‘Rumors’ merges Lizzo’s funky pop with Cardi’s rap to create a perfectly groovy track that empowers the listener. Known for their lyricism on sexual liberation and female empowerment, this song is no different – the successful duo regains power throughout the song, declaring ‘all the rumors are true’ and establishing their narrative, rather than the media’s. The collaboration takes shots at their online criticism, particularly as women who vocalize their sexuality.

Directed by Tanu Muino, the music video depicts Lizzo and Cardi as mythological goddesses. Dripping in gold, the video blends Olypianium aesthetics with Greco-Roman vases and ornate jewelry. The successful duo is rewriting an aesthetic often filled with narratives of male dominance and female passivity into a music video starring only women with self-empowering lyricism.

Lizzo opens the music video dawned in glinting layered beads – her multiple arm cuffs drip gold beads, matching the sets encompassing her elaborate, laurel headdress. Her shiny gold, draped gown is the first of many gold looks to be seen in the ‘Rumors’ music video, and could possibly become a staple of Lizzo’s new era. Lizzo and Cardi both have elaborate manicures for the video of gold, jewel-encrusted nails catching light and movement. Cardi shines in a custom gold breastplate from Misha Japanwala, a Laurel DeWitt belly chain across her pregnant stomach, Schiaparelli earrings, with a toga skirt and gladiator sandals. Lizzo closes the video with a sheer, jewel-encrusted bodysuit, draped with white fabric and spiraling patterns.

ALBUMS

London Grammar – Californian Soil

London Grammar dropped their third studio album last week, after delaying its initial release date by two months. The trio have been making music for several years and wanted to use the platform of Californian Soilto talk about some of their experiences in the music industry – in particular the misogyny inflicted upon band member Hannah Reid. In an interview with NME, Reid commented how: 

“This record is about gaining possession of my own life. You imagine success will be amazing. Then you see it from the inside and ask, ‘Why am I not controlling this thing? Why am I not allowed to be in control of it? And does that connect, in any way to being a woman? If so, how can I do that differently?’”

Taylor Swift – Fearless

Global superstar Taylor Swift dropped her first re-recorded studio album on April 9^th, Fearless. Her first album of 2021 – and her first set of re-recorded songs since her falling out with Scooter Braun in 2019 – Fearlessrevisits some of Swift’s most popular hits while reasserting her ownership of her music. The album consists of the nineteen tracks from the original 2008 album, as well as six additional songs ‘From the Vault’. With the album’s growing popularity on the charts, it appears that the love for Swift’s music hasn’t faded a bit since its original release. Since its release, Fearless has gone on to top the charts in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, and Ireland.

Saweetie – Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1 EP

Californian rapper Saweetie released a seven-track EP on April 17^th as a precursor to the summer season. Featuring collaborations with Kendra Jae, Bbyafrika, Lourdiz, Loui, and Drakeo The Ruler, Pretty Summer Playlist: Season 1 EP gears up its listeners for a party in the heat of summer. The music video for the lead single, ‘Risky (ft. Drakeo The Ruler)’, dropped the day before the EP and perfectly encapsulates the Y2K summer aesthetic we’re all dreaming of this year. Colourful, bouncy, and sexy, ‘Risky’ marks a promising start for the warmer months of 2021. 

SINGLES

Years and Years – ‘Starstruck’

Marking their first release since the band announced it would become an Olly Alexander solo project, ‘Starstruck’ is an upbeat pop song that play on the fizzy first steps of love. The single was released on April 12^th with an accompanying music video, which sees two versions of Alexander acting out the roles of main character and love interest (very Covid-friendly). Dancing around an elaborately decorated hotel, Alexander acts out a game of cat and mouse with himself in a bid to get away from his own advances. Speaking to NME, Alexander explained: “‘Starstruck’ is about the rush you get when you’re with somebody you’re really into, it’s about holding onto a good feeling and not letting it go.”

