Since Elon Musk’s takeover of the platform in late October, drastic changes have been made to the company’s operation and on a user surface level. Mass firings, multiple executive resignations and employees having to sleep at work are some examples of what Twitter has looked like in recent weeks due to Musk’s new management style. If the exploitation and violation of Twitter workers’ rights aren’t enough to make companies think twice, the changes made for users and accounts may well be.

Musk’s decision to remove the verification symbol on Twitter accounts has led to chaos as misinformation has spread by brand impersonations. Companies such as Dyson have removed advertising campaigns from the social media site, along with many others pausing campaigns. Brand reputations and identities have been put at risk for many companies as their promotion campaigns have appeared alongside unwanted tweets which violate children’s rights. This has appeared following Musk’s vision for the platform to enable free speech, which celebrities such as Gigi Hadid have referred to as a place allowing the spread of hatred and bigotry. Along with Hadid, big names such as Jameela Jamil and Sara Bareilles have also removed their Twitter accounts.

However, within the fashion world, Balenciaga is so far the only luxury fashion house to wave goodbye to the chaotic landscape which is now Twitter. So, the question follows whether other fashion brands will follow their lead and step back from the platform or whether they will remain solitary?  Visual platforms tend to be more effective for fashion brands and therefore Twitter may be an easier exit for fashion brands as opposed to other brands.  We can only imagine regarding the scale and pace of changes happening at Twitter that other fashion houses will join Balenciaga in unity.

A new meta-created fashion marketplace has arrived. Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne were announced to be the first fashion brands at Meta Avatar Store. Starting this week, customers will be able to dress their avatars in iconic brand digital outfits via Meta Avatar Store. It will be available on Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook.

A new research report from the Institute of Digital Fashion suggested that people want more choices for diverse representation in online spaces which represents a huge opportunity for fashion brands.

Balenciaga CEO Cédric Charbit declared in a press release: “Web3 and Meta are bringing unprecedented opportunities for Balenciaga, our audience, and our products, opening up new territories for luxury.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram VP of fashion partnerships Eva Chen, announced the updates via Instagram Live on Friday, saying that these capabilities will be available next week, starting with the US, Canada, Thailand, and Mexico.

The items for sale in the avatar store will range from $2.99 to $8.99 to start.

Starting with well-regarded brands was a key first step, said Mark Zukerberg, adding that the vision is to expand access. There are plans to expand this new project to independent creators, so they can sell their designs.“We want to create a marketplace so creators, over time, can design clothing and sell it,” Zuckerberg said. “A lot of the dream is to make it accessible to anyone. If you want to design fashion today, you need the physical materials and equipment, but in the future, anyone with a computer and imagination will be able to come up with ideas for this.”

For brands, this offers exponential ways to sell digital assets to consumers across multiple platforms, scenarios, and identities. Virtual fashion and customizable avatars are slowly becoming the next direct-to-consumer opportunity, especially for Gen Z customers who are increasingly willing to spend time and money in digital worlds.

The rumors of the show’s location were in everyone mouth’s for a while. A few hints on Instagram have raised the anticipation in addition to the countdown posts of the event.

The event hosted special guests such as Marc Jacobs, Kanye West, Megan Thee Stallion, Pharell Williams, Offset, and Frank Ocean. Balenciaga’s show happened on the actual trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange with the ringing of the opening bell. Demna Gvasalia brought to the runway alien-like models with full-face latex coverings, oversized tracksuits, and exaggerated silhouettes in the middle of a futurist Wall Street. The show was the perfect occasion to display the new collaboration with Adidas which is now available on Balenciaga.com ranging pieces from socks and accessories to Leather jackets.

This show was definitely a milestone event for the brand as it was Balenciaga’s first American show in 20 years, the last time Balenciaga showed in New York was in February 2003. An event that perfectly translates the boldness of the Georgian stylist, “New York, New York” was performed by Carey Mulligan in “Shame” movie and the show ended with New York Stock Exchange screens flickering.

