Antonio Marras invited us to his fairy tale, as the show began with a theatrical performance of an Italian romantic story, starring Filippo Timi and Anna Della Rosa, who wore impressive, patterned garments themselves. With an ivy-covered bower as the central scenery prop, the show included sensual, mesh, flowery dresses and breathtaking, theatrical, fuzzy jackets, mantles, and accessories. The governing idea behind many full-length dresses and mantles was to combine heavily patterned fabrics to create an original, mesmerising whole.

Marco Rambaldi

Flowery patterns on mesh dresses, varied combinations of textures, and playing with forms and fabrics were also the main ideas of Marco Rambaldi’s new collection “Memento Amori FW24.” Have a look at this playful pistachio dress with bikini-shaped ornaments, a set composed of a mesh top, vegan leather pencil skirt, and velvet patterned jacket, or a half-transparent, turquoise, crochet dress with a silver, silk tie, long black socks, and a comfy zip hoodie. In this mixture of wool, leather, mesh, and velvet, Rambaldi maintained a romantic vibe of his comfy, yet elegant and sensual looks.

Sarawong

Ethereal, magnetic, nymph-like – these words best describe the collection “Blossoms Sand,” presented in Milan by SARAWONG. From full-length flowery dresses to a vegan leather jacket paired with a sequined skirt, SARAWONG combined sensuality and elegance with a magical touch. Look at the hypnotising facial expressions and vivid makeup of the models wearing delicate ecru velvet dresses or transparent white lace skirts – not forgetting about the massive, fuzzy hats, following the trend of fluffy fabrics and oversized, almost theatrical garments that we get to see in multiple shows.

Diesel

Diesel offered a more industrial, alien, and cosmic vibe than the other shows – but remained very sensual at the same time. There the patchwork got even more intense, and the fabrics even fluffier and heavier. The show was surely one to be remembered, with models wearing (fake) fur jackets, ripped flowery full-length dresses, patchwork jeans, and lion-like headscarves, walking with 1000 online viewers’ faces in the background. Diesel’s Creative Director, Glenn Martens, arranged this unusual show scenery, “creating a live mega-voyeur experience for everyone”. What added even more to the originality of the show was the avant-garde makeup and coloured contact lenses, creating an alien-like atmosphere. And maybe this time the show wasn’t about romantic fairy tales and nymphs, but it was still otherworldly and sensual – just a little bit edgier, and with a dose of industrial, cosmic vibes.

February 22nd proved that the 20th century still has much to offer to contemporary designers, inspiring them to rework the old forms. Day 2 of Milan Fashion Week brought 70s-like, oversized suits and jackets with padded shoulders, classy trenches, forever young turtlenecks and vests, all in basic colour palettes – black, white, grey, beige, and navy. However, the shows weren’t a mere tribute to the old days – the traditional forms of garments were experimented with, and bright and neon colours also found their way onto the runway. 

Calcaterra

Basing the collection “Materia” on considerably oversized, grey and brown suits and classic looks, Calcaterra experimented with the outfits, going for unconventional necklines, asymmetry, and artistic, flowery embellishments put on shoes and trenches, which gave them a fresh, avant-garde look. The traditional suits you’d normally wear to the office got a haute couture touch, thanks to the layers of silky fabrics, slit skirts and blouses. Trenches got gigantic pockets, and two-part, folded bags completed the outfits.

MM6 Maison Marigela

MM6 Maison Margiela also opted for 70s-inspired sets of big trenches, smart turtlenecks and avant-garde bags (see the triangular red one!). Vests got prolonged, padded-shoulders jackets got a black, silk edging trim, paired with ripped green jeans, and the classic 70s suits looked like coming straight from a colourfest. Elegant, long black coats were turned into vests, completed by black, massive leather boots.

Moschino

Moschino’s debuting creative director Adrian Appiolaza offered a deconstruction of classic, old-school office looks, with models wearing shirts made into dresses, cotton boxer shorts, and carelessly worn ties in the show “Collezione 0.” Next to smart, black coats, there were paper boat hats and lingerie-inspired skirts. Good, old baggy jeans and comfy sweaters got a fresh look thanks to maxi ruffle skirts in red and pink.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford’s show, directed by Peter Hawkings, was a celebration of the 70s iconic style at its fullest, with models looking like Hollywood divas from the era, wearing beige furs, golden sequined dresses, belted trousers, and brown square sunglasses. Ford experimented with classy maxi dresses, making them purple and transparent or glittering from top to bottom. The elegant, tailored suits were presented in velvet and satin, while the reinvented all-leather looks included skinny jumpsuits and crocodile-like, beige sets. Turtlenecks were both in modern, transparent mesh jumpsuits and as part of classic outfits with navy, gold-buttoned pea coats.

