Her blue fur get up was a vintage Lacroix haute couture piece from FW 2002 and fell nothing short of Badgalriri’s signature style. Elevated with stacked silver necklaces and black leather gloves, she stole the show.

Co-host for the evening, Maya Jama dazzled us as she wore a stunning olive-green gown with cross over detailing at the top and embroidered flowers at the front. The silk flowing train also included intricate embroidery along with a fishnet trim encapsulating Connor Ives as a designer as we see his unexpected fabric combinations and striking colours first hand.

Jourdan Dunn served us a head-to-toe leopard print moment with Dior. The model chanelled her inner black-cat energy with the cat-eye lashes, and showed off her legs with the micro shorts, perfectly accompanying the blazer and long black gloves. The bakerboy cap finished off the look with a British essence for the British Fashion Awards.

Ashley Graham walked the carpet in a gorgeous black dress from David Koma’s first collection for Blumarine. The black dress included a sheer train to finish it off and a structured bodice showing off her figure. Graham, who had her VS debut earlier this year, finished the look off with a slicked back bun and all silver jewellery.

The stunning Halle Bailey wore a bespoke Ellie Misner dress and channelled her inner Disney princess on the red carpet. She arrived with a light and airy presence as she graced us in a couture piece draped in pearls and holographic cut outs mirroring when she starred as The Little Mermaid.

Alex Consani became the first transgender woman to win the Model of The Year award last night and as Voir puts it – made style accessible to women everywhere. She walked the carpet looking gorgeous in a Dilara Findikoglu moment and celebrated backstage in style after thanking the transgender models who came before her, paving the way for Consani to flourish.

Julia Fox joined Consani in supporting emerging designer Dilara Findikoglu, as she broke the internet in the custom dress. The white floor-length gown included sheer cut outs showing off Fox’s figure, and styled with a wet-look up do and icy makeup to tie everything together.

Chlöe Bailey (left) is pictured looking glamorous in an Atsuko Kudo black gown with a red accent in the bust area. The latex ensemble created a raw feminine energy, the pop of red giving depth to the outfit and her hair matching the vibe as it effortlessly shaped her face. The look was finished off with a silver diamond necklace as we were left with an undeniable serve on the carpet.

Simone Ashley, Bridgerton star stepped onto the carpet in a baby pink, strapless Prada gown. The coquette dress had different levels to it; from a short front to a long train at the back and was finished off with a matching pink bow on the bodice. Styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Simone Ashley for sure had her girly moment on the runway in that dress, along with a slicked back hairstyle which was giving an iconic pixie cut at the front.

Ming Lee Simmons wore an undeniably daring look to the awards last night as she was pictured in a sheer chainmail dress. The floor length number was figure hugging and sleekly complemented by jet straight hair in a half up fashion and incredibly well contoured make-up. The look gave her a luxuriously fearless presence on the runway.

Munroe Bergdorf left Voir nothing short of speechless as she dominated the runway in a Patrick McDowell gown. The structured silhouette on the bodice broke off into a bubble skirt and was accompanied by a luxurious train graciously following her. The statement dress created a memorable bridal-like vibe which was sophisticated paired with dramatic flair.

1. Christian Dior 2011 Fall Couture Show

At the Christian Dior 2011 Fall show, McGrath demonstrated her unique ability to create extravagant looks while stillmatching Dior’s overarching theme of celebrating ultra-femininity. The bedazzled look was sprawled all over Pinterest and other forms of social media.

2. Givenchy 2014 Spring Show

In McGrath’s work, we can how she utilises jewellery and accessories as makeup. We saw an incredible example of this during the Givenchy 2014 Spring show, where her models’ faces were completely covered in a dazzling bluemask with red lips. Their eyes were covered by mesh, making for a darker – almost haunting – look.

It seems McGrath works well with blue, as another one of her most influential makeup looks of all time featured this brilliant blue design running down one side of the model’s face. This abstract look accentuates all the higher pointson the model’s face using blue paint, resulting in a vibrant, lifted look.

