Aries

21^st March – 19^th April 

Fiery, Passionate, and confident Aries signs need films featuring characters as strong as them. The Woman King (2022), with Viola Davis starring as the fierce General Nanisca, will add fuel to any Aries’ fire. This historical action drama revolves around the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Aries love action and The Woman King is packed with well-choreographed fight scenes (as well as a bit of romance, amazing acting, and a great storyline). Brave and inspiring – it has Aries written all over it.

Taurus 

20^th April – 20^th May 

Taurus signs with their down-to-earth yet sensual nature love a realistic romance film that plays with the conventions of a typical rom-com. David O. Russel’s quirky love story The Silver Linings Playbook (2012) is sure to pack a punch with Taurus. Set in a small town in Pennsylvania, Pat a former teacher with bipolar disorder is released from a psychiatric hospital and moves back in with his parents, and meets a young widow, Tiffany, who also struggles with mental illness. The two bond over their struggles and Tiffany offers to help him get his wife back if he enters a dance competition with her. Starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro, it’s an interesting portrayal of mental illness resulting in a bittersweet flick a Taurus will appreciate.

Gemini

21^st May – 21^st June

Geminis have an unfair reputation for being the two-faced one among the signs when actually, they are the most extroverted, playful, lively, and social. Hidden behind their bubbly surface they are also fiercely loyal and intelligent. This is why Emma (2020) is perfect for them. Based on Jane Austen’s classic novel, Emma revolves around the well-meaning but blundering titular character as she plays matchmaker to her friends whilst accidentally getting caught up in a romance of her own. Geminis will totally see themselves in the charismatic, witty, and nosey Emma played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

Cancer

22^nd June to 22^nd July

Oh, sweet emotional Cancers beware – this movie will have you a wreck. Dear John (2010) is your typical heart-warming yet soul-destroying romance film. Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, it follows the life of a soldier (Channing Tatum) after he falls in love with a young woman (Amanda Seyfried). Though they decide to exchange letters with each other after he is deployed to the war the course of true love never did run smoothly. This film is full of heart – perfect for softies like Cancers. It’s a sob fest for sure.

Leo

23^rd July – 22^nd August

You can spot a Leo as soon as they enter a room. Full of confidence and comfortable being the centre of attention they need a fun flick featuring a lead as cool and enigmatic as they are. We all watched it and loved it as kids but when was the last time you revisited Wild Child (2008)? It still holds up as an iconic uber-camp teen movie with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Poppy, played by Emma Roberts, the admirably bratty teen from Malibu (who couldn’t get more Leo) is shipped out to boarding school in England when her partying pushes her dad too far. Mud, pink, Gucci, boys, lacrosse – expect it all.

Virgo

August 23^rd – 22^nd September

A thoughtful horror is ideal for a movie night pick for Virgo. The perfect sleuth, hardworking, reliable, patient, and most importantly logical Virgo doesn’t scare easily and will enjoy a spooky flick clouded in mystery. Jordan Peele’s Us (2019) is just the creative psychological horror that will challenge them. Gabe (Winston Duke) and Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) Wilson take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends but as night draws near chaos descends when their murderous doppelgängers arrive demanding retribution.

Libra

23^rd September – 23^rd October

Represented by the scales, Libra has a strong sense of justice. A politically engaged film will interest this thoughtful diplomatically minded sign. Two Distant Strangers (2020) is a short film starring rapper Joey Bada$$ that will give Libra plenty to chew on. Carter, played by Bada$$, just wants to get home to his dog after sleeping over at the house of his date. However, he mysteriously ends up in a time loop with a cop that has it out for him. This film examines the deaths of Black Americans during encounters with police and is an important one that everyone should watch.

Scorpio

23^rd October – 21^st November

A complex sign Scorpios are passionate yet persistent, loyal but strategic, and will enjoy a film with a complex main character like themselves. Miss Congeniality (2000) is a silly makeover chick flick that will lighten the heart of the toughest Scorpio. Gracie Hart, a tomboyish tough detective, is forced to infiltrate the Miss United States beauty pageant as a contestant after her department learns that the event is under threat from an anonymous bomber. It’s the classic trope – Sandra Bullock takes her hair down, puts some makeup and a dress on, and suddenly what do you know she’s pretty. You’ll be hooked throughout this action-comedy film with a hint of romance.

Sagittarius

22^nd November to 21^st December

Freedom-adoring and laughter-loving Sagittarius needs an off-the-wall film that will fill their quota for adventure. Charlie’s Angels (2000) is that film. Featuring plenty of eye candy with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore all starring in this kitschy and charming spy classic. Sagittarius will be thrilled by the great dialogue, array of stunning costumes and beauty moments, fabulous action sequences, and the dash of romance. We came for the fits and the stars and stayed to watch Lucy Liu kick Crispin Glover’s scrawny ass.

Capricorn

22^nd December – 19^th January

Overachieving Capricorns with their persistent spirit yet sensitive nature will definitely see themselves in Elle Woods. Legally Blonde (2001) is now considered a modern classic in the rom-com genre. When Elle gets dumped for a more serious girl she proves to her ex, the world, and herself how smart she is by joining Harvard Law School. This fiercely feminist film fights back against the idea being feminine and smart are mutually exclusive showing that you can rock a pink dress in court.

