With its complexity, setting, and choreography, it was much more than a regular show – it was a performance. After Lucky Love’s emotional “Now I Don’t Need Your Love” and a stunning short film setting the tone, we had a chance to marvel at over 40 outfits, with their corsets, eye masks, patchwork, bandage-like tights, and layers of transparent, patterned tulle, organza, and chiffon. Add some oversized trenches, tweed flat caps, and black knee socks to get into the avant-garde Parisian mood. The run-down bar setting arranged for the show, with its worn wooden floor, old-school chairs, winking yellow lightbulbs, vintage mirrors, and empty wine bottles had a magnetising vibe of an antebellum bistro somewhere in the artistic district of Montmartre.

The highlights of the collection include long, oversized trousers, suits, and woollen trenches with lines of thread visible – as if the amendments process was still in progress. Other recurring motifs were body curves underlining long skirts and elegant female coats with puffed sleeves, covered with thin, loops-containing Lycra. The iconic tobi-toe shoes were also there! The most impressive outfits were undoubtedly the transparent, ankle-length tulle dresses, which brought female corporeality with all their curvy lines, artificial wasp waists, and pubic hair to the front. No taboos are to be found there! The collection ended in four white-blue striped dresses, the last of which was presented by the classy Gwendoline Christie. The outfits, together with long gloves, curly wigs, and blue eyelids created the effect of an American doll from the 1950s. 

One of our absolute favourites was a long, purple-pink-yellow tulle dress, accompanied by a tulle-wrapped white hat. The outfit left an uncanny feeling, as the model’s face looked like the one of a button-eyed doll from Tim Burton’s Coraline, and the tulle seemed to cover the whole body, looking like the skin of an alien. Indeed, the great idea behind this and many other looks was for the models to resemble dolls. From the corsets worn by both men and women to the porcelain-like necks, inhuman, unearthly-looking faces, bandaged legs and throats, the shaky-walking models seemed like actual porcelain dolls brought to life. As they passed unstably, looking deep into the spectators’ eyes, often nervously covering themselves 

to produce a shy, emotional effect, they were much more than mere models. They were actors, who played in the great show embracing human sensuality, emotionality, and corporeality. 

The doll effect was mostly reached thanks to the breathtaking makeup done by the fabulous Dame Pat McGrath. The porcelain-like, perfectly smooth faces, the glittering lips, and the intense colourful eyes were just marvellous, with the fluffy, aerodynamic, hat-like hairdos by Duffy completing the looks.

With the audience cheering and shouting “Bravo!” repeatedly right after the show, it seems that John Galliano once again proved that he and the Maison Margiela fashion house truly deserve their position at the top!

“I found poetry in my reflection,” says John Galliano, who takes from the heritage of the House materials to help assist the deconstruction of dresses – typical of the brand.  However, the brand is not just deconstructed garments anymore. There are fragments of mirror and leather laces to be found, then there is the story, which is transferred to the clothes with pieces of newspapers embroidered by hand on the fabrics by Celia Pym, a message launched not to forget the past and establish a better future.

With the collection ‘Artisanal’ 2021 Maison Margiela after Recicla, has introduced a new technique, “the essorage”, which could metaphorically be inspired by the process that carried forward the alchemists. It is based on recycling, and the subsequent upcycle of fabrics from stock or charity stores, materials that are enlarged from eight to twelve times only to be restricted again through chemical washes and treatments that reveal the authentic colours. John Galliano draws on the blue works of Anna Sokol ova. Pictorial illustrations are transformed into blue embroidery on fabric majolica, assembled at a later time and resembling a knitwear sweater.

Another core of the collection co-ed ‘Artisanal’ 2021 Maison Margiela was the denim, which is brought back to the original use of fishermen. Blue denim pants, fitted with high fishing boots and padded jackets, but also layered in couture version over imposing dresses. And again the return to nature, with animal masks made of cardboard used at the time of the ritual. Carvings that propose prints in a three-dimensional version, tricorn hats and sailors that bring us back to the culture of the Dutch fisherman and imposing clothes built for assembly.

“A FOLK HORROR TALE” THE MAISON MARGIELA FILM A folk tale with truly horror shades. The video for the co-ed collection Artisanal 2021, created  by John Galliano and the filmmaker Olivier Dahan, tells this new sense of historical community brought back to nature in a version untouched by time and space. A 3D photorealistic badge emerges made with effects, lights, LED softwear, unreal landscapes that want to imitate reality inspired by the paintings of the Flemish artists.

In a culture where gender roles and stereotypes are being broken, more and more individuals are speaking out about their fluidity with gender and non-binary labels. Fortunately, we live in an environment where transgender and LGBTQ+ communities are being accepted into society and the fashion industry is finally recognising those identities in their trends and runways.

