Lily Rose Depp and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye star in this very messed up romantic drama set in Hollywood. Created by Tesfaye and the mastermind behind Euphoria, Sam Levison, we’re expecting that this gritty drama will show us the glamour of stardom as well as reveal the dark underbelly of Tinseltown. The show is produced by A24 who have brought us some of the best films of last year such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, X, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Aftersun.

The show’s been in development since 2021 but it was revealed (perhaps accidentally!) by HBO’s Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys in a livestream during the Global Demand Awards that after the fourth season of The Succession we can expect to receive The Idol on our screens. As The Succession season four will run until the end of May we’re hoping The Weeknd’s brainchild will premiere in sometime in June.

The HBO original focuses on Jocelyn, played by Depp, a gorgeous young pop idol struggling to reclaim her title as the sexiest star in America after a nervous breakdown causes her last tour to be cancelled. When the mysterious and enigmatic self-help guru Tedros, played by the Weeknd, catches her eye in a club, the two embark on a fiery love affair, which will either save them or break them (our money’s on break).

Musician Troye Sivan, star of Shiva Baby and Bodies Bodies Bodies Rachel Sennott, rising actress Suzanna Son, Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, and BLACKPINK‘s Jennie (in her acting debut) will all play a part in bringing The Idol to life.

In an interview with Elle last November, Depp said the biggest challenge when embodying Jocelyn was “understanding how alone you can feel, even when everybody’s watching you”. Pop idols Madonna, Britney Spears, and Mariah Carey were all used as reference points for Depp’s transformation. The actress also said she felt blessed to be working with Levinson and Tesfaye who are, “two people who make me feel incredibly safe and protected”. She called Tesfaye, “a really good friend who’s had my back”, saying, “We’ve gone on this wild ride together. It was a first for both of us in a lot of ways”.

So far, the three teaser trailer suggests the show will be packed with flashy convertibles, bright lights, sparkling mansions, slinky outfits, plenty of booze, sexy strip teases, many many drugs, and a crazy amount of sexual tension between the two leads. So basically, everything we love in a TV show. June can’t come soon enough.

The success and popularity of Hispanic music is no news to us, the global music landscape has always been characterised by their lyricism and catchy rhythm. Since the days of Daddy Yankee and Don Omar and to this day with the growing success of Bad Bunny.

However, Hispanic songs aren’t exclusive to this genre, with the evolution of various artists in these past years we have increasingly become aware of the expansive talent that diversifies it. A new generation of talent that has reached audiences across the world with hits in the pop charts and beyond.

Here is a selection of our current favourite Hispanic artists to add to your music radar.

C.Tangana

C. Tangana, previously known as Crema, has been marking Spanish music since 2006 with his hybrid take on Spanish melodies and culture. The Madrid born and raised artist presents us with his romantic affinity with music through the combination of his passion for Spanish folklore and modern rap. The result of which are incredible songs like ‘Tú me dejaste de querer’ and ‘Nunca estoy’ that have transported his fame to the international scene.

His forthcoming album ‘El Madrileño’, about to be released on the 26th of February, will continue to nourish C.Tangana’s artistic evolution. His music, visuals and narrative, will continue to honour the heritage of Spanish music through the surprising collaborations with artists that, like him, have had a strong impact on the history of Hispanic music. Artists like Andres Calamaro and the Gypsy Kings will help him create new and contrasting sounds born through the appreciation of traditional ones.

This upcoming project will undoubtedly showcase C.Tangana’s talent and maybe even beat his own record of best debut in Spanish history with ‘Tú me dejaste de querer’ and 1.6 million Spotify views in only 24hours.

Kablito

Kablito, aka Karen Freire, is an Ecuadorian artist now residing in Los Angeles that made it to our music radar with her smooth R&B sounds and relatable lyricism.

As she explains her music is a contemporary mix of inspiration gathered from all her favourite R&B artists from Prince to Jack Swing, and her musical take of South American culture and its distinct elements like drama soap operas.

It’s not a common combination nor source of inspiration for a musician but it is one that is worth our time. With her EP Telenovela and multiple hits such as “Vete de Aquí” and “Yo Nunca Te Quise” Kablito entered an industry (the Latinx music industry) that was often considered only for its traditional dancing hits and recentred the international listeners’ attention to the contemporary music that enriches it.

She’s an urban voice representing change and becoming her own representative figure in the music industry with evolving sounds and incredible collaborations.

Bad Bunny

If you don’t know Bad Bunny by now you’re not listening to the right music…But, if you’re like us and love him and everything he does we’re here to talk about him once again.

The Puerto Rican artist known due to his eccentric take on Latin music, genre versatility and joyful personality is one of the key figures in the revitalisation and appreciation of modern Latin music. Not only he creates songs that immediately boost your mood and make you want to forget about everything else, like “Dàkiti”, but he also challenges everything that is outdated and embraces change and innovation, as done in the music video of “Yo perreo sola” by becoming his own muse.

