“Dropping ‘Heat’ on the same day as World Pride feels iconic,” Rita shares. “It’s a celebration of joy, freedom, and being unapologetically YOU. I just wanted to have fun with this track — it’s totally soaked in sunshine.”

The track first made waves during her Miami performance on Kylie Minogue’s Tension Tour, and now it’s gearing up to dominate summer playlists. Next stop? London’s Summertime Ball on 15th June, where Rita is set to bring the heat (literally).

And the video? A full-on visual escape. Directed by Justin Daashuur Hopkins and shot in rich technicolor hues on Miami Beach, the “Heat” video is a surreal, high-energy celebration of beach culture — eccentric, sweaty, wild, and unapologetically alive. Think Martin Parr meets sun-drenched fantasy.

Caroline Polachek – ‘Pretty Impossible’

The current it girl of alt-pop Caroline Polachek brought us the soundtrack to the latter half of February with her album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. Fusing electronica with garage and a touch of house, she’s created a downtempo masterpiece that is an early candidate for album of the year. ‘Pretty Impossible’ is the song Caroline said she was most proud of in an interview with Crack magazine. Inspired by the string section on Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, it’s a dreamy trip-hop track full of lush violins and scatty beats. And that spoken word section is to die for.

Paramore – ‘Running Out of Time’

Paramore made their much-welcomed comeback after a 5-year hiatus this February with This Is Why. Anxious and introspective, the album deals with a myriad of global issues such as war and the pandemic and explodes with nervous energy providing a cathartic experience for the listener. ‘Running Out of Time’ is one of the best tracks from the album. Singer Hayley Williams wittily jests at her poor time management in this light-hearted melodic track that proves that the post-punk revival isn’t dead. Feel the tension slip away as you dance to those stabbing guitar riffs.

Janelle Monáe – ‘Float’

You’ll ‘Float’ to Janelle Monáe’s triumphant new track that’s “light as a feather”. The single is the first new release from the singer from 2021 and features Fela Kuti’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, as well as his band, Egypt 80. Janelle showcases her rapping skills on dub influenced track featuring a rich brass section and groovy guitar riffs. We’re hoping that this chill uplifting song could be pointing to a new era for the R&B singer and that more new music might follow!

Lizzo & SZA – ‘Special’

The dream team-up of course is in our playlist. This month Lizzo and SZA dropped a remix of  ‘Special’ featuring SZA providing stunning backing vocals to the fantastic tune. Motivating, uplifting, and comforting – it’s the ideal song for turning a rainy day to sunny.

PinkPantheress & Ice Spice – ‘Boy’s a Liar pt. 2’

PinkPantheress’ TikTok hit ‘Boy’s a Liar’ got a revamp this month when the singer collabed with our favourite new rapper Ice Spice this month. The suitably titled ‘Boy’s a Liar pt. 2’ brings us everything we loved about the original plus an outrageously catchy verse from the orange-haired baddie. We dare you not to sing along.

Lana Del Rey – ‘A&W’

‘A&W’ is the most exciting piece of work Lana has released in some time. The seven-minute-long song, which was released on Valentine’s Day in the Americana queen’s typical romantic style, is broken into two parts and manages to refer to personas Lana embodied throughout her impressively varied career. It starts with a piano-driven melancholic melody before plunging the listener into an electronic R&B beat with distorted vocals reminiscent of tracks from Ultraviolence. We can’t wait for when Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd hits streaming next month.

Jessie Ware – ‘Pearls’

The ever-classy Jessie Ware gave us a taste of hazy luxury this month with her latest single ‘Pearls’. Bringing us a funky nu-disco moment, ‘Pearls’ is full of the singer’s usual uplifting energy packed with lively keys, great backing vocals, and whispery addressals.If ‘Pearls’ is anything to go by we know we’ll love Jessie’s fifth album That! Feels Good! dropping on the 28^th April.

Kelela – ‘Enough for Love’

Warm and full of longing, the R&B track ‘Enough for Love’ is the fifth and final single from Kelela’s album Raven, which dropped earlier this month. Kelela’s second LP is another early contender for album of the year. The angelic-voiced singer expertly shapes a hypnotic nocturnal soundscape that’s desire-filled, mediative, and utterly rich – its sound and energy is unmatched. 

Maisie Peters – ‘Body Better’

Maisie Peters voices her anxiety over body issues in ‘Body Better’ which every woman can, unfortunately, relate to. Although the lyrics touch on a sensitive spot for many the track is a refreshing sway-inducing pop tune. Featuring frills, cake, and um… blood, the music video for the track sees pop’s newest sweet-faced princess getting her hands dirty whilst on a picnic with her friends. It’s sugar-sweet with a dark twist and we’re here for it.