Rina Sawayama & Elton John – ‘Chosen Family’

Perhaps one of the least expected collaborations of this year, Rina Sawayama and Sir Elton John’s ‘Chosen Family’ is a soulful ballad about healing with the people you find within groups of people – friends that become family. The message highlighted is especially prominent in terms of the LGBTQ+ community, of which Sir Elton and Sawayama are both part of: “We don’t need to be related to relate / We don’t need to share genes or a surname / You are, you are / My chosen, chosen family”. The heartfelt song comes a year after Sawayama had to fight for her right to be nominated for The Mercury Prize and BRIT Awards – a movement which gained a lot of support from Sir Elton online. 

Regard, Troye Sivan & Tate McRae – ‘You’

We’ve been excited for this collaboration since we heard about it. ‘You’ was produced by Kosovo-Albanian DJ Regard, and features vocals from Troye Sivan and Tate McRae. Although released on April 16^th, a snippet of the song was teased on Sivan’s TikTok earlier this month, where he posted a video of McRae and himself singing along to the track. The dance-based, techno pop song is a rhythmic duet that incorporates elements of a sensual slow-build. An accompanying lyric video, split into three versions, was also made available on each artist’s YouTube Channel, so fans can channel the summery dance vibes from home.

We need to talk about the music coming out this month.

As if March wasn’t explosive enough – with the likes of Lil Nas X, Zara Larsson, Silk Sonic, Drake, and Jorja Smith all releasing albums, music, and videos – it looks like April is set to be another great month for music.

Despite being only the first week of the month, the quality we’re now seeing has given many musicians a VIP pass straight into our favourite playlists. Chart-topping heavyweights Demi Lovato, Olivia Rodrigo, and BTS have all chipped in with exciting new projects, while debut soloist Rosé has impressed with her first single album. Justin Bieber has even made it back onto our radar after surprising us all with a new EP just weeks after the release of Justice.

But never mind our nattering, check out the music that has welcomed the start of April with a bang.

Demi Lovato – Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over

Demi Lovato’s much-anticipated seventh studio album was released on the 2^nd of April, having been preceded by the singles ‘Anyone’, ‘What Other People Say’, and ‘Dancing with the Devil’ in the first quarter of 2021. The album follows Lovato’s period of recovery following her hospitalisation from a drug overdose in 2018, drawing on themes of recovery and self-empowerment. Acting as an ode to the darker times in her life and career, Dancing with the Devil… the Art of Starting Over captures Lovato’s highs and lows in raw honesty. This album marks Lovato’s taking ownership of her vulnerabilities, flaws, and fears, and signifies her ongoing journey towards self-love and liberation.

A YouTube docu-series, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, was also released last month to accompany the album, and provides a more in-depth look at the events of 2018. You can check it out here.

Rosé – ‘Gone’

Rosé is best known for her work as a member of K-Pop girl band BLACKPINK, but 2021 marked the year she took her first steps into a solo career. Releasing her debut single album R last month, Rosé dropped two music videos. The lead single, ‘On the Ground’, came out on March 12^th, and peaked at No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 – making Rosé the highest charting Korean female solo artist in the US.

The music video for her second single, ‘Gone’, came out on April 5

^th – much to the excitement of fans all over the world. The song and its subsequent music video explore the mourning of a lost relationship, a popular topic for most love songs. The song is anything but typical, however, if the beautiful visuals and soft rock overtones are anything to go by. The track comprises all the components of a successful romantic ballad, as well as a suitable amount of angst to keep the narrative engaging.

Justin Bieber – Freedom

We’ve lost track of how many times we’ve talked about Justin Bieber these last few months. Following a string of chart-topping singles, the Canadian singer finally released his sixth studio album, Justice, on March 19^th. But this obviously wasn’t enough excitement for Bieber, who weeks later released a surprise EP titled Freedom on April 4^th. Bieber had a central role in the EP’s production and has writing credits in every track.

