Her blue fur get up was a vintage Lacroix haute couture piece from FW 2002 and fell nothing short of Badgalriri’s signature style. Elevated with stacked silver necklaces and black leather gloves, she stole the show.

Co-host for the evening, Maya Jama dazzled us as she wore a stunning olive-green gown with cross over detailing at the top and embroidered flowers at the front. The silk flowing train also included intricate embroidery along with a fishnet trim encapsulating Connor Ives as a designer as we see his unexpected fabric combinations and striking colours first hand.

Jourdan Dunn served us a head-to-toe leopard print moment with Dior. The model chanelled her inner black-cat energy with the cat-eye lashes, and showed off her legs with the micro shorts, perfectly accompanying the blazer and long black gloves. The bakerboy cap finished off the look with a British essence for the British Fashion Awards.

Ashley Graham walked the carpet in a gorgeous black dress from David Koma’s first collection for Blumarine. The black dress included a sheer train to finish it off and a structured bodice showing off her figure. Graham, who had her VS debut earlier this year, finished the look off with a slicked back bun and all silver jewellery.

The stunning Halle Bailey wore a bespoke Ellie Misner dress and channelled her inner Disney princess on the red carpet. She arrived with a light and airy presence as she graced us in a couture piece draped in pearls and holographic cut outs mirroring when she starred as The Little Mermaid.

Alex Consani became the first transgender woman to win the Model of The Year award last night and as Voir puts it – made style accessible to women everywhere. She walked the carpet looking gorgeous in a Dilara Findikoglu moment and celebrated backstage in style after thanking the transgender models who came before her, paving the way for Consani to flourish.

Julia Fox joined Consani in supporting emerging designer Dilara Findikoglu, as she broke the internet in the custom dress. The white floor-length gown included sheer cut outs showing off Fox’s figure, and styled with a wet-look up do and icy makeup to tie everything together.

Chlöe Bailey (left) is pictured looking glamorous in an Atsuko Kudo black gown with a red accent in the bust area. The latex ensemble created a raw feminine energy, the pop of red giving depth to the outfit and her hair matching the vibe as it effortlessly shaped her face. The look was finished off with a silver diamond necklace as we were left with an undeniable serve on the carpet.

Simone Ashley, Bridgerton star stepped onto the carpet in a baby pink, strapless Prada gown. The coquette dress had different levels to it; from a short front to a long train at the back and was finished off with a matching pink bow on the bodice. Styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Simone Ashley for sure had her girly moment on the runway in that dress, along with a slicked back hairstyle which was giving an iconic pixie cut at the front.

Ming Lee Simmons wore an undeniably daring look to the awards last night as she was pictured in a sheer chainmail dress. The floor length number was figure hugging and sleekly complemented by jet straight hair in a half up fashion and incredibly well contoured make-up. The look gave her a luxuriously fearless presence on the runway.

Munroe Bergdorf left Voir nothing short of speechless as she dominated the runway in a Patrick McDowell gown. The structured silhouette on the bodice broke off into a bubble skirt and was accompanied by a luxurious train graciously following her. The statement dress created a memorable bridal-like vibe which was sophisticated paired with dramatic flair.

Victoria’s Secret has made its famous return to New York after five years off the runway and came back more inclusive and diverse as promised.

The show was kicked off with Gigi rising up from under the runway in a soft pink playsuit and the classic Victoria’s Secret wings, followed by more Angels in an array of soft pinks and whites creating a charming and dreamy start to the show, including debut from plus-size model Devyn Garcia, who kickstarted Victoria’s Secret’s new image.

After Kate, a dark, metallic theme emerged and here is where we saw the inclusivity really begin and Victoria’s Secret fulfilling their promise to fans. We watched Valentina Sompaio walk the runway with giganantic bow-like wings, followed by plus-size model Kai Soleil, and later featuring Miss Tyra Banks closing the show.

As that section continued, we saw legendary Irina Shayk covered in stars followed by Joan Smalls in the most intricately carved wings, adding her finishing touch to that section.

As the models walked, attendees couldn’t keep their eyes off the shoes, all meticulously created to correspond with one theme and match each specific outfit. The shoes wrapped around the models’ legs, some with flowers or wings, others in a diamante style or plain and simple.

Plus-size model Ashley Graham opened the following section in a lace lingerie set with gold embellished wings and shoes to match. We got given a dark and sexy vibe, again heavily featuring red and black. Alessandra Ambrosio made her anticipated return in a sensual lingerie bodysuit, along with a debut from Jill Kortleve – another plus-size model feature this year, in a gorgeous flower number.

The fourth and final section began with an unexpected Cher performance and a lot of red to strongly finish of the show. Here we saw an influx of the original Angels closing the show with a bang, including Candice Swanepoel, Grace Elizabeth and Adriana Lima, accompanied by the new faces of VS.

The show was thought to be closed by the second Hadid Sister – Bella, in a ‘black swan’ feathered robe, opposite to Gigi who embodied the white swan in the opening. However, as the audience wondered whether she was coming out, the OG Tyra Banks rose from beneath the stage in a shiny corset and robe, and closed the show surrounded by all the angels.

Zendaya has earned herself the title of a fashion icon over the last years, and being this year’s co-hostess of the Gala (together with Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth), she proved there is no coincidence in that. She left us obsessed with two looks by John Galliano, one from Maison Margiela, evoking this year’s iconic Artisanal show in Paris, and the other one from Givenchy Haute Couture SS 1996. So, let’s get to the details shall we? The Maison Margiela look was a blue-green, glowing mesh dress with golden-blue-green fruit and leaves ornaments, and an impressive decorative back. And just look at the other-worldly makeup – do we need to say anything more? Now, the Givenchy look was a mottled grey silk gown with a long trail, complemented by a pink-white-yellow, bouquet-like hat. Hats off!