Inside the temple of consumerism, Balenciaga has a clear message: money makes the world go round.

The brand also recently announced that they will begin to accept cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum online and at select stores. Hurry, it is only available until May 29^th!

Lanvin

A quick google search of Lanvin and you’re bound to be bombarded with praiseful phrases like ‘elegance’, ‘femininity’, and ‘modernity’- characteristics attributed to the brand by its founder: Jeanne Lanvin. The Paris 2022 ‘Illusion of Fashion’ collection embodied these qualities.

For his 2022 Paris Fashion Week show, Bruno Sialelli looked back to Jeanne Lanvin’s gracious garments to cultivate a 1920s Hollywood inspired evening wear range that transported us back to the brand’s origins as the first fashion house in France. If Lanvin’s Hollywood inspiration wasn’t evident enough through the crushed velvet suits and floor-length gowns, Sialelli began his show with an opening sequence that mimicked Warner Bro’s iconic opening scene as the Lanvin logo was projected on a black and white vintage graphic. Nostalgically, the end of the show was dominated by lace, a material used notoriously in old Hollywood and even more so by Jeanne Lanvin herself. Sialelli incorporated the sheer fabric into couture and abstract poofy silhouettes to create chic gowns.

Despite the old-fashioned garments, the show was modern in its ethos. A diverse range of models like Paloma Elsesser and America Gonzalez stole the show in floral gowns and exaggerated boxy blazers. The collection was an exuberant ode to Lanvin’s history of crafting captivating evening wear.

Hermes

Looking back to its equestrian roots, the Hermes show strayed from trends and fads, sticking to the classical luxury goods they know best.

The sound of soft, feminine musings whispered around the ill-lit setting as models cascaded the runway in traditional Hermes leather goods like structured purses and knee-high boots. Adding a sultry twist to the traditional collection was the frequent use of sheer fabrics. Model’s torsos and calves were exposed by see-through chiffon for a seductive take on high fashion.

Colour was largely omitted from the start of the show, as Hermes sent monochromatic black and white looks down the catwalk. Gradually subtle tones of sage green and cerulean entered the scene, taking the form of old-money flared collars and structured blazers.

Vivienne Westwood by Andreas Kronthaler

As weddings resume after the pandemic, designers are looking for wacky and wonderful ways to reinvent the traditional ivory clad bridal attire. For his FW22 Parisian Vivienne Westwood show, Andreas Kronthaler treated us to another bridal Bella Hadid moment but instead of a bouquet, the world-class model donned red pom-poms, sparkling tights, and a single rose to accessorise her veiled look. Even further from the traditional bride was Kronthaler’s black-veiled gown, reminiscent of sinister horror movie costumes like those in The Woman in Black. Kronthaler broke the mould of what is considered ‘normal’ bridal chic- tying the knot never looked so menacing.

Even more unconventional than his bridal couture was Kronthaler’s colour combinations. The designer paired eccentric colours like fluorescent pink and brown- tones rarely seen together- but somehow complemented each other marvellously. The rest of the collection focused on ruched and metallic material paired with heavy gold bling, likely a nod to Vivienne Westwood’s first-ever runway show ‘Pirates’ in 1981.

Elie Saab

When seeking evening wear that turns heads, Elie Saab’s excessively glamorous collections are always our first point of call. For his FW22 collection, the Lebanese designer created buoyant and light-hearted designs celebrating lady-like charm. Huge flower-shaped materials emerged from the shoulders of models while others sported slim-fitting jumpsuits submerged in shimmering glitter. Capes, abstract cut-outs defined by medusa style gold rims, and fluffy fur trims all added to the outrageously extra collection. One look that caught audience members like Therese H off- guard amongst the extravagant feminine pieces was a floor-length gown covered by a hoodie, toning down the OTT evening wear to add a touch of casual flair to the collection.

Balenciaga

In a statement released before the show, Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, admitted that going forward with his ‘360 Degrees’ Paris Fashion Week show was not an easy decision following the current crisis in Ukraine. But, instead of cancelling the show and ‘giving in’, he dedicated his work to ‘fearlessness, resistance, and peace’ in support of those suffering.