Aquarius

20^th January – 18^th February 

Matching to the beat of their own drum, the original and creative Aquarius require a film that will keep them on their toes. A great pick for an Aquarius movie night is Showgirls (1995): a fast-paced pulp noir about the dangerous rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle of showgirls in Las Vegas. Full of controversy of the amount of nudity in the film it bombed at the box office but has since gained cult status – it’s perfect for the boundary-pushing Aquarius.

Pisces

19^th February – 20^th March 

Light-hearted playful films will appeal to Pisces who are empathetic, romantic, intuitive, and mostly importantly dreamers. In Always Be My Maybe (2019) celebrity chef Sasha and her childhood sweetheart Marcus reunite just as Sasha breaks off her engagement. Sasha has always wondered whether Marcus is the one – could it be a case of right person wrong time or will their lack of honesty with each other drive another wedge between them? This sweet tale starring Ali Wong, Randall Park, and Keanu Reeves (?!) will have every Pisces feeling mushy.

Hustlers (2019)

Hustlers follows a group of strippers who steal credit cards from corrupt CEOs and stock traders who visit their clubs. Funny and dark, the film explores how strippers are mistreated by men and the bonds that hold women together when things go South. The film has an all-star cast featuring female baddies Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, Lizzo, and Cardi B.

Booksmart (2019)

Booksmart is the yassified Superbad that you are your bestie will laugh out loud at. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is a hilariously awkward coming-of-age comedy about two teen girls attempting to leave high school with a bang by spending their last day as students partying and breaking all the rules they rigidly stuck to throughout their schooldays. Amy and Molly’s sweet unbreakable bond and oodles of chemistry will make you fall in love with the odd duo.

Bridesmaids (2011)

If you haven’t seen Bridesmaids, where have you been? This outrageous comedy has everything that makes the perfect girlie film: a wedding, a female rivalry turned friendship, toilet humour, and a plane attacked by gremlins. Stick it on and you’re guaranteed some silly fun.

The Watermelon Woman (1996)

Funny, sexy, and poignant – The Watermelon Woman focuses on Cheryl, a young black lesbian who works in a video store with her best friend Tamara and aspires to be a filmmaker. She sets out to make a documentary trying to pinpoint the identity of a black actress credited only as the ‘Watermelon Woman’. The film exposes some powerful truths amid the wry comic moments, bickering between the friends, and steamy love scenes – it really is unforgettable.

Lady Bird (2017)

Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, and Beanie Feldstein star in this sweet complex coming-of-age drama about a girl who longs to move away from her sheltered life in Sacramento, California. The movie took the world by storm when it was released with many women identifying with the film’s awkwardly honest titular character inspiring many a Halloween costume. Lady Bird and Julie’s friend break up is a painful thing many girls will recall.

Clueless (1995)

If spending the holiday with a man has you screaming, “As if!”, then this staple of 90s cinema is perfect for your Galentine’s Day. This coming-of-age film made every teen girl want their own computerised outfit picker when it was released and featured the chicest looks from the likes of Calvin Klein and Dolce & Gabbana courtesy of costume designer Mona May. The film is a stylish revamp of Jane Austen’s novel Emma and features makeovers, romances, and of course the iconic friendship between Cher and Dionne.

Josie and the Pussycats (2001)

Josie and the Pussycats will bring a flood of nostalgia for any girl who watched this classic y2k flick as a kid. Not only is the film crammed with y2k rockstar fashion inspiration and an adorable yet fierce trio, but the soundtrack will also have you jumping out of your seat.

Little Women (2019)

Sometimes the strongest female bond is that between sisters which is something Greta Gerwig perfectly captures in Little Women. The film includes iconic female actors such as Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Saoirse Rose, Laura Dern, and Eliza Scanlen, as well as international heartthrob Timothée Chalamet. It’s an adaptation full of charm with themes of romance, female ambition, friendship, and loss making this drama a solid pick for Galentine’s Day. Sob warning: you’ll need a whole box of tissues for this heart-wrenching film.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is having a resurgence due to Andie’s adaptation of ‘You’re So Vain’ trending on TikTok at the moment. The ridiculous romance follows Andie (Kate Hudson), a writer for a women’s magazine who needs a guy to break up with her so she can write her article “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. She chooses Ben (Matthew McConaughey) who has made a bet with his friends that he can get any girl to fall in love with him. Hilarity ensues of course. We love Andie’s tête-á-têtês with her friends which makes this the perfect Galentine’s Day movie.

John Tucker Must Die (2006)

If you’ve ever had a man do you wrong this is absolutely the movie for you. John Tucker Must Die is a fun noughties flick with a terrific female cast including Brittany Snow, Ashanti, Sophia Bush, and Arielle Kebbel. The film revolves around a trio of high school girls who all discover the most popular boy in school has been dating all of them at once. Bent on revenge they enlist the help of a shy unpopular girl to break his heart. The soundtrack will also give you all the y2k throwback vibes you’re craving.

