Being released on the 8th of October 2024 is collab of the year, Savage X Diesel. Teased on Instagram three days ago, this collaboration between two fashion favourites is set to dominate October.
From sneak peak at the design stage on Instagram, these new looks combine sexy and fun, allowing loungewear to be redefined in these new designs. Stepping into the archives that inspired the new collection are iconic old school Diesel pieces that showcase denim, rips, mesh, and acid wash in an ode to the 90s.

These blue and denim edits can be seen in essence in the new Savage X collection with the first design appearing to have a light washed blue material.

December 8^th marks an exciting day as the limited-edition capsule clothing collection from Champion and hip-hop legends, Beastie Boys, drops. The collaboration celebrates 30-years of Beastie Boys’ studio album, Check Your Head, and delves back into the iconic 90s scene of hip-hop and fashion. The band’s iconic third album, released in 1992, was a sign of the times for New York’s hip-hop environment. This collaboration will allow us to step back in time and experience the nostalgia of 90s music and fashion, while living in the present.

The collection will be globally available from the 8^th and will feature variations of the iconic Champion Reverse Weave sweatshirt as well as t-shirts in black, white, and grey colourways. The 17-piece collection will also take influence from the band, the album, and the hip-hop scene of 1990s New York.

Both Champion and Beastie Boys were significant shapers of the 1990s and so this collaboration could not be better fitted. What better way to reminisce, or experience the decade for the first time by exploring what the 90s inspired limited-edition range has to offer? The hip-hop culture of the 90s went hand-in-hand with Champion, as during this time they produced all NBA uniforms as well as being a brand with huge streetwear influence. It is impossible to talk about the history of fashion, the Rockstar years of the 90s, and not refer to Schiffer – her beauty, countless catwalks, daring campaigns, and experience have influenced the fashion and modelling scene of today. But the supermodel hasn’t stopped influencing it, this time however she has decided to do it from behind the scenes. Claudia Schiffer has now invited us to look at the photography that marked the 1990s with Captivate! – an exhibition in Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf and its accompanying coffee-table book. 

Captivate! is a chance to experience from Schiffer’s eyes, the 90s “golden era” through her own archive; to see what her favourite fashion visuals were, or how the photographs that didn’t make it to the covers and stands look like, but also appreciate the essays and words from the fashion pioneers she had the chance to work with. 

Claudia Schiffer opened up to us about all of this and more, if you want to dive into her intentions when curating this book and exhibition check out our interview with her below. 

What inspired you to work on Captivate?

Firstly, I really like the word Captivate!. The book and exhibition are about fashion photography in the 1990s and great images do ‘captivate’ the imagination and become part of the pop consciousness. 

Since the beginning of my career, I have collected fashion images and worked and learned from true masters – Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh included – and my personal collection forms the basis of the book and exhibition. I wanted to encapsulate the vision of fashion that helped captivate and shape the perspective of a generation. 

What does this book and exhibition represent for you and your career? 

I have worked with such extraordinary, incredible people and I’m enjoying the different avenues my career has taken including roles where I am designing or curating collections, which felt like a natural next step for me.  Working with the team at the Kuntspalast and with the contributors to the book including Carine Roitfeld, Ellen Von Unwerth and Christine Arp, has been amazing. I’ve learnt a lot and I always want to be learning.

What would you like your followers and fans to get out of Captivate? Is there a specific message you’re trying to transmit through the photographs and stories that will be told?

First and foremost, the impact of the pandemic has severely affected the economic health of the arts and culture sector across the globe. Galleries, institutions, studios, and the people who work in both the public and private spheres are struggling for survival. My primary hope is that Captivate! both the exhibition and the catalogue attract a wide audience to the Kunstpalast and boost a love of fashion and photography. The experience of attending a show in real-time is unbeatable and the coffee table book brings the exhibition to anyone around the world who can’t attend. 

What was your favourite aspect of working on Captivate? And how challenging was it to go through with this project throughout the pandemic? 

