Andrea “Dre” Greene, a young lady from Houston, would do anything for her favourite R&B singer Ni’Jah: max out credit cards, shun her sister’s boyfriend, and even murder the star’s haters. Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) stars as the psychotic Dre in the seven-part satirical psychological thriller that debuted earlier this month on Amazon Prime.

Writers and creators Donald Glover and Janine Nabers wanted to make it blatantly obvious that pop star Ni’Jah is a parallel to Beyoncé. Of course, Ni’Jah’s fanbase’s nickname is the Swarm very similar to Beyoncé stan’s nickname the Beyhive, Dre accidentally bites Ni’Jah just like the rumoured incident with a fan biting Bey, Ni’Jah’s releases “Festival” about her unfaithful husband much like Beyoncé’s Lemonade, and there’s even a Solange doppelganger in the show. The series even begins with the slightly on-the-nose message: “This is not a work of fiction. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is intentional”.

Though the events are inspired by details and incidents throughout Beyoncé’s career, the examination of fandom culture is of course applicable beyond her fans. “Beyhive don’t kill us, it’s not that bad, it’s actually pretty cool!”, Childish Gamino joked at the premiere of the show.

Glover called Swarm a “post-truth TV show” in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. The Atlanta writer and Janine Nabers assess the dangers of parasocial relationships showing how online fandoms can spring into witch hunt attacks, dox those that diss the star they stan, invade celebrities’ privacy, and even go as far as violence through using Dre as depiction of an extreme case.

Talking to Vulture, Glover said he wanted Dre to be “brutal” and told Fishback to watch Isabella Huppert in the Piano Teacher for inspiration for her performance. However, some of the writer’s comments on how he prepared the actress for the role have rubbed people the wrong way. Glover told Vulture he instructed the actress to: “Think of it more like an animal and less like a person”.

Despite the lack of help she received in interpreting her character’s deeper motives, Dominique Fishback delivers a spine-chilling performance as Dre as she continues further into psychosis as the years pass. The brief connection we get to see between Chloe Bailey (Black-ish) who plays Dre’s sister Marissa and Dre gives us more insight into the softer side of the character but unlucky for us their screen time together is short lived. Packed with gore, tension, as well as dark humour, Swarm is a thriller that keeps its audience engaged with its hooking plot and dramatic performances. 

The show seems to find its groove more as we get further down the rabbit hole. Just as Dre struggles to distinguish between reality and fiction so does the viewer as episode six plunges us into a true crime documentary following a police detective trying to solve Dre’s murders. In a particularly meta, twist Donald Glover himself even gives a red-carpet interview about him making a TV show based on Dre’s life therefore suggesting Dre exists in our world. It’s a mind melt moment nearly as genius as the second half of  the American Horror Story series Roanoke.

A little ironically Twitter and TikTok have been hyped over popstar Billie Eillish’s acting debut as the extremely intense blonde lesbian cult leader Eva who takes Dre under her wing in one of the murder’s more vulnerable moments. She’s just the slice of camp that the show needed.

Vietnamese pop singer tlinh is a pink queen of the fungi in her newest video for single ‘nếu lúc đó’ – and she’s as cute as Princess Peach herself. The track was released on the 2^nd March and was produced by long-time collaborator 2pillz. It’s the second single from tlinh’s upcoming debut album set to drop later this year.

The 22-year-old Hanoi-born rapper, singer, and dancer is one of Spotify’s most streamed artists in Vietnam and is on track to steal hearts around the globe gaining exposure through her recent billboard in Time Square, jingle for Maybelline, and incredible performance on the COLORS YouTube channel.

The video for the single, which now has over 11M views, starts with the singer elegantly reclining on a podium in a glowing dress that matches the hot pink background and her pink ghost-like subjects. Her glowy blush-heavy make-up and long floral acrylics are a treat on the eyes but the real stand out is her headdress. Baby pink mushrooms and a dramatic tulle train sprout from her head like a fungi crown. Amid her army of pink ghouls, she breaks down whilst brooding on her heartbreak before being envelopment in a consoling hug. She emerges in a gorgeous geometric tulle wedding dress complete with a long veil and raps under a drizzling sky with tears streaming down her face.