His latest and unexpected album “El Último Tour del Mundo” demonstrated the different sides of Bad Bunny’s music; his ability to work on any genre and come up with diverse songs that always represent his artistic essence. The music video for one of our favourite songs of the album, ‘La Noche de Anoche’ featuring Rosalía has just been released, it’s a visual serenade that lets us appreciate the chemistry of these two artists accompanied by the complexity of their lyrics and beautiful imagery.

In the case that video wasn’t enough and leaves you wanting more, don’t worry, we will get more of Bad Bunny in this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live.

Sebastian Cortes

Sebastián Cortés is making his way into the world of music as a singer, composer and producer. Focused on creating something different that expands the possibilities of niche-music and artists in the Spanish scene.

The Madrid born and raised artist has crafted a style of his own, which fits in with Lofi-pop and Indie sounds that resonate with us as an audience due to the quality of his unprecedented style and the catch of his lyricism.

It’s not a further extension of commercial pop or another standardised version of indie music, it’s something more. His raw voice, meaningful stories and even laid-back production provide us with a genuine alternative to Spanish pop and allows us to sit back and enjoy Sebastián Cortés hit songs like “Dos x Tres” and “T la sudo”.

He may not be the most mainstream of artists but his releases have reached a wide audience exceeding 100,000 listeners on Spotify across different genres, and all by his merit without the support of any label but due to his art. We believe he is an artist to keep up with and cannot wait to see what he has in store for us and the Hispanic music landscape.

Nathy Peluso

Nathy Peluso, an artist criticised for her daring approach to music but loved by us for it.

The Argentinian artist has carved her path in the Latinx music industry by breaking boundaries and exploring musical aspects that many have been afraid to do until now.

We became familiar with her work back in 2017 following the release of her hit single ‘Corashe’ and have been keeping up with her incredible trajectory ever since. Her music has everything that we, Voir, love; upbeat sounds, strong lyrics, impactful voice and eccentric style. Something that we had the chance to admire even more in her third album “Calambre” with songs such as “Buenos Aires” and “Delito”. The latter which has just taken a visual form with the recent release of its official music video and gained international recognition by artists such as Cardi B.

Yendry

YENDRY is a Dominican-born singer who uses her music as a mirror to reflect the realities she faced while travelling the world and adapting to two different cultures.

We came across YENDRY’s work in her performance for the COLORS show but her career took off much earlier, the 27 years singer and songwriter gained popularity in 2012 after participating in the Italian X-Factor. The participation in the Italian talent show became acclaimed due to her strong vocals and particular musical choices which were further appreciated in 2014 when she became the leading voice of Materianera and was part of their first EP “Supernova”.

YENDRY’s music evolved with the years and so did our appreciation of it. Her hit singles “Barrio” and “Nena” are the ones that caught our attention, these, to us, are the ones that encompass her path into finding her niche and that represent her will to include and represent her roots and culture through her music.

As you will be able to appreciate when listening to her different releases the young artist doesn’t solely sing in Spanish but tries to communicate her message and style using the combination of various languages, therefore creating a particular characteristic in her craft.

A characteristic that also translates into her influences, taking equal inspiration from Bachata to R&B and including her favourite elements of both to create her trail.

Louta

Louta cannot be described exclusively as a singer. The young Argentinian artist is a singer, songwriter, performer and music producer… but most importantly his artist that likes to communicate with this audience, he’s a stage bug and many call him.

Louta doesn’t just perform his music, he makes an artistic proposition out of his songs, one that his viewers are obliged to listen to and take the time to interact with. His songs are a dialogue with the public that goes beyond the entertaining role of music, they’re a discussion accompanied by innovative music.

Why innovative you may ask… Louta is a multifaceted artist that has succeeded in incorporating diverse genres into his projects, from electronic music to traditional cumbia and many more. But this music as catchy as it is by itself is always presented alongside a specific choice of visuals and shows that surpass our acoustic expectations.

He’s not the most known artist in the Hispanic music industry, however, he’s one that will change your perception of Latin music and will make you fall in love with his intimate songs like “Media hora” and the more chaotic ones like “Alto visto”.

Manuel Medrano

Romanticism in soothing Latin pop, this is how we would describe Manuel Medrano’s music to the ones that aren’t familiar with it. The Colombian singer and songwriter has built himself an impressive career following the classic and rather traditional beauty of Latin pop music.

His most popular songs, that also happen to be our favourite ones too, “Bajo el agua”, “Si pudiera”, and “Una y otra vez” have attracted over 4.5 monthly million listeners over the world on platforms such as Spotify. The simplicity in his music is what makes it so pleasant, his laid-back approach allows us to directly focus on his incredible vocal talent and minimal acoustic sounds, letting the music speak for itself.

Unlike other Latin artists of the moment that try to include as many elements as possible in their projects Manuel Medrano’s style relies on the quality of his sounds and the impact of his voice. Something that is becoming underappreciated nowadays but that is always captivating to see, especially by a renown artist like him.

Rosalía

Rosalía, the singer who transformed the sound of Spanish music throughout the world. The acclaimed artist who has now become a sought-after collaborator in the music industry has brought to light her passion for Flamenco in the incorporation of contemporary pop music.