It took time and a lot of patience – I mean there were literally thousands of images to choose from. And because I wanted to show the numerous formats of fashion photography in the pre-digital age – from fine art prints to Polaroids, contact sheets, fashion magazines, to campaigns and model cards – the selection was extensive. I wanted to also create strong contrasts between iconic covers shots, runway imagery and candid backstage snaps. 

What made it? What didn’t? I always asked myself is this quintessentially 90s? and does the image truly represent the individual photographer’s eye? I also wanted to celebrate the teams of photographers, models, stylists, hair and makeup artists, and art directors that collaborated to make fashion happen. Where the 1980s were defined by perfectionist high glamour, the 90s was about energy, reality and personality, the show also captures that big shift. 

How do the images that will be shown in Captive differentiate from the current fashion photography landscape? 

The 1990s was the last decade of the analogue era so everything was shot on film and tests were in the form of Polaroids to gauge light, composition, and colour. I wanted these formats as well as unseen and backstage images. Today, the edit happens on the screen and imagery can be consumed instantly via social media. In the 1990s, the magazines were like the bibles of fashion, with every cover and page eagerly dissected. Budgets were much bigger and literally, a location shoot could last for over a week – so many friendships were formed on these trips.

What do you think about the evolution from the pre-digital age to the digital one? How has it influenced the fashion and modelling world? And which one do you prefer? 

I think the industry is fundamentally the same, but it has grown beyond my wildest imagination. There are more collections, brands, the pace is faster and social media has had a huge impact. It’s been great for marketing fashion and beauty products, and for models, social media is a superb way to manage your own exposure. The flipside of the big exposure is perhaps the pressure to share everything with everybody. In the 1990s, you could still have a private life.

Since the birth of social media, fashion has witnessed a big sea change.  What’s interesting to see is the rise of the influencer. There’s so much talent today that is diverse in race, age and increasingly, size. Individuality and personal style and expression are being championed like never before. Non-professional models have become a vital source of inspiration for their peer groups as well as for designers.  It’s so healthy to see such diversity in faces and styles. 

And models now have a voice – they are true polymaths, entering fields such as activism, sustainability, fashion design, technology, wellbeing, acting and they can enjoy multi-track careers. I think the supermodels provided the template. There is no ‘ageing’ outlook at Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, or Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaia, Georgina Grenville, Carolyn Murphy and myself – we all continue to work. For me, curating a show and editing a book represents a challenging and fulfilling new avenue.  

In regards to the modelling industry and your career, what would you say has been your biggest achievement? And will it be covered in Captivate?

The big task of editing Captivate! made me appreciate the 90s and the extraordinary creativity. I do miss the camaraderie and the adventures, but you can never ‘repeat’ such a time. Some of my best memories include my first show, which was for Karl and Chanel and was very special. It was the pivotal moment in my career that transformed me from a shy teenager into a supermodel. Then there were Gianni’s shows, which were like rock concerts. We’d walk to an amazing Prince track with hundreds of photographers lining the catwalk, only to see him sitting there at the front row. For the exhibition, Donatella re-created a brilliant azure blue dress which I wore in the A/W 94 couture show: it’s divine.  By contrast, Valentino shows were like stepping into a fairy-tale world while Dolce & Gabbana’s evoked the exuberant Italian dream.  You really have to step into character and perform:  the runway experience is like nothing else.

How would you describe Captivate in 3 words? 

Captivating! Joyous!  A revelation! 

Are you working on any other future projects? 

I’m very lucky to love what I do, so design collaborations and curating roles felt like a natural next step for me. In addition to the book and Kuntspalast Captivate! fashion photography show that I curated, I have a glassware and ceramics collaboration with the wonderful Portuguese heritage brands Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro. The collections (launched last year) are inspired by my love for nature and there are new ranges coming out in 2022. I so enjoy learning about the craftsmanship behind these makers and drawing up shapes and motifs.

