Karlsson took AVAVAV to notoriety with her transformative footwear, her most famous design being the thigh-high, rubbery, green boots with long toes that went viral across Tik Tok and Instagram. Influencers such as Mia Maples were trying them out, baffled at their wacky toe design which elongated the toes and created a monster/chicken foot at the bottom. Doja Cat then also appeared at the 2021 MTV Awards sporting multi-coloured, thigh-high boots that resembled chicken’s feet at the bottom, which drew attention to the brand with their outlandish design and narrative surrounding human dysmorphia, with the addition of extra-terrestrial or animalistic elements.

The brand’s debut at Milan Fashion Week for their S/S 2023 collection was heavily discussed, with a dramatised runway that saw their models intentionally falling over whilst wearing clothing adorned with dollar signs, the slogan ‘filthy rich,’ and multiple Rolex watches that covered the models’ arms completely.

Karlsson made it clear that this was a commentary on the superficiality of the luxury fashion market and the false belief that wearing luxury brands means a person is superior. AVAVAV’s bold critique made for a memorable debut, garnering attention and much speculation surrounding their next runway show.

For AVAVAV’s F/W 2023 show, Beate Karlsson continued her commentary on the state of the fashion industry, sticking with the critique of the luxury fashion market and creating a runway show titled “Fake it Till You Break It.” This saw the models’ clothes falling away from their bodies as they made their way down the catwalk, with poor stitching and intentional rips on display as a commentary on the decreasing quality of clothing in the luxury market due to uncurbed consumption and demand for luxury goods. To end the show, Beate herself entered to give thanks to the audience when the walls began to collapse around her – marking an extravagant and poignant end to the show.

More recently, AVAVAV’s debuting of their S/S 2024 collection at MFW left the internet rocked, with Karlsson’s collection titled “No Time to Design” which appeared hasty and unfinished, with models in incomplete outfits, or dressing themselves in a rushed manner as they hastened down the runway. Again, Beate continues her discussion surrounding the lack of quality and creativity in the luxury market, parodying luxury brands humorously by implying their designs are rushed and lack creativity in order to keep up with increased demand and consumption.

Their most recent work is a collaboration between AVAVAV and East Pak – “Built to Resist,” combining durability with design as AVAVAV reimagines the traditional bag work of East Pak through multiplication of their designs and deconstruction of their more conventional bag styles. This collab appears a match made in heaven, as both brands are clear with their intentions towards the sustainability of their garments.

AVAVAV makes a strong commitment to upcycling, using scrap materials sourced from renowned brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Jacquemus and continuously using sustainable methods of designing and packaging. East Pak has also made a mission statement surrounding sustainability, aiming to reduce consumption by increasing the warranty on their products to 30 years and attempting to use recycled fabrics where possible.

Their collaboration launch saw their products packaged in rubbish bags and egg cartons, with a theme of ‘trash’ throughout the launch event and runway show as a commentary on the increasing disposability of luxury fashion and the ever-growing number of clothes sent to landfill each year.

Ester Manas is a brand focused on inclusivity and sustainability, founded in 2019 by Belgian duo Ester Manas and Balthazar Delepierre. They have received acclaim from the H&M Design Award, the Hyères Festival, the ANDAM Prize and the LVMH Prize, and have been described as “the most size-inclusive brand at fashion week” by the New York Times. If Lizzo is a fan, so are we! Pieces are made from mostly dead stock and upcycled fabrics to ensure sustainability, making Ganni a good partner as they have goals to reduce carbon emissions, switch to 100% recyclable packaging, and promote rental clothing.

Ganni is a Danish fashion brand founded as a cashmere line by Frans Truelsen in 2000. It has since transformed to focus on ready-to-wear pieces with a minimalist, ‘cool girl’ Scandinavian style seen on celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid. Ganni has previously faced criticism for a lack of larger sizes and only going up to a US 12, but extended sizes to make way for collaborations with Juicy Couture, Levis, and plus-size retailer 11 Honoré.

Together, they have created a size-inclusive resort collection consisting of 16 pieces in sizes EU32–EU52. The capsule captures the quintessential holiday vibes with cropped t-shirts, colourful dresses, and fun bikinis for any body type. Talking to I-D Magazine, Ditte Reffstrup, Creative Director of Ganni, said they wanted to “conjure that mood you’re in when you’re going on a holiday, and everything feels so light and joy-filled” as well as something that “exuded a sense of feeling confident and sexy in your own skin”. The collection is also manufactured in an eco-friendly manner, using materials like organic cotton, recycled polyamide, and recycled polyester mesh.

The makeup brand has since confirmed that the collection is inspired by denim, and so the blue hue on the first post starts to make a lot of sense. The cosmetic collaboration will span across both makeup and skincare, featuring four products: the Denim Daze Eyeshadow Palette, Perfect pHit Lip Balm, Get Cheeky Clay Mask, and the Beauty Is In Your Jeans Vault. 

The Denim Daze Eyeshadow Palette features 12 shades with some inspired by a classic denim blue (as you would expect), others are inspired by the versatility of denim bringing in alternative shades of grey and brown. However, the classic denim feel is still detectable throughout the palette as it is predominantly cool toned and channels the edgier aesthetic that we associate with the denim revival. There are 5 shimmer shades and 7 matte which is a perfect balance for a versatile palette that can be used to create a variety of eye looks, which is pretty good for $16 if you ask us.

Do not be alarmed by what appears to be a blue lipstick in the collection; the Perfect pHit Lip Balm is not actually blue. The $8 lip balm changes colour when applied to the lips to create “your ultimate pink lip”. While I have always found these colour-changing products to be slightly gimmicky, some have proved to be very popular in the past and it will be interesting to see how this lip product holds up within this market.

The Get Cheeky Clay Mask is being marketed as a hydrating and pore refining mask for “*both* sets of cheeks”. From this we can infer that the mask will be suitable for both your face and body, but other than that we don’t know too much about this product. All we do know is that it retails for $11 and hopefully, we will get more information and an ingredients list once the product launches on the 30^th. 

The Beauty Is In Your Jeans Vault contains all three of the cosmetic products in the collection but also comes in a denim make-up bag by American Eagle. The Vault costs $50, whereas if you were to buy the collection individually it would only cost $35, so keep this in mind while you’re shopping. This being said, the collection does celebrate all things denim and so including the carry all in this campaign really ties the whole thing together. If you were on the hunt for a cute make-up bag, look no further.

The collection will be available in the US on March 30^th, 2023, on elfcosmetics.com and AE.com as well as in select American Eagle stores.

For fans of Taylor-Joy, this partnership will come as no surprise since Anya has sported several designs and creations courtesy of the Dior House during her recent red carpet and award show appearances. One of her most memorable looks was from her Critics Choice appearance, with Dior branding Anya as ‘the epitome of modern elegance’ as she wore a purple draped macramé-detailed tulle gown from the SS20 Collection.

So far, the designs presented by Anya have showcased the creations of Women’s Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. This collaboration will continue throughout the partnership, and will also see Anya work with Creative and Image Director of Makeup, Peter Philips. 

This partnership will bring us an exciting string of designs and creations, whilst celebrating Dior’s iconic culture. For Anya, being Brand Ambassador for one of the best fashion houses in the world proves she is a force to be reckoned with on and off-screen, and we can’t wait to see the next Dior and Anya creation brought to life.
