The industry of fashion is trying to reinvent itself in many ways; allowing more diversity in, becoming an inclusive community, and even putting efforts to become a more environmentally aware sector. We have been witnessing gradual and positive changes, ones that many of us were fighting for, but unusual ones as well. Unusual ones like the inclusion of mushrooms in everyday wear.

Who would’ve ever thought that mushrooms could be fashionable? Well, get ready, because they might become a new staple material in the fashion world (and a more responsible one too).

The mysterious and wide category of fungi has become increasingly popular over the past years in the medical sector, with their researched use resulting beneficial to a range of problems such as mental health and unbalanced diets. Their popularity and benefits now seem to have expanded from the medical sector, even reaching the fashion one by becoming an alternative to leather.

As much as we may love it, leather is not the most sustainable of choices… It is an animal product that goes against the efforts to become more environmentally aware, it is also considered unsuitable by vegans, vegetarians and various religious groups. For this reason, many brands have often opted for artificial substitutes. But these are starting to be questioned due to their oil-derived plastics necessary for the production fo artificial leather.

Mushrooms, on the other hand, have become a viable guilt-free alternative as proven by brands like Stella Mccartney who recently just launched her first collection made out of Mylo’s Unleather. Mylo’s Unleather, created by Bolt Threads, derives from mycelium which represents the root system of fungi, and looks just like leather but with a lower environmental cost.

To our surprise, the British fashion designer is not the only one to jump in this new direction. Hermès has recently announced their partnership with MycoWorks, to produce their own fungi alternative to leather, with a material known as Sylvania, which will be incorporated into the production of their luxury goods such as for their iconic “Victoria” travel bag.

This initiative being taken by high fashion brands seems like an encouraging step towards the right direction in the fashion world. Nonetheless, we have yet to see how these products will be welcome by the public and other fashion houses, but it’s worth looking out for because if they are as promising as they seem, it may represent the so awaited goodbye to both animal and plastic derived leather.

Eighteen months, that is how long it took Daniel lee to transform Italian brand Bottega Veneta into the star it is today. The brand’s accessories have proved to be favourite this season and also prized, as the creative director won designer of the year and the brand won brand of the year at the British Fashion Awards. While the rest of the world was transfixed on the growth and prosperity of Gucci, Daniel lee was busy awakening the sleeping giant that he claims is Bottega Veneta.

Daniel lee arrived in the brand in July 2018. Coming from humble backgrounds, the designer worked his way up from Central Saint Martins to major fashion brands like Maison Margiela, Celine and Balenciaga. The creative director claims his position in Bottega Veneta has always been a quiet dream.

So, what has changed within the Bottega Veneta brand to cause such a stir and growth? Well, the answer is nothing. There was no rebranding, no major change in the brand only a realignment with the brand DNA and a reinvention of the brand’s archival pieces. Upon arrival in the brand, the creative director took all the bags associated with the brand and reinvented them to fit today’s quota. The pouch that first seemed impractical without a handle or strap to the merchandising team was advocated by the designer and is now one of the best-selling bags for their simplicity and photogenic nature. The designer also incorporated the brand’s iconic intrecciato (leather quilted pattern) into their shoes to a squared toe heel. Just like that, Bottega’s brand reinvention resulted in 2.2% growth in 2019. Lyst reported that demand for Bottega Veneta’s shoes and accessories spiked 53% this year.

This fall season the designer is seen to embrace the intrecciato technique to his designs. We see the merge between Daniel Lee and Bottega Veneta looks like a match made in heaven. The designer’s background in knitwear seems to coincide with the brands iconic intrecciato and his ability to mix and match textures and fabrics has seemed to allow the brand to complement the background in leather. However, the designer expresses that he aims to explore new themes for the brand, and we’re all on the edge of our seats.

Traditionally reserved for the winter months, leather is usually overlooked during our long (ish) British summer (ish). So you may be surprised at the leather reprisal gracing the catwalks this SS19.

Leather is now no longer confined to a bag or a jacket; it’s a dress, a shirt, even shorts if you’re feeling particularly promiscuous. The catwalks were prowling with fierce, summer leather looks, coupled with dewy skin and windswept, messy hair. The leather coat was certainly a staple for this season, seeing the likes of Versace, Hermès and Ferragamo showcasing coats in sumptuous Moroccan palettes of reds, blues and browns that suit all skin tones.

Spanish fashion brand Loewe’s soft bucket shaped leather bags are an effortless, casual addition to the relaxed, unstructured summer wardrobe, while their raffia bag with leather details gives it a grown-up, elevated summer feel, taking you seamlessly from beach to boardroom.

A move towards sustainable fashion sees vegan leather (posh pleather) really coming into its own in recent months, so you can strut the streets 100% cruelty free; whichever material appeals to you, it’s now wearable all year round.

From Hollywood and the top of the charts to being Instagram’s most followed person, Selena Gomez is proving herself to be a true creative with her recent collaboration with Coach.

Limited-edition bags and leather accessories form the collection that came from Gomez and Coach’s creative director Stuart Vevers special bond. Luxurious and practical, the designs are made for the modern woman, something that the collaborators wanted to achieve.

“We discovered Selena is a carryall girl. She wanted something streamlined, smart, but not too formal, with clean lines, important hardware. Something she could use that could go with anything.” says Vevers, with the result being The Selena Grace bag.

Creating items that have this feel was important, “I think the ultimate bag is something that goes with almost everything and you don’t have to even give it a second thought if it goes with your outfit,” says Gomez.

Keen to be in charge of her own brand, designs have been created from a point of prioritising what Selena Gomez loves, in particular her decision to create a bespoke shade of “Selena Red”, in the year of millennial pink. The colour red wasn’t the only personal touch Gomez wanted to bring through into the designs, as on the bottom of the Selena Grace bag, a self-penned quote “Love Yourself First” is embossed.

The ability to be true to herself has played a huge part in her success. As a musician, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist, Selena continues to grow her career, with this collaboration being the next step. Whether a member of Gomez’s fanbase, or looking to invest in a new item for your wardrobe, this contemporary collection is sure to appeal to many.
