A return to the skinny brow is always met with controversy, particularly after the victims of the last hype attempted to thicken their eyebrows to acclimate to the thick brow trend. However, Vivienne Westwood is proving you don’t have to tweeze to get the look, a little bit of concealer and an eyebrow pencil can give you the defined, french flapper brow.

Bald Heads At YZY

Kanye has been very controversial this season for many reasons… which we won’t go into right now. Still, his futuristic brand YZY has roped in with the intergalactic beauty we’ve been getting on the runway this fall. Bald heads, usually worn alongside no eyebrows or makeup, were sported down the runway. The makeup artist behind the domes is of course the always cool Isamaya FFrench, and we’ll be interested to see if we get more bald heads as the seasons go on.

Decadent Beauty At SCHIAPARELLI

The models at Schiaparelli SS23 donned decadent beauty down the runway signalling the return to old Hollywood beauty we’ve seen crop up this season. Bold lips in intense reds, lined lips, light but refined eyeliner… all perfect with the gold accents that are equally as popular this season.

Lined Lips At Rui

The good people down at Rui decided to go for a rawer, less refined beauty direction this season. Bluntly lined dark lips with no lipstick, a classic 90s throwback, were extremely popular here and at a few others in Paris and matched the raw glamour trend well as an easy way to dress up a simple beauty look.

Untouched Beauty At Awake Mode

Perhaps the most notable trend this year is the fresh-face glamour we’ve been seeing everywhere from London to Paris to Milan. Perfect, glowing skin was seen across runways, and we’re sure this trend will continue into the winter.

Intense Liner At Lous Vuitton

Julia fox era eyeliner is here to stay! intense eye looks weren’t as popular in Paris compared to the other fashion weeks, but they certainly had their moment. Models at Louis Vuitton wore thick eyeliner looks that ended in a cat eye, perhaps another sign of our return to old Hollywood inspired looks.

Scene hair at Junya Watanabe

After the whispers of raccoon hair, we knew a scene resurgence was on our hands, and this season it’s nowhere as obvious as Junya Watanabe. Spiked-up dyed hair with intense side partings sweeping across the eye were all spotted on the models at the SS23 shows and we can say with almost complete certainty that the side parting is in again.

Versace SS23

Gothic goddess seemed to be the reigning aesthetic at the Versace SS23 show with intense purples, pinks and blacks taking centre stage. The show featured flattering silhouettes and a diverse selection of textures such as leather fringe, lace. The models sported a variety of beauty looks from dark, smokey eye looks to purple lips. Star of The Simple Life and all-round1 socialite Paris Hilton closed the show in a glimmering pink dress with fingerless gloves and a veil – that’s hot.

Dolce & Gabbana SS23

Kim Kardashian has had a torrid relationship with fashion, some live for her and some want her dead, but this fashion week Kim K has been elevated to muse as she was projected above the runway as the models walked down. Tight dresses, skirts and catsuits in blacks, silver and nude were strutted down the runway with several sheer elements that seemed to be very popular this season. Models wore the classic feline flick that D&G always go for.

Diesel SS23

Diesel is back with their vaguely sexual blow-up humanoid dolls for another killer runway. Creative director Glenn Martens has made a name for himself as a boundary-pushing artist and this runway was no different. Featuring shredded maxi dresses, trench coats, everyone’s favourite new mini skirt and a ton of denim and leather, this collection has already started making waves online with the likes of Kanye West reposting it. Several models were painted completely in glitter whilst others appeared to have a little blood on them, a general grungy vibe influenced the beauty.

Cavalli SS23

Models at the Roberto Cavalli show strutted down a glistening black stage wearing odes to old Hollywood. Whilst there was the use of animal print and catsuits, the majority of the collection featured hourglasses silhouettes in the form of shift dresses, silk slips, frilly blouses and geometric cuts.

Boss SS23

Since the dawn of remote working, the question of what to wear to work has been a daunting one, but Boss’s newest collection has a few suggestions. Baggy trench coats, long blazers, oversized suit trousers and slicked hair were all featured, with a turn-of-the-century Patrick Batemen look appearing to be popular. Naomi Campbell and Future both walked the show, as Boss ambassadors alongside the likes of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Beiber, and Tik Tok star Khaby Lame

Moschino SS23

Moschino’s newest collection is camp and glamour in equal measure. Large inflatables and wacky patterns and colours adorned classic silhouettes – this bubbly, retro collection is not one we will forget soon!

Prada SS23

Prada newest runway has two main focuses, diversity and grunge as a record number of gender non-conforming models debuted at Prada. Models wore large black eyelashes that shadowed their face as they strutted down the simple catwalk in grey uniform-like dresses and catsuits, brown crumpled dresses, silver blues silk slips, and sheer dresses.