Princess Nokia – ‘Closure’

Princess Nokia gets angsty on their newest single ‘Closure’ switching their signature pop rap style for noisy alt-electronica. With boisterous drums and raw riffs, Nokia channels her sadness and anger over a failed relationship into a catchy breakup anthem that will heal the heartbroken. 

Yunè Pinku – ‘Night Light’

A twilight set electronic maze of twinkling sounds, Yunè Pinku’s progressive house track ‘Night Light’ sparkles as an endlessly replayable unique dance track. The London-based artist never fails to produce interesting, dreamy tunes that have us dancing the night away in a trance.

Nia Archives – ‘Conveniency’

Jungle heads will love Nia Archives’ liquid D’n’B and neo-soul fusion. As expected from the fun-loving DJ, singer, songwriter, and producer ‘Conveniency’ brings all the good vibes for pre or post-club antics. With scatty beats and gorgeous layered harmonies, it’s a sunny track that will put a smile on your face. The track is a single from Nia’s forthcoming EP Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall set to come out next month – keep an eye out for more playlist-worthy tunes.

Yaya Bey – ‘Exodus the North Star’

Vulnerable neo-soul will always have a place in our hearts and playlists. Brooklynite Yaya Bey’s ‘Exodus the North Star’ fuses neo-soul and reggae to create something special that we can’t stop playing. Yaya’s unique vocals pack a punch starting soft and then crescendoing into a powerful performance as she begs her lover to take her to paradise. It’s an ultra-romantic track that we’re goo-goo for.

We settled on ‘Call Out My Name’ the stripped-back R&B ballad with a booming bassline that you’ll want to serenade your lover with. The lyric ‘call out my name when I kiss you so gently’ is sure to have them swooning.

Al Green – ‘Let’s Stay Together’

The smoothest love song around. Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’ is essential in any Valentine’s playlist. Play this heartfelt slow number this year and promise your partner you’ll love them “whether times are good or bad, happy or sad”.

Sade – ‘By Your Side’

This lush laid-back number from Sade will set the mood for a romantic evening whatever your plans are this Valentine’s Day. In the lyrics to ‘By Your Side’ Sade promises to always comfort her lover and lift them up. How much more romantic can you get?

Beyoncé – ‘Love On Top’

Beyoncé’s ‘Love on Top’ will have you feeling like Juliet as you bop along to this throwback with your Romeo. With four key changes and that beautiful whistle tone, the singer demonstrates why she’s number one on this track. Just like Beyoncé sings we hope you’ll be smiling ear to ear with this jubilant showstopper.

Frank Ocean – ‘Thinkin Bout You’

The certified platinum song ‘Thinkin Bout You’ is the perfect way to hint to your crush your feelings for them. The lyrics in the smooth modern R&B classic intimately express the longing that Ocean feels towards his crush and how he wonders if they feel the same way back. The silky production and Ocean’s gorgeous falsetto will have you feeling some type of way.

Steve Lacy – ‘Bad Habit’

‘Bad Habit’ took the world by storm last year with the song trending on TikTok and peaking at number one on the Billboard top 100. The yearning Lacy expresses in the lyrics paired with the dreamy backing vocals and sweet guitar riffs makes this song totally romantic. You and your crush will be harmonising to it together in no time.

Lana Del Rey – ‘Video Games’

‘Video Games’ is an early number from Lana’s catalogue but it’s still romantic as ever detailing Lana’s devotion to her lover. The singer is at the height of her glamourous Americana tragedy in this sweet song you can sway with your partner to. Lana’s crooning “it’s you, it’s you, it’s all for you/everything I do” is bound to get you feeling soppy.

Rihanna – ‘Love On the Brain’

Rihanna’s doo-wop and soul-inspired ballad ‘Love on the Brain’ has us all making gooey eyes. Rihanna channels a mix between Amy Winehouse and Etta James to bring us a romance song for the ages. It’s another necessity for a magical Valentine’s evening.

Prince – Purple Rain

The late great Prince knew the secrets to the heart. Though it’s sort of a breakup song it still conveys deep love and soul that means it would be a shame to discount it. This timeless classic is full of emotion and perfect for slow dancing with your lover around the living room.

