But despite its contentiousness, as the masses have grown accustomed to the the inevitability of a virtual takeover, the beauty industry has irrefutably taken note. So, what is the metaverse anyway? To put it simply, it’s an immersive space where users can interact with one another, blending elements of the physical, with the digital. From NFTs to augmented reality headsets, if the idea of the metaverse hasn’t quite captivated your interest, the beauty industry’s approach to it most certainly will.

Whilst brands like Dermalogica have launched interactive, 3D virtual experiences, labels such as Nars have not only created a collection of NFTs, but have partnered with Roblox to incentivise users to remain engaged with their products – whether physically, or online. From Fenty Beauty’s decision to file a trademark for virtual downloadable goods, to L’Oréal’s 17 trademark applications linked to NFTs, it can’t be denied that the beauty world is set to tackle just about anything that comes its way.

Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about the five beauty brands that are taking the metaverse by storm.

Dermalogica

In July 2021, Dermalogica soft-launched its virtual reality e-commerce storefront, enabling users to purchase featured products. Whilst including an avatar of Dermalogica’s VP of Technology and Innovation, Dr. Angela Murphy, users can employ a Dermalogica aesthetician locator, utilise a free skin analysis face mapping tool, and even watch educational videos on the brand’s latest products. Whilst heightening brand awareness and driving website traffic, it’s Dermalogica that undoubtedly has innovation at its forefront.

Nars

Sold via NFT marketplace Truesy to intentionally coincide with National Orgasm Day, in July 2021, Nars Cosmetics commissioned three artists to create NFTs inspired by their signature Orgasm line, with prices ranging from $50 to $500. To make matters more exciting, Nars further entered the metaverse when they partnered with Supersocial to launch an immersive virtual experience on Roblox. The feature, known as Nars Color Quest, was inspired by the brand’s Laguna and Light Reflecting product franchises, depicted via four different islands. Each is home to a non-playable character, including founder and creative director François Nars, where users can use virtual currency to purchase a plethora of virtual looks and merchandise – building their very own makeup palettes inspired by real-life products. Targeting 13 to 24 year-olds, Nars are inevitably set to conquer the next generation of beauty fanatics.

Clinique

Recently, Clinique launched its inclusive ‘Metaverse Like Us’ NFT project, partnering with makeup artists Sheika Daley, Emira D’Spain, and Tess Daly. Within the brands collection of avatars, 60% depict people of colour and 20% represent those suffering from issues such as Vitiligo and Down Syndrome, ensuring that a wide range of communities receive the representation they deserve in the virtual realm. Whilst the avatars are more than just images and can be used to travel between different metaverse spaces, each of the beauty looks represent an achievable reality utilising Clinique’s staple products. In addition to boosting sales, Clinique is simultaneously opposing the unrealistic beauty standards that are embedded within our everyday reality, taking advantage of new technologies to advocate individuality in all its shapes and sizes.

Byredo

As an increasing number of its counterparts continue to invest in the digital realm, Byredo has caught on. Partnering with Nike’s digital fashion startup, RTFKT, the pair are set to release a series of “digital and physical fragrances.” Made up of 26 different components that reflect a variety of emotions, such as harmony and naivety, the collectable smells are available in limited numbers, solely existing within Web 3.0 and flaunting their title as ‘the scent of the metaverse.’ Both bold and experimental, we wouldn’t expect anything less from a label like Byredo.

Charlotte Tilbury

This April, Charlotte Tilbury launched its 3-Dimensional, immersive virtual shopping world, including a virtual try-on feature as well as the chance to book 1-2-1 virtual consultations. Collaborating with e-commerce platform Obsess to launch the Pillow Talk Party Virtual Wonderland, guests are met by a 3D avatar of Charlotte Tilbury herself, accessing exclusive content and engaging with the ‘shop with friends’ feature. What better way to celebrate the success of a collection as iconic as this one?

From futuristic games of table tennis set in space, to a dreamlike pastel paradise and to more down to earth, intimate campaigns that let the products sell themselves, there’s something of interest for everyone in this collection of campaigns that we think are super cool and worth talking about!

