With over 50 shows from some of the leading fashion houses in the world, there was definitely a lot to take in but don’t worry, we secured the main designers here. Milan Fashion Week was a moment to remember. 

Diesel

Milan Fashion Week gave us the collaboration that none of us expected: Diesel x Durex. The catwalk took place in front of a mountain of red Durex wrappers and was soundtracked by an intimate playlist in a show that championed sex positivity. 

The collection featured Diesel’s usual edgy denim pieces, but the most impressive by far was the way that the brand put a spin on distressed denim. Rather than the usual rips and tears that form frayed edges and loose strings; Diesel incorporated delicate mesh in a sort-of sheer darning detail. This intricate detail not only elevated the look of ripped jeans, but it also played into the ever-popular push and pull of masculinity and femininity as the aggressive rips created a jarring contrast to the delicate lace mesh. 

Roberto Cavalli

Denim was also a huge part of the Roberto Cavalli show. Cavalli’s history is rooted in denim, the designer began his career by creating Frankenstein-esque creations out of scraps of denim; this history was a central source of inspiration for Fausto Puglisi’s collection.

Alongside denim, the collection featured various looks that were constructed by a collage of leather, adding an edgier element to the otherwise bohemian inspired designs. The brown-looks felt very inspired by a 1970s rocker-chic aesthetic, highlighting the retro influences that were weaved throughout the collection.

The collection also featured a heavy segment dedicated to black lace. This section featured a variety of looks that utilised black lace; everything from feathered catsuits to miniskirts took to the runway. This collection was not only an archival-inspired homage to fashion history, but it also served to prove the sheer versatility of materials and the way that they can be used to produce a vast selection of looks.

Blumarine

Set against the backdrop of a blazing ‘B’ and stony outcrop, Blumarine took us on the journey of Joan of Arc. The metallic tones put a modern spin on the iconography of Joan of Arc’s silver armour and the shearling knee-high boots featured buckles that played with designs of combat boots. Chainmail tops and dresses served to show the versatility of the collection’s muse as the looks transitioned from martyr to party girl. 

This collection took Blumarine’s usual Y2K aesthetic, which often manifested itself in hyper-feminine looks of bubble-gum pink and floral frills, down a much darker route. The grungy collection was fuelled by danger and while still feminine, the looks explored the dynamic between violence, threat, martyrdom, and womanhood.

MM6 Maison Margiela

MM6 pioneered trendy tailoring this Milan Fashion Week. The collection was made up of a variety of tailored pieces, whether they were worn in sets or as individual pieces; layered or minimally styled; deconstructed or classically built; the looks demonstrated the versatility of tailoring. In a collection that emphasised the coolness in wearability, all of the looks were elevated yet rooted in simplicity. 

We have seen many designers stray away from show-stopping, viral designs that the internet devours recently as they favour more wearable designs that can maximise sales. While this may sound like a boring development, MM6 proved that it does not need to be. This collection emphasised the possibilities that exist in our day-to-day wardrobes, an important aspect of the fashion industry that must not be ignored.

Moschino

The Moschino Autumn/Winter 2023 collection was inspired by Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’. The famous melting clocks inspired the drip-like hems of the skirts that graced the catwalk. The fluid looks were paired with distorted patterns that both mimicked Dali’s painting and added to the ‘melted’ look of the clothes.

However, halfway through the show the collection took a punkier turn. The hedgehog-spiked headpieces were worn throughout the show, highlighting the influence of punk styles on the collection, but the clothes truly reflected this theme in the second portion of the catwalk. The elaborate ballgowns and extravagant silhouettes were Westwood-esque, in what many have seen as a tribute to the late designer.

GCDS

GCDS’ latest collection was inspired by the domestic, the looks took a more conservative and grown-up look to past collections by the designer, but that does not mean that the collection was plain or boring in any way. The collection featured a bag inspired by Giuliano Calza’s cat, a piece that highlighted the importance of domestic life within this collection. 

However, the domestic also came out in other forms, particularly the use of safety pins throughout the collection. This highlights not only the process of designing and creating clothes but also how clothes exist within the home. The use of such a mundane yet integral object within the collection perfectly bridged the gap between the high fashion industry and the domestic lives that inspired the looks. 

