We can try and deny it all we like, but it’s becoming ever more apparent that it’s time to get out our coats. With hundreds of different styles out there, today we are drawing attention to the most classic of them all, the trusty trench coat. While some may think of a trench as that boring beige thing regretfully thrown on for a dog walk in the rain, that couldn’t be further from the truth. A fashion icon in its own right, the trench coat is a well-loved piece of protection that has traveled through the eras and still stands today as one of the most popular of its kind.
From the ultimate classics worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to the new and updated versions worn by modern-day stars including Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner, high street brands and designers alike are continuously creating adaptations of the trench making it a true style must-have, whatever your fashion. Trenches are timeless after all, so if the classic isn’t your go-to, the infamous trench can be your new best friend with just a little twist.
The Classic
For a great classic trench, it must be beige, longline, with a waist-cinching belt, oh and preferably by Burberry! The Burberry trench was a streetwear staple back in the ’90s and with new iterations created by the brand every so often, it remains that way today. Taking inspiration from the label that arguably took the trench and made it a staple, lots of brands have chosen to keep in line with the Burberry style guidelines when creating their own.
Black Leather Trench
Keeping it classic in style but going rogue when it comes to fabric, these black leather trench coats give off extreme, The Matrix, vibes. Loved by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Bella Hadid, as well as becoming a wardrobe staple for those fashion-forward Gen Z-ers, this heavy-duty trench exudes domination, strength, and all things girl power.
Bold and Bright
A trench coat is sure to make you stand out, but add a pop of colour and you will appear as the only one in the room. From sunny yellows to bubblegum pinks, a coloured take on the ultimate classic is a fun way to spruce up your style.

If the weather doesn’t require a full-length trench or you simply want to show off what’s on your bottom half, then a cropped style jacket is a great take on the original. Keeping in line with the buttons and belts, these types of jackets tell the same story, just in a slightly different way.

For the ultra extravagant, if a trench in its original form is just not enough for you to really make a stand, then elevate your style points with a sprinkle of something special. Opt for a sequin embellished number or a statement metallic piece to wear this classic with a twist.