3. Rihanna – W Magazine September 2016

McGrath also did Rihanna’s makeup for W Magazine’s September 2016 issue. The silver jewellery gave Rihanna’s skin a blueish tinge, while the exquisite gold ornament brightened her eye area, beautifully contrasting her brightred lip.

4. Versace Fall 2023

Versace’s 2023 show brought back ultra-bold eye makeup through thick black wings, topped with a blinding innercorner highlight. This striking look caught mass media attention and many influencers recreate this look in their own way. @jessiscg in TikTok went for a more subtle version of this look.

5. Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring Summer 2023

McGrath was also behind the iconic Doja Cat look at this January’s Schiaparelli show. The look took 5 hours to complete as McGrath’s team hand-applied 30,000 Swarovski crystals to the rapper’s face, arms and head.

Beauty guru Anish Tamang recreated this stunning look in a video posted to his TikTok, pairing the makeup look withan all-black outfit, blazer and skirt combo.

While her makeup looks were show-stopping, her career doesn’t stop there. In 2015 she went on to launch Pat McGrath labs, boasting a range of base products, eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks and more. This luxury collection has been one of the best sellers at Selfridges since its launch.

Both Chiuri and Dior have a long history with India and this was embraced for the collaboration through work relations and friendship. She has a close friendship with Karishma Swali, the director of Chanakya atelier and Chanakya school of craft. Chiuri first began working with the atelier two decades ago and the collection relies on their mastery of embroidery and traditional Indian techniques, while putting emphasis on empowering female Indian artisans and their inventiveness.

Dior’s relationship with India goes even further back, with former artistic director Marc Bohan
travelling to India in 1962 to showcase looks in Mumbai and Delhi.

Chiuri paid homage to the initial meeting by incorporating a quote found in the archives, ‘L’Union fait la force’, meaning ‘Union is strength’ into the collection, visualising how working together creates fresh connective energies, like combining classic Dior silhouettes with traditional Indian designs.

The show took place at the Gateway of India monument in Mumbai, which was built in the early 20th century to commemorate the British monarchy’s first-ever visit to India. The arch is a metaphor for the fusion of cultures and traditions. Erected in front of the arch was a 14-meter-tall Toran, an embroidered fabric traditionally hung at the entrance to welcome guests into your home. It featured elephants, tigers, and peacocks and took 35,000 hours of handwork and encompassed 25 craft techniques. The Chanakya ateliers and School of Craft worked together over several months to create it using phulkari, french knotting, kantha, and mirror work techniques. After emerging from the Toran, models paraded between dozens of gold candles and ornate arrangements of marigolds.

The 99 models, with many being Indian, wore bright-coloured silks, traditional Indian cuts, boleros, gold and silver, and sari-inspired skirts. ‘Zardozi’, metal embroidery, and ‘Ek Taar’, elaborate embroidery using a single thread, adorned the outfits.

Celebrities also came out in force, from legendary cricketers to famous Hindi actresses.

‘From the New Look to the New Era’

Dior’s signature silhouettes – Maison Dior will always hold a special place in the French capital. It is here that the ‘New Look’ was born, a set of romantic, hyperfeminine- fin de siècle- silhouettes that evoke the clothes worn by Christian Dior’s mother. The development of structured heavy-wear fabrics led to a particular post-war fashion period for women. 

Since becoming Dior’s first female creative director in 2016, Maria Grazia Chiuri has continuously pushed the sartorial envelope for the House, best known for its nip-waist accentuated busts. Chiuri has now unveiled a fresh ready-to-wear collection that reflects on the conditioning of women throughout history.

This creative director is bringing Dior’s New Look into ‘The Next Era- Chiuri made a point of only hiring female photographers for this campaign. The AW22/23 ready-to-wear campaign features portraits of women amidst a dramatic red backdrop.

Chiuri’s collections are situated on the cusp of Dior’s history. The garments and accessories take inspiration from women’s fashion past and present- pieces that blend the classic Dior aesthetics with a modern flair. 