GCDS

The show by GCDS was the most extravagant composition of the old and the new, titled “Toys For Adults.” The Creative Director, Giuliano Calza, prepared classy leather sets and elegant white suits on the one side, and red fuzzy dresses, Hello Kitty bras, Polly Pocket, and Chucky accessories on the other, which were to help us rediscover our inner children: “beautiful kids, broken inside, tormented by expectations, suddenly forgot how to play. Gcds is a dream, is creation, but we all live with current demons in burgundy times,” explains Calza. And so, smart, padded-shoulders jackets were ornamented with huge roses, velvet evening dresses were accompanied by edgy Hello Kitty bras, and white suits followed sensual lingerie mesh sets.

Gigi Hadid’s Bridal Look for SS19

One of the most iconic moments of Jeremy Scott’s career at Moschino has to be the SS19 show. The show began with a phone call from the one and only Gigi Hadid who warned Scott that he was late for the SS19 runway, Jeremy then declared that all he had for this collection were some sketches, a designer’s worst nightmare. Despite the implied chaos, Gigi Hadid closed the show in an impeccable bridal look with a train of butterflies following her down the catwalk. This was a moment that stopped everybody in their tracks, it was all anyone was talking about, and looking back on it now, we remember why.

He Predicted Midsommar for SS18

Jeremy Scott’s SS18 collection for Moschino was ahead of its time. You might be wondering how this collection was predicting the future, but if you look at the last few looks from the show some of the looks may remind you of a certain dress worn by Florence Pugh in 2019’s Midsommar. The moment that Dani is crowned the May Queen and is veiled in a gown of flowers has been recognised within pop-culture as one of the most iconic fashion moments in film (and that it was). Celebrities such as Ariana Grande and Halsey even entered into a bidding war over the gown. And while the Moschino looks were not the same as Pugh’s elaborate gown, the they definitely shared Midsommar’s floral influences. Spekaing of Moschino and the film industry, this collection was also home to Zendaya’s iconic butterfly dress that she wore to the premiere for The Greatest Showman.

Moschino or McDonalds for Fall 2014

For their Fall 2014 collection, Moschino shocked us all. Never in a million years would we have guessed that McDonalds would work its way onto the runway, but Jeremy Scott made that happen. Inspired by Franco Moschino’s own satirical outlook on the high-fashion industry Scott incorporated ‘junk’ into this collection, this time through junk food. The red and yellow combination was universally recognisable and the infamous ‘golden arches’ were bent into a heart-shape as a subtle nod to ‘Love Moschino’.

Puppetry for SS21

SS21 saw many shows go digital due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a development within the industry that required a lot of creativity. No-one seemed to jump at this opportunity as much as Jeremy Scott though, who recruited none other than Jim Henson’s Creature Shop to create 30-inch puppets to model his collection. Yes, you read that correctly, 30-inches. This meant that for every look there was a miniature, puppet-sized version ready to be modelled. This moment brought excitement and whimsy in a time of uncertainty and fear as Jeremy Scott did what he does best, made fashion playful again. There was even a puppet version of Scott himself who came out to close the show.

‘Let them eat cake’ for Fall 2020

Inspired by Marie Antoinette, Moschino’s Fall 2020 collection was dramatic, extravagant and over-the-top, but what else would you expect from the 1800s? The Queen of France was the perfect muse for Jeremy Scott who always favours the elaborate in his work, but it also came as an exciting change from Moschino’s former investment in bringing ‘trash’ to the runway, as this time they favoured decadence. The collection was not all bustles and petticoats though, with looks inspired by Marie Antoinette’s most famous quote ‘Let them eat cake’ closing the show.

Moschino Barbie for SS15

 As we previously mentioned, Moschino likes to be ahead of the latest blockbusters, and while Barbie has been consistently famous since 1959, Jeremy Scott was re-imagining Barbie’s look long before Greta Gerwig. In 2014, Moschino based their entire Spring Summer 2015 collection off the character designing a fun campaign that brought dress-up into the world of adults.

With over 50 shows from some of the leading fashion houses in the world, there was definitely a lot to take in but don’t worry, we secured the main designers here. Milan Fashion Week was a moment to remember. 

