The Dior fashion show featured a number of notable celebrity appearances. Amongst the renowned guests was actress Elizabeth Debicki, well known for her portrayal of Princess Diana in the famous Netflix series “The Crown,” graced the occasion with her elegant demeanour, reflecting the perfect example of regal sophistication. Also, singer Rosalia’s made an appearance as well as Caroline Trentini, a supermodel and house friend adding to the show’s extravagant environment. Their presence not only added to the excitement of the runway show, but also highlighted Dior’s lasting appeal in a variety of entertainment and cultural contexts.

Renown for their feminine silhouettes cult label Dior threw away their playbook this season instead, Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri has injected feminism the collection, willing for women to dress for themselves.

Chiuri invites us to reimagine the female archetypes, from the ‘dangerous’ medieval witches to the ‘devilish’ femme fatales of 19th Century France. In a nearly all-black color palette, the show was a funeral for the clichés we have been fed our whole lives, unchaining the women of the present through garments that reclaim the power of the past.

Bewitching displays were present in fishnet and cobweb patterns, charred gray denim, delicate lace dresses, and frayed tailoring. The Parisienne Independent Thinkers were in the maps and Eiffel Tower graphics on structured blazers and long woolen coats. She reframed female stereotypes by adding gladiator straps to ballet pumps, utilitarian silhouettes to aprons and capes, and fitting power suits under dainty, cinched belts.

Contrasting her earnest message was a colorful backdrop filled with satirical feminist slogans: the ‘Not Her’ art installation by Italian artist Elena Bellantoni. “It’s the dark side of Dior!” Chiuri claimed with a enchanting glint in her eyes.

On the closing day of MFW, just as the sun finally shone after a week of rain, Karoline Vitto made history. Known for her body-positive clothes, the London-based Brazilian designer had a tear-filled, monumental show supported by Dolce & Gabbana. Although she has been making waves for the last two years with her inclusivity message at LFW, it’s nothing compared to the significance of having only plus-sized models strut down the Milan runways.

Vitto brought true, authentic inclusivity to the fashion capital. Models from size 10 to 24, were flown in from her London studio. The collection further proved this, as she used her signature jersey and metal materials to hug the folds and curves society condemns women for.

Structural metal rings laddered down hips and thighs, while skimpy swimwear, barely-there slip dresses, and low-rise trousers celebrated models’ bodies. Structured bustiers, skin-bearing vests, and jersey cutout dresses followed. Vitto wants the runway to represent real women because, in her own words, ‘the majority of us are not sample size, we should be seen.”

After showing with incubator Fashion East at LFW for the past two years, Vitto gained the support of Dolce & Gabanna after world-renowned stylist Katie Grand vouched for her. It comes as no surprise then that we saw classic Dolce lingerie shapes and references to their 1992 collection, coupled with the archive fabric and size-inclusive heels gifted to Vitto by the Maison.

Post-show, editors, models, guests, and the designer herself hugged in joyful tears. Ashley Graham, who opened the show, exclaimed: “You should be crying, it was incredible! We just made history!” She then turned to the reporters. “It feels normal. You want diversity? This is diversity. More designers should be doing this. We need more curves on the runway, we need to have this be the normal. If I’m feeling normal on a runway with this many girls, it means that there’s something that doesn’t feel normal on runways everywhere else.” If this is where fashion is going, count all of us in.

Vaquera SS24

For the SS24 season, Patric DiCaprio and Bryn Taubensee brought their signature NY subversive eroticism to Paris. The show was a look at how celebrities navigate a life filled with cameras– and how we do too, now that we’ve all become our own paparazzi.

Models used ball caps, black-tinted sunglasses, and bags to hide from the flashing cameras and high-pitched tones that made the runway. They dodged and pushed their way through standing guests who, ironically (or appropriately) filmed everything like fans pushing against a security barricade.

Inspired by the 00s and 10s, we saw fishnet bodysuits, puffball gowns, bottomless chaps, and a ‘I Heart NY’ shoulder bag. Titled ‘Does It Really Matter’, the show even brought back Tumblr’s most wanted 2000s piece: the ‘Commes des Fuckdown’ slogan cap.