Unlike the crowd-pleasing commercial releases of the singer’s previous work, Freedom directly reflects on his experiences growing up in the public eye and the mistakes he made along the way. Culminating in a meditation on his current circumstances, the gospel-inspired extended play emphasises how Bieber’s spiritual and religious beliefs intertwine with his everyday life.

Olivia Rodrigo – ‘déjà vu’

2021 appears to be THE year for Olivia Rodrigo, who made waves back in January with her debut single ‘Driver’s License’. Preceding the release of her debut album later this year, the singer dropped another single: ‘déjà vu’. The track is already making the rounds on TikTok, with its dreamy intro and romantic aesthetic catching the attention of many fans across the platform. The song is characterised by a psychedelic indie-pop sound that lends itself well to the themes of heartbreak, fantasy, and obsession in the video.

Perfectly attuned to Gen Z trends, the music video adopts a nineties-noughties aesthetic that belies the darker realities of the narrative. Following a love triangle in which Rodrigo’s ex has moved on to another girl, the story highlights how the ex now recreates the ‘special moments’ he once had with Rodrigo (hence ‘déjà vu’). This realisation fuels Rodrigo’s resentment for her ex as well as a growing obsession with his new lover, who the singer tries to mimic throughout the video.

BTS – ‘Film Out’

In the lead up to the release of their third Japanese album in June, K-Pop superstars BTS dropped ‘Film Out’ on April 2

^nd. The song also features as the ending theme for the Japanese film Signal The Movie Cold Case Investigation Unit. Co-written by BTS member Jungkook and lead singer of the Japanese band Iyori Shimizu, the track is a ballad characterised by a slow build up and dramatic crescendo that highlights the narrative of being unable to save something or someone.

The music video builds on this storyline, presenting all seven members in a house thinking back on the past. In time the members also fade, becoming the memories they once cherished and tried to recall. The explosion of a drained hourglass signifies a turning point in the song, as the music hits a dramatic high and the house used for filming bursts into chaotic flames. Unable to control this turn of events, the video delivers the message that we aren’t always able to save the things or people we love the most.

Yet To Come…

That’s not all we’re going to see this month, either. Several albums and singles are set to drop this April, giving the month a needed energy boost as we come out of lockdown. Keep an eye out for Taylor Swift’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version), dropping April 9^th, London Grammar’s upcoming third studio album Californian Soil, set to be released on April 16^th, and Noah Cyrus and JP Harding’s debut EP People Don’t Change, scheduled for April 23^rd (to name a few!).

Now a quarter of the way into 2021, it’s safe to say that not even a global pandemic could stop the music industry from flourishing and thriving. Musicians across the world continue to surprise and impress, bringing a much-needed breath of fresh air to what has felt like an eternity indoors.

With new releases from the likes of Jorja Smith, Bebe Rexha, and Justin Bieber getting us back into the groove of normalcy, we thought we’d run through some of the music we can’t switch off this month.

So, grab your nearest pair of headphones, get your Spotify ready, and crank up the volume. We’ve got some music you’re going to want to hear.

Drake

Following the delay of his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, Drake dropped the EP Scary Hours 2 on March 5^th. Set as a sequel to 2018’s Scary Hours, the EP highlights Drake’s ability to deliver punchy verses while riding a catchy a beat. Meant to give fans a taste of what Drake will deliver with his upcoming album, the three tracks that make up Scary Hours 2 are successful in hyping up those hungry for new music. The music video for the EP’s opening track, ‘What’s Next’, sees Drake dancing in an empty Toronto, reaffirming the musician’s affinity for the urban aesthetics of his hometown. Matching heavy trap beats and clever wordplay with Drake’s signature swagger, ‘What’s Next’ delivers a masterclass in commercial hip-hop that will have many fans eagerly awaiting the release of Certified Lover Boy.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber started 2021 on a high with the release of ‘Anyone’, which later peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With his newest album, Justice, just around the corner (mark March 19^th on your calendars), fans were more than excited when Bieber dropped ‘Hold On’ just weeks in advance. ‘Hold On’ plays to Bieber’s trademark hero image, as he croons to his fans “You know you can call me if you need someone” and reflects on the feeling of losing your sense of self. The music video, which sees Bieber on the run from police after getting into some shady business in order to pay for his partner’s hospital treatment, provides the perfect narrative for the dramaticism of ‘Hold On’.