Diesel

Milan Fashion Week gave us the collaboration that none of us expected: Diesel x Durex. The catwalk took place in front of a mountain of red Durex wrappers and was soundtracked by an intimate playlist in a show that championed sex positivity. 

The collection featured Diesel’s usual edgy denim pieces, but the most impressive by far was the way that the brand put a spin on distressed denim. Rather than the usual rips and tears that form frayed edges and loose strings; Diesel incorporated delicate mesh in a sort-of sheer darning detail. This intricate detail not only elevated the look of ripped jeans, but it also played into the ever-popular push and pull of masculinity and femininity as the aggressive rips created a jarring contrast to the delicate lace mesh. 

Roberto Cavalli

Denim was also a huge part of the Roberto Cavalli show. Cavalli’s history is rooted in denim, the designer began his career by creating Frankenstein-esque creations out of scraps of denim; this history was a central source of inspiration for Fausto Puglisi’s collection.

Alongside denim, the collection featured various looks that were constructed by a collage of leather, adding an edgier element to the otherwise bohemian inspired designs. The brown-looks felt very inspired by a 1970s rocker-chic aesthetic, highlighting the retro influences that were weaved throughout the collection.

The collection also featured a heavy segment dedicated to black lace. This section featured a variety of looks that utilised black lace; everything from feathered catsuits to miniskirts took to the runway. This collection was not only an archival-inspired homage to fashion history, but it also served to prove the sheer versatility of materials and the way that they can be used to produce a vast selection of looks.

Blumarine

Set against the backdrop of a blazing ‘B’ and stony outcrop, Blumarine took us on the journey of Joan of Arc. The metallic tones put a modern spin on the iconography of Joan of Arc’s silver armour and the shearling knee-high boots featured buckles that played with designs of combat boots. Chainmail tops and dresses served to show the versatility of the collection’s muse as the looks transitioned from martyr to party girl. 

This collection took Blumarine’s usual Y2K aesthetic, which often manifested itself in hyper-feminine looks of bubble-gum pink and floral frills, down a much darker route. The grungy collection was fuelled by danger and while still feminine, the looks explored the dynamic between violence, threat, martyrdom, and womanhood.

MM6 Maison Margiela

MM6 pioneered trendy tailoring this Milan Fashion Week. The collection was made up of a variety of tailored pieces, whether they were worn in sets or as individual pieces; layered or minimally styled; deconstructed or classically built; the looks demonstrated the versatility of tailoring. In a collection that emphasised the coolness in wearability, all of the looks were elevated yet rooted in simplicity. 

We have seen many designers stray away from show-stopping, viral designs that the internet devours recently as they favour more wearable designs that can maximise sales. While this may sound like a boring development, MM6 proved that it does not need to be. This collection emphasised the possibilities that exist in our day-to-day wardrobes, an important aspect of the fashion industry that must not be ignored.

Moschino

The Moschino Autumn/Winter 2023 collection was inspired by Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’. The famous melting clocks inspired the drip-like hems of the skirts that graced the catwalk. The fluid looks were paired with distorted patterns that both mimicked Dali’s painting and added to the ‘melted’ look of the clothes.

However, halfway through the show the collection took a punkier turn. The hedgehog-spiked headpieces were worn throughout the show, highlighting the influence of punk styles on the collection, but the clothes truly reflected this theme in the second portion of the catwalk. The elaborate ballgowns and extravagant silhouettes were Westwood-esque, in what many have seen as a tribute to the late designer.

GCDS

GCDS’ latest collection was inspired by the domestic, the looks took a more conservative and grown-up look to past collections by the designer, but that does not mean that the collection was plain or boring in any way. The collection featured a bag inspired by Giuliano Calza’s cat, a piece that highlighted the importance of domestic life within this collection. 

However, the domestic also came out in other forms, particularly the use of safety pins throughout the collection. This highlights not only the process of designing and creating clothes but also how clothes exist within the home. The use of such a mundane yet integral object within the collection perfectly bridged the gap between the high fashion industry and the domestic lives that inspired the looks. 

Cormio

Cormio have successfully jumped on the football bandwagon and used their show to emphasise the feminist roots behind this trend. The venue for the show was a football hall on the outskirts of Milan but, unlike the hyper-masculine world of football, women were allowed to take centre stage in this environment. 

