From tracksuits to Knee-high boots, Jlo was no stranger to all the beloved styles of the early 2000s. We love reflecting on these gorgeous y2k looks and thought we would share them with you to honour Lopez’s great achievement. 

Unreleased images shot by Tony Duran show us the hype of the 2000s style. Head-to-toe millennial pink, Lopez was always wearing peak 2000s styles which gave her status as not only a superstar but a fashion icon. 

Straight from the 2003-time capsule, will this look ever go out of fashion? A round of applause for Jenny from the block, please. This look confirms what we all thought we knew; Jenifer Lopez is the ultimate sassy and sexy icon. 

Jlo loved her headscarves, floppy hats, berets, and beanies. Special shout out to her for her use of hats and headwear which is still celebrated 20 years on. From baby pink knitted berets to chainmail headscarves, we are still waiting to see if there is anything she can’t pull off. 

The iconic image of Jlo in fur. This is a look that should be kept safe for generations to come to gaze upon lovingly. Her aviator glasses and fur combination screams confidence and empowerment. Lopez has always dressed in a female-empowering style, and we thank her for her services.

MTV’s Total Request Live in 2001 saw Jennifer Lopez grace the stage in classic y2k low-rise leather trousers. I’m sure spectators will still remember her performance as well as her outfit. We also adore the cropped American Football Jersey Lopez is wearing, and of course, her classic hoop earrings. 

At the peak of Juicy Couture and fashionable athleisure, Jennifer Lopez was the poster girl for matching low-rise tracksuits. The trend of matching tracksuits remains a nostalgic moment of the early 2000s and we can certainly give Lopez some credit for the craze. 

Reflecting upon these images tells us Jlo has really managed to pull off everything she has worn. From hyper-feminine styles to hyper-sexy fits, the 2000s saw her style versatility. Although she may have always been adaptable with her style, they all have something in common; they remain iconic and memorable. 

Excitingly, along with her inviting us to reminisce on past looks, she has also released This Is Me… Then on vinyl for the first time ever which is available now! One thing we are sure of is our love for Jlo- does not cost a thing.

“Mulberry Editions” is a series of collaborations with young and upcoming talent from the British Fashion scene, that will not only celebrate the brand’s five decades in business but the importance of committing to environmental and social causes through clothing.

Some of the designers participating in this exclusive project are Priya Ahluwalia, Richard Malone and Nicholas Dale… all of which have become known for their innovative designs and dedication to a responsible and multicultural fashion cycle.

The latest collaboration announced, and probably our favourite one too, is the one with Priya Ahluwalia. The two labels will be collaborating for a capsule collection of accessories centred on tradition and incorporation of cultural diversity.

London-based designer Priya Ahluwalia, who has recently collaborated with Danish label Ganni for another environmentally aware collection, will be venturing for the first time into the creation of accessories – from scarves to handbags. However, from what we can see, these won’t be just any other accessories. The designer has managed to showcase and pay homage to her Indian-Nigerian heritage through all of her creations and will continue to do so through this collaboration.

The Mulberry x Ahwlualia line-up consists of the iconic Mulberry designs, such as the portobello tote, reimagined together with elements and themes inspired by the Black culture – specifically black hair. The designs will be inspired by the beauty of black hair and hairstyles, by traditional techniques of braiding, by the diversity of hair texture, and most importantly by the understanding of hair as a means of expression.

We are certain that it will be an interesting collection, one that could not only form part of our day-to-day wear but that can demonstrate how cultural elements can be showcased and admired through fashion without the risk of cultural appropriation. Paying homage to a culture (or more) through carefully manufactured and designed products.

The collection is meant to celebrate the “artistry, rituals and symbolism of Afro-Caribbean hair and Priya’s own personal narrative,” explained the luxury lifestyle brand, Mulberry, in its press release. This will take form thanks to the capsule’s unique designs, bold colours, daring patterns and rich meaning.

But it doesn’t end there, the collaboration has been presented as part of Ahluwalia’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection during London Fashion Week, where the designer also presented ‘Parts of Me’ – a short film directed by Akinola Davies Jr that pays homage to the importance of hair in Black culture.

With the aim to properly present hair as more than a stylistic element, and to continue the conversation about the significance of black culture in the creation of this project Mulberry and Ahluwalia have collaborated on a second film – ‘Tools of Expression’ as an extension to the project.

To commemorate 19 years since Aaliyah’s death, we are looking today at the star’s incredible fashion style and music which transcend time and are vivid in our memory.

In an interview from 2001 for “Plus Vite Que La Musique” (French channel M6), Aaliyah confessed that her dream had always been to become an entertainer. The star who was then in her early twenties, spoke about becoming a veteran of the industry at such a young age and said she was happy. By that point, Aaliyah had contributed immensely to ‘90s pop culture and her sudden death, only a month after the interview, has not stopped her memory to live on.

With great regret, the world lost an amazing role model for the young generation. Aaliyah was sweetness, determination, and mystery, all packed up in a deceivingly tiny and fragile figure. She was a fighter and she achieved her dream, recording double platinum albums (Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, One in a Million, Aaliyah) and tracks for popular movies IT, Anabelle and Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

Becoming a world-renowned artist at only 15, Aaliyah was ready for the world with her soothing voice and her tomboy fashion style. It was new and out of the ordinary: all the baggy clothes drew attention to the face, to the person behind the clothes. Going through her teens, Aaliyah became keen on maintaining her figure and before long, the baggy jeans were paired with bralettes, crop tops and a low waist exposing underwear. Styled by Derek Lee and maintaining her natural mystery, Aaliyah became the symbol of sex appeal, which shined through her ghetto and masculine-inspired outfits.