Doja Cat – Celebrity Skin

We were super excited to hear Doja’s rendition of Hole’s ‘Celebrity Skin’, which once again proves why she is one of the most exciting and versatile artists making music right now. The rendition came about for a collaborative commercial with Taco Bell, which aired during the Super Bowl. Hole’s frontwoman Courtney Love took to Instagram to praise Doja’s take on the band’s 90s hit, with the caption “I’m really enjoying this”.

Bree Runway – Pressure

Dropping her first release of the year on February 7th, Bree has got us excited for the music we’ll be hearing from her in 2022! Pressure is a track that exudes confidence, bursting with an infectious afrobeat and tongue n cheek lyrics – our favourite being “Anywhere I walk is a runway” – this is the energy we need! Bree also served a sassy music video with killer looks and empowering choreography. 

Speaking on the track, Bree said; 

“I love how this song embodies everything I am. It oozes Africa with the rhythm of the drums, the attitude, the assurance and the fashion. I made this song with nights out in mind. You know when you look so good before you head out, and you hope that you bump into an ex or a hater? Yeah, that’s the mood.”

Megan Thee Stallion – Flamin’ Hottie

If anyone was to release a song inspired by flamin’ hot Cheetos, it had to be hot girl Megan Thee Stallion. Releasing ‘Flamin’ Hottie’ on February 4th, the track was made as a promotional tool for spicy crips, such as Flamin hot Doritos and Cheetos, with multiple lines of the song referring to the hot snacks. The track sees Megan sample Salt N Pepa’s classic rap song ‘Push It’, and we are living for this crossover! 

Nicki Minaj 

The queen is back! Dropping two tracks in seven days, Nicki is spoiling the Barbz whilst establishing an exciting new era. ‘Do We Have A Problem?’ was the first of the two tracks, seeing Nicki team up with Lil Baby for a dynamic and straightforward lyrical approach. The video is a masterpiece in itself, seeing Nicki star as a double-crossing agent with an agenda.

The second track titled ‘Bussin’ also features Lil Baby and sees Nicki bring back her much-loved flow from the track ‘FEFE’. With two super fun and assertive rap tracks under her belt so early on in 2022, we have a feeling this new era for Nicki is going to be special. 

Tommy Genesis ft BIA – a woman is a god

Originally released back in July 2022, ‘a woman is a god’ encapsulates the fierce persona of Tommy Genesis. Now, adding BIA to the track, the pair unite over their shared love for women empowerment. An exciting music video directed by Tommy is expected within the coming weeks, we can’t wait!

ROSALÍA – SAOKO

Getting us hyped for her upcoming album, ‘Motomami’, released on March 18th, Rosalia brought us the infectious sassy reggaeton track ‘Saoko’ earlier this month. Featuring rich bass’, catchy rhythms and a badass video, we are obsessed with this track! The video sees Rosalia join forces with a powerful biker girl gang, giving us all the rebellious energy we could wish for. 

Arlo Parks – Softly

No one does smooth, sweet vocals the way Arlo Parks does, and her latest single ‘Softly’ is no exception. The track sees Parks pair an upbeat arrangement with delicate sad lyrics to create a unique juxtaposing sound that draws you in. 

Speaking on ‘Softly’ Parks said;

“‘Softly’ is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love. The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.”

Saweetie, H.E.R. – Closer

Bringing us a slightly different side to her musical repertoire, Saweetie is embracing pop music with her new track ‘Closer’ featuring H.E.R.. Reminiscent of the groove and positive vibes of Doja Cat’s ‘Say So’, ‘Closer’ has us dreaming of summer evenings. This rich, easy-going sound suits Saweetie and is further brought to life with H.E.R.’s angelic vocals heard in the song’s hook. The music video sees the pair become pilots, flying ‘ICY airlines’ around the world with Saweetie going on a string of dates. 

Becky G, KAROL G – MAMIII

In a euphoric celebration of sisterhood, Becky G and KAROL G stick up their middle finger to toxic relationships in their collaboration ‘MAMIII’. With an infectious reggaeton beat as the driving force behind the track, smooth Latin American melodies set the tone for this girl anthem. The music video celebrates culture, with dancing, body art and makeup taking centre stage. 

Kim Petras – Treat Me Like A Slut

Kim Petras’ latest EP ‘Slut Pop’ consists of 15 minutes of sex empowerment anthems, leaving fans once again impressed with her openness. The track ‘Treat Me Like A Slut’ is fixated on the topic of those who have a degradation kink, and features a visualiser of Petras looking seductive as ever.