Women in football have been marginalised and underappreciated for years and now femininity is fighting back. Instead of opting for more ‘masculine’ looks to fit in with this atmosphere, Cormio instead forced femininity into this environment, proving that there is a place for ‘girliness’ within football. The Y2K ‘punk princess’ inspired looks highlighted another traditionally masculine environment that has been successfully dominated by women for years. The pieces reclaimed sexist phrases and slurs, injecting an ironic sense of humour into the collection. 

However, our personal highlight from the collection was the hyper-feminisation of the literal football. Cormio turned the instrument of the sport, the thing that the entire game is dependent on, into a handbag in a camp reclamation of the sport. 

Sunnei

Never before have we seen a horizontal catwalk. But that is exactly what Sunnei gave us. Models gracefully traversed the traditional catwalk before partaking in an elaborate trust exercise at the end of the runway. After falling into the arms of onlookers the models crowd-surfed to the end of their runway. 

The collection itself prioritised eye-grabbing looks, from patchwork denim to fringed knits, the looks were perfect for the it-girl who wants to stand out. Much like the runway show, the collection was non-traditional but not unwearable, the looks perfected the more out-there elements of contemporary streetstyle. 

Dolce & Gabbana 

After days of online speculation, Kim Kardashian sat front row at the Dolce & Gabbana show this Milan Fashion Week in an archival red two-piece that was a modernised look from the designer’s 1990 collection. Although onlookers were yet to realise it, Kim’s look set the stage for the collection that they were about to see as the Autumn/Winter 2023 ‘Sensuale’ collection was deeply inspired by archival work.

While lingerie-inspired looks are not uncommon on the runway anymore, Dolce & Gabbana were designing these sorts of collections back in the 90s. With this context the lace-heavy underwear-as-outerwear looks that graced the catwalk this season were more historic than you might think. The collection even featured a corset from 1991 and a coat from 1997 as the designer works to bring back some of their iconic pieces.

The accessory trends for this season have swept us off our feet, so here is a lowdown of our favorites that triumphed in the catwalk shows ready to feature in your fall wardrobes!

Every Autumn/Winter sparks that deja vu feeling when our hearts are stolen yet again by a pair of boots, and for this season we cannot resist the revamp of the classic wellie. No longer a boot longing for a muddy country walk, this style is now a highly versatile wardrobe addition suited to almost every daytime look. Prada embraced the trend with pastel shades and a warm lining for the winter, while Bottega Veneta opted for a more statement style with vibrant colour. Versace offered a range of wellie styles: the classic, the popular sock boot, and even a pair with heels!

We are not strangers to thigh high and baggy boots which appeared amidst the collections of Roksanda, Saint Laurent and Balmain. Roksanda’s coordinated approach was one of our favourites offering slouched boots that expanded around the leg and harmonised with the Brand’s voluminous collection.

If you cannot justify that new pair of boots, perhaps a new pair of heels will win your heart. The trends for this season are seeing that nostalgic return to the platform and kitten heel, and a mixture of both the pointed and square toe style. The kitten heel, as seen at Marc Jacobs paired with cute ankle socks, is proving a great option for a more subtle and comfortable look.

Bags form a crucial part of every outfit and are a staple accessory. If this season’s fringe trend caught your eye than an accompanying bag is sure to enhance the ensemble. Rochas shimmery fringed bag will compliment a special evening look, while Bottega Veneta’s oversized clutch with long fringing is a stylish staple. Geometric shaped bags were prominent on the catwalk along with the oversized versus the miniature. Fendi’s gigantic shopper was unmissable while Jacquemus’ miniature bag may have required a second look. Water bottle carriers were also a unique take on bags this season with Chloe, Coach and Marine Serre; a trendy option encouraging healthy hydration and bottle reuse.

A statement accessory never fails to punctuate a confident outfit, and for Autumn/Winter 2020 jewellry is going up a level – and it’s far from subtle. Chunky chains of both silver and gold were seen amongst earrings and necklaces. At Moschino, the chained look was taken further with an unexpected layering of pearls: a daring combination that inexplicably seemed to work!

Proving itself an unrelenting force this season, fringing even worked its way across jewellery; this time with a touch of extravagance that we cannot help but admire. Paco Rabanne is one of our favourites utilizing the look with beautiful headpieces dangling across the face with embellishments of silver and gold. Area similarly opted for an indulgent headpiece, with gleaming silver studs enveloping the head and neck.

