This is the first time a supermodel will be the subject of a V&A retrospective, but that title seems to fall short – historical icon fits Campbell better. She’s expanded from fashion to philanthropy, film production, activism, and art direction, which are all set to be included. We’ll see a different side of picture-perfect Naomi, one that joined the Black Girls Coalition in 1989, campaigns for more diversity on the catwalk, and was heavily inspired by Nelson Mandela.

Retrospective is just as small a label as Supermodel; the mononymous icon still makes headlines with her style, is a runway regular, and just designed a collection for Pretty Little Thing.

With ‘Naomi’, 100 carefully curated looks and a photography installation will take us on a journey through her closet— and fashion history. The garments featured are from Campbell’s personal collection and archive pieces loaned by designers. The exhibition will see an unprecedented close involvement from the subject herself, who said she’s “honoured to be asked by the V&A to share my life in clothes with the world”.

Curator Sonnet Stanfill has said that this overwhelmingly extensive collection is not the main challenge, but rather that they could be adding looks right “up until the day before the exhibition”. But even some stars shine brighter than others, and the looks below? They’re sure to be included. after all, they’re as close to the sun as fashion moments get.

1993

This lilac Chanel suit she wore on the October 1993 runway is one of the only looks confirmed by the V&A. The exhibition will follow the current retrospective dedicated to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, so this proves to be a seamless transition.

2019

Her 2019 Met Gala dress by Valentino is the second confirmed look, which makes sense given that it’s the same year Campbell won the Fashion Icon of the Year Award.

1991

The exhibition will give us an insider look at her life, as told from Naomi’s voice. With this deeply personal nature, we expect to see plenty of Azzedine Alaïa, whom she called Papa and had a father-daughter relationship with. This mesh leopard catsuit with ruffle cuffs from Autumn/Winter 1991 was one of her most iconic runway moments; signature smirk included.

1991

A Versace look from the Versace muse will undoubtedly make an appearance. Not only was designer Gianni Versace a dear friend of Naomi but also the creator of the supermodel status. In this spring/summer 1991 dress, she delivered the soon-to-be signature strut that made her one of the 90s original supermodels alongside the likes of Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford. The Big Five remain just as historically significant as they were in their heyday too: Apple TV+ just released a documentary about them, Vogue reunited the girl group for this year’s September issue, and they closed the Vogue World London event hand-in-hand.

1999

One of the most iconic duos of the 90s, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell’s friendship reigned the decade while becoming the faces of a generation. They loved partying, champagne, and shimmering Versace dresses (‘wagons’ are their self-assigned nicknames for each other because it means drunk in Irish), so this look from the brand’s Diamonds are Forever event will hopefully be included. The mini dress shows off Campbell’s fashion prowess, with her wearing the sparkly butterflies before it became a Y2K trend.

1993

The supermodel’s fall in 12-inch platforms during the Vivienne Westwood 1993 show is one of the most defining moments of her career. Naomi’s self-deprecating smile post-stumble grazed the cover of magazines for weeks after, and the flounce of the boa right after was what enamored the world with her. The supermodel has confessed that some designers even ask her to recreate the fall. In an interview with Westwood, she said: “A couple of people, designers, asked me if I would fall for them. And I was like, ‘Why would you want me to fall unnecessarily?!’ ‘Press! The press that you got!’ But it wasn’t planned!”.

1997

Attending the 1997 MTV Music Video Awards, Naomi wore ’The Paris Hilton Dress’ years before the hotel heiress ever did. This sparkly mini dress belongs to her personal Versace collection, a keepsake that for her represents a fond memory, but for the world? It’s fashion history. Alongside this getup, curator Stanfill has confirmed we should expect a myriad of dresses, including designs from Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Karl Lagerfeld, and Virgil Abloh.

1998

In head-to-toe Louis Vuitton, this look shows the more casual style of Naomi (barring the private jet in the background) as she arrived in Paris for the season. From the sunglasses to the massive logomania bags, this look oozes 90s.

