Back to Black: Saint Laurent AW’18

Saint Laurent’s Autumn 2018 runway revealed to Paris fashion week that lack of colour doesn’t mean lack of interest. Who needs the typical Autumn colours when you can fill your wardrobe with the darkest of shades? Saint Laurent made those autumn leaf colour schemes fade to black, and we’re not mad about it.

With many pieces that could be worn straight off the runway, Anthony Vaccarello created every fashionable Goth’s dream; a wondrous concoction of velvet, leather and lace in of course, all black.

Wide, 80’s style shoulders graced the runway, paired with the shortest of shorts, the models’ never ending legs strutting an array of highly desirable after ankle boots. There was no lack of sparkle either, a consistent array of sequins appeared throughout the show affixing a twinkle to the darkness as if stars in a twilight sky.

Chunky boots added an edge to the collection, the trend of ankle boots thankfully back for the autumn/winter season. Vaccarello again coming through with the Goth appeal, with a selection of platform leather and pointed suede boots, both accompanied by buckle details that would look at home in any alternatively inclined individuals wardrobe.

Many of the outfits paired with simple black heels could easily appear more toned down- these garments able to pull off a variety of aesthetics. But who wouldn’t want to wear Saint Laurent straight off the runway appearing a mysterious soul, a sultry creature?

The end of the show saw the spirit of the 80’s party dress revived, as models clad in floral, fully sequined dresses strode the runway, giving promise to the winter party season’s sought after sparkle.

For those wishing to materialize an enigmatic character, joy would be found at a glance of the head-wear showcased in this collection; wide brimmed hats that cover half of the face certainly have no problem creating a dark mystery about any wearer. It’s safe to say this collection convinced us that a wardrobe devoid of colour isn’t a bad thing, and that we can still be ready for the Autumn/Winter season cloaked in black, as if shadows of ourselves.