For a season that so openly calls for extravagance, why not trade in your woolly winter warmers for a suave opera glove; a standout accessory that entwined its way across the Autumn/Winter collections. At Balmain, longline gloves were paired with striking gowns (think Marilyn Monroe ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ style). Fendi coalesced the trend with more casual attire, as seen with midi skirts and dresses. We love how the opera glove brings that touch of elegance to the season that is sure to brighten up a Winter’s day.

If there’s one industry that has risen, adapted, and responded to society’s newfound digital expectations, it has been that of the fashion industry. Following the footsteps of London Fashion Week Digital in June, yesterday luxury fashion houses took part in day one of Milano Fashion Week Digital to present their Spring/Summer 2021 collections and pre-collections. Amid the complexities and difficulties of the recent lockdown, Italian designers rose to the occasion to present to the world their thoughts and messages during the COVID-19 hardship on the Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana platform.

It may be a new, slightly unorthodox way of storytelling in the fashion industry, but in a moment where social distancing and safety is paramount, it still remains a dynamic event that will forever inspire the next generation of upcoming fashion designers. It was surely an event not to be missed.

MSGM: Non So Dove, Ma Insieme

MSGM was the first to kick things off at the digital Milan Fashion Week with a very ethereal and sensual mini film; embodying the meaning of love and affection, capturing summer nights spent boozing up, partying on the beach, amongst the ones we love the most. Founder and Designer of MSGM, Massimo Giorgetti, divulged the video to celebrate freedom and friendship in the new generation through his clothes.

The designer said: “I wanted to tone down a notch the tone of voice, without losing the intensity and clarity of MSGM codes.” The 2021 women’s wear collection was infused with a feeling of passion and tenderness with plisse skirts, billowy floral dresses, and dreamy ruffles; inspired by a palette of floral hues including lilac, soft pink, and baby blue. The designer wanted to create a sense of ‘escapism and liveliness’ through an approachable collection that juxtaposed a feminine vibe with a tomboyish, casualness to each look.

Magliano Carillon

Migliano Carillon unveiled their SS2021 through an augmented reality feature film, summarising the brands ethos towards futurism and rebellious styling. The video featured eighties aesthetic models slowly turning on a spinning platform to showcase a collection of quirky yet classy apparel, all the while addressing the subject of gender and identity.

Magliano’s collection is hinged on oversized apparel, herculean proportions and vivid colours curated through neon straight-leg pants, a mustard blazer, and a necktie off white shirt. The designer also included a terry-cloth white towel, worn as a midi skirt, paired with an oversized button vest. This latest collection really played on the boundary between masculine and feminine attrite through pieces such as a skin-tight cycling short embellished with lingerie details.

Plan C: Everyone is a Landscape

At 1 pm we were taken on a sensorial journey. Plan C by Carolina Castiglioni presented “Everyone is a landscape” to divulge the inspiration behind her Spring/Summer 2021 collection. Deep-rooted into the brand values ‘edgy design, daring colour sensibility, experimentation and uncompromising quality’ which was reflected in the 360-degree Google Maps inspired collection video.

Directed by Luca De Santis, the film is set in the Swiss Alps, where Carolina unexpectantly spent lockdown, indulged in untouched plains of greenery and deserted mountains. Therefore, her Spring 2021 collection was a sort of ode to her time spent surrounded by natural landscapes. As a testament to her unfound strength she discovered in lockdown, bold, block colours, oversized garments and floral patterns are favoured in her collection through geometric dresses, loose shirts and drawstring trousers.

Valextra: Sailing Through the Times

In a short collaboration video with Ratti, Valextra launched their ‘Women’s Timeless’ collection exhibiting their latest generation of handmade leather bags. Simplistic yet practical has forever been the way forward with Valextra with structured, yet statement miniature bags being the forefront of this SS21 collection. Fuchsia, peach, red and cream front clasped wrist bags present are a timeless and chic fashion statement; that will forever own its rightful place in our summer wardrobe.

Prada Multiple Views Spring / Summer 2021: The Show That Never Happened

Arguably the most awaited unveil of the day, all eyes were on the Italian fashion house as they pushed the digital boundaries to roll out their latest collection. Following the announcement of Raf Simons joining forces with Miuccia Prada, the reveal of their ‘Multiple Views’ collection for Men’s Spring/Summer 2021 was one to watch.

The collection was proposed in five chapters; interpreted by five designers; Terence Nance, Joanna Piotrowska, Martine Syms, Juergen Teller and Willy Vanderperre, who in turn used film to capture differing elements and “Multiple Views” of the Prada collection. Futurism, strength and fragility being the highlighting themes and to celebrate the multiplicity of opinions and viewpoints of the collection.

