All eyes were on Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, now a familiar pairing on the awards circuit. Opening the ceremony, Regina King graced the carpet with a wow-factor Louis Vuitton gown. Embellished with intricate bejewelled details, vertically arranging along her dress, this powder blue moment is one to remember. Oozing with confidence, Halle Berry’s bold magenta gown was an eye-catching phenomenon. Her posing and confidence enhanced this dress to another level. The flowing fabric of the custom LaQuan Smith gown had depth with dramatic bow detailing, fit for a night like the Oscars, she was truly the Queen of the carpet.

Carey Mulligan: As Gold as an Oscar

Carey Mulligan’s Oscar look somehow pulled off the crop top and skirt combination. Defying the casual connotation with a two-piece set, Mulligan’s floor length Valentino gown ensured she looked like royalty at the ceremony. The gold two-piece set added a fun and modern spin to the traditional ball-like silhouette. The Best Actress nominee shined brightly with her rich and luxurious fabric, emulating an Oscar itself.

Andra Day: Vivacious in Vera

Andra day took the carpet by storm in a Gold Vera Wang gown, accessorised with dainty Tiffany & Co. Jewels. This metallic and slinky dress shows off Andra’s figure with a high leg slit and cut out detail.

Margot Robbie: Banging Outfit

Margot Robbie attended the 2021 Oscars debuting her blunt bangs, wearing a full-length floral Chanel gown; she kept her look simple and sweet. Embracing the paired back, minimalist aesthetic, Robbie looked as elegant and classic as ever.

Amanda Seyfried: Red on Red

Lakeith Stanfield: One Piece Wonder

Best Supporting Actor nominee, made an immense impression at the Oscar’s with his unique and quirky choice of a Saint Laurent jumpsuit. Sporting major seventies vibes, his cool and effortless open collar paired with a subtle chain beneath ensured the Judas and the Black Messiah actor stole the show with this chic ensemble. Stanfield is definitely up there with one of the best looks of the night.

The most awaited event of Awards season is here, and with comes the possibility to celebrate some of the best talents in the film and entertainment industry. We are, of course, talking about the Oscars. The 93rd annual Academy Awards will be held this Sunday, April 25, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The glamorous event will be held in person which means that we will get to celebrate not only our favourite actors but their iconic looks too.

The red carpet is an essential part of the Oscars, for some, it may be just the beforehand of an incredible ceremony… but for us, here at Voir, it is an event in itself. It is the moment where we get to see our favourite celebrities and their fashion choices, innovative (or not) styles and flashing makeups. It is one of the moments every fashion aficionado looks forwards to throughout the year, after the met-gala of course.

Let’s be honest, not everyone can remember that the Godfather by Albert S. Ruddy won Best Picture at the 45th Academy Awards of 1973, but we can assure you that everyone remembers Cher’s appearance wearing a gold, jewel-encrusted Bob Mackie look. And that’s thanks to the power of the red carpet, and Cher of course.

We’ve already talked plenty about the dazzling list of nominee’s for this year’s ceremony, and we will probably continue to do so in the following days. But today we’re here to talk about the iconic looks that make the Oscars red carpet a landmark in the world of fashion.

The Oscars have consistently been a major source of entertainment to audiences everywhere, from the outrageous outfits to the record-breaking winners to the mishaps and the attendee’s reactions, there’s always a buzz about the Oscars.

In a year when we’ve all watched a fair share of movies thanks to a heap of indoor quality time with our televisions and tablets, there’s quite a bit of excitement for the awards season. To celebrate, VOIR takes a look at the exciting 2021 nominations and some of the most iconic Oscar’s moments over the years. 

Since 1927, the Oscars have continually provided us with both reasons for excitement and outrage. With some iconic moments over the years alongside some huge oversights, the Oscars has never failed to get people talking. One of those memorable moments occurred in 1969 when the first-ever split-win occurred. After both receiving 3,030 votes, huge icons Katharine Hepburn and Barbara Streisand both picked up the Oscar for best actress for their roles in Funny Girl and The Lion in The Winter.

Only Streisand was in attendance that night, and so collected the Oscar alone in an equally memorable sheer black flared embellished suit by Arnold Scaasi. 

Another iconic yet frankly long-overdue moment occurred in 2002 when Halle Berry became the first Black woman to win an award for Best Actress. Berry picked up the award for her role in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. Her speech was incredibly moving, and her well-deserved win was celebrated by audiences internationally.

This year’s Oscar nominees have finally been revealed and despite the Oscar’s aforementioned long-running issues with diversity and inclusivity, after 93 years it appears as though things may have finally begun to progressively change. 

The 2021 Oscar nominations have for the first time, included more than one woman in the running for best director. Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell are the women making history in this category for their films Nomadland and Promising Young Woman.

This is clearly a step in a more promising direction considering that the nominations for this category have only ever in 93 years included five women, whilst Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) remains the only woman to have ever actually picked up the award for best director.

Zhao’s film Nomadland which is centred around a woman in her sixties traveling around American West is also a contender for best picture. Fennell’s Promising Young Woman is also in the running for best original screenplay, best film, and best actress (Carey Mulligan).  

Viola Davis, the best-supporting actress winner for her role in Fences in 2017 has this year been nominated for best actress for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Viola Davis’ incredible talent has many fans incredibly excited to potentially see her pick up an award that recognises her stellar contribution to the industry. 