Tod’s SS23

Tod’s newest collection is a very neutral one. Blacks, whites, browns, blacks and tans were the focal colours at the show as models wore sophisticated trenches, suits, dresses and baggy coats. Carla Bruni and Naomi Campbell closed the show in classic 80s supermodel manor, with drama!

Gucci SS23

At Gucci, this season’s biggest accessory was the twin. Identical models strutted down the catwalk holding hands in various designs from a classic tailored suit with stocking-inspired trousers to floral dresses with embellished sunglasses. Whilst the collection was diverse, it is clear that there are two features that’ll be very popular this season, and that’s futuristic sunglasses and a good suit.

DSquared2 SS23

Dsquared2 collection was very bright and fun, with models sporting clashing patterns and colours and lots of layering. Tailoring was also spotted as certain models sported striped colourful suits that played the line between smart and psychedelic.

Bluemarine SS23

Denim ruled at Bluemaries spring summer collection – and the rest of Milan fashion week… Flowing maxi dresses and tight, distressed denim were all spotted at the show as well as an insane denim cross top that we’re putting it in our wish list as we speak.

Cormio SS23

Cormio’s usual whimsy was personified in the young children that walked alongside models at their Milan fashion week show. Surrounded by books, toys and teddies, models wore colourful, frilly designs as playful jazz score played.

Avavav SS23

One model falling is a faux pas, all of them doing it is a fashion sensation. Models at the Avavav show donned futuristic glasses, furry boots, strapless one-pieces and lots of silver glitters and each took a turn falling on the catwalk.

The Belgian designer was inspired by her own experience trying to find clothes that looked good and fit well, tired of the lifeless brown and beige garments available for plus-size women, Ester set out to design clothes that say ‘we exist too!’

Manas’ goal was beyond achieved at her recent FW22 show, where ruched materials in an explosion of hyper-vivid colours were worn by diverse and inspiring women who brought a fresh perspective on who high fashion is ‘for’. From Paloma Elsesser to Ariish Wol, the label dedicates itself to providing opportunities for women the fashion industry have ignored in the past. Aside from those on the runway, industry experts like Amina Muaddi and Ajshe Berishaj have recently been spotted in Manas’ sexy knits and colourful dresses, giving the label the recognition and credibility it deserves.

But, self-empowerment isn’t the only ethos Ester Manas has dedicated itself to, taking on another pressing issue in the fashion industry, the label is devoted to making sustainability a priority. By using deadstock materials to produce their stunning designs and creating them just 20 minutes away from their warehouse, the label is perfect for dressing fiercely, yet, responsibly this summer.

A highlight of their available products is the label’s heart-shaped clutch. While inclusive and sustainable, no label is complete without an ‘it bag’ to match, and Manas’ blush pink purse might just be the bag we fall for this season. The Queen’s Gambit star is certainly the queen of dramatic outfits. Customary to her previous events, Anya Taylor -Joy wore a custom Dior Haute Couture gown. The cream shaded gown was bareback accompanied by a dramatic yellow train that gloved her hands and brought grandeur to the ensemble. The inverted neckpiece detail to the halter neck added a kick of regality. The outfit was paired with earrings from Tiffany and Co along with a Marilyn Monroe-inspired hair up-do.

Kerry Washington

2021 has been corsets galore! Much to the vintage charm that it has brought back, Kerry Washington added a glamorous touch to the red carpet in her custom Etro satin gown. The torso cincher exterior corset paired in the same hue as the cowl necked gown adds an exquisite touch to the outfit paired with ear danglers, bracelet, and rings from De Beers.

Awkwafina

The versatile actress after witnessing the recent success of her movie Shang-Chi presented the Emmys in a delicate turquoise gown by Monique Lhuillier. Awkwafina looked radiant in the high-neck, deep neck gown enveloped in organza lure. The gown features translucent bishop sleeves accompanied with minimal danglers and a blue envelope clutch.

Billy Porter

Billy Porter always makes a signature entry to the red carpet, be it The Met Gala or The Emmy’s. For this glam-studded event, Porter decided to highlight this simple skin-hugging high neck top with a pair of black gloves and a pair of abstract WINGS!  The wings looked like a variation of origami in layers of pleated art settled at his arms.  The all-black look was completed with a larger-than-life diamond and emerald encrusted choker, ornate ear cuffs and rings from Ashi Studios, and Lorraine Schwartz.

MJ Rodriguez

Another moment at the Emmy’s, where MJ Rodriguez made history as the first transwoman to bag an Emmy nomination will go down in history etching her ethereal look. Rodriquez mesmerized the audience in her flared turquoise charm that exuded from her Vintage Atelier Versace gown. The asymmetric neckline and one-sided shoulder accentuate her toned arms, giving off a magical spin to the look. The Pose started posed in her tailored-to-fit gown paired with turquoise strappy heels and accessories from Bvlgari.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo’s Louis Vuitton gown is like a sudden energetic kick from caffeine. Donning statement gowns have been a signature to Erivo’s style in several events this year. The white mermaid leather gown paired with offbeat combinations of blue, green, and hints of white is a breath of fresh air. The halter neck and bareback highlights her toned arms and waist, complete with a diamond choker from David Coin.