He’s Just Not That into You (2009)

He’s Just Not That Into You covers a myriad of romantic snags and muddles meaning you’ll definitely relate to at least one of the pairings in the film. Ocean’s 8

Ocean’s 8 is the all-female cast spin-off of the Ocean’s trilogy making heist films sexier than ever before. Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter star in this comedy in which the group plans to perform a heist at the annual Met Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. If you like badass girls doing it for themselves, it’s a no-brainer watch for Galentine’s Day.

The Other Woman

The Other Woman is the (slightly!) more grown-up version of John Tucker Must Die that also includes schemes of revenge plotted up by gorgeous women. When Carly (Cameron Diaz) finds out the handsome Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who she has been dating for 2 months is married she and his wife strike up an unlikely friendship. The two ladies then discover that he is cheating on them both with supermodel Amber and plan to take revenge on the greedy guy. We need to know who thought of putting Nicki Minaj in this film because her chats with Cameron Diaz are giving us life!

The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans won two of the most prestigious awards at the Globes bringing home the best film in the drama category as well as winning Spielberg the prize for best director. The film, that is loosely based on Spielberg’s upbringing, tells the story of aspiring filmmaker Sammy Fabelman who through the power of film learns the truth about his dysfunctional family. The film is dedicated to Spielberg’s parents and was originally conceived in 1999 with the help of his sister screenwriter and producer Anne Spielberg. The film stars Paul Dano and Michelle Williams as Sammy’s parents, as well as Seth Rogan and newcomer Gabriel LaBelle as Sammy. The film is scheduled to release in UK cinemas on 27^th January. Movie lovers you’ll definitely want to watch this rich homage to film on the big screen.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The sequel to the hit 2018 Black Panther proved that Marvel has still got it. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is an emotional rollercoaster with the film paying a touching tribute to Chadwick Boseman. The actor who starred in the original film sadly passed away in 2020. The film stars some of the strongest black female actors of this generation has seen: Angela Bassett, who won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Florence Kasumba, and Danai Gurira. Hurry to catch this action-packed spectacle whilst it’s still in cinemas!

Elvis

The charismatic Austin Butler won best actor in the drama category for his role as the titular character in Elvis and made young women fall head over heels all over again for the king of rock ‘n’ roll with the film’s release. Fun, ever so aesthetically pleasing with amazing costumes and set design, and of course featuring superb music, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis was a smash hit becoming the second highest-grossing music biopic of all time. Yet the film is also incredibly heartfelt following the rise and the fall of Elvis’ career due to partially to the financial abuse of his manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). This dazzling story is now available to watch on Prime.

Tár

Tár has been hailed by many critics as one of the best films of 2022 with many praising Cate Blanchett’s performance so it is unsurprising that she won the Golden Globe for best actress in the drama category. Sadly, Cate had to miss the ceremony due to filming commitments (although lucky for us we’ll get to see this first-class actress in something new soon!). The film stars Blanchett as the intense fictional composer Lydia Tár and follows her downfall as she struggles to record the symphony which will change her career. The film has heavy Black Swan vibes and is a must-see for all ambitious women thirsty for a top-notch psychological thriller. Tár will be playing in cinemas Friday.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Everything Everywhere All at Once has something for everyone. Featuring epic fight scenes with bumbags, out-of-this-world costumes, and ridiculous hotdog-fingered queer love stories. This film never fails to surprise and amuse. It’s also the most heart-wrenching film of 2022 telling a moving tale about a fractured mother and daughter relationship – we cried for the whole second half and there’s no way you won’t too. The film won Michelle Yeoh a much-deserved Globe for best actress in musical or comedy and Ke Huy Quan secured his comeback with a Globe for best supporting actor. Do yourselves a favour and go watch this absurdist comedy-drama on Prime now.

House Of The Dragon

The new instalment in the Game of Thrones franchise won best TV show at the Golden Globes continuing the legacy of the franchise winning at the ceremony. The show follows the Targaryen house, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, focusing on the incidents that led to the devastation of the house.  House of the Dragon is a complete must watch for all Game of Thrones fans of course but even if you haven’t got around to watching the original show this series holds up on its own focusing on two fierce female characters battling it out for the kingdom. With lush costumes, a great script, insanely good casting, Matt Smith in a rather fetching wig, and plenty of dragons, there’s no way you won’t get hooked. Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, is an actor to keep an eye on. With Season 2 due to be on our screens in 2024 you’ve got lots of time to catch up.

The White Lotus

The White Lotus is basically Succession for the girlies. The irreverent HBO anthology series won a Golden Globe for best limited series, anthology series or TV movie with the mesmerising Jennifer Coolidge winning best supporting actress in a limited series or TV movie. The show’s theme is trending on TikTok gathering huge hype and high ratings. The black comedy reveals the dark underbelly of the rich and elite as the plot revolves around a group of entitled guests with various flaws whilst they stay at the White Lotus Resort. The first season has an all-star ensemble cast with Connie Britton, Sydney Sweeney, Alexandra Daddario starring alongside Coolidge. With season two out now, featuring Audrey Plaza and Theo James, and season three confirmed to be on the way there are lots of binge-worthy episodes to get through here.