Baby Girl became the inspiration for the popular fashion trends of today, the biggest one being athleisure – which is here to stay, especially amid the Coronavirus pandemic and rumours of a second wave. It is a weird time for fashion: comfortable, yet stylish; baggy, yet revealing; tomboy, yet feminine. And this is exactly what Aaliyah was all about and her allure was recognized in the fashion industry as well – take for example the iconic Tommy Hilfiger campaign from 1996 in which the star was featured.

Black and white is our favourite combination – keep it monochrome but play with textures. Pair a puffer jacket with cargo trousers (for the oversized effect, always look in the men’s section, thank us later) and a crop top. Accessories are very important for this look as everything is so neat and toned down. Style with statement sunglasses and rings. Let your trousers drop on your hips (no high waist) to show a hint of underwear and completely expose your stomach (if you dare).

The post GET THE LOOK: Remembering 19 Years Without Aaliyah, A Tribute to an R&B Legend and Style Trendsetter appeared first on Voir Fashion.

It was 1993 and the Annual Showcase of graduate talent. A series of buried garments that were resurrected from the ground made their way down the catwalk, their disintegrated form, and embellished coating of rust taking the original ‘earthy’ to new extremes. At this moment the world saw the beginning of an icon: the one and only Hussein Chalayan. Known for his incredibly innovative and experimental approach to fashion, Chalayan has been making fashion history for 25 years since the launch of his label in 1994. Taking a trip down memory lane, we will be celebrating some of our favorite Chalayan moments and his achievements over this period.

The thought of wearing our furniture seems unfathomable…until Chalayan’s Fall collection of 2000 that is. The show’s Grand Finale stunned the audience when four models transformed living room furniture into dresses. Chairs of simple grey covering were undressed and placed on the body, while the remaining frames were morphed into briefcases. When the final model appeared, she stepped into the coffee table and hooked a piece of furniture around her waist. Standing in her wooden skirt transformation, the audience applauded in awe. A technical mystery, it is safe to say that many were left speechless.

Chalayan’s combination of aesthetics and technology has advanced throughout his career. In the Spring/Summer of 2007 Chalayan again subverted the traditional catwalk show, displaying a series of garments that mechanically transformed into different silhouettes. A high-neck Victorian-style dress blooms open; its movement resembling that of a delicate flower. Several other dresses in the collection display their versatility as they shorten at the hem or grow outwards. Notorious for a Grand Finale, the collection ends with a dress that completely disappears, as if by magic. If anyone was going to bring magic to the catwalk it was going to be Chalayan.

Although the Fall collection of 2007 seemed slightly more subtle with a greater emphasis on everyday looks, that touch of Chalayan magic was still evident. In collaboration with Swarovski, a captivating LED light-up dress was exhibited, illuminating as the model made her way down a darkened catwalk. This seemingly simple silhouette was intricately layered with Swarovski crystals and 15,600 LED lights, which once again mesmerised the audience with the unexpected.

Chalayan’s work can still be appreciated for its beautiful design. For Spring 2020 Chalayan’s collection consists of some timeless styles with elegant silhouettes, block colours and classic stripes and checks. Some of the dresses concealed the face of the wearer, channeling Chalayan’s usual penchant for the unconventional.

Chalayan has proven himself to be an unstoppable creative, and we truly believe in his capability to bring any idea to life however adventurous it may be. Over the last 25 years, Chalayan has created some artistic masterpieces that challenge the boundaries between technology and fashion, making a distinctive and stand out brand. Exactly 10 years ago, ‘California Gurls’ – the song that was going to become the summer anthem for generations to come – was released as the lead single for Katy Perry’s second studio album ‘Teenage Dream’.

The track – produced by Dr Luke, Benny Blanco and Max Martin – incorporated mid-tempo disco-pop and funk-pop influences, matching them with Snoop Dogg’s verses in a cheerful ode to the state of California and its ‘gurls’. In the US, the record peaked at the number-one spot for six consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, but it soon became a worldwide success, reaching the first spot in 10 more countries.

However, the song grew even more popular with the music video that accompanied it, which many consider a moment in pop culture. The clip was unexpectedly filmed in a studio filled with candies and sweets, rather than the ‘Golden beach’ mentioned in the song: in fact, the singer told MTV that she wanted to create a whole different (and edible) world where California Gurls could be the stars. Thus ‘Candyfornia’ was born.

In the music video, Katy is a game piece venturing through the colourful paths of the board game to save several women held captive by ‘Sugar Daddy’ (Snoop Dogg). Like the curious Alice in Wonderland, Katy is intrigued by all the candy-like nature surrounding her – such as ice creams, cloudy cotton candy and lollipops – as she has to overcome the many obstacles thrown at her, but particularly the mean gummy bears. There were many references to California, such as Sunset Boulevard, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Sign and the West Coast beach.

The flashy costumes and extravagant wigs became part of the 2010s pop music culture and a source of inspiration, with fans even recreating their favourite looks: throughout the clip, Katy is seen with various outfits starting from the one made out of candies with a light purple wig. This one was the preferred costume for both kids and young adults to wear for a themed party or even Halloween. It became a trend on the Internet and is still now referenced in beauty and design tutorials. The other two big looks were the glitter shorts with a ‘cupcake-made top’ – which raised some critics because of their inappropriate placement – and the red Wonder Woman-like costume. These retro aesthetics were also used for the album cover, promotional posters and live performances. Those looks surely were sexy and cute at the same time, but they reflected the ‘Fine, fresh, fierce’ attitude of Californian women. For instance, many TV shows and movies offer cameos of the popular looks seen in the music video, such as Glee (season 2).

After a decade, the song remains a classic in pop music and it may have some competition incoming, as Katy Perry is set to release the lead single for her fifth untitled studio album, ‘Daisies’, this week.