1995

Another one of the most significant moments from her runway career, Naomi showcased her feral energy for Thierry Mugler’s autumn/winter 1995 show. This wasn’t just a walk through an elevated platform, it was a performance that showed the difference between model and supermodel.

2023

In her most recent runway moment (for now), Campbell closed Sarah Burton’s last show for Alexander McQueen during the Spring Summer 2024 season in Paris. A longtime collaborator of the brand and dear friend of Burton, this proved to be an emotional moment for not only her but the fashion industry as a whole.

In March 2023, H&M and Mugler shared a music video featuring musicians Amaarae, Shygirl, Eartheater, and Arca performing a remixed version of the 1998 hit song ‘Music Sounds Better With You’, commissioned especially for the collaboration. The original song, by French band Stardust, has been reworked to match the high-energy video, flicking through scenes of models walking through walls, a talk show scene with Casey Cadwallader, the brands’ logos on the Empire State Building, and the singers performing to a filled stadium. This also gave fans the first real look at the collection, with models wearing tailored suits, corsets, cut-out tops, catsuits, star jewellery, mesh trousers, tights, and glitter.

We got to see the collection on supermodels and Mugler muses on Wednesday night, as over 800 guests gathered at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC for the collaboration party. There was music, performance, and, of course, fashion to celebrate the launch of the new collection. Celebrities who had featured in Mugler lookbooks and campaigns made appearances dressed head-to-toe in H&M x Mugler, with the overall aesthetic consisting of a lot of black, satin, and mesh, with silver rhinestone and star details. 

There were individual musical performances from the stars of the music video before they came together to perform the signature song ‘Music Sounds Better With You’. 

There was also a catwalk show featuring models like Paloma Elsesser, Irina Shayk, and Eva Herzivoga, while dancers performed in embellished catsuits. The afterparty featured multiple DJ sets and was a nod to the Mugler house, celebrating dance and club culture. “It was the ideal celebration of the Mugler H&M collection and the perfect way to welcome people into our world— an unforgettable night built around freedom, personal expression, and liberating, bold fashion,” Casey Cadwallader said after the event. 

This is not the first time H&M has done something like this. Previously, the Scandinavian brand has collaborated with Simone Rocha, Giambattista Valli, Moschino, and Erdem, always selling out. A core aspect of these collabs are the elaborate launch parties, like the 2015 Balmain party with a catwalk show, a performance from the Backstreet Boys, and celebrities like Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss, and Gigi Hadid in attendance.

The video celebrates all things theatrical. The inclusive cast partake in various activities; from modelling to singing, they even take over a talk show. One thing we are particularly grateful for is that the campaign allows us a second look at Arca’s iconic modelling that took over our Instagram feeds at the Mugler show back in January.

Despite being a H&M launch, the collection is instantly recognisable as Mugler. The promotional videos and images show various looks, from jumpsuits to tops that feature Mugler’s distinct, bold, and futuristic designs. They play with sheer mesh, a Mugler trademark, which compliments a lot of the more structured pieces. There are also looks that play with cut-outs and crossover details that really emphasise the influences that Mugler have had over the campaign.

While the majority of the collection appears to be quite dark, we do get a snapshot at some more vibrant colours. From cobalt blue dresses to neon green suits, some of Mugler’s signature colours have shone through. Many in the form of perfect party looks for the summer.

The collection also appears to have a lot of fun with denim. The various black panelled jeans provide a more unique take on denim, something that is a set trend for this season. The collection also appears to accommodate for the double-denim trend that is taking the fashion world by storm as we see hints at a denim jean and jacket co-ord. 

Our stand-out piece from the collection has to be the black jumpsuit worn by Arca. The mesh panelling and strategic design is pure Mugler and could be styled in so many ways. Whether you wear it as a catsuit, or layer items with it to break the look up, the look is beautiful as it is but also hold so much potential for styling. And, we must say, nothing screams Mugler quite like a catsuit. 

The collection will be available online and in select stores from the 11^th of May 2023 and we cannot wait to see what the full collection has in store for us.