Silk Sonic

The Bruno Mars x Anderson Paak collaboration we never knew we needed has finally dropped, taking on the title of R&B supergroup, Silk Sonic. Knowing that Mars and Paak have worked together on various projects in the past, including Chic’s 2018 album It’s About Time, many fans were excited to see their friendship and working relationship evolve further. They didn’t disappoint either. Following the announcement of their collaboration in late February, the duo dropped the single ‘Leave The Door Open’ just a week later on March 5^th. The R&B soul song builds on the pair’s affinity for jazz-inspired party music, creating a syrupy sound that emphasises the sultriness of the lyrics. Silk Sonic’s debut album, An Evening With Silk Sonic, is expected to be released later this year.

Madison Beer

Marking 2021 with the release of her debut studio album, Life Support, Madison Beer has entered our radar as a powerhouse to keep an eye on. Following the release of multiple hit singles last year, the singer announced she would release her first full-length album in February 2021 alongside the single ‘Boyshit’. The single itself is a guitar and bass driven track which pushes back on the manipulations of a male partner, with the focal line “I don’t speak boyshit” highlighting Beer’s determination to take back power in a relationship that has become undermined by the effects of toxic masculinity. The music video is a mishmash of romantic visuals inspired by cult films like Blue Velvet and The Heathers, that sits alongside scenes of a girls’ military-style bootcamp. Promoting a message of self-worth and female empowerment, ‘Boyshit’ is clear in its insinuation that no man is worth the emotional exertion.

Doja Cat

The queen of TikTok soundtracks is back with ‘Streets’, a revival of a track from Doja Cat’s 2019 album Hot Pink. The song gained attention earlier this year on TikTok through the Silhouette Challenge, which uses a red-light filter to block out silhouettes as the user poses naked. Paired with Paul Anka’s ‘Put Your Head On My Shoulder’, ‘Streets’ became synonymous with the viral trend of thirst trapping. With the #SilhouetteChallenge now at an impressive 17.8 million views, Doja Cat has launched herself back into the charts – and how better to celebrate than with a brand-new music video? Released on March 9^th, the music video depicts the singer in a game of cat and mouse with a New York cab driver (Kofi Siriboe). The video also pays homage to the song’s success on TikTok, as Doja Cat uses the opening of the song to perform the Silhouette Challenge from a shop window.

Bebe Rexha

Another release we’re loving this March is Bebe Rexha’s ‘Sacrifice’, a pop-infused house track intended to “give the gays everything they want” – and boy, did Rexha deliver. Dubbed an official ‘gay bop’ by fans, ‘Sacrifice’ references elements of queer music that have raised the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Madonna to icon status. However, it’s Rexha’s brand of pulsing club music and unabashed sexual intrigue that sets her apart as one to watch. ‘Sacrifice’ sees Rexha step into the role of badass vampire queen, putting on a show of leading unsavoury men to their inevitable doom. Whether rampaging through hospitals to steal her next meal or dancing in the bloody rain of a nightclub, Rexha proves she can play the rule-breaking femme fatale as well as any actress. The energetic rhythm of ‘Sacrifice’ is bound to be a clubbing staple when lockdown measures lift later this year, so we suggest you get to hit the dancefloor.

