With billions of streams on her account and sold-out shows, Karol G, a Colombian music icon, made the last Valentine’s Day even sweeter for us, dropping her and Tiësto’s new single and video “Contigo” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCmp7AV8O9s). The video has already over ten million views on YouTube – but by the time this text reaches you, the numbers may well have doubled, as Karol G’s fans are very much devoted to their idol – after all, they ensured she became the first female artist to sell out the Estadio Azteca (with its capacity of 80k) in Mexico, for three consecutive nights during her latest Mañana Será Bonito Latam Tour. But don’t worry if you’re not in Latin America right now (you couldn’t buy the tickets anyway, as they’ve mostly sold out) – Karol G is to visit Europe this Summer, with two shows in London – make sure you note 18/06 and 19/06 in your calendars!

 Karol G (Carolina Giraldo Navarro) has earned herself a stable position at the top of Latin pop music. Just this year, having been announced Billboard’s 2024 Woman of the Year, she won her first Grammy for Mañana Será Bonito, in the category Best Música Urbana Album. In her over ten-year-long career, which rocketed astonishingly over the last few years, Karol G has published four albums, made collabs with Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Anuel AA, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Maluma, and Ozuna, and won many awards, including five Latin Grammys (three just this year), MTV Video Music Award, and iHeartRadio Music Award. Karol G has been lately conquering both the music industry and our Spotify accounts, with ca. 50mln listeners per month (48th position worldwide!) and her track “Provenza” reaching over 1 billion streams last year. With such numbers and her latest acting debut in Griselda on Netflix (playing Carla), the singer shows her career is in full bloom, and she whets our appetites for more to come in 2024.

 Her latest single “Contigo,” accompanied by a video, satisfies them (or, actually, makes us even more eager to see the shows in June!). Produced by WeOwnTheCity and co-created by Karol G, Pedro Artola, and Tiësto, the clip tells the love story of two girls (starring Karol G and Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko), who – in a nostalgic, bitter-sweet setting of the Noughties – try to fight for their love when facing hurdles. The song itself offers an irresistible mix of Latin beats, pop, and Tiësto dance music – we couldn’t imagine a better foreshadowing of the coming Spring and Summer festival season!

 The video will surely be a major inspo for those attending the festivals – with its warm, soft colours, pleasing sunlight, pink, glitter, and – last but not least – the iconic 2000s fashion. The clip makes you remember the good, old times of colourful, sequined crop tops, tattoo chokers everyone was obsessed with, jeans and camo mini dresses, butterfly hairclips, and shiny belts, much too bulky to serve a purpose other than aesthetic. It is mostly inside of an apartment reverberating with the Noughties vibes that we see the story of the two lovers unfold – them playing old-school video games, dancing in baggy, low-waist jeans, and taking photos with an instant camera. Every detail has been taken care of, as we see the couple wearing purely 2000s makeup – sparkly eyeshadows, glossy lips, and bright pink blush, accompanied by hairdos from the era – cute face-framing braids and pink highlights in Karol G’s creamy platinum blonde hair. The Noughties vibe gets even stronger once we see Karol G singing, leaning against a wall with colourful mappings on it – the associations of Rihanna’s 2011 “We Found Love” shots instantly come to mind.

Then, we move to a place even more reminiscent of the (as it turns out) bitter-sweet 2000s – a high school, having the atmosphere of Britney Spears’ iconic “Baby One More Time,” with a white-blue dominant colour palette, pink Converse, white shirts, bandanas, and baggy cargo trousers. It is at school (well, where else?…) that the problems in the up-until-that-point idyllic relationship arise, and the couple needs to split. They happily get to reunite in a 2000s club – with Tiësto as DJ, and his dance beats framing the whole clip and leading to a lived-happily-ever-after ending. It is in this final part that both the video’s couple and Karol G’s fans can carelessly immerse themselves in Tiësto’s uplifting music, inspired by Leona Lewis’ 2007 “Bleeding Love.” For Karol G, the love eventually stops bleeding, so that she’s ultimately able to sing firmly: “contigo” (“with you”) – and we can’t help singing along.

A dark, sleazy, brooding, yet magical aura permeates the music video shot in Tokyo directed by Samuel Ibrams, who often works with Shygirl creating the artwork for her last album Nymph. Dimly lit retro hotel rooms, glittery multicoloured LED lights, late-night karaoke sessions, adorable fawns, and nocturnal Tokyo alleyways are all caught on the smudgy shaky camera. At times the nauseating shots of unknown places from inside the body mixed with blinding white lights and dizzyingly fast cuts disorientate the viewer – thankfully we have the beautiful Shygirl and Björk’s vocals to guide us through this unsettling maze. The almost vampiric sensual Shygirl is totally captivating whether she’s staring into the camera emerging from a motel bathtub or receiving desperate kisses from lovers with a smirk on her face. Actor George Smale and model Nina Utashiro von Hahn get cosy with Shygirl playing her lucky prey in the video. 

