ‘Self-partnered’ for people who are single and happy to be so, making being single the new in thing. So now, us people who have been loving ourselves, shaking our junk and singing to I don’t need a man and meaning it since 2006, can call ourselves the pioneers of this ‘single pride’ movement.

What being single does mean is that you can do what you want, when you want. You get to dictate every single aspect of your life, which is something that changes as you naturally want to please your partner. It’s not a bad thing, it just happens. Gradually, people are starting to realise that being single isn’t this dark pit of boring loneliness that people can’t wait to get out of. You haven’t failed in life if you haven’t made someone fall madly in love with you by the time your 25. Your life still has meaning if you haven’t moved in with someone and aren’t thinking about kids by the time you’re thirty.

Remember; who’s the one person in this world who knows you inside out and who has only your best intentions at heart. YOU.

Being happily single is the new trend, follow it.

Let’s face it, it’s getting more and more difficult to meet the person of your dreams in real life when every day, it’s work, work, work and repeat. You barely get time to eat and sleep, let alone date!

Dating apps like Tinder have really changed the dating game, with doctors, lawyers and fashionistas only a swipe away.

We caught up with Emily Hartridge, presenter and internet sensation based in London, to give some relationship advice on finding ‘the one’ on this the most romantic of days.

Voir: What advice do you have for an online dating newbie?

Emily: I would say don’t lie, it’s a bit like social media isn’t it? It’s a platform to showcase you, what you look like, what you do, what you like doing in your spare time. But there’s always those who put the most amazing pictures on there and tell these amazing things about themselves and if it’s not true, you’re already setting yourself up for a fall. Like when someone says they’re 6ft1 when really they’re not, they’re like 5ft10. Just make sure you represent who you actually are and if they don’t like you then they can piss off, you know.

V: Do men actually read an online profile or are they just looking at the photos?

E: If you’re the kind of guy that’s actually looking for a relationship, you’re gonna read what someone’s written on their profile. I’m sure they would read a small bio and photos if they’re actually looking for a relationship. And if they’re not looking for a relationship, then obviously it’s gonna be all physical, so do you want to be with someone like that anyway?

V: How do we distinguish between a profile which is real and fake? What are signs we’ve stumbled on a fake online dating profile?

E: I’ve definitely come across a few phonies on dating apps. Most of the time they come in the form of only putting modelling shots on their profile, which are obviously a google images of “hot male model”. Then what happens most of the time is I would be like “Ah, sort of swipe right” and then we’ll match and then there basically isn’t really a conversation because they either go straight in and say “Do you wanna have sex?” or they just don’t reply. If he just puts a lot of model photos on there that’s a bit of a sign that they’re probably not real.

V: What messaging tips do you have to avoid a boring conversation on a dating app?

E: Messaging is the most important part of the whole thing because I hate small talk. Like “hey how are you? How’s your day going?” I HATE that kind of chat. I’d much rather start with something interesting or a question, like what their death row meal would be. I know mine and I think it’s actually interesting when people answer that question. Honestly if a guy messaged me saying “hey how’s your day going?” I would be like “No, no.” So just mix it up.

V: What are your first date tips for women?

E: On the first date I would go for a coffee maybe in the day or just a drink, then sometimes that can lead to dinner. Don’t allocate yourself loads of hours because you might not like them. I’ve done that before, gone to dinner and it was just a terrible mistake because I hated it from the moment I walked in to the bar.

V: What do you think of singles playing “the game” if they’re looking for a serious relationship?

E: I’m pretty open and honest, I don’t think I know how to play a game. But when it comes to messaging and replying, you naturally want to reply really quickly but most people don’t really have that mentality. They would probably wait it out for a bit, so sometimes they wait a few hours to reply. It depends on age too, If getting close to 30 most people are done with games. You’re at the point where you probably want to meet someone and think about children or what you want to do with your life with them. There are definitely less games played over 30 because I don’t have time. Just be honest and be open what your looking for and if they’re not it then that’s fine.

V: What questions should we ask our online match before we meet them in real life?

E: I think pre-chats are a bit dangerous on dating apps because it can lead to a lot of disappointment which lasts a long time. It’s happened to so many of my friends that chats with guys for weeks and you almost feel like you have a boyfriend and then you meet them and then you’re like “Oh I don’t fancy you” and you wasted all those weeks. So I wouldn’t say there’s any necessary specific questions you need to ask. It’s good to have a little bit of chat, you know, “what do you do? Where do you live? What kind of stuff do you like to do?” But most of the time I’ve had a lot of friends that are just like “Hey how’s it going bla bla bla” and then “shall we just go for a drink?” You can ask them all the questions you want when you see them.

Delving into your past isn’t always a good thing when it comes exes, but this ‘ex’ cover is definitely one to cause a stir. Talking to the Voir creative director, Luke Walwyn we found out more about the spectacular issue 17 cover.

Luke: For the shoot we wanted to create a story of the emotional stages of a breakup as a backdrop to the fashion. Chloe Jasmine was ideal for this role as we required a large element of method acting. She had to bring believable emotions to this shoot so that the reader could identify with each stage and create a truly captivating and believable performance for the cover of Voir. Chloe Jasmine really conveyed the emotions in such a raw way that it was totally believable. We were almost living and breathing every emotion she was feeling.

Here is each stage of a breakup as told by Studio Voir and the meticulous, Miss Jasmine.

1. The Breakup –

Chloe was feeling raw emotions and was therefore able to convey those feeling to the camera.

2. Shock –

Clever makeup and a convincing gaze captured this mood.

3. Anguish –

The polaroids and the empty bottle really emphasise the feeling of anguish along with Chloe’s body language.

4. Anger –

This was a frightening performance from Chloe who managed to nail the emotion of anger and a woman consumed with rage.

5. Revenge –

With the help of Noah Sparnon, Chloe was able to play a beguiling role armed with a wry smile

6. Rebound –

A gaze of indifference nailed the rebound scene which became a masterstroke of emotions.

7. Over-indulgence –

Chloe confidently introduces an element of playfulness to a spending spree of comfort.

8. Freedom to be me –

It was Chloe who played with the dynamics of the location and on the giant window sills to introduce the element of ‘freedom’ from the constraints of a suffocating relationship.

9. Totally Over It –

Laughter and playfulness again captured the essence of the emotion of being over a breakup.

10. Here’s to the Future –

Chloe had so much fun with props and accessories to introduce the message of looking forward to a new life.