Davis’ co-star, the late Chadwick Boseman has received a posthumous best actor nomination also for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Chadwick Boseman, who passed away aged 43 last August had shockingly never been nominated for an Academy Award before despite his roles in ‘Black Panther’, ‘42’ and ‘Get on Up’. His role as a spirited trumpeter has finally earned Boseman the recognition he deserves and this nomination has warmed the hearts of many fans who are still mourning the loss of a great talent. 

There’s plenty to be excited about after hearing this year’s nominations, but something else we’re looking forward to is the iconic outfits that the Oscars normally provide us with. 

Over the years, we’ve seen iconic fashion moments on the red carpet, like Cher in her incredible showgirl-themed outfit in ‘86. After being snubbed for her role in Mask, Cher explained to Vogue that her outfit had been an answer to her belief that the academy didn’t take her seriously. The Bob Mackie-designed midriff-baring dramatic black sequinned look was certainly the focus of the red carpet that year, and still remains one of the most iconic Oscar outfits of all time.

In 2014, Lupita Nyong’o blessed the red carpet with her plunging princess Prada dress in a stunning blue. The gown was the perfect fit for Nyong’o and did justice to her incredible talents. It’s another red-carpet moment that lives rent-free in our heads. 

Whilst we’re eagerly awaiting to see which of this year’s Oscar outfits will make us swoon, this year more than ever, we’re excited to hopefully see these more inclusive Oscar nominations translate into something that only grows and improves over time. Though it may have taken some 90 something years, the Oscars are finally starting to more accurately represent the actual range of talent that the world has to offer, and it makes things far more exciting to watch.

Though we’re yet to find out how this year’s Oscars will operate in terms of live and virtual forms of streaming, the confirmed date of which the winners will be announced is (the later date of) April 25th. The ceremony will air at 1 AM in UK time. 

The excitement for this years Oscars is ramping up and rightly so, because the outpour of talent recognition, hilarious celebrity reactions and iconic outfit inspiration is never short during awards season.

2010: Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture

Launching our countdown is this timeless look; a playful, flowy organza princess dress, adorned with a delightful watercolour print and minimal accessories. Lorraine Schwartz diamond chandelier earrings, neutral makeup and high ‘do prove as great styling choices, and all I have to say is that your hair looks sexy pushed back babe.

2011: Michelle Williams in Chanel

the Best Actress nominee was mesmerising in this modern yet romantic piece. The combination of the dress’ pearly hue, Williams’ platinum blonde pixie cut and the minimalistic makeup make her the human embodiment of an angle, and we stan.

2012: Angelina Jolie Atelier Versace

Arguably the best look on the red carpet that night, and undeniably the most iconic; the “Angelina Leg” moment echoed so loud through editorial time and space, it is still referenced hard to this day. For the cultural impact alone, Angie won that year’s carpet.

2013: Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture

This dress was so stunningly beautiful, it didn’t even matter it was also responsible for Jennifer Lawrence tripping over it on as she made her way to accept her award for Best Actress. The unique drop-waist silhouette and the strand of 150 Chopard diamond beads necklace draping backwards make for a showstopping fashion moment.

2014: Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé

In a design I can only imagine had been inspired by an actual siren, the Blue Jasmine star looked absolutely mesmerising, like a couture clad version of The Birth of Venus. We love, love, love this look, and don’t believe anyone else could have carried it as elegantly as miss Blanchett.

2015: Emma Stone in Elie Saab

Intricate, vintage-inspired beadwork over close-fitting, high slit dress? Yes, please. This work of art not only is spectacular on its own merit but the colour complimented Stone’s skin tone and hair colour so beautifully it’s like a match made in couture heaven.

2016: Naomi Watts in Armani

Even when she’s not nominated, Watts looks like an absolute winner. This extraordinary deep navy and aubergine gradient dress, embellished with iridescent sequins had an ethereal effect which beat every other look in that night.

2017: Janelle Monáe in Elie Saab

Once again, the princess dress received an interesting modern interpretation. Seemingly stepping out as a villain in a new Disney live-action production, Monáe looked like the dark princess of our dreams. The metallic embroidery adorning the sheer black bodice and the

golden Forevermark choker create a seamless majestic look befitting the musician’s enchanting presence.

2018: Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein by Appointment

In an ultimate combination between girlish and feminine elegance, this sweet, oversised bow emblazoned powder pink dress complimented Ronan’s pale complexion as well as her status as a young 20-something three times Oscars nominee.

2019: Billy Porter in custom Christian Siriano

Sorry to everyone else, but there really was no question as to who won last year’s red carpet. Gender fluidity? Check. Infinite charisma and poise? Check. A truly mind-blowing, elegant and glamorous look? Check, check, check. The tuxedress™ to launch a thousand obscure outfits marked the end of yawn-inducing menswear, and for that alone deserves recognition.

2020: Zazie Beetz in Thom Browne

The only black dress to make this list, I simply love this piece and the excellent styling of this look. The sequins complement the structured shape of the corset and are beautifully juxtaposed to Beetz’s awe-striking natural hair texture. The subtle green hue reflected in the jewellery marks our jealousy from how flawless this lady looked last night.