Vaquera questions whether celebrities’ need to be either constantly filmed or remain anonymous really matters when everyone has an iPhone anyway. Whether our own desire to hide or film ourselves truly deserves any attention. Reflecting this camera-shy vs. camera-loving duality, conventional looks were split down the back to reveal buttcheaks and bra straps.

A traditional black tube skirt was overlayed with pink underwear, simple black pantsuits had bondage straps, and golden tank tops had breast cut-out circles. Even if the show stood out for bringing out its classic devilish fun, the message behind it gave us food for thought–or, in this case, fashion for thought.

AVAVAV SS24

Every season, Stockholm-born designer Beate Karlsson breaks the internet with her humor-riddled show (last time the clothes literally fell apart down the runway). And, although the SS24 crowd also ended in laughter and delightful. And, although the SS24 crowd also ended in laughter and delightful gasps, the now-viral collection called out the toxic hustle culture we live in.

Stressed-looking models sped down the runway as they finished dressing, some even sporting half-finished designs or mascara running down their faces. The show opened with the backstage staff quickly stamping ‘AVAVAV’ post-its on the wall and pushing a model onto the runway. After anxiously trying to return BTS, she took off in quick strides as the second model appeared wearing an unfinished graphic T-shirt with “ADD BACK?! lettering.

The show was about emoting the pressure, chaos, and overwhelm we deal with regularly. It called out the time crunches and unrealistic deadlines designers have to meet while juggling a million things season after season after– you get the point. Models fought back tears as they sported sheer leggings, gloves, and furry boots with “Filthy Rich” tattooed on their chest instead of a top.

Some hid their faces altogether with front-facing hoodies, others had question-marked Sharpie annotations on T-shirts and one walked out wrapped in duct tape. Near the end, a model even ran down the runway with two foam blocks that read “ADD SHAPE”. What really took the lid off was the last look: a power suit made entirely of empty post-its. Titled, “NO TIME TO DESIGN”, AVAVAV somehow managed to be the most out-of-the-box and relatable show of Paris Fashion Week, simultaneously.

Both Chiuri and Dior have a long history with India and this was embraced for the collaboration through work relations and friendship. She has a close friendship with Karishma Swali, the director of Chanakya atelier and Chanakya school of craft. Chiuri first began working with the atelier two decades ago and the collection relies on their mastery of embroidery and traditional Indian techniques, while putting emphasis on empowering female Indian artisans and their inventiveness.

Dior’s relationship with India goes even further back, with former artistic director Marc Bohan
travelling to India in 1962 to showcase looks in Mumbai and Delhi.

Chiuri paid homage to the initial meeting by incorporating a quote found in the archives, ‘L’Union fait la force’, meaning ‘Union is strength’ into the collection, visualising how working together creates fresh connective energies, like combining classic Dior silhouettes with traditional Indian designs.

The show took place at the Gateway of India monument in Mumbai, which was built in the early 20th century to commemorate the British monarchy’s first-ever visit to India. The arch is a metaphor for the fusion of cultures and traditions. Erected in front of the arch was a 14-meter-tall Toran, an embroidered fabric traditionally hung at the entrance to welcome guests into your home. It featured elephants, tigers, and peacocks and took 35,000 hours of handwork and encompassed 25 craft techniques. The Chanakya ateliers and School of Craft worked together over several months to create it using phulkari, french knotting, kantha, and mirror work techniques. After emerging from the Toran, models paraded between dozens of gold candles and ornate arrangements of marigolds.

The 99 models, with many being Indian, wore bright-coloured silks, traditional Indian cuts, boleros, gold and silver, and sari-inspired skirts. ‘Zardozi’, metal embroidery, and ‘Ek Taar’, elaborate embroidery using a single thread, adorned the outfits.

Celebrities also came out in force, from legendary cricketers to famous Hindi actresses.

Maria Grazia Chiuri has had a long-standing partnership with Chanakya, a Mumbai-based atelier and home of the Chanakya School of Craft. The non-profit school for women was founded in 2017 and states its mission is to “provide women from low income communities with high-quality education in hand embroidery, enabling them to maximize their potential and enhance their lives.” With such an important message behind it, it is obvious why fashion’s number one feminist Maria Grazia Chiuri would want to work alongside this organisation. 