Though the singer looks every bit the soft ethereal fairy in the video her lyrics are intimate meditating on heartbreak and all the things the couple could have done differently to save the relationship. The retrospective song (the song’s title translates to “if at that time”) will be a hit with sad girlies who need a good comforting heartbreak anthem. tlinh smoothly unifies rap, pop, and R&B in the track moving between delicately sweet vocals and swift rap seamlessly – it’s the kind of girly glam that Ariana Grande fans will be all over. 

The flowy pink look was inspired by Schipiarelli, Balenciaga, and Rihanna according to tlinh’s stylist Tiger in an Instagram post with the pink colour representing a “picture perfect” life which is “hard to get in reality” reflecting the lyrics in the song. Tiger also wrote that the burn holes in the cloud-like wedding dress destroy the illusion of perfection suggesting a flawed relationship.

Born Nguyễn Thảo Linh, the singer first gained recognition in the music world when she reached the finals of Rap Việt, a national reality TV competition, and performed with beloved Vietnamese rapper Suboi. Since then, she has gained a loyal following and released a number of impressive singles including the soft ballad ‘Yêu Thầm’ alongside Hoàng Yến Chibi and TDK, the spicy Latin pop-inspired ‘Gái độc thân’, and the sensual R&B track ‘Strip ‘em Down’ featuring 2pillz.

The fiercely feminist singer is dedicated to showing strength in feminity. Earlier this month the singer performed at a concert for Billboard to celebrate International Women’s Day. “I want people who listen to my music to feel more feminine, to feel more confident,” the singer said in an interview with Paper magazine, “There are feelings I believe we all have, but that people are not used to expressing in Vietnamese. I’m here to help people — women — get in touch with those emotions”.

Warning to all those unlucky in love: all the shaky shots of the happy couple in hotel rooms, smiling on beach trips, strolling through city night-life, and kissing during concerts may make you cry “when is it my turn?!”. The music video for ‘BESO’ currently has over 14M views and is trending at number ten on YouTube.

RR is much sweeter than Rosalía’s last release in January ‘LLYLM’ (Lie Like You Love Me), which detailed a toxic love affair. Throughout the songs on the EP, the duo celebrate their relationship and present themselves as a united front with romantic lyrics about being destined to be together and an inseparable love that survives across distance.

The first track ‘BESO’ is an immediate classic with its thumping regaetón beat. Detailing both the pain of separation when the singers tour and the euphoria of being reunited, it’s a passionate song in which their love triumphs above all else. Rosalía and Rauw’s vocals slide together as they sing together, “Lo mejor que tengo/Es el amor que me das/Huele a tabaco y melon/Y a domingo en la ciudad” (“The best thing I’ve got/Is the love you give to me/It smells of tobacco and melon/And a Sunday in the city”). On ‘VAMPIROS’ the couple hit the streets for a nighttime prowl and brag about their immortality and “sharp metal fangs”. As the track’s title suggests, ‘VAMPIROS’ has a darker sultrier sound with a killer rap from Rosalía. The softest of the three tracks is ‘PROMESA’ with the couple taking it in turns to utter sweet nothings to each other over a slow treacly beat.

“For us it’s always love first and everything else later, but we skipped that this time so we could finish RR and share it with the world,” Rosalía revealed in a press release. “After more than three years these three songs are here and each one of them belongs to a different stage of love”.

“We always knew we wanted to do music together,” Alejandro added. “However, with our relationship being the focus, we had to find the right time. A long time has passed by now and finding a way to fit all my feelings for her in three songs has been nearly impossible. This means I will be spending my days writing and writing many more songs about and with her. We’re thrilled with this project. RR forever!”

Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro confirmed their relationship back in September 2021 but the two have been an item since late 2019. Rosalía helped produce and write some of Rauw’s first album Afrodisíaco (2020) and since then have worked together on Rosalía’s Motomami single ‘Chicken Teriyaki’.

Now branded the “King of Modern Reggaeton”, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Rauw Alejandro started with the dream of being a footballer. He began publishing songs on Soundcloud in 2014 to lighten his mood after being forced to quit because of an injury and by 2017 he had signed a music deal with Duars Entertainment. His first single as a lead artist, ‘Toda’ peaked at the 29th spot on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs charts in November 2018 with the remix receiving over 1 billion views on YouTube. He has now won two Latin Grammy Awards, received twelve nominations, is headlining a world tour in support of his third studio album Saturno (2022) that debuted at number 25 on the US Billboard 200, and is one half of the cutest celebrity romance around.

Rosalía making her way through a huge festival circuit this year performing at Festival Ceremonia in Mexico, Coachella in California, Primavera in Spain and Madrid, Rock Werchter in Belgium, and Lollapalooza in France to name a few. On the 26^th March, the Spanish star played Autódromo de Interlagos in São Paulo, Brazil to hundreds of thousands of fans.

So far all we know about the plot is that it will follow a fictional musician, played by  Anne Hathaway, showing her relationship with a famous fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel. 

The pop melodrama will be directed by David Lowery best known for his raved-about A24 supernatural drama A Ghost Story (2017). This will be his third A24 film having also directed the fantasy epic The Green Knight(2021). Lowery recently directed the new live-action Disney adaptation of Peter Pan, Peter Pan & Wendy(2023), which is set to premiere on Disney + on the 28^th April.

Eight-time Grammy winner Jack Antonoff has been shaping pop as we know it for years working alongside Taylor Swift the 1975, Lorde, St. Vincent, Florence and the Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Clairo to produce the albums synonymous with this decade and the 2010s. Recently he co-produced Lana Del Rey’s experimental Americana fusion record Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd released earlier this month. Charli and Jack have been buddy buddy for years and a return to collaborating felt eminent following both pair’s past successes. Back in 2015, Charli and Jack joined forces co-headlining the Charli and Jack Do Tour around America.

This is not the first time Charli’s has made a welcome appearance in an A24 film with her track ‘Hot Girls’ featuring in the satirical thriller Bodies Bodies Bodies last year. Antonoff meanwhile fashioned the 70s-style soundtrack for the hit kid’s film Minions: The Rise of Gru featuring Diana Ross, Tame Impala, St Vincent, and Kali Uchis.

To celebrate the announcement Charli shared a throwback photo of herself and Jack commenting “hate myself for this pic but it had to be done”. She also called out Pitchfork for the photo they posted of her when they announced the news sarcastically writing in the comment section, “Crushed the photo choice love you”. (She’s a blessing to our feed).

The Madonna of hyper pop herself has been teasing her return to the studio for the last month. She wittily captioned one Instagram post: “crash made me have a fair few breakdowns but next one gonna be worse. i feel it”. Charli will be performing at Coachella next month the one-of-a-kind festival held in the Colorado Desert. 

Mother Mary is set to be filmed in Germany later this year. As of now, the film has yet to receive a release date.

A dark, sleazy, brooding, yet magical aura permeates the music video shot in Tokyo directed by Samuel Ibrams, who often works with Shygirl creating the artwork for her last album Nymph. Dimly lit retro hotel rooms, glittery multicoloured LED lights, late-night karaoke sessions, adorable fawns, and nocturnal Tokyo alleyways are all caught on the smudgy shaky camera. At times the nauseating shots of unknown places from inside the body mixed with blinding white lights and dizzyingly fast cuts disorientate the viewer – thankfully we have the beautiful Shygirl and Björk’s vocals to guide us through this unsettling maze. The almost vampiric sensual Shygirl is totally captivating whether she’s staring into the camera emerging from a motel bathtub or receiving desperate kisses from lovers with a smirk on her face. Actor George Smale and model Nina Utashiro von Hahn get cosy with Shygirl playing her lucky prey in the video. 