The snowy setting of the show was possibly Balenciaga’s finest set choice yet (even topping their 2019 tunnel scene). Audience members like Kim Kardashian perched on seats covered with the Ukraine flag behind a screen that showcased models trudging through synthetic snow and wind- a clever representation of triumph and resistance.

The garments remained faithful to Balenciaga’s fashion ethos of creating modern minimalist pieces through tight-fitting black dresses, chunky gold accessories, and baggy black boots with the iconic ultra-pointed Balenciaga toe. Juxtaposing the glamour of the show was the purses that mimicked the shape of a trash bag, a possible reference to the revolutionary ‘sack dress’ which elevated the brand’s popularity in the 20th century. The show ended with monochromatic blue and yellow looks as a final act of support towards Ukraine; ending the avalanche of modernist glamour with a heartfelt message.

Valentino

Pink. It isn’t just a colour, nor a mere pretty hue. It is an expression, an art form, a vision of femininity, power, and love- pink is an attitude. Nobody has recognised the shade’s ability to inspire more than Pierpaolo Piccioli at his Paris Fashion Week show. To cultivate the message behind the collection, the iconic fashion house collaborated with artist Douglas Coupland to create an identity for the collection based on quotes like ‘minimalists are hoarding space’, demonstrating the collection’s message to go pink or go home.

Fashion industry experts like Leonie Hanne perched on the front row besides new faces of the brand like Zendaya, who dressed in a monochromatic look from Valentino’s new collection. Opening the show with a message from the designer, Piccioli addressed the current global crisis, deeming that ‘love is the answer, always’. The designer’s voice faded to the sound of romance ballads by Yazoo drifting around the vivid scene to reiterate the show’s message of love. Models trickled onto the flamingo runway wearing monochromatic looks, Piccioli incorporated the intrepid colour onto traditional Valentino silhouettes like poofy skirts and strong blazers before switching to all-black looks, juxtaposing the playful hue with a sprinkle of Valentino drama.

The show was closed by Kristen Mcmenamy in a flowing chiffon gown with a walk exuding as much power as the garment itself. Models assembled back onto the scene to create a chill-inducing army of pink; a true vision of solidarity in a time so bleak.

Balenciaga aims to celebrate the most supportive friends of the brand in comfortable and familiar places, shooting in locations from Kim’s Calabasas home to Justin’s favourite LA Studio. 

If these photographs weren’t exciting enough, the campaign is due to be screened on famous facades around the world, starting with Paris’ Théâtre de la Ville. 

With this latest campaign, we see that Balenciaga is continuing to elevate its style and connections. Blending the biggest names in pop culture with cutting edge designs and classic names such as Isabelle Huppert is the making of a campaign that will tick all the right boxes whilst gaining exposure from fashion fans across the globe.

Epic Games recently announced their collaboration with Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia to create a collection of virtual in-game looks, along with matching physical garments available to purchase. Between September 21st and 28th, fans can unlock two free collaboration skins in-game as long as they complete Shady Doggo’s challenges, further skins for characters are also available to purchase via the Item Shop.

Video game collaborations have become a popular choice for artists, musicians, and now fashion houses. In 2020, Travis Scott performed a live concert to an audience of 12 million amid a global lockdown, via Fortnite, whilst Lil Nas X took to the online kids game, Roblox, to perform to an accumulative audience of 33 million.

Gaming platforms allow participants to experience the thrill of live performances – literally larger than life artists, dystopian and fantasy settings unimaginable in reality, and a live community of audience members are all achievable via video game. During Covid, we became accustomed to living in a digital world – as we are now exiting lockdown, we have learnt the convenience of virtual events, the accessibility of the internet, and the new audiences which can be reached globally through online platforms.