A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music. I hope it inspires you to release the wiggle. The diverse album art shot by Mason Poole and styled by Marni Senofonte and KJ Moody, Beyoncé’s personal stylist, the artist dons Mugler, Schiaparelli, Gucci, Alaïa and Philipp Plein, among other designers proved that Beyoncé really is that girl as she served high-fashion looks fit for a queen. From heavenly get-ups to dangerously sexy fits, here are the top flawless looks that have us crazy in love.

For the album cover, Beyoncé looked like an alien superstar as she slayed on a glistening silver horse wearing barely-there custom Nusi Quero body armour along with long locks and a dark eye look.

Shining bright under a disco ball, the pop icon wore a Gucci Love Parade gown by creative director Alessandro Michele with Wolford’s Individual 10 Stay Ups tights and metallic silver lips.

Beyoncé brought the bold energy in this custom Maison Alaia strapless black knit catsuit with statement fluffy boots.

Looking heavenly in a halo, Queen Bey posed in a golden bodysuit and matching halo by Melissa Simon-Hartman paired with thigh-high Philipp Plein 24k gold boots and a gold statement lip.

Channelling another pop icon Madonna’s cone bra, Beyoncé wore a Haute Couture Schiaparelli black leather moulded bustier along with stockings and statement earrings.

Looking licensed to kill in custom Mugler, Beyoncé wore a silver metal bustier shining under a black gathered dress with silver cuffs, black Jimmy Choo Anouk pointed-toe pumps and a killer beehive.

In this psychedelic shot, Beyoncé posed in a black and white swirl bodysuit with matching earrings, leather gloves and sunglasses.

Spring/Summer 1992

This is a look for the history books. Showcased in 1992 as part of Mugler’s Western collection, this bejewelled cowboy look is an iconic moment for Manfred’s career.

George Michael ‘Too Funky’ Music Video 1992

Manfred worked with a whole host of musical icons during his career, including the late George Michael. This video is filled with supermodels and inventive designs, but, the look that caught everyone’s eyes is Emma Sjoberg’s vibrant western outfit.

Demi Moore Indecent Proposal dress 1993

This dress got everyone talking back in the 90s, with the futuristic cut out detailing accentuating the already steamy nature of this film. The design has since inspired dresses worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian.

1995 Couture

This show was a career defining moment for Manfred, as he celebrated the 20 year anniversary of his brand. He enlisted the help of a diverse group of supermodels to rock his designs, including the venus dress which was then picked up again in 2019 by Cardi B.

After parting ways with the brand ‘Thierry Mugler’ in 2003, Manfred made his comeback with none other than Beyonce in 2009. From here, he started creating designs for other musicians and stage productions.

Beyoncé first collaborated with Manfred for her ‘Sweet Dreams’ music video, in which she wore a corset originally showcased in Fall 1995.

Manfred also went on to create the costumes for Beyoncé’s 2009-2010 world tour, designing some of the outfits she has become most well known for.

Kim Kardashian Met Gala 2019

Love it or hate it, this look caught everyone’s eye back in 2019. Speaking on the look, Kim said

“He envisioned me as this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.” 

Cardi B At The 2019 Grammys

Showing her love to Manfred, Cardi wore three of his past designs during her Grammy appearance back in 2019. This included the iconic Venus dress from Mugler’s 1995 archive.

Thierry Mugler, Couturissme

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts collaborated with Mugler in 2021 to initiate an exhibition which restored Manfred’s heritage couture and ready-to-wear pieces. The opening night was attended by guests such as Cardi B, Irina Shayk and Manfred himself.

To showcase the brand’s upcoming FW21 collection Casey Cadwallader brought an amalgamation of force, femininity, and acrobatics to the runway. Through a futuristically potent film, the collection is bought to life as models, including Amber Valletta and Jill Kortleve, can be seen to be thrown around, falling into, and shadowed, by figures masked in white, drawing all attention to the designs themselves. Bella Hadid also stars in the film, styled in a combination of strong and sexy pieces which effectively convey the message of the brand.