 Amaarae – SAD GIRLS LUV MONEY ft Kalis Uchis and Moliy

Now, although this track was released at the tail end of 2021, the music video officially came out last week, and we had to include it in our girl power rundown. Featuring intergalactic looks, lingerie embellished with crystals and women being totally in control, we love this video!

Rosalia ft. The Weeknd- LA FAMA

“Get ready for some heat- La Fama!” is announced at the beginning of La Fama’s music video, however, we think ‘heat’ may be an understatement. La Fama sees The Weeknd and Rosalia sing a story of romancing with fame, exploring how this lifestyle is often glorified. In the music video, Rosalia wears a gorgeous embellished dress whilst performing on stage as the human embodiment of fame. A crowd of adoring listeners watch her, with The Weeknd situated at the best seat in the house for her performance. He soon becomes infatuated with Rosalia, subsequently entering a heated duet which ends with The Weeknd regretting his lust for fame. 

Christina Aguilera, Becky G, Nicki Nicole ft. Nathy Peluso – Pa Mis Muchachas

This release came as a bit of a surprise last month, as we heard Christina Aguilera fuse her iconic powerhouse vocals with the Spanish language for the first time in 21 years. Christina enlisted the help of Becky G, Nicki Nicola and Nathy Pelusa to aid in getting the song’s message of honouring powerful Latin women across, with Christina saying she chose her collaborators due to “the strength they exude”.  The slickly produced music video features Christina in all leather, whilst sporting her new fiery red hair alongside her collaborators looking just as rebellious as they dominate the dancefloor. 

Little Mix – No

Celebrating milestones has never looked (or sounded) as good as Little Mix, having marked their 10 year anniversary with the release of their greatest hits album ‘Between Us’ last week. The album included 4 brand new tracks, including the single ‘No’. The track details Little Mix’s strength, and how they have a new found power in being able to say ‘no’ to things they don’t want to do. The music video keeps their mantra of female empowerment at its heart, with the girls resembling glamorous mothers as they reset the men in their lives to help with day-to-day tasks that are usually seen as a mother’s responsibility. Talk about iconic.

Ms Banks- Party ft. Naira Marley

If you’re looking for a song to put you in the mood to dance, look no further because ‘Party’ will definitely get you out of your seat. This track sees Ms Banks bring a softer style, giving her hard-hitting bars a break. She sings melodies that compliment the song’s Afro-beat style percussion perfectly, resulting in a vibrant Afro-pop song. ‘Party’ saw Banks team up with Naira Marley, and he delivered his signature style of melodic rap with tongue-in-cheek lyrics to add an extra flavour to this fun track. The music video takes us to the streets of Nigeria, with Banks looking glammed up as she dances through the street market. The highlight of the video is Banks and Naira’s undeniable charisma and chemistry as they vibe together in the street.

Avril Lavigne- Bite Me

The Pop-Rock princess is back! Avril Lavigne made her solo comeback last week with the electrifying ‘Bite Me’. The song details a breakup and falling fast for the wrong person, matched with all the angst we would expect from a classic Avril song, brought to life by the dynamic drumming of Travis Barker. The music video feels nostalgic in all the right ways, with close-ups of Avril and her band playing ( this was a style of music video that was a huge part of 2000s pop-punk). To bring an extra taste of Y2K to her video, Avril rocks her iconic tartan skirt, knee-high black boots, a slogan t-shirt, black eyeshadow and dyed pink hair tips… We are living for this pop-rock rejuvenation! 

Anitta – Envolver

We couldn’t resist adding this saucy song to our list, as Anitta delivers another Latin Pop gem. ‘Envolver’ tells a tale of female desires, with an empowering sentiment that women should be unapologetic of their sexual needs and natures. Video wise, Anitta continues with this seductive message, as she lives out her dreams whilst performing a sensual dance with the man she is fixated on. This dream snaps back and forth from her reality of being alone, as she dances solo in a studio. 

Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic – Smokin Out The Window

Putting groove back in our hearts and the charts are the sensational duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak under their name of ‘Silk Sonic’. ‘Smokin’ Out The Window’ sees the pair sing tongue-in-cheek lyrics based on how they have gone above and beyond for their partners, only for her to be with somebody else. These cheeky lyrics are matched with a funk style, reminiscent of 70s R&B ballads. The music video is very retro, taking us back five decades, as the duo wear matching brown suits and yellow-tinged sunglasses, with accompanying dancers rocking the same fashion. The whole production of the song and video is done to a standard that feels world-class and could pass as a classic 70s song.