I also have just collaborated with the lovely brand Réalisation Par, which I discovered via my daughter Clementine. The range is out now and is very much inspired by the 90s and the kind of pieces I used to wear on a daily basis. I looked into my archive collection and found silk slip dresses, daisy prints and a classic black and white microdot – these finds were the starting point.

The post An Interview With Claudia Schiffer: Captivate! Reminisces Fashion Photography That Marked The ‘90s appeared first on Voir Fashion.

From Nathy Peluso’s feature in the campaign, we are taking major inspiration from the chunky highlights and simple glam makeup of the rising Latin artist. Closing a flip phone with dramatically long, bright orange nails in the video, the model wears a block-coloured bikini coverup, splitting to reveal knee-length light, blue denim shorts. The shorts have been roughly cut to produce frayed edges, contrasting the elegant accents of dripping jewels. The light denim, slip-on mule heels and flowing cape-like top brings together lavish Y2K sparkles with the loud gold accessories and flowing fabrics of the 1970s. 

The show opens, like the campaign video, with classic, recognizable beachwear. Various shades of blue, patterns of waves, and flying birds are incorporated into the early outfits. Knitwear accessories have fun patterns of seaside scenes which emphasize beach holiday themes. Textured fabrics also make early appearances alongside beach looks. A rough, towel-like fabric is used to create an asymmetrical mini dress, paired with various woven bag accessories.

Slowly the simplistic beachwear turns into bold eveningwear, influenced by 1970s disco. A matching men’s suit with a black shirt printed with gold chains is paired with platform sandals and oversized sunglasses for a disco-ready look. This look revamps the signature Italian suits associated with Milan Fashion Week into a lighthearted, statement piece made for the dance floor. The matching women’s look consisted of a glittering halter-top and wide-leg trousers with GCDS monogrammed earrings and a round tortoise-shell handbag, looking equally disco-ready.

Continuing the journey through fashionable periods, a series of light blue denim looks appear with 1990s references and Y2K crystal detailing. The blinged-out circular bikini top monogrammed with GCDS instantly recalls the iconic teeny tiny Chanel bikini from Spring 1996. The low-waisted baggy jeans also recall 1990s aesthetics from American streetwear. Moving onto sweetheart necklines and an asymmetrical denim mini dress, the light-washed denim looks transition from the 1990s into crystallised early 2000s with sweet choker necklaces and chunky platform heels.

GCDS takes us on a time-traveling journey through fashionable decades for their Spring/Summer 2022 collection. From natural summer beachwear to 1970s disco, Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel, the sparkling 2000s, and finally, consideration of what future fashion will look like. GCDS showcases the cyclical nature of the trend cycle, whilst providing chic and timeless pieces that have continued to trend since they were originally established in fashion.

We are all bored in the house and do not have anything to do, besides baking banana bread, doing home workouts, and watching everything Netflix has to offer. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and therefore it is the perfect occasion to get some outfit inspirations for the return to normal, for those ‘after quarantine’ looks quasi. And let us be honest, what better way to do so than by watching our favourite classics, it is like killing two birds with one stone – getting entertainment and inspirations.

Our one and only Miss Fine must not be missing here. I mean just think of it: was there even just one episode she did not slay in? We cannot think of one either. And since we are already talking about television, the 90s and some amazing fashion, we have to mention our girl Cher Horowitz. It is safe to say that there is much more to be added when it comes to the fashion of 90s television shows, but let us start with the ones mentioned above.

Whereas The Nanny dressed way more flamboyant, Cher always looked neat and young, however, both had amazingly coordinated outfits. Fran always wore some great matching sets in all sorts of colours, materials and prints. And they can totally be worn today. Actually, they are a big trend and something for every kind of taste and occasion: from business appropriate, to cool, chic and even comfy – latest since lockdown started, matching loungewear sets are a must in our wardrobes.

Matching sets will always make you look put together and effortless. They are so easy, just two pieces but they will instantly make you look expensive and chic, even if it is just a simple loungewear combo. Also, Cher had a preference for a matching attire, but also some of her other looks can be rocked today.