Cormio

Cormio have successfully jumped on the football bandwagon and used their show to emphasise the feminist roots behind this trend. The venue for the show was a football hall on the outskirts of Milan but, unlike the hyper-masculine world of football, women were allowed to take centre stage in this environment. 

Women in football have been marginalised and underappreciated for years and now femininity is fighting back. Instead of opting for more ‘masculine’ looks to fit in with this atmosphere, Cormio instead forced femininity into this environment, proving that there is a place for ‘girliness’ within football. The Y2K ‘punk princess’ inspired looks highlighted another traditionally masculine environment that has been successfully dominated by women for years. The pieces reclaimed sexist phrases and slurs, injecting an ironic sense of humour into the collection. 

However, our personal highlight from the collection was the hyper-feminisation of the literal football. Cormio turned the instrument of the sport, the thing that the entire game is dependent on, into a handbag in a camp reclamation of the sport. 

Sunnei

Never before have we seen a horizontal catwalk. But that is exactly what Sunnei gave us. Models gracefully traversed the traditional catwalk before partaking in an elaborate trust exercise at the end of the runway. After falling into the arms of onlookers the models crowd-surfed to the end of their runway. 

The collection itself prioritised eye-grabbing looks, from patchwork denim to fringed knits, the looks were perfect for the it-girl who wants to stand out. Much like the runway show, the collection was non-traditional but not unwearable, the looks perfected the more out-there elements of contemporary streetstyle. 

Dolce & Gabbana 

After days of online speculation, Kim Kardashian sat front row at the Dolce & Gabbana show this Milan Fashion Week in an archival red two-piece that was a modernised look from the designer’s 1990 collection. Although onlookers were yet to realise it, Kim’s look set the stage for the collection that they were about to see as the Autumn/Winter 2023 ‘Sensuale’ collection was deeply inspired by archival work.

While lingerie-inspired looks are not uncommon on the runway anymore, Dolce & Gabbana were designing these sorts of collections back in the 90s. With this context the lace-heavy underwear-as-outerwear looks that graced the catwalk this season were more historic than you might think. The collection even featured a corset from 1991 and a coat from 1997 as the designer works to bring back some of their iconic pieces.

Prada

Prada left casual wear in 2021 after owning Milan Fashion Week with a workwear meets sci-fi assemblage. Traditional trousers and trench coats were reinvisioned in shades of lime green and sky blue, alongside shell suits reminiscent of early 2000s space odyssey movies.

In a statement about the show, designer Miuccia Prada said her FW22 men’s collection aims to ‘make people feel important.’ And the Italian born designer didn’t disappoint. It would be impossible not to feel an air of authority in the shoulder-emphasising mahogany and black leather trench coats which marched Prada’s runway this week.

The fun, yet professional collection is a vision of post-pandemic style. Overdressing became a thing of the past after we wore nothing but joggers and jeans for two years. In turn, Prada’s FW22 men’s collection enables the wearer to look sophisticated yet striking everyday in overcoats and knitwear in an array of playful colours and styles.

Dolce and Gabbana

Among the zestful lilac lighting of the D&G runway emerged Machine Gun Kelly, who dropped his usual loud, punk attire for a white suit dripping in golden studs to open D&Gs FW22 Milano show. With his new fiance Megan Fox watching from the crowd, the fashion house couldn’t have found a star more fitting than Kelly to foretell the flamboyant menswear collection which was to follow.

Inspired by this generation’s individuality and flair, Dolce and Gabbana left their comfort zone behind with this collection, as they strived to represent the revolutionary style of Gen-Z. The Italian duo’s distinctive collection left it impossible to predict what would emerge from the runway wings next. With all-pink, ultra femme suits followed by monochromatic ski-style puffers styled with visers, to models wearing nothing but boxers and fur coats. It’s safe to say this show was a true reflection of the brand’s new ‘anything goes’ spirit.

Druv Kapoor

Kapoor’s new menswear collection branded ‘soul tech’ has been described by the designer as a representation of our true consciousness, destined to live eternally through technology. The futuristic collection, featuring overcoats covered in trippy prints and embroidered with quotes such as, ‘Linear Time is an Illusion’, is relevant in today’s digital age, in which our lives, jobs, and identities are becoming aligned to technology like never before.

