Exploring Thierry Mugler’s Everlasting Impact On Fashion

Hearing the news of Thierry Mugler’s passing on Sunday, January 23rd was a shocking and heartbreaking moment for lovers of fashion. With iconic looks spanning over 40 years, it’s safe to say Thierry has left his own, unique mark on the fashion world. From runways to collaborating with some of the biggest names in the music industry, we wanted to look back at some of his most legendary moments to honour his life and everlasting impact on fashion.

Spring/Summer 1985

Ahead of his time, Manfred gave off Cleopatra vibes with this metallic colour palette and sharp silhouette.

Fall 1990 Couture

Rocked by supermodel Cindy Crawford, this black embellished bodysuit is a great glimpse into Mugler’s designs. Futuristic, feminine and fierce.

Spring/Summer 1992

This is a look for the history books. Showcased in 1992 as part of Mugler’s Western collection, this bejewelled cowboy look is an iconic moment for Manfred’s career.

George Michael ‘Too Funky’ Music Video 1992

Manfred worked with a whole host of musical icons during his career, including the late George Michael. This video is filled with supermodels and inventive designs, but, the look that caught everyone’s eyes is Emma Sjoberg’s vibrant western outfit.

Demi Moore Indecent Proposal dress 1993

This dress got everyone talking back in the 90s, with the futuristic cut out detailing accentuating the already steamy nature of this film. The design has since inspired dresses worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian.

1995 Couture

This show was a career defining moment for Manfred, as he celebrated the 20 year anniversary of his brand. He enlisted the help of a diverse group of supermodels to rock his designs, including the venus dress which was then picked up again in 2019 by Cardi B.

After parting ways with the brand ‘Thierry Mugler’ in 2003, Manfred made his comeback with none other than Beyonce in 2009. From here, he started creating designs for other musicians and stage productions.

Beyonce Sweet Dreams video 2009

Beyoncé first collaborated with Manfred for her ‘Sweet Dreams’ music video, in which she wore a corset originally showcased in Fall 1995.

Beyoncé I Am Sasha Fierce World Tour

Manfred also went on to create the costumes for Beyoncé’s 2009-2010 world tour, designing some of the outfits she has become most well known for.

Kim Kardashian Met Gala 2019

Love it or hate it, this look caught everyone’s eye back in 2019. Speaking on the look, Kim said

“He envisioned me as this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.” 

Cardi B At The 2019 Grammys

Showing her love to Manfred, Cardi wore three of his past designs during her Grammy appearance back in 2019. This included the iconic Venus dress from Mugler’s 1995 archive.

Thierry Mugler, Couturissme

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts collaborated with Mugler in 2021 to initiate an exhibition which restored Manfred’s heritage couture and ready-to-wear pieces. The opening night was attended by guests such as Cardi B, Irina Shayk and Manfred himself.
