<p>Beauty advent calendars have rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years, with many of&nbsp; us choosing to swap out the chocolate for a little touch of beauty in the run up to Christmas. With&nbsp;labels such as Charlotte Tilbury and Dior releasing their own calendars, it was about time beauty&nbsp; powerhouse, Chanel, did the same. Launching in dedication to mark the 100th birthday of the&nbsp; No.5 fragrance, the advent calendar is a collectible lover’s Christmas wish come true! What could&nbsp; be better than waking up in the morning to open the door to a bunch of mini Chanel goodies?</p>



<p>The calendar itself is a beauty, exquisitely housed in the instantly recognisable silhouette of the&nbsp; No.5 perfume bottle, which can even be kept as a keepsake box once the festive season has&nbsp; been and gone. Featuring 27 numbered boxes, which you can start opening on December 5th and finish on December 31st, the calendar boasts a whole range of Chanel products, including&nbsp; makeup, jewellery, Christmas ornaments, and of course, No.5 Eau de Parfum!&nbsp;</p>

<p id="E49">To help celebrate the centennial of the brand this year, Chanel has released their Factory 5 Collection. Accommodating 17 limited-edition beauty products all housed in everyday objects (like paint cans, washing up bottles and shoe polish tins) this range is on course to become the ultimate collector&#8217;s items. Better yet, all products smell like the brand&#8217;s heritage scent – the fabulous Chanel No.5.</p>



<p id="E52">Explaining the thinking behind using mundane objects to front the collection, Thomas de Pre de Saint Maur – Chanel’s Head of Global Creative Resources said <strong><em>“There can be as much value in products that we use regularly as in products that we use for very special occasions. Expect them to be<em><strong> “imagined as theme parks dedicated to N°5, immerse people in a world which mixes the black and white identity of N°5 and the bright colors of pop culture”</strong></em> as Chanel explains in a press release. <strong><em>“The experience is intended to be entertaining and offers a journey around the 17 products. In a factory setting, the public follows the product through the various production line workstations and ends its journey with a visit to the factory store where they can watch playful, offbeat demonstrations.”</em></strong></p>

<p id="E53">From the book <em>The Perfume Of The Century</em> by Chiara Pasqualetti Johnson, she narrates the close relationship between the icon and her obsession with numerology. 5 is extremely important to Coco, as she launched the perfume on May 5th, 1921, on the fifth day of the fifth month, as a lucky charm. Other important numbers to Coco, are those written on every bottle of the perfume: 1000, to indicate the number of jasmine flowers used to produce 30ml of perfume (but not any jasmine, it has to originate specifically from Provence); 12: for every bottle of perfume, 12 button roses are used. They only blossom once a year, in May. The last number is 33, which indicates how a bottle of the perfume is sold every 33 seconds (however, the source is not confirmed). And these are just a few… to keep the exclusivity and allure of the perfume high, the house hasn’t revealed all of Chanel’s heritage numbers.</p>

<p id="E91">Chanel and the number 5, which its production still remains a mystery, are inextricably linked. Firstly, it was her fifth attempt at formulating the product that made her the fortune, and was even a mistake for the lab to carry out that exact formulation. After WW2 and her various exiles, she returned to the fashion scene by relaunching the perfume on February 5, 1954. Once again, she was able to revolutionize the fashion scene, and accompany the most famous celebrities of the time. Chanel’s obsession with numerology and the third primary number continues, since in Chanel’s eyes it was the perfect mix between the masculine and feminine world, the sort of androgynous look that she invented in the 20s and made her so successfully acclaimed.</p>

<p id="E105">5 was Chanel’s fetish, becoming music in Igor Stravinskij’s compositions (she even financed his performances with extraordinary sums of money), and is even represented by the lions that protect her own tombstone – which she designed herself in Losanne. She specifically chose to be buried in Switzerland to give homage to the country that welcomed her from 1945 to 1952, during which she had to leave France for risking her own death.</p>



<p id="E123">The number 5 was in fact her talisman, a prediction that she discovered thanks to a psychic, which assured her it would bring her fortune. Coco was sure about it and started implementing it everywhere in her life. In her apartment, the number was found in the most unimaginable places, even between the droplets of her chandelier. Her runway shows always happened on the 5th of February and August, Chanel n.5 was her first perfume launched, and she was even the first to name a perfume after the number, or in fact any number.</p>

<p>Adverts- the 30-second-long banes of your life when you finally get to slump on your couch and put your tired little feet up in front of an episode of the Kardashians after a long hard day of shopping. But as November gives way to December and we all get thrust into the festive season, adverts become gradually slightly more bearable to watch as Christmas campaigns begin littering our screens breaking us in before the iconic annual John Lewis Christmas advert drop. Yes, video montages of gravy pouring over unrealistically perfect turkeys are all well and good but what about the brands that take the humble Christmas ad and <em>make it fashion. </em>We know not everything in life is a competition, but it just makes it that little bit more exciting, doesn’t it?!</p>



<p>1). In third place for the award for the brand that has most successfully turned the ‘Christmas ad’ into <em>fashion</em>, we have the Chanel. Would you expect anything less? This year the brand presented us with its dainty little Christmas advert for the infamous fragrance Chanel No.5 with no less than the luxurious Parisian elegance Chanel is famed for&#8230;</p>

<p>2). Our runner up is a brand who’s Christmas campaigns are usually something along the lines of heartfelt videos displaying the rich history of the iconic British brand, intertwined with festive music and typical ‘Christmas day’ scenes. A stark contrast from the clinically white backdrop and pumping techno music that Burberry released this year for their Holiday 2019 campaign. It almost looks like something you’d watch at an exhibition at the Tate Modern, but we kind of love it.</p>

<p>3). And in first place we have …. drum roll please…. the reigning champion of managing to turn a Christmas ad into fashion… Gucci. Their 2019 ‘Gucci gift giving 2019 Campaign’ stays true to their quirky home-made-video vintage style adverts that manage to give you a feeling of nostalgia about the 70s and 80s even if you weren’t even born then, yet still feel timeless. A whole 1:35 of pure indulgent opulence… enjoy.</p>