Speaking of the collections, they strike a balance between corporate and dynamism, classism, and futurism. All designed to resemble minimum through these complex times, the collection features a combination of, simple pieces, and then moves onto sportswear and edge. Looking at menswear, the collection speaks classism with sharp tailor-cut suits, knee-length trench coats and narrow fitted trousers. Then the reverse, introducing industrial fabrics including leather and Perspex.

Womenswear touches on elegance and femininity with satin slip dresses, monochrome sleeveless dresses and lace embellished midi frocks while injecting a sense of ‘girl boss’ through structured blazers and tailored shirt dresses.

Alberta Ferretti: A Tribute to Italy

Named as a ‘Tribute to Italy’, the Alberta Ferretti Resort 2021 collection injected a dose of optimism through a palette of bold, confident colours including fuchsia, bright orange and cherry. Italy being one of the initial countries to go into lockdown, Ferretti wanted to use this collection to bring back spirit and life. Speaking of the collection, she said: “We’re surrounded by beauty. Our empty cities, shrouded in the silence of the lockdown, were magnificent. I wanted to celebrate that.”

Digitally shot in front of famous Italian backdrops; including Venice, Rome and Florence the Resort collection is enriched with femininity to deliver a collection that features both evening wear and quotidian dress. The collection dips into discrete glamour and sexiness with silk blouses, dresses and nightwear embellished in extravagant print and floral work; as well as including a corporate vibe through pink, orange and cobalt blue suit sets.

Vivetta: Il Gioco del Pensiero

Nothing explains this latest collection but sweet and authentic. Vivetta Ponti used the inspiration of nature and wilderness to draw inspiration for her Resort 2021 collection.

Subtle florals, blossom print ruffles, miniskirts and breezy dresses embellished with statement collars and ruffle sleeves are highlighted in this collection.

The micro-floral motifs, used to reflect Ponti’s countryside quarantine, are inspired by blooming flowers and based on a ‘fairy-tale’ colour palette of mint green, white and primrose yellow. A soothing and peaceful collection that was created to balance the worries from the surrounding world.

Edithmarcel: Workout SS21

To display Edithmarcel’s S/S2021 workout collection, we instantly thought of John Travolta and Jaime Lee Curtis sweating and thrusting in ‘Perfect’. Let’s be honest. The launch video was narrated by a motivational 1980’s fitness instructor, cutting out to reveal pieces from the collection. The monochrome geometric face print that is highlighted in the collection is a simplistic yet effective motif and, as versioned by the brand, works towards genderless fashion producing a very wearable and adaptable collection.

Moschino: Spring-Summer 2021 Menswear Pre-Collection

A play on geometric shapes and vivid colours to infuse optimism and joyfulness took centre stage in Moschino’s latest collection. Moschino has forever been known to inject fun and creativity into its brand; well nothing has changed. Bold, bright, vivid and instantly captivating, the SS21 Men’s Pre-Collection is a collection for the daring. As expected, the Italian fashion house has not held back with its striking embellishments including polka, stripe, stars and incorporating an out-of-space theme of planet and spaceship embroidered apparel. This next collection is one to keep an eye out for.

Philipp Plein: Fashion is Dead

To bring day one to a close, Philipp Plein showcased his ‘Fashion is Dead’ fashion week film to present his Men’s Spring Summer 2021 collection. The eerie reflection video captioned in his Instagram ‘Fuck the Virus’ recognised the struggle of 2020 and the major devastation it has had globally. Specifically highlighting the impact on the fashion industry with intense newsreels and a voice-over naming the virus a “disaster for global magnitude.” Slightly apocalyptic feeling, the designer introduces his collection featuring himself as the centre man. Striking a balance between contemporary sportswear and a ‘dressed to kill’ aesthetic.

Bold and statement worthy, the volume trend has marked its territory for the upcoming season. Amongst the numerous trends spotted in the Autumn/Winter 2020 collections, the volumized look has most definitely caught our attention. Who can blame us when this trend screams the classic go big or go home!

Voluminous sleeves

It was only a matter of time before voluminous sleeves returned to the forefront, claiming its place yet again as a stylish go-to. In the Autumn/Winter 2020 show, voluminous sleeves made a strong appearance amongst many of the collections. Roksanda’s orange maxi with oversized ruffle sleeves is one of our favourites along with Richard Quinn’s bulbous sleeved dresses which rock that nostalgic 80’s feel. If you dare for more extravagance, Viktor and Rolfe display a sculptural pink dress that is sure to turn some heads. A bulging sleeve is asymmetrically paired with one of contrasting size, offering a playful approach to volume.