Angela Bassett

The critically acclaimed actress Angela Bassett, who recently unveiled her wax figured at Madame Tussauds graced the red carpet in a show-stopping outfit. The strapless Greta Constantine Befani gown from RW 2022 was electrifying. The striking detailed pink ruffles elevated the neckline and sufficed an extra hint of glamour throughout the dress creating an hourglass illusion. The look was completed with diamond drop earrings by Melograno and black platform heels.

Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi looked like royalty in her lime-colored Dior gown. The chic midi gown features an off-shoulder neckline wrapped in chiffon delicateness perfectly draped at her arms. The voluminous A-line fit and flare skirt with a matching green belt brought in an extravagance complete with a dazzling Cartier three-stranded gold beaded neckpiece, earrings, and a pair of brown leather heels.

Kaley Cuoco

Kaley Cuoco looked chirpy in her neon yellow custom Vera Wang gown for the Emmy’s event. The dress is high slit in the middle with ruched detailing featuring a sweetheart plunging neckline with a train touching the floor. The spaghetti straps were embellished with artificial neon flowers that gave the outfit an extra wow factor. The look was completed with a bare neck and a pair of drop earrings accompanied with matching neon strappy heels.

Moses Ingram

Moses Ingram packed a hue of subtlety in her Christian Siriano solid olive gown. The gown is a simple mermaid silhouette featuring an asymmetric flared sleeve train emerging from the neckline. The look is accompanied by slick middle-parted hair-do embellished with rhinestones and a ponytail highlighted with silver chains complete with a pair of diamond danglers.

So that is day one complete of the first-ever digital London Fashion Week and it’s fair to say we have been amazed. Yes, the catwalk has gone, (COVID-19, we’re looking at you) but it did not stop the LFW festivities. Well, put it like this, to say we were spoilt rotten is an understatement!

Well, here you have it. A round-up on all the events, coming to you straight from the comfort of your sofa. Earlier in the year, the British Fashion Council announced that its biannual London Fashion Week Men’s would make history by becoming a digital-only and gender-neutral mix of both men’s and women’s wear.

Today we experienced a jam-packed day of all kinds of multi-media content including virtual showrooms, interviews, mini-films and podcasts to bring the fashion, culture and technology worlds together. Giving the chance for designers to share their experiences and thoughts over the last few months. James Massiah: Clio Corset To kick things off James Massiah, spoken word artist, opened up LFW with a poem to reminisce on the manic few months we’ve all been through and to get us excited for the future. “Looking forward to a lot of things when this thing is done. Bless those that I know I won’t see in the summer sun”, he said. In the two-minute poem he also made reference to the current BLM protests in response to the death of George Floyd in saying “Couple statutes in the sea, and then some statutes they got wrong and when that’s all said and done, let’s throw a party or two.” If one thing is for sure, he gave us a boost of optimism for romance, partying and hope for the rest of the year to come. What a way to kick off the show. Check out the full video Nicholas Daley: ‘The Abstract Truth Film’Showing off his Fall 2020 Menswear, Nicolas Daley really has a knack for leaving you speechless. And boy he did just that. His real panache for fashion combined with his taste in music gave us a live performance to kick start the show with three young musicians- Rago Foot, Kwake Bass and Wu-Lu- experimenting with jazz with psychedelic rock. The energy was second to none. Daley’s collection took inspiration from the 1970s, black abstract art movement and Afrofuturism with a line featuring kaki kimonos, layered tartan jackets and 70’s shades. We really didn’t know where to look but were quite amazed. Check out our favourite pieces from the collection here Lou Dalton English menswear fashion designer, Lou Dalton was joined on a Zoom chat by Gordon Richardson (designer and co-founder of LFW Men’s), Stewart Williamson (stylist of Lou Dalton) and Mark Neville (photographer) to discuss her latest collection and her lockdown motivations.