In her verses, Björk shares her advice with Shygirl telling her, “I wish her love to you would suffice / But those bitches are not meant to satisfy” and warns her about lovers trying to steal her energy and the spotlight singing, “You’re glowing so hard / They all want to share the flight”.

Björk illuminated the meaning of her added verses in a press release writing, “Shy told me in her lyric she is talking about both different amorous interests and fame and how suddenly everyone wants something from you and you should be thrilled but you´re not and i decided to take an angle as an older ‘amour’ and give advice… because in ‘Woe’ she is asking a question and i decided to reply to it from the SUFI angle which is: enjoy the wanting and the longing and NOT getting what you want but enjoy wanting it… how the whirling dervishes reach up when they turn, it is meant to represent that longing and being content with that… also on a more everyday personal level it is about sometimes when you are not satisfied in a relationship, you should not expect your partner to heal that or fix that… rather look at him or her as a partner in crime or a fellow-not-getter… another human with that insatiable longing.”

Though Björk has reworked the song as a response to ‘Woe’ there are still glimmers of Shygirl’s original delicate vocals at the start of the track and weaved in between Björk’s new verse as well as residual touches of Sega Bodega’s production. Shygirl also demonically croons a new hair-raising bridge whilst alien-like noises crackle softly in the background.

The 90s Icelandic alt pop icon Björk released her tenth studio album Fossora last year. Taking listeners on a journey down a winding fungal-filled forest path, the album combined Björk’s distinct vocals and poetry with thumping electronica and sinister chamber music to create a very dark kind of fairytale. Björk in a rare collaborative move worked with Shygirl and her producer Sega Bodega to create a remix of the second single from the album ‘Ovule’ leading to this second collaboration between the two ground-breaking artists.

‘Woe (I See It From Your Side)’ is the third track to be released from Shygirl’s upcoming deluxe album Nymph_o which will be released on the 14^th April. Last month Shygirl gave us the dream collab by teaming up with R&B singer Tinashe for a dreamy new version of ‘Heaven’. Shygirl gave us a top tier dance track in December when she dropped the first track from the deluxe album ‘Poison (Club Shy remix)’. Prepare for more mystical reimagines of tracks from Shygirl’s album from last year Nymph from artists such as Arca, Eartheater, and Erica de Casier as well as some brand-new tracks.

Shygirl is currently on the second leg of her Nymph tour performing across the US and Canada until mid-April. She will also be performing at Wide Awake festival in London in May.

Doja Cat – Vegas

This month, we got our first glimpse into what to expect from the upcoming ELVIS film. Once again showing us just how versatile she is, Doja teamed up with Shonka to sample ‘Hound Dog’, creating a modern take on a classic Elvis track. We have had ‘Vegas’ on repeat the past couple of weeks!

Alex Rzyan – Hot Headed

‘Hot Headed’ is the track that is validating all our impulsive feelings throughout Mercury retrograde, with lyricism based on how being quick-tempered can affect your relationship. Although the lyrics are feisty as ever, the accompaniment of ‘Hot Headed’ is subtle and laid-back, featuring smooth guitar lines and a downtempo shuffled drum pattern.

Becky G – Bailé Con Mi Ex

Bailé Con Mi Ex is the latest single from Becky’s second album ‘Esquemas’, which finally dropped last Friday, 13th May. The track radiates delightful energy bursting with disco-pop characteristics, as Becky sings lyrics on the subject of reconnecting with an ex. The album itself is pretty exciting too, as Becky stands in her spotlight, shining in both collaborations and solo tracks.

Post Malone, Roddy Rich – Cooped Up 

Nothing says summer quite like a Post Malone track, and we were so excited to see that he is finally back on the music scene! ‘Cooped Up’ takes us on Post’s journey of letting go of the pandemic blues that we all relate to, and the feelings of being stuck. The track comes as the first release of his upcoming album, coming June 3rd and will feature collaborations with the likes of Doja Cat and Kid Laroi. 

Fivio Foreign, Chloe, KayCyy – Hello 

Teaming up to deliver a smooth and catchy rap track this month were Fivio Foreign, Chloe and KayCyy. The collaboration comes from Fivio’s latest album ‘B.I.B.L.E’ which was released earlier this year in April. The trio came together for an energetic and attitude driven video in a typical drill setting, as they perform romantic lyrics. 

Madeline the Person – MEAN!