Bubble up

As the colder months approach, this trend offers a practical yet stylish option for the upcoming season. The catwalk featured an array of enveloping garments with outerwear and dresses offering a bubble-like protective layer. This was a strong look in J.W. Anderson’s collection consisting of spherical silhouettes inclusively wrapping around the body. At Halpern, a dress of explosive colour engulfs the wearer, leaving only the front of the legs visible. Marine Serre took the inclusive look even further with black puffy outwear that conceals around the head; practicality at its best.

Exaggerate the Hip

The Autumn/Winter shows saw an extreme exaggeration of the hips; Area and Moschino being two of the houses that utilize the look. To say that Area’s jackets and dresses accentuate from the waist would be an understatement. Area has pushed hip volume to the extreme with a bulging heart shape that protrudes from a nipped waist. Moschino similarly presents an array of long-sleeved dresses that encompass an umbrella effect around the hip. Paired with knee-high boots, we love how Moschino has merged the traditional with a modern 2020 twist.

Ruffled Volume and Tulle

When we think of tulle it is almost impossible for the words ‘puffy’ ‘big’ and ‘Molly Goddard’ not to spring to mind. We can always rely on Goddard to present some extravagant tulle pieces on the catwalk and for Autumn/Winter 2020 they are voluminous and bold yet still retain that delicate quality. A red dress consisting of ruffled tulle expands outwards and is layered over a jumper for a more casual look. We love how Goddard has paired a sense of volume and extravagance with a staple jumper. At Louis Vuitton, ruffles can also be seen amongst skirts and dresses, the sheerness of the fabric lending itself to layering. Ruffled skirts and dresses can be paired with a sheer trouser as seen in Louis Vuitton or with a checked trouser from Molly Goddard, creating a subtle layered look that is versatile for every season. Prepare for a polka dot extravaganza with Moschino’s Resort 2021 collection: bold, uplifting, and incredibly lively as always. Creative Director Jeremy Scott unfolds a collection that paves the way to the next holiday season and it’s looking full of light-hearted spirit.

In 2013 when Jeremy Scott was appointed Creative Director of Moschino, he told Vogue how “[his] main [vision] is about bringing the brand into the now, into the future”, and the Resort 2021 collection captures this perfectly. Scott shares with Vogue how “this time is about finding my way around all the different obstacles, finding creativity and positivity, and trying to keep upbeat about it”. Despite having already started a collection, the plans were changed to adapt to the current circumstances, and what a great turnaround this was. Needed now more than ever, the collection is filled with playful prints and electric colour, and we cannot help but smile.

Head to toe polka dot (yes, even polka heels!) are paired with gold-hoop Moschino earrings to create a statement look. There are flirty minis, classy midis plus, figure-flattering suits, and jackets; we simply love how play meets sophistication. A cute polka dot bag completes the ensemble. Our favourite resembles that familiar biker jacket that we all know and remember. Just big enough for your everyday essentials there is no doubt this bag will be the best friend you take everywhere, on holiday or at home. We suspect this must be a favourite at Moschino too with a print of this bag featuring across several pieces.

Based in Milan, the Italian Flag is an important theme woven throughout the collection. Other symbolic references include; hearts, smiley faces, peace signs and florals. Through a shared love of fashion, Moschino unites the world with a collection that speaks every language, and the iconic T-shirt which states “I don’t speak Italian, but I do speak Moschino” highlights this perfectly. A sketch of this T-shirt was shared on the Brand’s Instagram page in April with the caption “creativity brings us all together” something I am sure we can all agree with.

Even if you are not currently planning that longed-for trip away, I am sure we can all appreciate the optimism that Moschino have infused into the Resort 2021 collection. If you are staying at home, perhaps one of these pieces can be saved for that trip you may have postponed. Besides, when will polka dots and a dash of positivity ever go out of fashion?

Paris fashion week ends on a high with Louis Vuitton closing the runway for the season, and that’s a wrap on all things AW20 fashion and beauty. As promised, New York gave us an effortless glow, London provided eccentricity at its finest, Milan oozed godly classics and Paris wished us bon voyage with sultry tones that stun. What’s evident is that skin and base makeup is absolutely taking the backseat this winter because the only purchases worth making to stay on trend is a precision liquid liner and your trusty dark autumn lip shade.