Skims

Skims is a brand of underwear, loungewear and shapewear created by the well-known Kim Kardashian who aims to include and accept all different body types, proving to have products for any size, and with a color scale that can embrace all different types of complexions. The latest collection features the iconic models Candice Swanepoel, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum and Alessandria Ambrosio who, for the first time, have come together for an advertising campaign to wear Skims’ best sellers from the collection, Fits Everybody. Who better than our supermodel icons to wear the most iconic pieces of this collection, ranging from simple panties to leotards. The collection also includes bras; simple designs but always desired. The intimate campaign was captured by Greg Swales who, thanks to his creative eye, has managed to capture legendary photos.

Prada Linea Rossa

The new Prada Linea Rossa collection goes back to the brand’s roots with a healthy dose of 1990s minimalism. Sleek, simplistic and monochromatic, the collection features a futuristic array of shorts, tops, swimsuits, leggings, jackets and sneakers in black, silver and white with slick flashes of red sporting the Prada logo. The campaign video also embraces the future with a video that echoes the style of the video for Michael and Janet Jackson’s 90s hit Scream. Set in a pristine white space the video features a futuristic game of table tennis overlooked by a round, floating robot with a piercing red eye. The eye-catching video was directed by Albert Moya with creative direction by General Idea.

Ami

The new collection from the French brand AMI focuses on showcasing their brand-new Accordion bag. The bag comes in two sizes, large and small, and a trio of colours, with black, burgundy and evergreen available to choose from. The bags are all incredibly sleek and elegant and will no doubt add a wonderful touch of sophistication to any accompanying outfit. Also sleek and sophisticated is the brand’s campaign for the bag starring none other than Normani. The campaign, photographed by Ethan James Green, captures the star in a vintage black and white filter as she is dressed in a sleek black blazer, tights, boots and beret with a backdrop of the streets of Los Angeles. The campaign has an undeniably classy vibe and feels utterly timeless.

Ghd

GHD Hair’s new collection of hair styling tools come in a cute array of pastel blues, pinks and purples spreading across curlers, hairdryers and straighteners. The campaign for the products is super simplistic in a bid to let the products themselves do the talking, but it works. Set amongst a backdrop of a dreamy pink and blue, the campaign showcases the products in all their glory floating on multicoloured clouds and being used by TikTokers including Gabrielle Morrison, Jessie Mae Alonzo Abby Roberts and Marta Losito in pastel paradises whilst they are also wearing, you guessed it, pastel outfits. The colour scheme works well for the campaign and evokes a cute and playful vibe which doesn’t take itself too seriously but still does a great job at showcasing the dreamlike collection.

Charlotte Tilbury

Pillow Talk Party, the latest Charlotte Tilbury collection, aspires to make everyone feel and look like the most beautiful and confident versions of themselves possible. Seeking to make eyes pop, lips look fuller and wider, and complexion glow brighter, the brand has gathered together a huge number of stars for a dreamy campaign that embraces a girls night in to remember. Kate Moss, Twiggy Lawson, Jordan Dunn, Kaia Gerber and Sofia Schwarzkopf-Tilbury are just a handful of those featured in the pink promos lounging around on beds, checking their makeup in the mirror and talking on old-styled landline phones. That’s a night in we wish we’d gotten an invite to!

Kylie Cosmetics

The new collection from Kylie Cosmetics is a collaboration with Kylie’s sister Kendall, aptly titled the Kendall Collection. The collection, which features a pressed powder palette, blush, highlighter cheek quad, lip crayon set, and lip gloss comes in a pastel lilac case which is sure to add a cute vibe to your makeup station. The campaign leans heavily on this pastel lilac colour palette and also utilises bunches of pastel flowers in shades of purple and lilac to highlight the fact that this is a Spring focused collection. The collection also had an exclusive taster release before it officially dropped which featured a lilac van completely covered in a sea of purple flowers, which was a really stunning spectacle.

Launched today, the new makeup collection contains four products that are available to buy as a whole collection or as a single item. You will love Super Nudes ‘Easy Eye’ eyeshadow palette which ‘features three cool, caramel brown shades and three warm, bronze shades for universally–flattering nude-toned, smokey eye magic’, as described on the Charlotte Tilbury website.