Currently blowing up on Tiktok as a result of the emotional and relatable lyrics on the subject of those who use ‘honesty’ as a way to hurt your feelings, this song is one of the most vulnerable and beautiful tracks out at the minute. Complete with heavenly harmonies, relaxed acoustic guitar motifs and an inventive melody, this needs to be in your playlist!

Jack Harlow – Dua Lipa

One of the current biggest heartthrobs around, Jack Harlow, has just released his latest album ‘Come Home The Kids Miss You’. Following high anticipation and many viral moments, Harlow’s album has shot to number 3 on the Billboard charts, proving he is a force to be reckoned with. Aside from the chart-topper ‘First Class’, the track on everyone’s lips is ‘Dua Lipa’, in which Jack goes on to say “Dua Lipa, I’m trying to do more with her than do a feature”… Talk about being bold!

A$AP Rocky- D.M.B.

Proving nothing is coming between him and his baby mama, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky broke the internet earlier this month with the video for his latest track ‘D.M.B.’. Featuring different setups of him and Riri, whether they are partying or hustling, the couple takes us on a journey that only proves more so to the world that they are stronger than ever. The song itself has all the attitude you would expect from an A$AP track whilst coming across as a love letter to Rihanna, with an apparent line being “She got bank accounts too, with big amounts, shit you couldn’t count”. 

Pip Millett – Downright

We can always rely on Pip Millett to hit us right in the feels, and this month was no exception. ‘Downright’ is based on Pip’s struggle with depression, brought to life through a Lo-Fi style beat that crescendos into a potent chorus in which Pip sings “I know you still need me when I’m down. Down is just downright, Get the fuck out of my head”. 

Camila Cabello, Maria Becerra – Hasta Los Dientes 

Following the release of Camila’s latest triumphant album ‘Familia’, she has treated us to one of the most vibrant and fun videos we have seen from her. ‘Hasta Los Dientes’ is a celebration of great pop music, sung in Spanish by both Camila and collaborator Maria Becerra. The duo take on a plethora of vivid wigs, extravagant outfits and infectious choreography; you need to watch this! 

Kendrick Lamar – The Heart Part 5

You can’t deny the buzz surrounding Kendrick Lamar right now, as his long-awaited album ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ dropped last week. To get us hyped for the album, Kendrick dropped ‘The Heart Part 5’, a release pattern he has used since the early stages of his career, as a means to share the mindset he is currently in. The track sees Lamar seamlessly blend live instruments and string sections with his classic staccato flow, as he raps heartfelt lyrics on the subject of what it means to him to be an influential figure, creating positive change. The video sees Kendrick transform into multiple culturally influential black figures, relating directly to the lyrics of the song.

Lyrically, ‘Freaky Deaky’ entails many sexual innuendos and gives us a glimpse into Tyga and Doja’s fantasies. This honest and unapologetic attitude is something that struck gold for the pair in 2019, with critics praising the candid lyricism surrounding the topic of body positivity.

The tongue in cheek lyrics of ‘Freaky Deaky’ are juxtaposed with innocent and upbeat pop production, met with a hip hop beat to keep the flow groovin’ throughout the track. This innocence is further accentuated with Doja’s smooth angelic vocals in the song’s main hook.

The music video may be our favourite element of this collaboration as we yet again get a glimpse into the innovation and uniqueness the pair are capable of producing when it comes to visuals.

We firstly see Doja and Tyga enter a world of super-advanced technology, enabling them to try on outfits and makeup without having to move a finger. Doja teases Tyga throughout the video, taking him on a ride through an amusement park before he can even get close to her. Of course, the main attraction of this park is Doja Cat – and the ride stops in perfect timing to display Doja living her dominatrix fantasy as she delivers a catchy rap verse.

Tune into BBCRadio1 today at 6pm UK / 10 AM LA / 1PM NY and listen to it’s premiere with Clara Amfo.

This comes as the first collaboration between the two artists, but, it has been months since the song was first teased to fans. Following the tease, both Charli and Rina featured on Lady Gaga’s ‘Dawn Of Chromatica’ album released in September 2021, creating even more of a buzz in the lead up to the release of ‘Beg For You’.

Listening to this song brought back a familiar euphoric feeling, in a similar way to how 2000s club classics had us feeling back in the day. This is due to the sampling of the 2008 hit ‘Cry For You (You’ll Never See Me Again)’ by September, which we think is just genius. Charli and Rina have slightly amended the lyrics of the main hook to fit their song’s agenda, bringing a lustful yet fierce attitude to this club classic. 

The track is accompanied with a sensual video that sees both Rina and Charli rocking silk ivory dresses reminiscent of night gowns. The pair embrace each other whilst the wind floats through their tousled hair and the moon highlights their dewy, glossy makeup.

‘Beg For You’ is set to appear on Charli XCX’s upcoming album ‘Crash’, which is to be released on 18 March via Asylum / Atlantic.