Here is a roundup of beauty trends to follow for high-end style in your high street setting.

Lining The Eyes

Did we mention that overlooking the crumbly unpredictable kohl and heading straight for the sharp liquid eyeliner is your best bet to achieve geometric greatness? At NYFW, Vera Wang’s gothic eye look was exaggerated and haunting and not alone. Gucci and Moschino are examples of a wide range of designers who used liner prominently on the catwalk. Of course, in Paris Dior made it sweet and sexy focusing on the outer corners to create intensity and draw attention. Makeup artist for the show, Peter Phillips was said to have ‘emphasized the eye taking each model’s personality, style and look, as well as her eye shape, into consideration.’ Taking it back to London, Ashish took it one step further to a floating eyeliner matched with a fabulous cut crease. The use of vivid pinks and purples to match the outrageous and expressionist designs was not noted anywhere else on the runway. Joy of joys, our multi-coloured Morphe palettes still awaiting full use of its colour range shall sit dusty no more. Insta-glam has met reality and it’s time to get experimental with shapes and shades.

Subtle Neon – Can it Exist?

Where New York was serving coral lids at the Self Portrait show, Vivienne Westwood brought blue to Paris. Seemingly different to the evident powder shadows featured at Ashish paired with floating liners, these matte coral and blue sweeps are liquid matte shadows. Easy and efficient, turning to a liquid pen to provide a flash of colour across the lid proved to be popular at fashion weeks. With more brands newly releasing such products – Glossier Skywash sheer lid tints I’m looking at you – could we be looking at an easier and probably more affordable way of getting a high-end eye look? It is also important to note that this neon trend is not just applicable to shadow. Off-White met new boundaries with neon orange mascara. Although maybe unwearable, it does show that colour boundaries are being experimented and maybe neon is the new black.

Nails – The Ultimate Shapeshifters

Vivienne Westwood’s London presentation showed models sporting alternate nail paints in mostly primary colours. In typical Westwood style they were not elegant or subdued but daring and garish, and by no means neat. In contrast to that, Ashish’s flamboyant catwalk brought back the acrylic nail that we were so afraid was dying out and brought it back better than ever. Channelling Cardi B vibes for certain, the nails were elongated, pointed and embellished too. Either way, nails are definitely one to watch this upcoming autumn/winter season and it seems being different is the go-to. Is there such a thing as nail jewellery one wonders?

Glossy Like Glass

If there was one trend to tie all the designers together and to scream AW20 in unison it is glass skin. Not one hint of foundation was given, let alone a scrap of contour or bronzer. The focus was on eyes and lips and even brows were long lost and forgotten it seemed. Blush was used sparingly, although not at the Dolce and Gabbana show in Milan, where a classical rosy cheek and rouge lip was chosen. Once again Vivienne Westwood did go the extra mile with a glossy lip, though a sheer one at that. This no-makeup-makeup look might be effortless and therefore lacking effort, but one thing that is for sure is the transition into acceptance, a representation of real skin and as Dior’s Peter Phillips mentioned, dressing your face to your shape, so to speak. Surely, this can only be a good thing.

From the AW20 GCDS Collection

Bright satins, diamantes, PVC, leopard print; the GCDS A/W runway channelled everything garish and over-the-top- but in the most tasteful way. The brand stuck to the fun light-heartedness we are used to seeing from their collections with a vibrant pastel colour pallet and modern watered-down western vibes with corsets, big boots and rah-rah skirts.

Dolce and Gabbana

The sexy knit; an impossible feat if you’re not Dolce and Gabbana. Waste synching, figure-skimming corsetry, sheer fabrics revealing the skin underneath and a lot of leg (thanks to the barely-there hot pants) celebrated the female form. Whilst the oversized chunky knits and sharp tailoring brought a less effeminate edge to the collection that contrasted with the otherwise ultra-feminine silhouettes.

Moschino

Cakes and Corsets paraded down the catwalk in the 2020 version of Marie Antionette’s wardrobe. The sense of escapism and awe we feel when Jeremy Scott’s imagination meets the latest Moschino collection was, as usual, very much present when we saw his A/W 2020 collection which had the perfect amount of camp-ness and humour as much as it did craftsmanship and inventiveness.

Versace

From the feminity of the patterned, girly micro-mini-dresses to the more masculine slick, fierce three-piece suits, and everything in-between, Versace’s collection explored the different ways women express being female.