The collection unveiled ultimate power looks through a contrast of black colour blocking with bursts of neon, mesh detailing, and the brand’s illustrious structured garments, embellished with gold draping chains which elegantly hung to compliment and accentuate the female form in all its glory.

A sense of supremacy is enforced throughout the exhibit by dominating strides, intense stares and bold postures, highlighted in the film by the effects of slow-motion, zoom, and strobe lighting. Mugler FW21 is a collection for the modern woman, in celebration of power dressing.

If athleisure characterized 2020, in 2021 we’re all about bringing glamour back. Forget those times when looking good was all about being the most uncomfortable: this year, we’ve mastered the perfect balance between comfort and sophistication, and celebrities are the proof.

There are many in 2020 that made a fortune from sportswear, such as Kim Kardashian that recently became made a new entry on the Forbes billionaire list, thanks to its peak in sales with Skims, her shapewear brand. With the pandemic, our need to buy clothes has reduced as a result of not having events to go to, but not everyone feels this way. There are many that have been shopping more than ever, and this is because studies show that boredom leads to impulsivity, and therefore we might’ve been making more online purchases than before – for things we didn’t really need. Others, instead, have found the quietness of lockdown the perfect occasion to enforce a glow-up, both in terms of style and appearance. Casually, shapewear had been the most unexpected category to be trending last year, as a result of our shift in needs (but also because of the Kim K effect), and high fashion brands have soon jumped on the bandwagon.

It is not just Kim to have profited from this sudden change in our consumeristic behaviour, but also other historic pioneers in the industry such as the iconic brands Mugler and Alexander McQueen. This season has been characterized by a more explicit and prominent depiction of sensuality, born from the desire to escape to new realities. Lingerie has become outerwear, and brands have been redefining etiquettes within the industry together with consumers, more closely than ever. The definition of inclusivity has also been explored further in latest shows from SS21 and AW21. On the Mugler catwalk we’ve truly seen people from all sides of the spectrum, and this is reflected in the brand’s ingeniousness to be defined by body positivity and self-love, amongst its values.

It appears that sexy is back, from lingerie to corsets, and shapewear is no exception. From new streamlined silhouettes to the exploration of BDSM inspired materials and cuts in high fashion, this season it appears that sexiness is back, and shapewear is no exception, despite its long, discomforting and tumultuous history of the garment From Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa, to Madison Beer, Bella Hadid and even Billie Eilish in her latest British Vogue Cover (June 2021), the reintroduction of this provoking and deeply evocative style is ubiquitously popularised, and we’re all watching.

Mugler has returned to amaze us once again. The French Maison presented the second part of the Spring/Summer 2021 collection via a virtual show that mixes futuristic fashion (and sounds), structural simplism, and the adoration of the female form.

The virtual show was unveiled on the 31st of March in the form of a seven-minute film with the participation of some of the most influential personalities in the world of fashion and entertainment, from supermodel Bella Hadid to actress Hunter Schafer.

The film made by Torso studio presented an unusual catwalk characterized by darkness and motion. A motion shown in reverse, with the likes of Dominique Jackson, Soo Joo Park and Irina Shayk walking, strutting and dancing as if shown under an almost invincible light, allows us to imagine them as heroines but with intricate bodysuits, technical cut-out tops and transparent fabrics instead of capes.

The illusory and semi-sinister visuals that as explained by the Maison’s creative director, Casey Cadwaller, aimed to transmit a ‘David Lynchian’ aesthetic captured the label’s infamous DNA by showcasing distinctive looks and a reimagined elegance. But as much as we love the designs with their revealing silhouettes, sexy cut-outs and play of fabrics, it is the way in which these were presented that left us in awe of not only the attire but the creative direction.

By creating an atmosphere centred around freedom and expression, Mugler allowed its models to be seen and noticed as individuals rather than strictly as mannequins. Matching the importance given to the clothes worn to the women wearing them, and not solely due to their bodies but their personalities perceived through their facial expressions, laughs and imminent movements. Mugler’s SS21 Part 02 is a vision of female empowerment, one that leaves us in need of the glamorous pieces of this collection and the daring attitude of its models.