This show’s title comes from Mariella Bettineschi, in which the Italian artist showcased large-scale portraits of women in paintings dating from the 16th to the 19th century.

Embracing Bettineshi’s male gaze reversal, the ardent feminist Chiuri has utilized Dior’s antique aesthetic as a reminder of the truth about women’s struggle throughout history, and the modernisation of the classic Dior silhouette featured on this year’s runway signifies the milestones made in women’s suffrage history. 

Models América González, Maryel Uchida, Steinberg, and Philyne Mercedes are featured in the campaign, styled by Elin Svahn.

The cut, stark eyes that face the camera symbolise the questioning of the conditions that have condemned women past and present. The gaze is reversed to suggest a different interpretation of art history. Through the artistic arrangement, materials, and silhouettes, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s concepts come to life through Niedermair’s photography. Chiuri reconstructs the relationship between body and garment in a performative manner.

Dior’s iconic Bar jacket was reimagined in structure and tech innovation, regulating the body’s temperature and warming or cooling it as needed. An illuminated criss-cross bodysuit also followed, which controlled its wearer’s body temperature.

The iconic Roger Vivier for Dior pump was reimagined in Fall/Winter 2022, using technical fabric instead of leather. Several items, such as belts and corsets, were used, giving everyday wear a futuristic and versatile twist.

A collection of skirts and dresses exhibited Chirui’s recognizable touch from a new perspective. An elevated approach was achieved by reinventing pleated skirts like the Grisaille from men’s clothing; technical knitwear featured embroidery on waterproof materials, gloves, Moto jackets, and bright stockings reminiscent of biker accessories were paired with gowns.

As a nod to Chiuri’s rebellious yet respectful nature, she used a print from a backdrop of a portrait of Christian Dior to create a new print, seen on an oversized coat with couture gloves.

Laurent Kleitman, President and Chief Executive Officer at Parfums Christian Dior, claimed that the brand has ‘put flowers at the spearhead’ of their sustainability strategy to ‘preserve their heritage and develop their presence in the ecosystem.’ Partnering with the world’s largest agricultural campus, Hectar, to launch a scalable education programme focused on regenerative flower farming by 2023, Dior is shaping a kinder future via natural raw materials and a carefully considered value chain.

Most recently, Dior Haute Couture launched its Autumn-Winter 2022-2023 Collection, taking place on July 4th at Musée Rodin, Paris. Peter Phillips, Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup, employed nude tones and a natural glow to create simplistic, pure makeup looks that dominated the runway, proving that Dior Beauty can be sustainably conscious without compromising quality. Paired with Dior’s existing perfumes, such as La Colle Noir, which embraces a sweet, floral scent, its irrefutable that Dior can utilise nature’s advantages whilst avoiding exploitation. With carefully considered products across each and every sector, we can’t wait to see what Dior does next.

Off-White

The Off-White show this week served as a celebration of the life of former creative director and founder Virgil Abloh, who passed away last year. Abloh was one of the pioneers and great modern innovators of the fashion industry, and this collection followed suit, offering a glimpse into the space age and allowing everyone to dream of a bright future. A huge amount of variety was on show from minimalist streetwear inspired looks of oversized jumpers, puffer jackets and hoodies that are staples of the brand to high end couture, a pool in which Off-White has never really dipped its toe into.

It needn’t matter though, as the multitude of layered, oversized dresses, gloriously gigantic hats and bombastic prints and colours all felt completely effortless, as if the brand had always been a high-end couture behemoth. As one of Virgil’s final works before his passing this is one beautiful legacy to leave behind.

Vaquera

Themes of punk and rebellion ran through the DNA of this show and onto the catwalk too. Pretty much everything on show was oversized, creating a casual yet edgy feel that was a perfect blend of 80s and Y2K styles. Stone washed denim was paired with sleek leather for an ultimate grunge inspired look, and loud prints from leopard print to skulls to comic inspired art added an artistic edge to proceedings.