After establishing his brand in 2013, Indian fashion designer Kapoor remarked that he wanted to move away from the notion that a male collection cannot incorporate femininity, with a goal to ‘break the archaic rules of gender’. Kapoor kept to his word during Milan this week, as his menswear presentation burst with fuchsia hats, floral bomber jackets, and pink embroidery. The brand incorporated masculine and feminine clothing features which would look amazing on anyone regardless of gender identity.

Dsquared2

The strings of LED lights which danced along the runway delivered a mystical mood to Dsquared2’s FW22 Milan menswear show. The Italian/Canadian brand conjured a collection which saw outdoor wear reinvisioned to become simultaneously practical and chic.

Dean and Dan Caten have evolved since their brand began with basic menswear like shirts and trousers. The brand is now characterised by its bold and eclectic styling. The twin brothers layered puffer gilets, suede fur-lined jackets, and turtlenecks in daring shades like orange and green this Milan fashion week- the perfect ensemble for stylish post- pandemic exploring.

The brothers are not afraid to combine clashing colours and prints into one look, which their FW22 collection demonstrates. From sequins with fur to tartan with stripes, no pairing is off- limits when it comes to Dsquared2.

Etro

The Italian fashion house, renowned for paisley prints and corduroy trousers, brought a relaxed and comfortable approach to high fashion in this week’s FW22 menswear show.

Creative director of Etro’s male collection, Kean Etro, sent roll-neck woolly jumpers with baggy vinyl pants, loose fleece co- ords evocative of pyjamas, and ankle- length paisley print coats which could pass as dressing gowns down the runway this week. Even the red and green paisley carpet stormed by Etro’s male models complemented the bold and wacky 1980s aesthetic which the brand proudly promotes.

Etro continued the playful, futuristic spirit of the season; flaunting cartoon-like exaggerated button sizes, ultra-shiny leather, and bold colour combinations like green and purple.

Fendi

A solid black runway illuminated by nothing but soft white lighting was the perfect precursor for Silvia Fendi’s minimal FW22 menswear collection. Fendi’s Milan show kissed goodbye to clashing patterns and welcomed the structured layering of rain coats, knee- length shorts, and waistcoats in a single shade or print. Neutral tones of beige, taupe, and grey dominated the collection, perfectly imitating the hues of the autumn months which the collection is prepared for.

The monochromatic moments were a highlight of Fendi’s menswear. Against the all-taupe and all- grey looks, stood out an all-burgundy ensemble which hinted at the season’s favour of leather. Leather belts, leather shorts, and leather bucket hats all featured in the passionate red hue and continued the brands legacy of producing ultimate leather creations.

Fendi also debuted re-imagined 1920s-style male knitwear. As male models on Fendi’s FW22 Milan catwalk sported knitted jumpers which revealed the chest through a cut-out design favoured heavily by designers this season, paired with matching knitted trousers in cream and grey.

Blue Marble

1980 met 2080 in Bluemarble’s FW22 men’s collection. While Anthony Alvarez’s Parisian brand is still in its infancy after being established in 2019, the designer was not afraid of making a bold mark on Milan Fashion Week. His Milan runway saw sequinned jeans, 80s-style Aztec prints, and scarfs in a multitude of vivid colours, perfect for staying warm but stylish in the autumn/winter months.

When speaking about his brand, Alvarez admitted he wants his clothing to represent and celebrate people’s differences, and his FW22 delivered on this promise. Whether you like to keep it classic with a beige trench, or live to be extra in a purple leopard print fleece, this collection has something for everyone.

Within this live audience were many high-profile celebrities able to admire the magnificence of the surroundings as well as remaining eager to watch Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana deliver a spectacular show and as always they did not disappoint!

These stars arrived in style by boat, which included Doja Cat, JLO, Bebe Rexha, Normani, Ciara and many more. Jennifer Lopez attended the show making a fashion statement as she modelled a dazzling regal, floral print attire from the designers. Featuring metallic styled trousers paired with a jewelled top. This was framed by a floor-length cape in shades of turquoise and greens as well as a standout floral patten. The star posted a series of images on Instagram showing off her astounding ensemble in front of the backdrop of this romantic city capturing the glistening canals in the background.

