You might not know her name yet, but you’ve seen her work. If the J Lo X Shakira Super Bowl halftime show doesn’t ring any bells, then maybe you remember the iconic ‘Yummy’ music video by Justin Bieber; or maybe it’s the Savage x Fenty shows that sound familiar to you. Watching them, you might’ve wondered who the person behind those daring dance moves was. The answer, Parris.

Some people are born with a purpose; after watching Missy Elliot and Madonna dancing on TV, 5-year-old Goebel discovered hers, dance. ‘I’ve always been pretty confident in my dreams and where I see my future heading, so it didn’t take me very long to identify what I wanted to be when I grew up.’ she said in a 2017 interview. The New Zealand native dropped out of high school at just 15 to pursue her calling, forming a dance crew, Royal Family, and uploading herself on Youtube.

Her small troupe went on to win the World Hip Hop Dance Championship an unprecedented three times in a row.

After having worked with KPOP star CL in 2016, she popped up on Jennifer Lopez’s radar, which led to Parris choreographing Lopez’s world tour at just 19 years old. Her signature sassy and aggressive dance style (‘polyswagg’) broke the rising star into the industry as celebrities followed J Lo’s cue. Now, the 28-year-old has Ariana Grande, SZA, BLACKPINK, Janet Jackson, Nicki Minaj, and Justin Bieber on her roster. Oh yeah, and Justin’s iconic ‘Sorry’ music video a.k.a. one of the most viewed videos on Youtube? She choreographed that too. As if that wasn’t enough, she was also behind Rihanna’s iconic Super Bowl half time show this year.

After spending so much of her career as the industry’s best-kept backstage secret, Parris is finally stepping into the spotlight. She signed with IMG Models in 2018 and has since worked with giants like Dior and Alexander McQueen. She ‘polyswagged’ her way through a New York Fashion Week 2022 and became the face of UGG’s Spring campaign that same year. The star also recently co-hosted the NIKE Goddess experience after becoming a brand ambassador two years ago. And fashion’s not the only place Goebler’s leaving her mark: she’s released one music album, two books, choreographed two dance cult movies ( StepUp: All In), and received the New Zealand Order of Merit, and an EMMY

But Parris didn’t start as an Emmy and MTV award-winning artist. She, like a lot of us, started with an impossible dream, wild determination, and unsupervised access to the Internet. In a recent Instagram post, Goebel’s wrote ‘As you climb the mountain of your dreams, you will be greatly challenged…but your passion, strength and LOVE for what you do will override anything standing in your way.’ And that she did. With a career like this, there’s no doubt she’s the newest MVP in the entertainment world (and all our FYPs). Wherever she goes next, one thing’s for certain: Parris is living up to her name.

The science fiction comedy horror revolves around Gemma who works as a roboticist for the leading toy company Funki. Looking to stretch the boundaries of what AI can achieve, Gemma sets about developing a humanoid doll: the Model 3 Generative Android, or M3GAN for short. M3GAN is designed to be a kid’s best friend and a parent’s greatest ally, playing games, assisting learning, and being a general caregiver. Unexpectedly, Gemma gains custody of her niece Cady after her parents die in a car accident. Struggling to connect with Cady, Gemma gifts her a prototype of M3GAN, without completing the necessary test trials, leading to disastrous consequences when M3GAN becomes too attached to her primary user.

Get Out actress Alison Williams stars as the neurotic Gemma in the film and her unsentimental reaction to her sister’s death only adds to the bizarre hilarity of the flick – she seems more perturbed that her niece will be getting in the way of her career than the fact that Cady no longer has parents. Alongside Williams, child star Violet McGraw, who you may recognise as the young Nell from the Haunting of Hill House, plays the sweet, troubled Cady brilliantly.