Nanushka

There was a quiet vulnerability and intimacy in Nanushka’s show. Foregoing the traditional catwalk of models walking up and down for mere seconds, the models of Nanushka’s show stepped onto spinning platforms and stood perfectly still for what felt like an age, inviting viewers to stare and really take in the atmosphere of the show and the craftsmanship of the clothes. This intimacy translated through into the clothes with a gentle sense of femininity running through the collection with pristinely cut suits with deep necks and flared trousers in light browns and baby blues being standout looks from the show.

Di Petsa

The theme of femininity continued with Di Petsa, whose show and collection centred around the themes of motherhood. With the runway thematically set with moody lighting, water on the floor and remnants of foliage making it appear the show was set in a Garden of Eden of sorts, clothes which embraced the raw nature of being a mother graced the runway. Gentle fabrics comprising of ruffles made up a bulk of the collection, putting an emphasis on comfort first and foremost. The raw nature of the show became even more apparent with models carrying babies down the runway as well as clips of mothers feeding their children spliced in between. The collection showcased the power and beauty of motherhood in a wonderfully real nature.

Christian Dior

The future is now. That was the message Christian Dior was sending this week. Set in an enormous room with the walls lined with classical portraits, you’d be forgiven for thinking the show would kick off with some classically designed haute couture. Instead, a glow in the dark bodysuit was the first piece on the runway and what followed were a barrage of futuristic looking pieces meshed with clothes from older ages. Slick high vis jackets were paired with flowing lace skirts, arm gloves that wouldn’t look out of place on the outfit of a racing driver accompanied sophisticated body-hugging dresses, and huge Matrix style glasses made models look as if they were wearing high-tech visors.

As the show carried on though, the looks gradually began to regress through time and the futuristic elements gradually faded away. The precise cuts of tailoring that have been so prevalent throughout the 20^th and 21^st Centuries took up the middle portion of the show, with elegant printed overcoats, velvet two-piece suits and shining maxi skirts bringing the room back to the present. Soon after, time regressed again with dramatic sweeping dresses made of lace, swaying elegantly around the models as they walked, transporting everyone back to the age of the ballroom, an age more befitting of the setting the show was housed in.

Christian Dior managed to combine the past, present and future in sublime fashion and in doing so celebrated the history of the craft whilst also looking forward to its future.

Ottolinger

Models made their way around a twisting padded maze for Ottolinger in a show that felt futuristic in a distinctively Y2K manner. Lashings of smooth velvet slinked around the maze along with puffer jackets and coats that didn’t look too dissimilar to the maze walls and a fantastically slick set of suits. Huge shoes finished off many of the outfits on display and enhanced the vintage otherworldly feel of the show, with the collection as a whole echoing the fashion of The Matrix. The only thing missing was an appearance from Keanu.

Saint Laurent

If there’s one thing that can always be guaranteed from a Saint Laurent show, it is extremely high glamour and extremely high sophistication and this show was no different. With a beautiful backdrop of an illuminated Eiffel Tower in the background, the glamour was only heightened even more. That unmistakable Saint Laurent style was present from the start with uniquely chic touches on blazers, giving them hugely oversized dropped shoulders, decadent fur coats and shimmering thigh high boots to add subtle levels of sensuality to proceedings.

It was a fantastically elegant high end display, the kind that has always come to be expected from Saint Laurent.

Didu

Rather than stage a traditional catwalk show Didu instead produced a short film showcasing their looks for the season and it’s safe to say it had a dystopian feel of sorts. With elements of neo noir with a futuristic biker riding down a moonlit highway, a fantastical overgrown forest and a rather unnerving last supper of sorts, the film was a journey through varying scenarios which showcased the diverse and rich nature of the brand.

Rochas

As smoke poured into the studio and a foreboding dance track began to play there was a somewhat sinister edge to the Rochas show. Not that that’s a bad thing though as the clothes on display also matched this eerie atmosphere by appearing quite dark and almost villain-like themselves. Dark, leather coats, dresses and hats were combined with dramatic make up and oversized nails creating looks that weren’t too far removed from the queen of evil herself: Maleficent.