Jorja Smith

Rounding off our list is Jorja Smith, whose new single ‘Addicted’ dropped earlier today. The song marks Smith’s first release since October 2020, and fans were more than ready to welcome her back onto the music scene. ‘Addicted’ carries a slow and easy vibe that contrasts with the lyrical discussion of being unable to move on from a lover that has no interest in maintaining a relationship. But this contrast is what emphasises the cleverness of Smith’s lyricism, as the catchy beat makes ‘Addicted’ a song you will continue to sing long after it has ended – reinforcing the demand that “You should be addicted”. The accompanying music video is just as intriguing. Packed with stunning visuals that play on the luminosity of different textures, the music video sees Smith wandering around a lavish home she can’t seem to leave. While possibly a metaphor for the lyrics, the setting also echoes the current lockdown situation. In this respect, ‘Addicted’ extends Smith’s empathy for shared plight of the current times, allowing her to connect more directly with her fans. With so much to unpack in one song, we couldn’t agree more with Smith: we should be addicted.

The success and popularity of Hispanic music is no news to us, the global music landscape has always been characterised by their lyricism and catchy rhythm. Since the days of Daddy Yankee and Don Omar and to this day with the growing success of Bad Bunny.

However, Hispanic songs aren’t exclusive to this genre, with the evolution of various artists in these past years we have increasingly become aware of the expansive talent that diversifies it. A new generation of talent that has reached audiences across the world with hits in the pop charts and beyond.

Here is a selection of our current favourite Hispanic artists to add to your music radar.

C.Tangana

C. Tangana, previously known as Crema, has been marking Spanish music since 2006 with his hybrid take on Spanish melodies and culture. The Madrid born and raised artist presents us with his romantic affinity with music through the combination of his passion for Spanish folklore and modern rap. The result of which are incredible songs like ‘Tú me dejaste de querer’ and ‘Nunca estoy’ that have transported his fame to the international scene.

His forthcoming album ‘El Madrileño’, about to be released on the 26th of February, will continue to nourish C.Tangana’s artistic evolution. His music, visuals and narrative, will continue to honour the heritage of Spanish music through the surprising collaborations with artists that, like him, have had a strong impact on the history of Hispanic music. Artists like Andres Calamaro and the Gypsy Kings will help him create new and contrasting sounds born through the appreciation of traditional ones.

This upcoming project will undoubtedly showcase C.Tangana’s talent and maybe even beat his own record of best debut in Spanish history with ‘Tú me dejaste de querer’ and 1.6 million Spotify views in only 24hours.

Kablito

Kablito, aka Karen Freire, is an Ecuadorian artist now residing in Los Angeles that made it to our music radar with her smooth R&B sounds and relatable lyricism.

As she explains her music is a contemporary mix of inspiration gathered from all her favourite R&B artists from Prince to Jack Swing, and her musical take of South American culture and its distinct elements like drama soap operas.

It’s not a common combination nor source of inspiration for a musician but it is one that is worth our time. With her EP Telenovela and multiple hits such as “Vete de Aquí” and “Yo Nunca Te Quise” Kablito entered an industry (the Latinx music industry) that was often considered only for its traditional dancing hits and recentred the international listeners’ attention to the contemporary music that enriches it.

She’s an urban voice representing change and becoming her own representative figure in the music industry with evolving sounds and incredible collaborations.

Bad Bunny

If you don’t know Bad Bunny by now you’re not listening to the right music…But, if you’re like us and love him and everything he does we’re here to talk about him once again.

The Puerto Rican artist known due to his eccentric take on Latin music, genre versatility and joyful personality is one of the key figures in the revitalisation and appreciation of modern Latin music. Not only he creates songs that immediately boost your mood and make you want to forget about everything else, like “Dàkiti”, but he also challenges everything that is outdated and embraces change and innovation, as done in the music video of “Yo perreo sola” by becoming his own muse.

His latest and unexpected album “El Último Tour del Mundo” demonstrated the different sides of Bad Bunny’s music; his ability to work on any genre and come up with diverse songs that always represent his artistic essence. The music video for one of our favourite songs of the album, ‘La Noche de Anoche’ featuring Rosalía has just been released, it’s a visual serenade that lets us appreciate the chemistry of these two artists accompanied by the complexity of their lyrics and beautiful imagery.