These famous faces weren’t only included in the audience but also held a spot in the show as rapper P.Diddys daughters were seen walking the runway. As D’Lila stunned us with a sky-blue puffy lace dress followed by twin Jesse rocking a similar styled attire but featuring a colour palette of pinks and blacks. Diddys’ eldest daughter Chance was also co-ordinated with her sisters in an all-black mini skater style dress with a red bow cinching in her waist. These looks were showed off by Diddy on Instagram as his daughters stole the show.

The designers main aim was to present  a younger side of Alta Moda as they claimed, ‘everyone thinks couture is for the old but that’s not how it has to be’, which is what prompted them to use younger models. This included several other celebrities children alongside Diddy’s such as Heidi Klums daughter as well as Christian Bales.

As a whole the Alta Moda show set out to celebrate the local artisanship and the culture of  Venice as it did not only act as the location of this remarkable event, but it was also integrated into their collection. The models arrived in true Venice style by gondola and were met by a long red runway. That is when the true magic happened as the outfits they wore were visibly inspired by the serpentine patterns on the floor of St. Mark’s Cathedral along with the kaleidoscopic patterns of Murano glass. Accompanying the models down the runway was the classical Four Seasons concertos composed by Venice composer Antonio Vivaldi in the 18^th century.

There was also an emphasis on satin in the collection as it reflected the canals which wind their way round the city with their silk like appearance.

The Alta Moda collection 2021 was rich with Italian culture and fulfilled its role of paying homage to the city and reflecting the fashion that Dolce and Gabbana are known for.

Dolce & Gabbana is back on the main stage, and this time not as a result of controversy or out-of-touch cultural remarks. The Italian fashion house has finally caught up with the times, at least in terms of clothing, and is now reinventing its traditional approach to fashion and its circular trends. With its Fall 2021 Ready-To-Wear collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana presented their stylistic take on the online culture and cyber-world everyone’s part of.

It may have come as a surprise due to the classic choices that characterised the two designers, however, it was welcomed by many, including the Tik Tok community that seemed to strongly inspire the vision behind this collection. Each one of the looks can be perceived through a post-modern take on virtual reality and reappearing trends… The prominent silhouettes and textured materials remind us of the archive collections from the 90s but with a more exaggerated approach and the inclusion of tech-like colour palettes.

The designs left us speechless but their styling and complementation with futuristic
accessories were what made a difference for us; oversized coats, statement sunglasses and extravagant hairstyles and make-up looks diversifying the looks and making us dream about a colourful and daring return to normality is what helped in the rehabilitation of our image of D&G.

However, if you aren’t a fan of futurism don’t panic, classic elements were still present but in disguise. From tight leather pants to structured black corsets, although altered to match the new vision, they were still there to remind us of the essence of this brand and provide us with ultimate staples that will always mark the fashion landscape (or at least we hope so).

While Copenhagen, New York, and London have welcomed Fashion Week in a mainly digital format, with big brands taking high advantage of this new platform, Milan’s fashion titans have kept physical shows up and running. But the controversy around these decisions has today been put to rest – fashion enthusiasts showed up and designers delivered a much-needed dose of creativity and vigor on the COVID-safe runways.

The “La Famiglia” home movie gave us a preview of the new Fendi Spring 2021 collection, predicting a runway filled with earthly tones and shades of white and ivory. Beautiful imagery of key characteristics of the collection was featured in a video directed by Norbert Schoerner, before the runway show itself. A pair of pink textured sandals, an ivory blazer, and baby blue lace detailing were some of the extra clues we were given about the new collection.

All the hints from the “La Famiglia” home movie and Nobert Schoerner’s intro checked! The show was opened by sheer loose shirt dresses in shades of nude. The collection expanded further in different textures and we have seen everything from a tailored oversized blazer, to a re-imagined puffer jacket. In terms of the colour palette, Silvia Venturini Fendi has favoured white as the colour of Spring 2021 – from the décor of the runway, to the multitude of the pieces featured in a crisp white shade.