Tailoring laden with jewels shimmered through the clouds of smoke and, combined with unique shoulder cuts which bloomed outwards like a blossoming flower, added a gentle touch amongst the smoke and dramatic music.

Dries Van Noten

Dries Van Noten presented a dreamlike paradise to the fashion world this week. There was an astonishing array of fantastically vibrant prints spread across coats, tops, skirts and blazers, ranging from classic zebra and cow prints to much more psychedelic patterns meshing colours and swirling around the garments in hypnotically mesmerizing manners.

The insane levels of detail extended to accessories to with hand-stitched brooches in the shapes of crests being made up of vibrant colours swirling around each other like a kaleidoscope. Uniquely, the clothes themselves were also primarily displayed on mannequins rather than models and, taking things even further, the mannequins themselves were often patterned with the same prints as the clothes they were displaying. This created a blurring of lines of sorts between the clothes and the wearer.

Acne Studios

In a pristine white studio guests at this weeks Acne Studios show were sat in pits in the floor itself and watched as the models of the show slinked around them from above.

A particular highlight of the collection was its use of nightwear and loungewear inserted amongst the usual high-end pieces and looks. Massively oversized dressing gowns which drowned the models were paired up with equally oversized slippers creating an undoubtedly comfy look which stood at odds with the rest of the show. Who says extreme comfort can’t be extremely fashionable?

Balmain

Kicking the show off with a beautifully intimate dance routine before the models graced the runway, there was a tender atmosphere to Balmain’s presentation. Of course, this tenderness didn’t distract from the effortlessly cool styles that the fashion world has come to expect from Olivier Rousteing, whose love for distinct silhouettes, monochromatic palettes and sleek, modern theatricality was as present as ever.

A collection of the most pristine and purest whites led the show comprising of the unique tailoring structures that Rousteing has become known for, paired with flowing trousers, miniature bags and enormous boots that could have had their own gravitational pull.

These outfits had an almost angelic feel to them which wonderfully matched the gentle nature of the show’s opening performance. A bit of darker energy soon followed though with equally slick and futuristic black outfits fitted with metallic plates taking the audience from the skies to space and enormous coats of fur and that unique Olivier block colouring adding plenty of elegance and sophistication.

Coperni

Set in a spacious locker room with a soundtrack made to an emulate a radio broadcast there was a quiet sense of sexiness present in Coperni’s collection. There was plenty of flesh on display as thigh high boots and miniskirts exposed thighs, tops and dresses revealed shoulders and some uniquely cut blazers highlighted parts of the body. All of this was handled tastefully though and with a sense of sophistication showcasing a strong level of maturity.

Gauchere

Gauchere presented a mature and sophisticated collection this week. The French brand showcased traditionally cut tailoring in a variety of cool neutrals from brown to black to beige, giving the collection a fresh neutrality. Blazers and coats oozed sophistication whilst skirts flowed to mesmerizing degrees.

Paul Smith

One of the icons of British fashion, Paul Smith is still creating collections that are full of charm, whimsy and wonder. Continuing to showcase the signature prints and patterns that have become so synonymous with the brand and designer, with this collection having a particular affinity for zigzags and psychedelics, the clothes all have a distinctly British feel to them that only Paul Smith is capable of achieving. A lush array of colours please the eyes as well with deep, brooding purples, fresh greens and passionate, vibrant reds leading the way and adding bursts of personality to the collection. Paul Smith is, as always, timeless, elegant and infectiously fun.

Lecavalier

Taking place in a dramatically lit studio there was a tense atmosphere to the Lecavalier show. At times the presentation almost felt like a western standoff of sorts with models passing by each other trading tense stares and gazing into the cameras in a similar way at the audience. The drama was equally present in the clothes too with dramatic colour combinations, oversized jumpers consisting of patterns that, again, wouldn’t be too far removed from a western, and a stunning coat made up of incredibly intricate twists and knots.