Opting for a richly ornamented, semi-transparent, silver Schiaparelli gown by Daniel Roseberry, she made an incredible impression both with her glimmering outfit and her flawless body shape. Time for an environmental approach – it’s Charli XCX in Marni’s gown by Francesco Risso, recycled from t-shirts from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Take a closer look at the dress to appreciate the details – the artistic loops, the linking of the layers of cotton, and the countless staples, which on one hand add an aesthetic – both edgy and glamorous – touch, and on the other one as if communicate the message of a desperate desire to survive, to live on, to fight the passage of time and be recreated and reused – in most environment-friendly manner possible.

Let’s stay in the topic of rebirth and sustainable design, shall we? Janelle Monáe’s custom dress by Vera Wang is a perfect embodiment of such an approach to the Gala’s theme, as the cherry of top of the glittering, opalescent, laser-cut sequins gown is a transparent flower on Janelle’s arm – and suffice it to say that this lovely flower is a product of the recycling process of plastic bottles. It’s here that fashion meets rebirth, re-usage, and passage of time – or, actually, finding a way around it. And frankly speaking, that’s what sustainable fashion should be about.

What’s special about Mona Patel’s gown from Iris van Herpen? It’s not just that the dress looks like multiple butterfly wings. It’s not just that the butterfly-shaped corset ends in a long trail of seemingly moving, aerodynamic layers of ivory fabric. It’s not even that some of the layers are so thin that they astonishingly well mimic actual butterfly wings. It’s the literally moving butterflies that Mona’s arms are adorned with. With their golden legs and bodies, the butterflies seem to be dancing around Patel, taking us to a truly magical garden of time.

Fashion icon and activist, Naomi Campbell, has launched a new web series on YouTube titled No Filter with Naomi.

The daily live-streamed and intimate show premiered on the platform on Monday, April the 6th with a special inaugural guest: fellow supermodel, Cindy Crawford. No Filter With Naomi will run for the next two weeks, streaming live at 8 pm (BST) from the supermodel’s channel with a range of surprise guests. The premise of the mini-series is to invite people to respect social distancing during this difficult time while discussing career experiences and moments between Naomi and a group of her lifetime friends — which includes designers, actors, fashion personalities and beauty gurus.

Campbell’s channel, ’Being Naomi’, officially debuted in late 2018 after the international supermodel decided to share what she had learned throughout her life, passing on tips and advises for everyone. In her introduction video, she says: ‘’You will get to see me as a real person’’. One of the model’s videos particularly sparked attention among social media: in fact, due to the current pandemic, Campbell filmed her trip back home where she is seen wearing a protective suit with respective glasses and gloves.

Unlike the previous one, this livestream ended earlier due to technical problems, regardless of Naomi’s intervention. Jacobs and Campbell later reached out to their fans on Instagram.

The third livestream saw as a third guest American actress, Nicole Richie. The Simple Life co-star shared her memories with Naomi on the reality show, claiming how it helped her to build her career. 2019 was Lizzo’s year. Her breakthrough album “Cuz I Love You” received widespread critical acclaim, making her synonymous with effortless confidence and composure. Establishing her as one of the most refreshing voices in the industry, it serves as somewhat of a manifesto of self-love and diverse representation.

True to form, Lizzo shined bright in the AMA’s. Apart from her passionate performance on stage, her costume Valentino orange ruffle dress caught everyone’s attention and gained viral status, largely thanks to her Valentino Garavani VSLING toybag, which more than anything seemed to have been created for the excellent memes that followed. Making the top of every best-dressed list from that night, Lizzo looked absolutely radiant.

While Lizzo’s body-positive attitude is largely received with love and reverberated by fans, representation and its celebration have only recently made centre stage in Hollywood. Even today, talented and successful entertainers larger than a size 0 admit to being systematically ignored by big name designers, who are simply not interested in dressing them for red carpet events.

Possibly the most infamous wardrobe-snob involved comedian Leslie Jones, whom in 2016 was set to make her Hollywood red carpet debut at the Ghostbusters remake premiere. After no designers agreed to dress her, Jones took to Twitter to ask for help. Designer Christian Siriano reached out, and eventually created an old Hollywood style red gown for her, in which she looked confident and elegant.

Following the incident, Siriano expressed his thoughts on the issue through twitter, calling out the industry’s bias against diverse body types:

“It shouldn’t be exceptional to work with brilliant people just because they’re not sample size. Congrats aren’t in order, a change is.”

In the July 2014 issue of Redbook, Hollywood darling Melissa McCarthy said she struggles to find designers willing to dress her for red carpet events, even after becoming one of the highest earning actors in the business. Taking matters to her own hands, McCarthy established her very own namesake clothing line, catering to sizes 2-28. In the 2016 Ghostbusters press tour, she exclusively wore her own vibrant and playful designs.

Other stars whose professional success and achievements were disregarded as they sought to collaborate with designers are Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer, model Ashley Graham, and actors Dascha Polanco, Rachel Bloom and Christina Hendricks. All of which received negative answers from designers refusing to work with them, even as award nominees, simply because they were not sample size. This seems quite odd, considering that dresses for these events very often are costume made, or at least tailored.

Whether this occurs due to creative visions limited to sizes 0-2, or good ol’ institutional bias against women who don’t conform to classic body image ideals – this is not a good look for the industry. Stepping into a new decade, I hope the vision of Lizzo effortlessly strutting in a custom couture dress, exuding all the confidence in the world, will inspire designers to be allies to talented women and make them feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. The fashion industry must quickly acknowledge the value of diversity and body positivity, as there can be no better PR for brands than creating breathtaking looks for successful women, whose charisma and stage presence can fill up a whole room, rather than a size 0.