Sebastian Cortes

Sebastián Cortés is making his way into the world of music as a singer, composer and producer. Focused on creating something different that expands the possibilities of niche-music and artists in the Spanish scene.

The Madrid born and raised artist has crafted a style of his own, which fits in with Lofi-pop and Indie sounds that resonate with us as an audience due to the quality of his unprecedented style and the catch of his lyricism.

It’s not a further extension of commercial pop or another standardised version of indie music, it’s something more. His raw voice, meaningful stories and even laid-back production provide us with a genuine alternative to Spanish pop and allows us to sit back and enjoy Sebastián Cortés hit songs like “Dos x Tres” and “T la sudo”.

He may not be the most mainstream of artists but his releases have reached a wide audience exceeding 100,000 listeners on Spotify across different genres, and all by his merit without the support of any label but due to his art. We believe he is an artist to keep up with and cannot wait to see what he has in store for us and the Hispanic music landscape.

Nathy Peluso

Nathy Peluso, an artist criticised for her daring approach to music but loved by us for it.

The Argentinian artist has carved her path in the Latinx music industry by breaking boundaries and exploring musical aspects that many have been afraid to do until now.

We became familiar with her work back in 2017 following the release of her hit single ‘Corashe’ and have been keeping up with her incredible trajectory ever since. Her music has everything that we, Voir, love; upbeat sounds, strong lyrics, impactful voice and eccentric style. Something that we had the chance to admire even more in her third album “Calambre” with songs such as “Buenos Aires” and “Delito”. The latter which has just taken a visual form with the recent release of its official music video and gained international recognition by artists such as Cardi B.

Yendry

YENDRY is a Dominican-born singer who uses her music as a mirror to reflect the realities she faced while travelling the world and adapting to two different cultures.

We came across YENDRY’s work in her performance for the COLORS show but her career took off much earlier, the 27 years singer and songwriter gained popularity in 2012 after participating in the Italian X-Factor. The participation in the Italian talent show became acclaimed due to her strong vocals and particular musical choices which were further appreciated in 2014 when she became the leading voice of Materianera and was part of their first EP “Supernova”.

YENDRY’s music evolved with the years and so did our appreciation of it. Her hit singles “Barrio” and “Nena” are the ones that caught our attention, these, to us, are the ones that encompass her path into finding her niche and that represent her will to include and represent her roots and culture through her music.

As you will be able to appreciate when listening to her different releases the young artist doesn’t solely sing in Spanish but tries to communicate her message and style using the combination of various languages, therefore creating a particular characteristic in her craft.

A characteristic that also translates into her influences, taking equal inspiration from Bachata to R&B and including her favourite elements of both to create her trail.

Louta

Louta cannot be described exclusively as a singer. The young Argentinian artist is a singer, songwriter, performer and music producer… but most importantly his artist that likes to communicate with this audience, he’s a stage bug and many call him.

Louta doesn’t just perform his music, he makes an artistic proposition out of his songs, one that his viewers are obliged to listen to and take the time to interact with. His songs are a dialogue with the public that goes beyond the entertaining role of music, they’re a discussion accompanied by innovative music.

Why innovative you may ask… Louta is a multifaceted artist that has succeeded in incorporating diverse genres into his projects, from electronic music to traditional cumbia and many more. But this music as catchy as it is by itself is always presented alongside a specific choice of visuals and shows that surpass our acoustic expectations.

He’s not the most known artist in the Hispanic music industry, however, he’s one that will change your perception of Latin music and will make you fall in love with his intimate songs like “Media hora” and the more chaotic ones like “Alto visto”.

Manuel Medrano

Romanticism in soothing Latin pop, this is how we would describe Manuel Medrano’s music to the ones that aren’t familiar with it. The Colombian singer and songwriter has built himself an impressive career following the classic and rather traditional beauty of Latin pop music.