We, like everyone else, are obsessed with the film, which was released on Friday 13^th January, and has already grossed over $95 billion worldwide. When the first trailer was released for the film back in October the inclusion of Taylor Swift’s ‘It’s Nice to Have a Friend’ caused quite a buzz with fans of the singer online. Then clips of M3GAN’s odd stony-faced acrobatic dancing started to spread on TikTok. The creepy doll has inspired many memes on Twitter like splicing clips from the film so that M3GAN is competing against the Annabelle doll (and obvs winning) in RuPaul’s Drag race. With over 5.6M likes on the M3GAN TikTok account the marketing team really turned this one out – people are totally creeped out by the women popping up dressed as M3GAN dolls but we also can’t look away! The website Chess.com even temporarily added M3GAN as a chess bot to play against to promote the film.

With TikTok and gay Twitter’s approval in place, M3GAN has officially joined the Babadook and the genderfluid Glen/Glenda doll from Chucky as horror’s new queer icon. With perfect campy comedic timing, how could she not be? The most memorable moment in the film which will have everyone in the theatre suppressing giggles is when Cady tries to question M3GAN about her involvement in a murder and to distract her M3GAN suddenly bursts into a beautiful rendition of Sia and David Guetta’s ‘Titanium’. The height of absurdity. Director of the film Gerard Johnstone told NME, “That song immediately popped into my head as being pretty perfect because [M3GAN] literally is made of titanium.”

It seems the crew knew exactly what they were doing when making M3GAN the audacious sophisticated doll we know today.  Williams told NME she thought “‘If there’s a chance we can make M3GAN iconic, this is going to be so much fun”. Johnstone seemed to have that thought in mind when designing the doll telling i-D magazine he was “very specific with everyone that she had to be iconic” and that if something felt wrong “it’s because it just didn’t feel iconic enough”.

M3GAN’s sharp oscillations between icy disdainful glares at the world and her sweet nurturing care towards Caddy is what makes M3GAN so hilarious. The special effects in the film are also impressive making the audience forget at some points that M3GAN is a doll and not a little girl just like the characters mistake her for in the film. Overall M3GAN is just a likeable character. Her murderous desires have spawned through the result of a flaw in her programming, poor trialling, and a rush to be ahead of the market not from any will of her own. Despite her psychopathic tendencies you’ll find yourself siding with M3GAN as she plots against anyone who even dares to look at her precious Cady wrong. Non-horror fans shouldn’t be put off by its genre as M3GAN is neither excessively gory or scary, but horror buffs will also be entertained by the innovative killings and multitude of off-the-wall moments.

As Blumhouse, known for producing a bunch of brilliantly dark twisted movies such as Paranormal Activity, Get Out, The Purge, Us, Insidious, and The Black Phone along with many more, are the production company that has brought us M3GAN it’s no surprise that it’s a hit with audiences.

Johnstone has confirmed that the sequel to the film is already in development and in a promotional Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’, he expressed interest in a crossover film with the Child’s Play franchise and his desire to have Megan Thee Stallion cameoing in the sequel! Double Megan is something we never knew we needed until now.

We’re suckers for anything swinging sixties related, which is why we are so obssesed with this eye and eyebrow look by @Sitabellan. Graphic liners have been all the rage ever since Julia Fox debuted the Ye era I-did-it-myself khol liner look, but this look is a little more classic with a twist of weird.

To create this look, invest in a good liquid liner and Kohl liner, do a straight flick as you would ususally but try not to make it too thick, this is your base. Then, follow the curve of your eyelid with a liner – or kohl pencil if you’re hand is shaky – and connect it to the end of your flick. You can add the lower lashes with your liner or pencil, making quick and decisive flicks down without letting it go too low, make sure these are sharp. For the eyebrows, use a spoolie and some gel to part and hold the eyebrows in flicks, if your eyebrows look too patchy after this, consider using an eyebrown pencil to bolden the look. To finish, use a natural liner and lip combo on the lips such as the Pillow Talk Lip Kit by Charlotte Tilsbury, no gloss.