Rick Owens

The king of gothic theatricality, Rick Owens, returned to Paris this week with undoubtedly one of the most breathtakingly stunning shows of the season, if not the year, so far. Atmosphere, as always with Rick Owens, was immersive from the start with smoke machines billowing smoke onto the runway and even models carrying their own miniature versions with them, creating a swirling cloud of mysterious wonder. A sweeping orchestral score only added to the spectacle, making the presentation feel more like a huge Broadway performance than a runway show.

Of course, the clothes were spectacular as well. The silhouettes of pointed shoulders, dragging capes, huge hairdos and swirling dresses matched the atmosphere of the stage perfectly with the collection looking like it had come straight from a beautiful yet slightly twisted fairytale. It could be easy for a collection rooted in such drama to lack a certain sense of reality and soul but that was absolutely not the case here. Despite the high dreamlike state there was a warmth and soul to the collection that brought the entire presentation back to reality.

Isabel Marant

With a packed audience in attendance and a live performance accommodating the show there was a very playful and uplifting vibe to Isabel Marant’s presentation. Models strutted with vigor and fierce attitude to the dreamy soundtrack of the show and presented a collection of clothes that was equally playful to the setting they were in. Fluffy jumpers with striking patterns looked comfy and inviting whilst a whole host of colourful garments added to that feeling of wonder and whimsy that was already present. A highly uplifting presentation indeed.

Alexandre Vauthier

There was a rough elegance on display from Alexandre Vauthier this week. The video presented by the brand had a DIY energy to it that also emitted a rebellious punk energy which translated through to the collection itself. Each piece exuded a confident amount of attitude, evoking feelings not too far removed from the British punk movement of the 80s. Coats were decked out in various animal prints and would feel right at home amongst the stylings of last years Cruella, whilst glamourous dresses had dramatic fur necklines that, again, wouldn’t feel out of place worn by the monochromatic menace herself.

Loewe

With the runway space painted floor to ceiling in a chocolate brown and with multiple huge pumpkins scattered across the room there was an immediately surrealist nature to Loewe’s presentation. This surreal vibe extended massively to the clothes as well, with the entire collection having an Alice in Wonderland feel due to the sheer amount of whimsical and straight up head-turning pieces on display. Dresses that started off in a typically standard manner at the neck extended downwards into the shapes of cars at the waist, whilst others were shaped into giant, puckering lips at the chest before flowing down into an elegant and flowing trail. There were heels accessorized with humongous bows at the ankle and, speaking of heels, some were even put into dresses themselves with the heels nearly piercing out of the fabrics.

Amongst all of this surrealist content there was also a wide array of shapes and cuts that would seemingly be thought to be impossible when it comes to making clothing. But Loewe managed it all and created a compellingly trippy show that pushed the boundaries both of what fashion is and what it is truly capable of.

Issey Miyake

Japanese brand issey Miyake also presented a fairly surreal take on its collection this week, though to a more minimalized degree. As ever with Miyake subtlety was a strong point and the collection had a refreshingly down to earth vibe whilst also still being creative and pushing forward some unique prints and designs. Jumpers looked uber soft and comfy to the touch coming in a nice variety of cool neutrals and brighter colours such as purple, whilst coats were adorned with artistic prints looking as though they had been brushed on with a giant paintbrush.

Nina Ricci

In a playful and energetic presentation Nina Ricci asked its participants what it is that they feel makes them their most authentic selves. The celebration of embracing one’s authentic self and not being hindered by other’s opinions or doubts was an uplifting message and felt empowering too. The clothes on display complimented this message being bright in colour, with cool pastel pinks and blues, and by featuring some playful prints which added some extra dimension to outfits.

Jitrois

There was a definite space-age vibe emitting from Jitrois’ presentation this week. In a glitchy and distorted video presentation models were seen sporting shining silver dresses and tailoring that looked fit for a grand space adventure. A red leather getup consisting of jacket and trousers, whilst being distinctly contemporary, also had an air of futurism about it and looked effortlessly cool to boot. Space-age styled futuristic clothing is always interesting to see and Jitrois delivered a slick and cool take on the aesthetic.