Blouses in Organza. They are light and sheer, girly yet sexy, and definitely way more fun than a normal cotton or silk blouse. They create volume and add that little extra to your outfit and they feel like a touch of nothing once put on which makes them perfect for the warmer months.

I loathe what I remember of the 90s: I was a young child back then, experimenting with differing styles and grappling with my sense of identity. Faced with the crucible of growth that was the 00s, I quickly developed a taste for a language that was boundary-pushing and screamed against the grain of conformity. That said, I am now able to dissect the vast and diverse influx of 90s nostalgia that we are faced with, and ask the question: Why should we give a f*** about the 90s?

We can’t escape the 90s. 90s-inspiried fashion dominates street style; the Marc Jacobs SS19 Resort Collection is a redux of his seminal 1993 Perry Ellis Collection. Contemporary chart music is laden with tracks pining for the decade – think Busted’s ‘Nineties,’ with a video shot by Rankin, or Charlie xCx and Troye Sivan’s ‘1999.’

A Diverse Decade

But you’d be remiss to think that the 90s was solely Nirvana band tees and butterfly hairclips that many retailers love to bastardise in the name of a vintage throwback. In fact, the 90s represents the most diverse era in recent fashion history, where the only point of having rules, was to break them.

The decade, in all of its diversity, was both polarised and polarising. In the space of a few years, Paris, New York and Milan were intoxicated by excess, in love with an opulence that was seen on a Versace or Lacroix runway, and then discarded it all in the name of Helmut Lang’s minimalism, which was very much a rejection of decorative detail. Martin Margiela’s AW 1998 Ready-to-Wear Collection echoes this idea, with a pursuit of simplicity seen in its clean lines, luxury fabrics (such as cashmere and lambskin) and by capturing a tension between elegance and normalcy.

A War on Herion Chic

Undeniably, one of the decade’s most contro- versial trends was that of ‘heroin chic,’ which brought with it a moral panic that prompted the White House to condemn the fashion industry and its open celebration of drug culture. We only need to recall the waifish figure of Kate Moss in a Calvin Klein ad to evoke this image.

Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby

90s fashion made other eras appear compara- tively puritan. There’s no denying that the decade was gripped by sex. But the 90’s sex obsession was more political than it was libidinous. In a period when the artistic industries were deci- mated by the AIDS crisis, sex and its deathly possibilities were made tangible. Jean Paul Gaultier eroticised the nude body in his naked body suits. He flirted with fetish in his French Cancan collection of 1992, where he presented his models in hound’s-tooth gimp suits. The decade was breast-obsessed, marking the dawn of the Wonderbra and the arresting image of Mugler’s metallic bras, which contrasted sensu- ality with a chilling discomfort. Who can deny that the faces of the decade were arousing sex symbols, lusted for, and illustrious – Claudia Schiffer, Laetitia Casta, Naomi Campbell.

Infinite Fantasy

The fashion industry not only reached new heights, but also strived for what is beyond the stratosphere. We were spirited to a fantastical realm, wherein designers were unafraid to make their couture cosmic. Just picture Thierry Mugler’s snake women, walking down the runway like celestial sorceresses. Yves Saint Laurent took us to the harem when Kate Moss became an odalisque for his Opium campaign. Comme des Garçons slashed the gender binary with the fantastical androgyny of models that pre-empted the queer influ- ences in today’s fashion.

The 90s Impact Answered

90s fashion, in all of its variety, was characterised by a single question – what would a designer do next? There was a palpable anticipation. Today, we only wish to discover the next great enfant terrible, rather than see the highest echelon outdo their oeuvre. In an attempt to stay ahead of the ever-oscillating curve, the creators of the 90s demonstrated a total disregard for what was acceptable. Even today, with the surveillance of social media, collective tastes veer towards the temperate.

We should give a f*** about the 90s because the decade reminds us not to give a f***. It is by breaking rules that we change them for the better.