Accessories in bright, strong colours (orange, yellow and pink) were the centre of attention. Matched with pastel blue or off-white, the chromatic of these looks is not only cheerful but modern and high fashion – exactly what we would expect from a brand like Fendi.

A classic of the Italian fashion scene, Alberta Ferretti has dipped into different textures and cuts, presenting a variate collection out of which the dresses are – by far – the biggest success. Cut-out or sheer, in baby blue, yellow or tie-dye green, the Alberta Ferretti dresses are truly luxurious.

Inspired by Sicily, the “Patchwork di Sicila” collection presented itself in a multitude of textures and fun patterns. For Dolce & Gabbana, Spring 2021 is full of fun and playfulness, reimagining the proportions and volumes of the Dolce & Gabbana ‘90s archive.

Opening the show with classical music and imagery of Sicily juxtaposed on patterns, the label created an emotional moment of belonging. Quickly followed by energetic music and vibrant garments, the tone of the show completely changes – happiness and pride shone through the collection.

For Spring 2021, Dolce & Gabbana have created sharp cuts, structured outerwear, and blazers in luxurious patchwork prints, ranging from metal mosaic to holographic gold and rustic. The designers have also heavily used denim for their unique patchwork prints, creating the jeans and miniskirts of the season. With these pieces, the label has demonstrated that artistry and craftsmanship can be achieved under any circumstances.

Yesterday we watched Italian fashion designers come together to present their Spring/Summer 2021 collections in day one of Milano Fashion Week Digital. We may be witnessing the events from home, but iconic brands [we’re talking Prada, Moschino, and Plan C] spoilt us with jaw-dropping collections. Today, Day Two of MFWD, the high continued. So, here is all you need to know to get caught up on Milan Fashion Week, the sequel.

LES HOMMES SS21: “The Essence of Contemporary Elegance”

Hybrid pieces sat at the forefront of this latest collection through the “unification of opposites” in seemingly contradictory looks. Creative directors, Tom Notte and Bart Vandebosch, fused classic and corporate tailoring and casual sportswear to present a SS21 collection that is designed for every occasion. Their SS21 collection is best characterized by distinctive tailoring, strong silhouettes, combined with informal street style and cutting-edge accessories. Signature tailor-cut blazers, leather jackets, and camel trench coats balance out the contrasting style of biker boots, chained belts, and cargo vests to depict the title of the collection; “contemporary elegance.”

The Italian Designer re-invented the traditional catwalk to present his SS21 collection in a utopian, space-age film. The neutral and muted colour palette of beige, yellow and brown presents a wearable and interchangeable aesthetic to the collection; all in all balancing out the archaic atmosphere of the film which incorporates elements of space, air, water, and fire.

For their Spring/Summer 2021 collection, M1992 dropped a seven-look collection inspired by the notion of brainwashing, fake news, and the acceptance of manipulation in today’s society. Moving into a virtual society since the Covid-19 hardship, this season we have seen the ‘waist-up dress code’ take centre stage when styling ourselves for online skype meetings. Playing on this, their latest collection favors statement print shirts and daring jewellery that pushes boundaries. With a distinct colour palette of neon green, the collection is embellished with images of brains and washing machines to bring their ethos and brand culture to life. Ultimately highlighting their profound concern; that our brains are being washed out.

Since collections have been showcased using digital platforms amid Coronavirus, designers have taken creativity to a whole new level to share their SS21 collections. Sunnei being one. As the first part of the collection to be dropped, Sunnei merged reality with the virtual world to present their signature pieces redesigned in total white. The idea behind ‘blank canvas’ allows each item to be personably customized; encouraging consumers to explore their individual creativity and personal style within the Sunnei brand. Truly being a collection that suits all- the opportunities are endless.

Serdar sat down and introduced to us his Spring Summer 2021 collection as a part of Milano Fashion Week Digital. Speaking of the collection: “I’m inspired by everything I love. Nature, beauty, art, colours, music, dance, and especially David Bowie.” Blue, green, mint and beige are the core colours of this collection, embellished through hand-made bandanas and necklaces; another core element to this collection. A balance between sports luxe and chic apparel is expressed and allows flexibility through a mix of casual and nightwear looks. Tailored tracksuit sets, loose tee’s and distressed denim bring nonchalance to the line, while a reflective jacket, structured leather and printed silk shirts inject refinement and poise.