Dior has collaborated with Chanakya multiple times in the past. In 2020, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Judy Chicago worked with the Chanakya School of Craft to create 22 hand embroidered panels to be featured in their Spring Couture show. This partnership continued in 2021 when Dior worked with artist Eva Jospin for their Autumn/Winter show presented at the Rodin Museum.

The backdrop for this show was a forty-meter gallery that was entirely embroidered by those at Chanakya. However, for the upcoming collection, Chanakya is not limited to the backdrop of the show as some of the actual pieces will feature their embroidery. The collection is also said to include other traditional Indian influences such as sari-inspired pieces and silk dresses.

Maria Grazia Chiuri’s spotlighting of Chanakya has been heavily praised within the media, as many designers utilise India’s embroidery and other garment techniques in their production but don’t advertise this fact. By locating the show in Mumbai, Chiuri is centring Indian artistry at the core of this collection, she took to Instagram to share:

“^{I have worked with the Chanakya Atelier for over 20 years, developing a close friendship and working relationship with its directors and founders Nehal and Karishma.
 
The relationship with Karishma, Nehal and all the artisans in their ateliers in Mumbai has been fundamental for my personal and professional growth. 
 
It was through this relationship with Chanakya that I was able to learn so much about the artisanal embroidery techniques, which are still found in each and every Indian region, and the unique ability of the Chanakya Atelier to put them in dialogue with the fashion industry. 
 
I personally wanted to celebrate and showcase the incredible knowledge India offers to the international world of fashion in the field of embroidery, the mastery of the artisans who continue to work on this craft, and the commitment of Chanakya’s founders to preserving India’s history and culture, portrayed by each embroidery technique.} “

This post highlighted something else that is at the core of this show, community, but more specifically a community of women. We all know that Chiuri is a proud feminist and that she injects this into her work. In fact, her first ever show for Dior in 2016 saw the iconic “We should all be feminists” t-shirt take to the runway, setting gender-equality at the centre of her vision from the very beginning. With this in mind, it is not surprising that Chiuri wants to take this opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the Chanakya’s community of women and the positive work that the non-profit does. From temperature-changing fabrics to AV/VR dressing rooms- Who knows where technology will take fashion next?

Take a look at some of these designs that experiment with modern techniques

Dior

In Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2022 show, Maria Grazia Chiuri combined traditional silhouettes and technical innovation – resulting in a forward-looking collection.

Chiuri collaborated with the Italian company D-Air lab, which designs clothing with built-in protection. For example, their clothes can make emergency calls, or some garments are able to inflate, acting as an airbag to protect from impact in the case of a severe fall.

Chiuri was captivated by this innovation. She worked with D-Air lab to create new technologies for Dior’s New Look collection.

Among the pieces in the collection is a bodysuit with a pattern that resembles blood vessels, which glows in the dark. Another is the Bar Jacket, which has a temperature control feature designed to adjust to the body’s temperature.

CuteCircuit

Designers of CuteCircuit, Francesca Rosella and Ryan Genz, took a little black dress to a whole new level with graphene- a material more resilient than diamonds.

For CuteCircuit’s dress, the team partnered with scientists that created graphene-enhanced sensors. These are lined throughout the garment’s top half and can capture the wearer’s breathing patterns. A microprocessor analyses the breathing patterns and causes the dress to shine with LED lights. For shallow breaths, LEDs change from orange to green, while for deep breaths, they change from purple to turquoise.

We might see the same system in the CuteCircuit collection in the future for sportswear and ready-to-wear items.

Iris van Herpen

She pushes the boundaries of couture construction with her creations. Designer Iris van Herpen specializes in experimenting with modern technology, such as 3-D printing.

Using silicone to coat hand-blown glass spheres, van Herpen created a dress that looked as though it was made from bubbles. The dress’s structure is held up, mimicking Marilyn Monroe’s unforgettable white dress moment.  

The designer doesn’t only create garments out of glass, but, Known as Magnetic Motion, Iris van Herpen’s 2015 spring collection was inspired by CERN, the world’s largest particle accelerator in Switzerland. Known for her ability to create wearable artwork, Herpen’s Magnetic Motion collection uses 3D printing and magnets to create a futuristic look. Innovation is a hallmark of Herpen’s collections, and Magnetic Motion is no exception. 

Ying Gao

Montreal-based designer Ying Gao has created dresses with eye-tracking technology that light up, move, and change shape when you look at them.