In her verses, Björk shares her advice with Shygirl telling her, “I wish her love to you would suffice / But those bitches are not meant to satisfy” and warns her about lovers trying to steal her energy and the spotlight singing, “You’re glowing so hard / They all want to share the flight”.

Björk illuminated the meaning of her added verses in a press release writing, “Shy told me in her lyric she is talking about both different amorous interests and fame and how suddenly everyone wants something from you and you should be thrilled but you´re not and i decided to take an angle as an older ‘amour’ and give advice… because in ‘Woe’ she is asking a question and i decided to reply to it from the SUFI angle which is: enjoy the wanting and the longing and NOT getting what you want but enjoy wanting it… how the whirling dervishes reach up when they turn, it is meant to represent that longing and being content with that… also on a more everyday personal level it is about sometimes when you are not satisfied in a relationship, you should not expect your partner to heal that or fix that… rather look at him or her as a partner in crime or a fellow-not-getter… another human with that insatiable longing.”

Though Björk has reworked the song as a response to ‘Woe’ there are still glimmers of Shygirl’s original delicate vocals at the start of the track and weaved in between Björk’s new verse as well as residual touches of Sega Bodega’s production. Shygirl also demonically croons a new hair-raising bridge whilst alien-like noises crackle softly in the background.

The 90s Icelandic alt pop icon Björk released her tenth studio album Fossora last year. Taking listeners on a journey down a winding fungal-filled forest path, the album combined Björk’s distinct vocals and poetry with thumping electronica and sinister chamber music to create a very dark kind of fairytale. Björk in a rare collaborative move worked with Shygirl and her producer Sega Bodega to create a remix of the second single from the album ‘Ovule’ leading to this second collaboration between the two ground-breaking artists.

‘Woe (I See It From Your Side)’ is the third track to be released from Shygirl’s upcoming deluxe album Nymph_o which will be released on the 14^th April. Last month Shygirl gave us the dream collab by teaming up with R&B singer Tinashe for a dreamy new version of ‘Heaven’. Shygirl gave us a top tier dance track in December when she dropped the first track from the deluxe album ‘Poison (Club Shy remix)’. Prepare for more mystical reimagines of tracks from Shygirl’s album from last year Nymph from artists such as Arca, Eartheater, and Erica de Casier as well as some brand-new tracks.

Water glistens and butterflies hover around two celestial mermaids in a tropical cove. No, it’s not a mirage. It’s the new video for the much-awaited Shygirl x Tinashe remix of ‘Heaven’.

Tinashe’s delicate vocals have made the already dreamy track from Shygirl even more whimsical. The remix of the song and the hazy music video both dropped on the 28^th February with the track premiering on BBC Radio 1.

The video opens in a backroom of a restaurant as Tinashe wanders through wearing a puffy tulle dress and shades like an ultra-cool cloud. She sighs and sits down in a booth the close-up shot reveals dainty silver jewellery wrapped around her ears, neck, and lips giving a futuristic touch. Adding to the sci-fi feeling, Tinashe then whips out a glass phone and the messages show her sad expression is because she’s been stood up. Through Tinashe’s sparkly CGI tear, we’re transported to a y2k-esque mermaid’s paradise and the song begins. Shygirl shimmers and shimmies in a rocky bay wearing a skin-tight nude wet dress. A hologram Tinashe in a puffer jacket, similar to the one on the cover of Nymph, is cast on a hidden cave wall.

Both singers are wearing the dewiest make up with silvery blue glitter shadow on their lids. What really gives this video the throwback vibe is the quirky kitsch graphics. CGI butterflies, frogs, parrots, bubbles, and water droplets add a nostalgic touch with the graphics reminiscence of girl’s childhood toys. Emerging from the watery landscape aqua silhouettes of singers dance mesmerizingly to the track. Zooming through a picture frame we are back at the restaurant with Tinashe leaving looking disgruntled.