Virtual fashion shows were the only access to collections for a whole year, with designers like, Hanifa, raising expectations of how we expect garments to be presented. For Fall 2021, Balenciaga even released their collection in the form of a walk-through video game, called ‘The Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow’. Recently, Louis Vuitton also entered the gaming world for the house’s 200-year celebration.In, ‘Louis the Game’, the player embarks on an adventure to collect candles to commemorate the birthday of Louis Vuitton, whilst also having to opportunity to obtain real-life NFTs from the digital artist, Beeple.

Like many brands who had to adjust to this new reality after the effects of Covid, Demna’s Balenciaga is making waves in couture, streetwear, music, and now, gaming. It is truly a designer house constantly reinventing, proving that fashion is a boundless endeavour and there is much we can expect when clothing is included in collaborations with other creative platforms.

“A lot of people don’t even know that Balenciaga is a 100-plus-year-old couture brand,” the designer told Women’s Wear Daily in a recent interview. “They think it’s a brand that started with the Triple S sneaker. So in a way, it’s kind of educational, but also putting in the spotlight what is the most important thing about fashion, and to me couture is the purest expression of that.”

In creating the first couture collection for the house in 53 years, Gvasalia encapsulated the eye with the darkest of dark blacks that almost absorb the colours around them. The ultra-dark shades appeared so rich that they were almost intoxicating, with their intensity being reminiscent of “Vantablack,” the scientifically produced blackest of blacks.

But his dynamic use of colour was multi-dimensional. The ultra-dark blacks were anything but flat — rather, they were used on a variety of textures including croc, sequins, and leather. Intense and delicate tones were also used on everything from beaded evening wear to super-sized puffer coats with hems trailing the ground — with the super-size pieces tapping into Gvasalia’s signature talent for making gloriously oversized wares.

The cut of the garments were also sculpturally beautiful, with crisp, precise tailoring perfectly curved to the form of the wearer. The variety of cuts ranged from distinct diagonal lines laid out across the body, to curves made even more striking with expertly-placed architectural elements such as padding. These elements hailed to the innovations of Gvasalia, along with connecting the roots of Cristobal Balenciaga’s artistry — with his sculptural skills being a large part of the founding designer’s legacy.

On the accessories front, mask-like sunglasses wrapped around the eyes, and were matched with expressive earrings dripping with jewels, along with elegant long gloves.

The designs came together as a marriage of ultra-modernity meeting a foundation of tradition, with several cuts and embellishments nodding to the mid-century looks that made the house famous decades ago — but done in a way that clearly has the distinction of Gvasalia’s vision.

“I started to question things,” Gvasalia said in an interview with WWD, “I didn’t want it to be a tribute or look only like a homage to the heritage, because that would mean that I stay only in the past.”

The designer also noted that he wanted to create a collection that helped the world reconsider beyond previous limitations of who a couture client might be.

“Instead of buying 20 T-shirts and bags and shoes, you put money aside for one year and you can buy one unique piece that maybe only two other people in the world have,” he said to WWD. WWD also noted that “Gvasalia is adamant that couture can save fashion from the tyranny of “It” bags and shoes that are only a few clicks away and worn by everyone,” with his latest Ready-to-Wear collation for Balenciaga being, ”…a critique on fashion’s obsession with trends and “hero” items, which diminishes individuality.”

Adding to this, the CEO of Kering (Balenciaga’s parent company) Cédric Charbit told WWD that, “Just because you have an Instagram account or because you are taking selfies or because you wear sneakers doesn’t mean that you are not interested in couture. Balenciaga has always appealed to people with a distinct, unconventional point of view.”

Meaning both artists are incredibly talented in creating stylings for both the eyes and the ears.

Our perception of reality has undoubtedly changed over the past year, with some key industries reinventing themselves with the intent to stay alive and remain innovative throughout a period that forced us into monotony.

This is true for almost every creative industry, but most importantly for the fashion one. With virtual catwalks taking over, online fashion shows, and Instagram live attendance to these, the fashion world has had to redirect to the online world, relying on the development of technology and our overconsumption of social media.