The ivory dresses are made from shredded and ruched super-organza- the world’s lightest fabric. The fabrics are sewn with photoluminescent thread and are embedded with minuscule electric devices that track the eyes.

The gaze-activated dresses include smaller motors sewn into them that make them move and change shape when looked at, transforming these clothes into radiant forms of artwork.

Zac Posen

One cannot forget the ever-enchanting dress Clair Danes wore at the 2016 Met Gala. Nicknamed the Cinderella dress, Danes truly set the bar for all Met Galas that followed. Designed by Zac Posen, the dress is made from fibre optic woven organza- a type of sheer, lightweight fabric, allowing the dress to shine in the dark.

The gown is hollow underneath with no tulle, and 30 mini battery packs are sewn into the gown’s under-structure, a “Galactic Cinderella” moment, as the designer said.

Andrews Schneider

Forget about bringing a portable charger to the beach; changing the game is Andrews Schneider’s solar-powered bikini. This bikini can power devices like iPods and other similar small gadgets through the USB connector attached to the suit. Forty thin-film solar cell strips are sewn onto the bikini, allowing the swimming suit to charge the devices.

Wearing the bikini while swimming is still totally safe. The Solar Bikini has a 5-volt output, but no energy is stored in the suit, making it perfectly safe to wear in the water.

Burberry

Burberry collaborated with digital production agency Koffeecup to develop new software that would enable the brand to speed up the designing process and simplify the process of placing prints onto garments.

An instant preview of the finished product can be seen by placing a two-dimensional print on a three-dimensional product template. This allows instant feedback in real-time. 3D has become a staple tool in Burberry’s print engineering process, enabling a more sustainable, creative, and efficient merchandising model.

The first products designed using the technology appeared in the Pre-Fall 2020 collection.

‘From the New Look to the New Era’

Dior’s signature silhouettes – Maison Dior will always hold a special place in the French capital. It is here that the ‘New Look’ was born, a set of romantic, hyperfeminine- fin de siècle- silhouettes that evoke the clothes worn by Christian Dior’s mother. The development of structured heavy-wear fabrics led to a particular post-war fashion period for women. 

Since becoming Dior’s first female creative director in 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri has continuously pushed the sartorial envelope for the House, best known for its nip-waist accentuated busts. Chiuri has now unveiled a fresh ready-to-wear collection that reflects on the conditioning of women throughout history.

This creative director is bringing Dior’s New Look into ‘The Next Era- Chiuri made a point of only hiring female photographers for this campaign. The AW22/23 ready-to-wear campaign features portraits of women amidst a dramatic red backdrop.

Chiuri’s collections are situated on the cusp of Dior’s history. The garments and accessories take inspiration from women’s fashion past and present- pieces that blend the classic Dior aesthetics with a modern flair. 

This show’s title comes from Mariella Bettineschi, in which the Italian artist showcased large-scale portraits of women in paintings dating from the 16th to the 19th century.

Embracing Bettineshi’s male gaze reversal, the ardent feminist Chiuri has utilized Dior’s antique aesthetic as a reminder of the truth about women’s struggle throughout history, and the modernisation of the classic Dior silhouette featured on this year’s runway signifies the milestones made in women’s suffrage history. 

Models América González, Maryel Uchida, Steinberg, and Philyne Mercedes are featured in the campaign, styled by Elin Svahn.

The cut, stark eyes that face the camera symbolise the questioning of the conditions that have condemned women past and present. The gaze is reversed to suggest a different interpretation of art history. Through the artistic arrangement, materials, and silhouettes, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s concepts come to life through Niedermair’s photography. Chiuri reconstructs the relationship between body and garment in a performative manner.

Dior’s iconic Bar jacket was reimagined in structure and tech innovation, regulating the body’s temperature and warming or cooling it as needed. An illuminated criss-cross bodysuit also followed, which controlled its wearer’s body temperature.

The iconic Roger Vivier for Dior pump was reimagined in Fall/Winter 2022, using technical fabric instead of leather. Several items, such as belts and corsets, were used, giving everyday wear a futuristic and versatile twist.