His most popular songs, that also happen to be our favourite ones too, “Bajo el agua”, “Si pudiera”, and “Una y otra vez” have attracted over 4.5 monthly million listeners over the world on platforms such as Spotify. The simplicity in his music is what makes it so pleasant, his laid-back approach allows us to directly focus on his incredible vocal talent and minimal acoustic sounds, letting the music speak for itself.

Unlike other Latin artists of the moment that try to include as many elements as possible in their projects Manuel Medrano’s style relies on the quality of his sounds and the impact of his voice. Something that is becoming underappreciated nowadays but that is always captivating to see, especially by a renown artist like him.

Rosalía, the singer who transformed the sound of Spanish music throughout the world. The acclaimed artist who has now become a sought-after collaborator in the music industry has brought to light her passion for Flamenco in the incorporation of contemporary pop music.

We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t appreciate Rosalía’s talent or straight up isn’t obsessing over he music, and fairly so. The Catalan singer owns her originality in every sense, she presented to the world one of the most traditional aspects of Spanish culture in everything but a traditional way. This originality is centred in her music, through the never-ending reinvention of current sounds and visual stimuli she became one of our favourite personalities in the global music industry.

It is no wonder why so many artists have opted to collaborate with the Catalan singer, from Bad Bunny to James Blake, proving the reach of her sounds to every imaginable audience from every part of the world. Check out one of our favourite projects of hers below.

In a project first announced in March of 2019, by a tweet from Rosalia, the two immense talents find a dark, dreamy soundscape that compliments both artists’ style and brand while pushing both outside of their comfort zones.

The song is mostly performed in Spanish, but effortlessly drifts to English, and understanding the melancholic message of the song doesn’t require knowledge of either language, although the last line, sung by Eilish, leaves a cold and sombre impression (“If I wasn’t important then why did you waste all your poison”).

With barely any accompaniment, other than a few synths that heighten the dark and eerie tone, the harmonic winding of the two outstanding voices creates an ethereal siren song. The music video reflects this, as director Nabil places the two in darkness as the cameras pan around each singer, getting faster and more disorienting as the song escalates. It’s hypnotic and phantasmal, matching the energy of the track. The video’s styling also deserves recognition, as Billie and Rosalia sport elaborate glass manicures created by nail artist Sojin Oh, that add to the video’s dreamlike feel.

The track is featured on a new episode of the iconic HBO drama Euphoria that came out yesterday, ‘Part 2: Jules’, and fits the show well with it’s airy and celestial sound, dripped in sadness.

Jennifer Lopez’s latest music video for her song ‘In The Morning’ is a scene of pure ethereal mysticism. The multi-talented star has raised the bar for music video aesthetics and her glamourous costumes are no different, with an array of fantastical outfits floating between a futuristic mermaid and a bare-skinned angel.

Two of J-LO’s long time standing fashion stylists; Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi (@Marielhaenn, @Robzangardi) had a large role in the execution of Lopez’ high fashion in the music video, with an array of pictures being posted on the stylists’ Instagram pages depicting the BTS of the video and the technicalities that were involved with the outfits.

The beginning of the video illustrates mid-air floating J-LO enveloped in a sheer ombre gown, by Dutch couture designer Iris Van Herpen. The colours of the dress are beautifully illuminated by the stage lighting that gives the effect of J-LO surrounded by a celestial light.

Other looks in the video featured a chromatic silver tin foil top and skirt drape co-ord by a collaborative effort between Graham Cruz and Lever Couture, as well as a white figure tight ‘mummified’ gown that oozed glamour, by Marco Marco.

In addition to this, we see J-LO envisioned as an angel fallen from the Heavens with gigantic, feathered angel wings, complemented with her bare skin. This stripped-back look paid homage to both J-LO’s infamous curves as well as a reference to a shoot she did with fashion photographer Tony Turan back in 1999.