Lutz Huelle

Traditional glamour was at the forefront of the collection from Lutz Huelle. Glamorous sophisticated dresses in a rainbow of primary colours lit up the presentation, with some darker, checkered tailoring serving as a nice contrast to the array of colours. Patchwork denim tops and jeans added a touch of casual everyday wear to proceedings, whilst still feeling distinctly elegant in its own way. Outfits were also accessorized with some stunning crystal jewels in the forms of lavish necklaces and dangling earrings, hammering home that traditional glamour in a suitably stylish way.

Yohji Yamamoto

With the runway framed by multiple luxurious crystal chandeliers there was an immediate sense of gothic drama to Yohji Yamamoto’s presentation. Of course, gothic theatricality is a known staple of Yamamoto’s work so it should be no surprise that the collection presented this week leaned heavily into the theming in a beautiful, almost sorrowful manner.

Yamamoto’s signature use of black was ever present, casting a gloriously gothic glow over the room. Layered, billowing dresses that swayed beautifully as the models walked down the runway emitted a wonderful sense of drama, and the expert tailoring of blazer jackets and coats that are staples of Yohji’s work added a dark sense of sophistication to the show, as should be expected from Yamamoto’s work. Many of the outfits presented felt fairytale-like in nature which gave the collection a wonderful sense of whimsy that worked wonderfully with the gothic stylings. Yohji Yamamoto has proved once again why he is one of Japan’s most acclaimed and beloved designers.

Marine Serre

If there were an award for most sheer variety in a runway show this week then Marine Serre would be a very serious contender for the crown. Everything from abstract geometric prints, to Scottish inspired check, to satanic body suits, to skin-tight head to toe velvet extravaganzas was present. Yet, despite this insane amount of variety, the show never at any point felt inconsistent or had any tonal issues.

There was a definite surrealism surrounding the collection and many open interpretations ready to be taken. One absolute though is that this was one of the most unique shows of the season so far and did a wonderful job of balancing both the functionality of fashion with the spectacle and performance. A true work of art.

Raf Simons has been nothing short of a success in the Fashion Industry. Having launched his own menswear label in 1995, alongside spells at renowned brands; Jil Sander, Dior, Calvin Klein and now a new partnership with Prada, Simons’ journey has been a roller coaster, to say the least! As we prepare for the next Prada spectacular in September there seems no better time to reminisce on our favourite Simons moments.

The Raf Simons collection of Spring 2002 strongly encapsulated that streak of “rebellious youth culture” for which the label is widely known. The title of the collection “Woe onto Those Who Spit on the Fear Generation…The Wind Will Blow It Back” drew upon the social turbulence of the youth, with powerful messages such as “We Are Ready and Willing to Ignite Just Born Too Late” printed across many of the garments. The looks were dominated with headscarves and stark block colours of black, red, and white, with many models carrying a fire torch; an unexpected yet highly atmospheric addition to the show.

Although rebellion and youth culture are inspirational within his personal label, Simons has also demonstrated his flair for the traditional, and proved himself the perfect fit for Jil Sander in 2005. In line with Jil Sander’s minimalist aesthetic, Simons’ earlier collections for the Brand were beautiful in their simplicity yet flirted with experimental shapes. Across his eight years at the House, Simons demonstrated his ability to create inventive yet inherently wearable designs. His abstract prints met the simplicity of tailoring, asymmetrical sleeved coats were subtle, yet statement and fringe cut-out dresses were daring. Simons has a talent for making his own style apparent while paying respect to the ethos of the Brand. In 2012 we saw the beginning of a new chapter when Raf Simons made his memorable debut at Dior as Creative Director. Presenting a glow of elegance and sophistication that alluded to the Brand’s ‘new look’ of 1947, the collection was definitively Dior. Incorporating the classic nipped waist, accentuated hips, and flattering curvature around the bust, Simons had succeeded in reinventing a timeless look for the Dior Woman. Yet Simons’ artistic passion was cleverly woven throughout the iconic language of Dior with several of the pieces featuring the abstract works of Sterling Ruby, an artist that the designer has admired for many years. The result was a series of beautiful dresses that showcased the incredibly traditional yet new direction of the Brand under Simons’ wing.