Being the last, but certainly not least, Italian brand to showcase their Spring 2021 menswear collection in day two of MFWD, Dolce & Gabbana paved the way for the future of physical post-COVID-19 designer shows in the first socially distanced, masked up fashion engagement event.

While other designers taking part in MFW complied with the new ‘digital show’ trend, as expected, Dolce and Gabbana pushed the boundaries to express positivity and unity that the fashion industry needs, especially in this era. Simply, D&G felt their show could not be substituted for an online show. The open-air show screamed ‘social distance’ as guests attended the catwalk wearing facemasks as models showcased the new collection, standing one meter apart.

Distinguished from other Italian labels that took part in Milano Fashion Week Digital, Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana spoke out prior to the event regarding the emotional and physical hardship caused by coronavirus that has inflicted difficulties in presenting their Menswear show. Speaking of the collection, Domenico Dolce said: “I don’t like the ‘digital show’, the fashion show cannot be substituted with a screen display. Because fashion begins with people.” Especially with the essence of this show, the complexity and intracity of the clothes is unquestionably something that needs to be seen and appreciated with the raw eye.

The new collection is inspired by the colours of the Amalfi Coast and the surrounding sea focusing on cerulean, cobalt and light blue tones with neoclassical statutes embellished on the items. Silk sarongs, a rib-knit wetsuit, dressing gowns and Mediterranean style loose-fitting pants and shirts. Striking ceramic Italian patterns elegantly dressed the clothes, while distressed denim and patchwork injected a street, edgy feel. To say one thing, this surely was a collection we were glad to have experienced in the physical world. Patience really was a virtue and it paid off.

Nineties and noughties fashion is back with a bang. Puddle jeans, bandanas, and even claw hair clips are all over Instagram’s explore page as people are loving the easy and casual throwback street style. In particular, tiny sunglasses have been back for a while. However, brands have been getting experimental with the now known and loved micro glasses. It’s not enough for them to just be small, now they must be graphic as well. Zany and unapologetically garish shapes are being produced, and we just can’t get enough of them!

Hugely popular by would-be festival-goers are flame glasses and whilst these festivals may have been cancelled this year, it doesn’t look like the glasses have been. Prada has taken this graphic design to a new and luxurious level. Keeping the classic lens and adding a vibrant flame to the rim, this pair of specs perfectly blends old with new to produce some flaming hot glasses.

Shells, hearts, lips and wings are all popular shapes being produced by major fashion houses. Balenciaga’s heart-shaped sunnies feel fresh and youthful whilst Saint Laurent’s cat-eye heart frames create a more flattering shape. They may seem silly at first, but it is exciting to be able to play with such childish, funky and unexpected accessories. Glasses like these are already being replicated by high street retailers like Urban Outfitters.

Gucci have also put their own spin on the heart specs. The ‘Hollywood Forever’ pair in the classic black colour offsets their unorthodox lens, and the gold detailing adds an extra pop of luminosity. Miu Miu is another fashion house that has been combining classic and alternative styles. Their shell-shaped sunnies are reminiscent of the classic Ray-Ban aviator style, but with the added detailing of the shadowed shell rim. This pair of cool blue glasses are perfect for a beach day.

Sunglasses aren’t just protective anymore, they’re a statement too. The shape they come in and the colour you choose means these glasses can be matched to specific outfits and completely optimise your style. Some are even being bejewelled. From hanging charms to diamante detailing, these sunglasses are getting really retro. Emma Chamberlain’s collaboration with Crap Eyewear late last year explored these more fun and vibrant options. The Jinnnn X Percy Lau ‘Bambi 01’ glasses also use this detailing to create a beautiful and colourful pair of folding specs.

Whilst some brands have been going more pop-couture, others have been delving into geometric lenses. Dolce and Gabbana, Chloe, and Dior have all brought out some really refreshing shapes in fun tints. The scalloped edges of the green Chloe glasses add dimension to the frame, and the gold detailing to the Dolce and Gabbana octagonal frames makes these specs look and feel so luxurious.