Lou’s LMFW AW202 collection is summed up by her as “quiet noise”. Her clothing is described as contemporary yet timeless. The simplicity to her designs are eye-catching but versatile to wear as experiments with layers, tweedy jackets double-faced wool and checked patterns. Now that’s officially stepping into Autumn. Check out the collection here Ahluwalia ‘Jalebi’ Moving swiftly on, we were taken to ‘Jalebi’, Priya Ahluwalia’s 3D VR photography exhibition and name of the designer’s latest book. For AW20, Priya designed a 360-degree exhibition, photographed by Laurence Ellis, which explored what it’s like to be a young, mixed heritage person living in Britain in 1965. It allowed us to see through Ahluwalia’s eyes to understand her experiences of visiting Southall, Britain’s first Punjabi community. See some of our favourite pieces from the exhibition hereWhy Are We Compelled to Create? We don’t want to give anything away. But we were absolutely inspired listening to the voices of designers and creators talk about what London Fashion Week means to them. With designer Matteo Bigliardi simply and rightly putting it: “it’s all about freedom of expression, and freedom to create.” They also spoke up to share how they’re making their mark on the world; whether that be supporting efforts in sustainability, refugees or diversity. This event really was a much-needed breath of fresh air and optimism. Take a listen for yourself University of Westminster 2020 MA Menswear For this LFW this year’s graduates ‘show an eclectic mix of influences and approaches to the discipline of menswear.’ The pieces channelled everything from spacesuit vibes to full-on glitz and glamour to detailed and colourful patchworking. They really explored different dynamics of menswear fashion and we were not left disappointed. A real exciting sight for the eyes. Check out our favourite pieces from their collection here Robyn Lynch supported by Rapha We all got a little bit emotional watching Robyn Lynch’s ‘time capsule’ home movie, which documents how life has changed since the COVID-19 lockdown, definitely something to show your grandchildren. “As a nation, our physical health has been attacked, our mental health eroded, our economy battered, and our society put to the ultimate test.” She recognised the struggle but was very quick to acknowledge the good in how times like these can be used to our advantage. FLETCHERWe joined in with an Instagram live with fashion designer and Menswear Artistic Director for Fiorucci, Daniel Fletcher who spoke to British Vogues Miss Vogue Editor Naomi Pike about his new AW20 collection and what’s up next for him in fashion. In his latest collection, Fletcher really came through with the pastels, panelling, clean tailoring and a lot of flares. You really think fashion-forward with this collection and we are all for it. Take a look and shop the collection here. Chalayan Cyprus born fashion designer Hussein Chalayan is best known for his uses of film, installations, dance and forms. But his latest collection featured a mix of quilt, monochrome and simplistic printed pieces. The collection still featured classic Chalayan signature looks including strapping and heavy shouldered coats and jackets. He really experimented with block colours and contrasts. Certainly a bold collection. Here are some of our favourite looks. And the day doesn’t end there. Upcoming we’ve got conversations with Fashion Director Bruce Pask, a chat with gentleman blogger and creative consultant Matthew Zorpas and ending the day in a discussion with ICEBERG and River Island. As we move into the 2020s, although it is fair to say that it has probably not been the best start to the new decade, we are approaching various anniversaries of pop albums that not only spark nostalgia but provide a refreshing contrast to the music we currently hear on the radio. One particular album is facing its 10thanniversary this June: Xtina’s criminally underrated Bionic.

Following the release of her ultra-successful third album, Back to Basics, spawning the smash hits “Aint No Other Man” and “Candyman”, Xtina decided she wanted to explore a more futuristic and innovative sound, originally signified with the release of her “Keeps Gettin’ Better” alongside her greatest hits compilation of the same name.

The Bionic era was kicked off with the release of the album’s lead single – “Not Myself Tonight” – which saw Christina entirely depart from all her previous characterizations. The song itself, a powerful, exhilaratingly intense and completely electronic sex anthem, is accompanied by an even more provocatively raw and sensual music video, displaying Christina in an array of tight-fitting, figure-flaunting BDSM-inspired outfits. The aesthetics were a clear transition into a new hypersexualised era and signposted the upcoming album’s vibe. Explicit sexuality and confidence exude in nearly every song on Bionic, with songs like “Sex For Breakfast” and “Desnudate” (‘get naked’ in Spanish) most impressively radiating the Pop Princess’ erotic reincarnation. With shockingly raunchy lyrics such as, “Whisper all your fetishes inside my ear”, it is impossible to refrain from seductively succumbing to the erotic allure/force of these neoteric electropop bops.

The album, unfortunately, faced an abundance of criticism upon its release, with some comparing Christina’s new sound to that of the newly-emerging electropop sensation Lady Gaga, and others blaming the album’s lack of commercial (but certainly not controversially brilliant) success on the fact that the “Dirrty” singer waited four years between album cycles, potentially losing momentum she had generated with Back to Basics.

Xtina herself infamously stated that she believed the album “was too ahead of its time for some people”, and I cannot help but wonder if had Christina decided to embrace her eroticism in this decade rather than the last, in a time of post-modern feminism, sexual liberation and destruction of outdated societal norms, would the album’s fate have been entirely different?

As Bionic turns 10 this June, we should take it as an opportunity to appreciate the artistic journey that led Christina to this accomplished, sensual and sassy set of sounds/tracks, as well as our own inevitable and entirely justifiable hair whips, struts and strides, even if they are only in our living rooms.