The track will be included on Shygirl’s deluxe album Nymph_o which will be out on the 14^th April. It will feature reimagined versions of all our favourites from Nymph, one of our most cherished LPs of last year, as well as insane collabs with Björk, Tinashe, Arca, Sevdaliza, Fatima Al Qadiri, Erika de Casier, Eartheater and more cutting-edge artists.

Last month the DJ and producer sat down with one of her biggest influences and recent collaborator Bjork for AnOther magazine. The kindred spirits spoke about how they were introduced through the experimental producer Arca. The duo first met after Shygirl drunk text messaged the avant-garde artist praising her music, specifically the single ‘Hunter’ which her dad gifted her. This led to Shygirl showing Björk around Soho and taking her to a restaurant with sword-swallowers to dine with her producer Sega Bodega. Björk recalls: “I was thrilled because when I said, “Where’s the best place to go now?” you were like, “Let’s just go home and DJ for each other” – which always ends up being the best choice. It’s such a musician thing when you have had people playing music half of the evening and then you get a bit tipsy and bossyboots and want to control it, to listen to what you want.”

Shygirl is currently preparing to embark on the second leg of her Nymph tour where she will be performing 14 dates across Canada and America throughout March and April. 

‘Heaven’ is the first single that Tinashe has released since ‘New to You’ which featured Calvin Harris, Offset, and Normani. The Kentucky-born LA-based R&B singer is no stranger to collabs having worked with stars such as Iggy Azalea, A$AP Rocky, Young Thug, Future, Usher, Britney Spears, Charli XCX, Kaytranada, and Cheat Codes over her career. Since her last album was in 2021 we’re hoping that her sixth LP will be on its way soon.

The duo have revamped the fifth single from The Weeknd’s 2017 album Starboy adding goosebump-inducing harmonies with Ariana’s angelic soprano delicately layered over Abel’s distinctive falsetto. It now sits at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and seems to be creeping its way up the charts. 

Grande and Tessfaye teased the collab with the former sharing a TikTok in which she appears to be singing and cutting vocal takes after a day of filming the movie adaptation of Wicked (part one of which is set to come out late next year). “Wrote and recorded a verse for my friend after a 14-hour day on set,” Grande captioned the video, “This certain exception had to be made”. Fans can hear faint isolated vocals from the singer that feature on the track in the video.

Last year, inspired by Kenny Beats praising female producers, The Weeknd tweeted his admiration for Grande’s production skills tweeting “i’ve seen Ariana work in real time. That woman is a BEAST on pro tools”.

Though Abel was dropping fire mixtapes before he met Grande it was their collab on ‘Love Me Harder’ that lit the fuse for his career. Whilst working on the song he was introduced to Swedish producer and songwriter to the stars Max Martin for the first time. The two have since worked on some of The Weeknd’s biggest hits including ‘Can’t Feel My Face’, ‘Hardest to Love’, ‘Blinding Lights’, ‘In Your Eyes’, and ‘Save Your Tears’, as well as becoming close friends. Abel acknowledged in an interview with Variety, “Ariana was kinda my foot in the door with Max, my chance to show him ‘I can play this game,’ y’know?”.

‘Die For You’ marks Ariana and Abel’s fourth collaboration having previously worked together on ‘Save Your Tears’, ‘Love Me Harder’, and ‘Off the Table’. We’re praying that Ariana joins The Weeknd on stage during his upcoming After Hours til Dawn tour – keep your fingers crossed.

Following the resurgence the track received in 2022 due to its popularity on TikTok, it was rereleased for Contemporary Hit Radio. SZA revealed she was considering releasing a remix of the same track with her own verse on her latest album SOS. Whilst it was sadly cut from the original album it still might make the deluxe version which is rumoured to have ten bonus tracks.

In other news, if you haven’t quite got your Weeknd fix his episodic concert film The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium was released on HBO Max on the 25^th February. The series lets fans who were unable to snag tics to see the maestro experience the first leg of his sold-out tour from their living room.