Shenseea brings the energy with her verse and hook, intertwining melodic phrasing with snappy rapping. Megan also brings the fire with her verse, with a fast-paced hard-hitting rap bound to make you feel empowered.

If the immense production and performance of the song weren’t enough, the video includes saucy visuals sure to get your heart racing. From ice cream, sex toys, lollipops to candy floss, this video doesn’t leave much to your imagination! However, we love to see two women feeling empowered and in control of their sexuality, and this video gives us that. 

Shenseea has had an exciting run-up to this latest single, from being featured on Kanye West’s recent, now Grammy-nominated, album ‘DONDA’ (“Ok Ok Pt 2” and “Pure Souls”) to playing her first-ever U.S. festivals with Rolling Loud in Miami and New York.

‘Lick’ comes as the first single to be released from Shenseea’s upcoming debut album ‘Alpha’, and judging by the success Shenseaa has had in previous years, and how this new single is sounding, we have a feeling we are in for big things.

Firstly, Mary released ‘Good Morning Gorgeous’, the title track of her upcoming album (which will be released on February 11th). Mary sings on the subject of self-love, and how every morning she looks in the mirror to say “Good Morning Gorgeous”. Mary wrote the song with D’Mile, H.E.R., Lucky Daye, and Tiara Thomas, resulting in a rich R&B sound, a classic style for Blige which suits her to a T. 

The track is accompanied by a sensual music video, in which Blige rocks some gorgeous lingerie, proving her beauty has only continued to amplify throughout her career, which now spans over three decades. 

The second song is a collaboration with the infamous DJ Khaled, titled ‘Amazing’. The track sees Mary sing about her positive attitude, with the hook ringing;

“Every day celebrate, not just on occasion // 

I feel good, I feel great, man, I feel amazing”

The optimistic lyricism combined with the empowering Hip-Hop instrumental equates to an empowering track that makes you feel ready to take on whatever life throws at you. 

If we are to go by these two tracks, we are set for a pretty amazing album next year. The record coincides with Mary’s Superbowl halftime show performance, with the release coming two days prior.  

Speaking on her upcoming album, Mary said;

“Working on this new album has been so much fun, I’m excited for my fans to hear these first two songs to give them a taste of what’s to come. I’m grateful to all my collaborators and partners who have walked with me through this process and even more grateful to my fans who I hope have a blast with this new music.”

This release comes after a year of success for Anitta, having recently made history as the first Brazilian artist to perform at the MTV VMAs, and dominating the spotlight during Billboard’s Latin music week. 2021 has also seen Anitta make her debut on the top 40 in the US with ‘Girl From Rio’, a track that is currently sitting at over 100 million total streams.

With the success of this year, and Anitta finding her feet with releasing music in English, it seems like the perfect time to start teasing an album release, and we can expect this during the next few months as Anitta is currently putting the finishing touches on her debut album for Warner Records. 

‘Faking Love’ saw Anitta join forces with Los Angeles-based director duo Bradley & Pablo, resulting in a cheeky and stylistic music video. The video further explores Anitta’s performance skills, as she executes a polished dance routine staying perfectly aligned with the fast-paced tropical beat. Another video highlight is seeing Anitta and Saweetie together in person, bringing their fiery collab to life.

In context to the song, Kali says; “This is Latin R&B, this is SZA singing in Spanish for the very first time, this is spooky season, this IS the moment.” Accompanying the song is a sultry neon-lit video directed by Daniel Sannwald.

The original ‘Fue Mejor’ comes from Uchis’ highly praised 2020 album ‘Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios)’. The album features the global smash hit ‘telepatía,’ which recently surpassed 1.4 billion streams, after hitting #1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay and topping Latin Digital Song Sales for 10 weeks straight. ‘Telepatía’ is the longest-running Spanish-language song by a solo act on the Billboard Hot 100 this decade (23 weeks) and peaked at #10 on the Global 200. 

Kali’s success doesn’t stop here; Earlier this September she won her first Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Pop Album of the Year. This is an award that tops off a victorious year for Uchis, having won her first Grammy for Best Dance Recording with Kaytranada earlier this year. 

The Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th to October 15th in the United States, and to celebrate this Kali is the face of Amazon Music’s new global playlist FLUENT, which includes her cover of Selena’s ‘Si Una Vez’. She will also be performing at the 34^th Hispanic Heritage Awards on October 8th, where she will be recognised as the 2021 Inspira Honoree.

The latter months of 2021 and the start of 2022 are looking promising for Kali, with the recent release of her self-designed, sustainable denim collection OBSESIÓN, made in Colombia from her debut clothing brand ‘Bodied by Uchis’. She will also support Tyler, The Creator on his North American tour next year.