For some this has been a success, for others (like us) it’s become a monotonous alternative… As much as we love the commodity of accessing everything from our phones, aren’t we tired of Instagram catwalks and shows? Didn’t it take away the exclusive element of high fashion?

Normally we would answer yes, we were bored of it… until we saw the deep-fake Balenciaga SS22 show ‘Clones’.

Balenciaga, through the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia, created an alienating virtual event through the interplay of cloning and disruption. One with a very direct, and refreshing message that centred on the presentation of alternative realities and our inability to distinguish the ‘real’ real from the crafted real.

As explained by Demna Gvasalia in a recent phone call with Vogue “What we see online is not what it is. What’s real and what’s fake?”.

The protagonist of the show was none other than Eliza Douglas, the American performer and painter known for her interdisciplinary take on art that has been opening and closing Balenciaga’s shows since fall of 2016. This time her role exceeded her usual one, allowing her to be the one and only model, or at least so it seems. Eliza appears wearing womenswear and menswear on the all-white runway in front of an apparent audience.

The show itself is non-existent, as explained by Balenciaga’s creative director, the audience is not there, the models are modelled, and in reality, the protagonist is (and has been for a while) technology. The show uses different narrative tools, starting with the evident play with cloning and deepfakes seen as all the models appear to have Eliza’s face. The narrative then continues through the use of music, with the choice of a soundtrack composed by Bfrnd that takes parts of all-time classics and represents them with a metallic, and almost disturbing, voice. And finally, through the presentation of functional, cyber-gothic, and somewhat rebellious clothing the show comes full circle – representing the continuation of the ‘Hacker Project’ started with Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, last April.

Everything about this show was almost mutant and aberrant, but in a way that forced us to appreciate the change. Besides, both the show and collection were in true Balenciaga attitude.

The reimagined universe was characterised by reversible garments, wrap-around coats, cargo pants that transform into jumpsuits, metal hoops and safety pins as accessories. The best, or for some worse, part? The fake Gucci of course. By that we mean, the evident interpretation of Gucci’s signature styles in Balenciaga products.

This show was a distant reality from the one with rather classic fashion pieces, one that introduced reconstructed garments that relate to the idea of singularity in a fake and clone-like world.

It’s now June, and Pride month this year is full of new and exciting surprises in the fashion scene… the most unexpected drop is perhaps Balenciaga’s pride collection, especially considering how unwilling these fashion houses are to drop their aesthetics for the purpose of spreading a message. And Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga is certainly continuing to amaze us this year, even after the Gucci ‘hacking’ collaboration. It is always a sore point in fashion when it comes to being political, especially considering how much designs need to be simplified to get the message across. But Balenciaga took the message to heart this year and used this capsule collection to commit and direct awareness towards such an urgent social issue. 

Available in selected stores and online, items in this collection include baseball caps, shirts, hoodies, waistbands, underwear, sports bra, and more. Its wearability fits their selling point, with two unique designs (still very conforming to the issue) that we predict will be seen on nearly every influencer for this pride month. 

The first design comes in a varsity-style lettering that spells out “GAY PRIDE BALENCIAGA 2021”, with the word GAY emblazoned with a rainbow flag. Every look of the collection announces pride in a simple yet straightforward style. While some designs highlight the rainbow flag, others focus on the though-provoking lettering. A colorful rainbow can be seen around the waist of men and women’s underwear, and whilst it’s not the first brand to have embraced this design, Balenciaga always knows how to make their clothes irresistible. Other rainbow styles include socks, party bracelets, and fake fur shoulder strap coin purses. But if you want to opt for more low key staples from the collection, the metal brooches are very eccentric and the collection of colourful caps are to die for.

This collection not only actively celebrates this unprecedented pride month, but also largely supports the Trevor Project and its mission to end LGBTQ youth suicide. Balenciaga will donate 15% of the sales price from the Pride 2021 capsule collection to The Trevor Project. Founded in 1998, it is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people, offering 24/7 intervention suite, advocating for the approval of pro-LGBTQ legislations and helping young LGBTQ people in crisis.