The boundaries of masculine and feminine fashion are merging together to create an androgynous look, often showcased on androgynous/non-binary models; a big ‘F-you’ to pre-existing norms where society dictated who you were and what you should wear. With fashion being a freedom of expression, androgynous trends allow those who are transgender or non-binary to wear what they want rather than trying to fit a certain feminine/masculine ideal. The trend also allows those of us who identify as cis male or cis female, to explore and find our personalities without feeling restricted to gendered clothing.

Fashion has come a long way from the full skirts of the 50’s, and figure-hugging corsets from the 1840’s. Catwalks and stores are now producing more oversized pieces of clothing that lack in shape and structure: think oversized blazers and loose trousers. Gone are the tailored shirts and body-con dresses, now replaced with baggy silhouettes keeping bodies desexualized. It’s not only women on catwalks adorning gender-fluid pieces, the men are also pushing boundaries by being seen in more feminine cuts and colours. Singer David Bowie is arguably one of the most iconic androgynous influences in recent history. His Ziggy Stardust persona is quintessential to fashion, as he integrated the worlds of feminine and masculine, keeping the public guessing his gender identity and sexuality as he defied the norms of masculinity.

A huge influencer of androgynous fashion is designer Jean-Paul Gaultier who has previously questioned, ‘What is masculine and feminine anyway?’. Some of his staple looks involved sending male models down the runway wearing floor-length, silk skirts, which is no surprise as he was also fond of dressing women in oversized power suits. His clothing often blurred the lines between masculine and feminine fashion. Gaultier was not alone in his experimental trends, Yves Saint Laurent was the first designer to introduce the suit as a form of evening wear for women in the 1960’s. His famous ‘Le smoking’ suit consisted of a black, pinstriped trouser and blazer, worn with a white ruffle shirt and black bow tie, it was considered the first tuxedo for women. The power suit has since come a long way, with A-list celebrities such as Kim Kardashian opting to wear a tailored suit instead of a gown and looking fierce for it.

Coat silhouettes the size of small cars walked the runways at the latest Margiela show- they’d surely keep you warm in the coming cold weather, especially if styled in layers reminiscent to that on the runway.

A vast array of coats left anyone looking for outerwear spoiled for choice. Do you go for the transparent mac? The over-sized iridescent puffer coat? The traditional style yellow raincoat or a futuristic trench coat? Whatever your choice, any of these pieces would surely add a head-turning get-up to anyone’s wardrobe.

This collection definitely isn’t for the faint hearted, with the fabric combinations creating strange, almost otherworldly looks that still thankfully remain at the height of fashion.

The word apocalypse comes to mind when looking at Galliano’s creations, most likely due to the mix of colours and textures of the fabrics. The smooth and sleek metallics and iridescents paired with softer printed fabrics and transparent PVC make for the softer, more fantasy-like side of the collection, not to say that these combinations don’t pack a punch.

Strappy detailing that resembles parachute harnesses adds another element of visual interest to otherwise plain coats, along with pops of the primary colours, knitted jumper detailing and classic woolen coats. Galliano went in on this runway to create garments and pairings that are absurd, but through his wondrous power, actually work.

Chunky shoes seem to be a trend this fall, and as other fashion houses opt for boots, Margiela went in the direction of retro trainers. Not just any retro trainers however, trainers that would bring a whole other aspect to your shoe closet. You want high top iridescent trainers? How about trainers with a retro platform sole available in black, red, blue and white with avant garde strap detailing? Margiela’s got you. It’s safe to say Margiela has your retro sneaker game covered this Autumn. Don’t worry, we sighed with relief too.

Galliano has creatively and innovatively crafted pieces that we didn’t know we needed until now. Why would you say no to an over-sized, sleeveless, transparent anorak? We certainly wouldn’t. So buckle up everyone, you’ll soon be seeing an array of coat shapes, sizes and silhouettes on the streets; we’ll be changing up our coat game, will you?

In true Margiela deconstructing and redefining the silhouette tradition, Galliano has designed a collection that is crushed, squashed and mutated beyond conventional recognition. Layering is the essence of this oeuvre which interprets the concept of “creating your own world within a world that’s very troubled at the moment.”

Think sleeping bags, protective packaging, corrugated cardboard and spongy packing foam, all with a master’s touch and the quintessential Galliano cutting, draping and volume.

Add to this virtual reality headsets, iPads and iPhones attached to the models’ ankles filming the FROW, and it is clear to see that Maison Margiela Haute Couture AW18 marries conceptualism with artistry and adds a touch of modern elegance.