Brands like Gucci and Versace have been playing with neon colours and semi-transparent, tinted frames. These monochrome specs play with colour and shape to create a young, fun pair of glasses. Gucci have even detailed a neon pair of their specs with tiny stars to exaggerate the youthful look. These eccentric sunnies are an easy way to get funky with your outfits or to add just a little bit of a 90’s pop to your looks. An outfit is never complete without a few accessories, so why not get outlandish and cop a pair of graphic sunglasses this summer?

Paris fashion week ends on a high with Louis Vuitton closing the runway for the season, and that’s a wrap on all things AW20 fashion and beauty. As promised, New York gave us an effortless glow, London provided eccentricity at its finest, Milan oozed godly classics and Paris wished us bon voyage with sultry tones that stun. What’s evident is that skin and base makeup is absolutely taking the backseat this winter because the only purchases worth making to stay on trend is a precision liquid liner and your trusty dark autumn lip shade.

Here is a roundup of beauty trends to follow for high-end style in your high street setting.

Lining The Eyes

Did we mention that overlooking the crumbly unpredictable kohl and heading straight for the sharp liquid eyeliner is your best bet to achieve geometric greatness? At NYFW, Vera Wang’s gothic eye look was exaggerated and haunting and not alone. Gucci and Moschino are examples of a wide range of designers who used liner prominently on the catwalk. Of course, in Paris Dior made it sweet and sexy focusing on the outer corners to create intensity and draw attention. Makeup artist for the show, Peter Phillips was said to have ‘emphasized the eye taking each model’s personality, style and look, as well as her eye shape, into consideration.’ Taking it back to London, Ashish took it one step further to a floating eyeliner matched with a fabulous cut crease. The use of vivid pinks and purples to match the outrageous and expressionist designs was not noted anywhere else on the runway. Joy of joys, our multi-coloured Morphe palettes still awaiting full use of its colour range shall sit dusty no more. Insta-glam has met reality and it’s time to get experimental with shapes and shades.

Subtle Neon – Can it Exist?

Where New York was serving coral lids at the Self Portrait show, Vivienne Westwood brought blue to Paris. Seemingly different to the evident powder shadows featured at Ashish paired with floating liners, these matte coral and blue sweeps are liquid matte shadows. Easy and efficient, turning to a liquid pen to provide a flash of colour across the lid proved to be popular at fashion weeks. With more brands newly releasing such products – Glossier Skywash sheer lid tints I’m looking at you – could we be looking at an easier and probably more affordable way of getting a high-end eye look? It is also important to note that this neon trend is not just applicable to shadow. Off-White met new boundaries with neon orange mascara. Although maybe unwearable, it does show that colour boundaries are being experimented and maybe neon is the new black.

Nails – The Ultimate Shapeshifters

Vivienne Westwood’s London presentation showed models sporting alternate nail paints in mostly primary colours. In typical Westwood style they were not elegant or subdued but daring and garish, and by no means neat. In contrast to that, Ashish’s flamboyant catwalk brought back the acrylic nail that we were so afraid was dying out and brought it back better than ever. Channelling Cardi B vibes for certain, the nails were elongated, pointed and embellished too. Either way, nails are definitely one to watch this upcoming autumn/winter season and it seems being different is the go-to. Is there such a thing as nail jewellery one wonders?

Glossy Like Glass

If there was one trend to tie all the designers together and to scream AW20 in unison it is glass skin. Not one hint of foundation was given, let alone a scrap of contour or bronzer. The focus was on eyes and lips and even brows were long lost and forgotten it seemed. Blush was used sparingly, although not at the Dolce and Gabbana show in Milan, where a classical rosy cheek and rouge lip was chosen. Once again Vivienne Westwood did go the extra mile with a glossy lip, though a sheer one at that. This no-makeup-makeup look might be effortless and therefore lacking effort, but one thing that is for sure is the transition into acceptance, a representation of real skin and as Dior’s Peter Phillips mentioned, dressing your face to your shape, so to speak. Surely, this can only be a good thing.
