Shakira Revisits Her Legacy with Spotify Anniversaries

Pies Descalzos and Fijación Oral get a luxury revival – with a little help from Ed Sheeran and Beéle

In a digital age obsessed with virality and reinvention, Shakira just reminded us what timeless truly sounds like.

This week, the Colombian icon teamed up with Spotify to honour two of her most defining albums — 1995’s Pies Descalzos and 2005’s Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 & 2 — with a special edition of the Spotify Anniversaries series. The campaign fuses intimate storytelling, rare live performances, and new reworks of her most beloved tracks, showcasing the enduring influence of her bilingual discography.

A Global Love Letter

It’s been 30 years since Pies Descalzos introduced the world to a 17-year-old Shakira with a guitar and a sharp pen. The album, led by cult classics like “Estoy Aquí” and “Antología”, opened the doors for her across Latin America and laid the foundation for a career that would eventually dominate global charts.

A decade later, she released Fijación Oral (Vol. 1 in Spanish and Vol. 2 in English), home to megahits like “La Tortura”, “Las de la Intuición” and “Hips Don’t Lie” — the track that made her hips a pop culture moment of their own.

The New Era of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’

To celebrate the anniversaries, Shakira reimagined “Hips Don’t Lie” with Colombian artist Beéle and British pop star Ed Sheeran, offering a fresh spin on the iconic hit for a new generation. The exclusive performance, recorded as part of the Spotify Anniversaries series, is now live on Spotify, alongside an EP of reworked tracks that honour the original magic while reintroducing it with a modern twist.

The series also includes behind-the-scenes interviews where Shakira reflects on the emotional impact of both albums, and how they’ve evolved alongside her fanbase. With Fijación Oral now being streamed by a predominantly Gen Z audience, the music has found new life in an entirely different era.

Timeless, Not Trendy

While many artists chase the algorithm, Shakira is here to remind us that longevity is its own kind of flex. With more than 6.1 billion global streams (nearly 1 billion in the U.S. alone), the enduring relevance of these two albums speaks to her range — and her refusal to be boxed in.

This isn’t just a nostalgic look back. It’s a masterclass in how to age your artistry like fine wine — blending legacy with innovation and Latin roots with global ambition.