Saving the best to last, the final fashion scene that blesses our eyes is the several foot high Valentino feathered coat designed by the fashion house’ creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, accompanied by a crystal clad cage mask by Peruvian designer Marianna Harutunian which left the music mogul sparkling.

The out-of-this-world aesthetic conveyed in the ‘In The Morning’ video is described by J-LO on her official Instagram page as “full of symbolism about a dark one-sided relationship and the realization that you can’t change anyone else… you can only change yourself,”. The lyrics to the song have an element of relatability and familiarity to so many who have experienced the life lessons of heartbreak and self-love, which J-LO further pays homage to on her Instagram with the encouraging words to “Grow your own wings and walk away from anyone or anything that doesn’t truly value all you have to offer”

It’s only the second week of 2021 and already we’ve had a number of memorable music videos released by some top artists. Setting the standard high for the rest of the month, and for the rest of the year, could these tracks and iconic music videos just be a taste of what’s to come for great music this year?

1. Lana Del Rey – Chemtrails Over The Country Club

Ahead of her new album releasing March 19th, Lana Del Rey shared the music video for her title track, ‘Chemtrails Over The Country Club’ on January 11th. The video starts off very Del Rey – lace and pearl adorned and Gatsby-esque, showing a large house, a little red sports car and a pool scene, all shot somewhere between 1920 and 2020, brought up to covid times by the mesh diamante mask that caused her criticism last year. The music video then takes a darker turn as the song slows and the scene changes to dark shadows, wolves and vampires, and the same little red sports car now on fire. The video’s dark and fantastical last two minutes have us all wondering about the theme and concept of the upcoming album, we can’t wait to hear and see more.

2. Bree Runway – ATM (Ft. Missy Elliott)

Bree Runway returns with another iconic video for her 2020 album 2000AND4EVA, this one featuring an appearance from the one and only Missy Elliott, who features on the track, costume changes and all. When released, the visuals were described as ‘the 1950s meets ‘2000AND4EVA’: a celebration of women, black beauty and luxury living, [with] the final frame an homage to the iconic Grace Jones’, and it conforms to this statement entirely sporting cabaret scenes, diamond-studded performance and ATMs galore.

3. Harry Styles – Treat People WIth Kindness

Styles brought us joy with the visual for his topically titled song ‘Treat People With Kindness’. Spoiling the internet with his (pretty impressive) dance moves and a feature from Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) – his dance partner in the video – we couldn’t have asked for more as a positive start to the year. The cheerful, black-and-white clip will surely be on everyone’s mind for a while to come, due to the rare and wonderful sight of Harry Styles dancing and the delightful optimism of the track.

4. Saweetie – Best Friend (Ft. Doja Cat)

Saweetie’s latest video served us fashion and feminism with Doja Cat in the passenger seat. The video for her single ‘Best Friend’ starts with a telepathic conversation about fake woke men (“B*tch please that kind of crass virtue signalling is nothing but a less overtly nefarious form of toxic masculinity”- Doja Cat) and shows the pair having fun in the strip club, jail, a hotel lobby and a bedazzled Tesla. Styled by Bryon Javar, Doja and Saweetie wear Dapper Dan for Gucci head to toe, making ‘Best Friend’ an iconic fashion moment as well as a girl anthem. As the title of the upcoming album says best, this is indeed Pretty B*tch Music.

5. Justin Bieber – Anyone

Justin Bieber kicked off 2021 with a new single and music video, both released on New Year’s Day. In this video, clearly inspired by the film Rocky, Justin trades in his tattoos and plays an old-fashioned boxer, training and fighting for a living. It’s a dramatic video, mostly focusing on the boxer and his love interest, played by Zoey Deutch (Why Him?, Set It Up), as Bieber sings about the only one he’ll ever love over the retro-hued beach and boxing scenes. Bieber released the single and video with fans in mind, describing the song as a ‘hopeful anthemic song’ that ‘sets the tone for a brighter new year full of hope and possibility’.