A collection of skirts and dresses exhibited Chirui’s recognizable touch from a new perspective. An elevated approach was achieved by reinventing pleated skirts like the Grisaille from men’s clothing; technical knitwear featured embroidery on waterproof materials, gloves, Moto jackets, and bright stockings reminiscent of biker accessories were paired with gowns.

As a nod to Chiuri’s rebellious yet respectful nature, she used a print from a backdrop of a portrait of Christian Dior to create a new print, seen on an oversized coat with couture gloves.

Laurent Kleitman, President and Chief Executive Officer at Parfums Christian Dior, claimed that the brand has ‘put flowers at the spearhead’ of their sustainability strategy to ‘preserve their heritage and develop their presence in the ecosystem.’ Partnering with the world’s largest agricultural campus, Hectar, to launch a scalable education programme focused on regenerative flower farming by 2023, Dior is shaping a kinder future via natural raw materials and a carefully considered value chain.

Most recently, Dior Haute Couture launched its Autumn-Winter 2022-2023 Collection, taking place on July 4th at Musée Rodin, Paris. Peter Phillips, Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup, employed nude tones and a natural glow to create simplistic, pure makeup looks that dominated the runway, proving that Dior Beauty can be sustainably conscious without compromising quality. Paired with Dior’s existing perfumes, such as La Colle Noir, which embraces a sweet, floral scent, its irrefutable that Dior can utilise nature’s advantages whilst avoiding exploitation. With carefully considered products across each and every sector, we can’t wait to see what Dior does next.

Schiaparelli

A chapel-style setting complete with flaunting figures of angels dancing along the ceiling was the perfect precursor to Schiaparelli’s surrealist Spring 2022 Couture Collection. Sticking to the outlandish style that Schiaparelli has been praised for since its establishment in the 1930s, Daniel Rosebury- the designer of the collection- said he looked to galaxies far away for inspiration, even deeming the collection ‘Planet Schiaparelli’. The gold metal heads for handbags and the futuristic spaceship-style earrings were reminiscent of recent Sci-Fi cinema, such as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

While the entire show was equally exuberant and eccentric, there was one medusa-style attire that had everyone talking. The outfit looked as though it came straight from a Sci-Fi movie, as it created the illusion that the model was growing luxurious gold tree branches, encrusted in colourful gemstones, from her body.

The futuristic allure of the show wasn’t exclusive to the runway, however. As the show’s front row guest, Kanye West, understood Schiaparelli’s memo of mystery as he hid behind an all-black mask hiding his face entirely.

Dior

Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s current creative director, made the beauty of human creation and connection the message behind her Haute Couture SS22 collection. The hand-embroidered sequined tights, waistcoats and gowns worn by models from Chloe Oh to Rachel Marx were made to represent the teamwork behind the carefully detailed garments.

Dior’s eveningwear collection saw glamorous black ball gowns perfect for a modern princess. But, not only was Dior’s collection fit for royalty, it was witnessed by royalty, as Lady Amelia Windsor and Beatrice Borromeo sat along the front row of Dior’s Haute Couture show beside fashion royalty Cara Delevinge.

Chiuri’s ode to human creation and togetherness didn’t stop at her garments. The models who walked the show were illuminated by the colourful artwork surrounding them in the show’s setting of a reinvented gallery, showcasing works by Madhvi and Manu Parekh. Demonstrating the amazement of human ability and creation in all of its forms.

Azzaro

Opening Azzaro’s live stream show, both male and female models such as America Gonzalez and Jules Baco emerged from a curious outdoor setting where trees were replaced with white bollards and a paved runway slithered between uncut grass.

The mysterious setting complimented designer Olivier Theysken’s mystifying collection, which saw evening wear like suits and gowns reimagined in liquid silver silk and dripping in sequins. The designer admitted his love for all things shiny and his Haute Couture SS22 show was the epitome of this love.

Ulyana Sergeenko

It may be the 2020s, but the 1920s have made a return in Russian designer Ulyana Sergeenko’s Spring 2022 Couture Collection. With flapper dresses dazzling in sequined art-deco and feather embellishments. The collection was copied and pasted from Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby.

The digital show setting saw models illuminated by a single spotlight against a cherry red catwalk, as the show began with a model blowing a whistle to signify the show’s commencement. Sergeenko ensured a fun and playful start to the year with models peering behind the curtain showcasing sequined headpieces, encapsulating the playful energy of the 1920s.