It is no surprise that Simons’ penchant for the artistic genre developed while at Dior, with Christian Dior himself taking pleasure in the works of Salvador Dali. For the Fall of 2013, Simons drew upon the works of Andy Warhol with its repetitive prints and portrait detailing, followed by incredibly experimental colour contrasts the following year. Simons’ journey at Dior felt short but sweet, however, his contribution to the Brand in both a traditional and artistic sense will always be remembered. Who can forget a pairing as harmonious as Simons and Dior!

Simons’ career has been abundant with highlights and these are only a few of our favourites. We are excited to see what the Prada – Simons partnership brings for Spring/Summer 2021, and if it is anything like Simons’ collections so far, this show is one to keep posted on your calendar.

The evening of 22 July 2020 saw the Dior 2021 Cruise Collection appear in a charming square at Lecce, a city-based in the southern Italian region of Puglia. In favor of an entirely digital display, Dior has risen to the challenge of a physical event proving in true fashion style that the show must go on! Only a limited audience were able to admire the work at this beautiful historical setting, but for the rest of us who tuned in to the digital stream, there was an abundance of culture taking us on a mesmerizing and magical evening in Italy, even if we were at home.

As the show began the atmosphere was more alive than ever. A subtle glimmer of lighted quotes framed the town square as a group of dancers stood still amongst the darkness. As anticipatory music began to rise a model could be faintly seen, an enchanting burst of colour lit the entire square: a captivating entrance for the 2021 Cruise Collection.

With its depth of culture and ancient traditions, the rural region of Puglia formed the inspiration for this collection. The blissful Italian landscape is illustrated through delicate longline dresses which are embroidered with flowers and wheat; their floaty skirts being accentuated with a brown bustier. An accompanying Christian Dior bag bursting with ears of wheat completes the look for those seeking that definitive rural Italian ambiance.

Dior Cruise 2021 Collection via Vogue

With models showcasing lightweight linen skirts, trousers and suit jackets we can only imagine roaming around Puglia on a warm Summer’s day. A versatile companion, the headscarf stood out as a charming addition to nearly every daytime look. For an evening rendezvous, the finale dress is sure to spark a romance. A delicate gown of burnt sienna is embellished with rural-inspired embroidery of flowers and animals, paired with a matching bustier, cuff bracelets and sandals. Of course, a gold tiara completes the ensemble; we would expect nothing less from Dior.

Dior Cruise 2021 Collection via Vogue

The highly intricate and skilled embroidery technique of tombolo is woven throughout Cruise 2021, the craft of local artisans forming a significant part of the collection. Speaking about the collection on the Dior site, Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri shares how “something that was very important to [her] was conveying how much craftsmanship value there is in Puglia and how important it is, especially for younger generations to reinvest in this”. With family ties to Puglia through her father, Chiuri shows support for the local community and a desire to celebrate the cultural traditions of the region.

Dior Cruise 2021 Collection via Vogue

According to Vogue, CEO of Dior Pietro Beccari also stated “We would like to send a message of support, hope, and rebirth to the world, to the big suppliers and the small ones. Many still don’t know how to survive, so this move is so important for the artisans that we need to preserve. We want to give them a reason to restart.” With ninety beautiful looks and a spectacular show, Dior has succeeded in the worldwide recognition of talent from local artisans, artists, musicians, and dancers.

The Dior 2021 Cruise Collection was an artistic extravaganza, and we can only admire how the collaborative efforts of those involved came together to host a wonderful evening of fashion and performance. I am sure we can all agree that this show stood out this season and is one we might just have to watch again…