As probably many of you, I started off this self-isolation by decluttering my wardrobe. The feeling of creating a clean space and getting rid of the old is something really liberating for both, mind and soul. And a good mindset is essential during those rough times and the perfect base for the upcoming weeks.I usually start by taking everything out of the wardrobe. That way I can get a fresh start – an empty ward-robe like a plain canvas, that is ready to be filled.

But what should I fill it with?Going through the huge amounts of clothes and making the first keep and toss piles, I soon started to realise what really matters. What I want to keep. What, no matter what situation is to be faced, always makes a good companion: the wardrobe staples. The classic pieces that truly stick around.

Since we, at VOIR, do not only want you to be well aware of the latest trends in the wonderful worlds of fashion, beauty, and arts, but we are constantly daring to be different.We want to give you something unique and a bit more than your usual fashion magazine. So let us start off with a little back story on the ‘Classic Wardrobe Basics’. They are timeless and chic, characterised by perfect cuts, good materials and neutral tones. There are a few that can be considered as classics, but if I had to choose only eight pieces to wear for the rest of my life, it would be the following…Little spoiler before we get started: we are not re-inventing the wheel and you have probably all heard of those items before, but we just want to give you some ‘food of thought’, before you start with decluttering or your next ‘online shopping trip’.

The Little Black Dress.

In the mid-20s no other than Gabrielle Chanel launched a long-sleeved crepe dress and made the colour black, which has been mainly used by poverty at that time, popular amongst all social classes. It is simple and sober, yet elegant and cool and can be worn day or night, sporty or chic. It comes in all shapes, lengths, styles and materials and is therefore perfect for every kind of body type.

The White T-Shirt.

The white tee has been worn by workers, however, it became popular after Marlon Brando and James Dean wore it in civil context on the big screen. Soon after, the garment was used as a plain canvas, to promote ideas, slogans, brands or political movements. It is so easy yet so diverse and truly the joker piece underneath them all. Just think of it: casual with jeans on a daily basis, work-appropriate with a blazer or cool by adding a leather jacket.

The Blue Jeans.

It is thanks to Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss that the denim classic, which has initially been introduced for factory workers, exists. Starting from the 70s, the classic denim became the uniform of youth, a symbol of casual wear and latest after designers, such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, introduced them in their collections, jeans found their way to our wardrobes and hearts.

The Trench Coat

First invented as a raincoat for soldiers during WW1 by the fashion house that is most known for it, Burberry, the trench shortly afterwards found popularity anywhere. It is a statement piece and safe to say, that it definitely makes a look. Just throw over a trench and instantly look put together.

The Leather Jacket

Irving Schott launched the first leather jacket, also called ‘perfecto’, in the late 20s. Legend says that the name origins from a good Cuban cigar, the perfecto. Throughout the years the classic version got some alterations. The biker jacket was introduced and soon after became a symbol of rebels. The leather jacket is THE item that makes every outfit look cool: a floral summer dress immediately gets some spice and combined with the little black dress and some red lipstick and you are ready for a night out.

The Blazer

This garment has several stories mentioning its first appearance, however, it is for sure that the origin lies in the mid-19th-century British boating culture. The blazer comes in many different colours and styles but it definitely is THE item that makes everything look chic. Take a pair of denim jeans and a white tee, put on a pair of pumps, throw over a blazer and you can go straight off to that meeting at work.

The Black High Heels

Although heeled shoes were first worn by horseback-riders and man to impart status, high heels, as we know them today, became fashionable during the 50s, especially because of Christian Dior and his collaboration with Roger Vivier. Today a women’s wardrobe can no longer do without the classic black high heels. Not do they fit with everything – from jeans to dresses, but they immediately make endless legs and a straight posture.

The Black Leather Handbag

In the 20s Gabrielle Chanel invented the Classic Flap, a handbag with straps that made a women’s life easier. A few decades later she decided to spice up this classic accessory and introduced the 2.55, named after its date of creation, February 1955. Although the classic Chanel is probably every girls’ dream and a symbol of status, a basic black leather handbag does its job as well and is a must-have item as it fits with basically everything.