We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t appreciate Rosalía’s talent or straight up isn’t obsessing over he music, and fairly so. The Catalan singer owns her originality in every sense, she presented to the world one of the most traditional aspects of Spanish culture in everything but a traditional way. This originality is centred in her music, through the never-ending reinvention of current sounds and visual stimuli she became one of our favourite personalities in the global music industry.

It is no wonder why so many artists have opted to collaborate with the Catalan singer, from Bad Bunny to James Blake, proving the reach of her sounds to every imaginable audience from every part of the world. Check out one of our favourite projects of hers below.

Anybody who has social media has inevitably seen the viral #FreeBritney movement: conspiracy theories, celebrity support, court cases and legal enforcements. Following the #FreeBritney movement is equivalent to falling down a rabbit hole, eventually landing in a messy, complicated, conspiracy rumour mill. In a nutshell, the movement is fighting for the release of Britney Spears from her conservator agreement. What is most difficult about this movement, beyond our own emotional attachment, is our powerlessness – no hashtag, video, campaign or protest can infiltrate through Britney’s the layers of legal ‘protection’, publicists, family and her social media façade. To Britney Spears’ ride-or-die fanbase, those who are currently campaigning for her release, this is simply an obstacle to overcome; outside of the movement, however, it reminds us how little we truly know about Britney and her lifestyle and, consequently, how wrong we could be.

Back in 2008, Britney momentously shaved her head. Followingly, the world went wild, memes were made, jokes were made, and even today photos from this moment circulate the internet as a pop-reference, for example ‘If I had to rate my stress, I’d say I’m pretty close to 2007 Britney’ and ‘If Britney can make it through 2007, I can make it through today’. Yet today we know this is an ignorant and insensitive joke, since Britney’s shaved head has since come to signpost her struggles with Bipolar Disorder and an episode of mania. It is this point which many fans pinpoint as the beginning of Britney’s conservatorship with her father (in 2008), one of the moments which led to the transference of Britney’s autonomy over her estate, assets and business affairs, to Jamie Spears. Notably, this was intended to be a temporary response to Britney’s declining mental health. However, to her fans, it is a red flag, an inhumane form of control, since Britney – now 38 – appears healthy, happy and in the prime of her life. But remember, this is through a screen: everything we know is from carefully contrived tweets, Instagram posts and TikToks and, although Britney is said to have freedom over her social media presence, we are unable to distinguish between the truth, the fabricated and the lies. Are we informed enough to make such strong judgements?

Fast forward to September 2^nd, 2020, Britney’s lawyer fought for the legal proceedings regarding a conservator to be made public as opposed to hidden and undercover. Later in November 4^th 2020, Britney filed an official motion to regain autonomy, removing her father as a co-conservator. Followingly, November 10^th, 2020, the judge denied her request. Reading into these legal events, the #FreeBritney movement has gained both speed and legitimacy because it is difficult to conclude anything other than Britney’s unhappiness with her current arrangements.         

When taking a look at Britney Spears’ TikTok and Instagram account, it is easy to see why people believe that something isn’t right; a childlike innocence is juxtaposed to somewhat erratic and unexplained behaviour. This is the fuel for the #FreeBritney movement. On the one hand, Britney reassures her followers ‘I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life’ in an Instagram video, but on the other, fans claim this doesn’t add up.

On TikTok, her most viewed video – having been played 29.5M times – shows Britney twirling around with a bouquet of flowers, explained in her caption as a surprise from her florist which she ‘just had to SHARE’. Initially, Britney is glowing, smiling and dancing with the flowers however the video progresses so that we watch her walk back and forth, from left to right, on a continuous loop whilst posing at the camera. Expectedly, the comment section is wild and ranges from accusations of a mental health episode and secret clues and hints from Britney herself regarding what many deem her captivity. To watch the video is without doubt confusing, perhaps even uncomfortable, but what it neglects to tell us is the reason and purpose behind the video. It could be that the #FreeBritney movement is reading into something which isn’t there; it could be that the #FreeBritney movement is on point, and Britney does need helping. Perhaps it is both, and perhaps it is none: again, the difficulty is that we just don’t know.

More than 15 years later, The New York Times’ ‘Framing Britney Spears’ documentary has resurfaced the movement, as society is re-introduced to the private life of their forgotten sweetheart. In response, publications, celebrities and fans echo ‘We’re sorry Britney’, recognising their toxic part in Britney’s breakdown. On the 12^th February 2020, we were told of the court’s denial of Jamie Spears’ request for additional control over Britney’s finances, insisting instead he shares the role with (court appointed) Bessemer Trust.

Although we may try to figure everything out, we cannot. No matter how many articles we read, videos we watch or posts we find, any viewpoints we might form will remain only a theory until we gain more understanding and access into the life of Britney Spears. Until then, it is important to remember that regardless of your view on #FreeBritney, the media must change to become more responsible and considerate. Britney Spears, undeniably, is only a human being: a woman who rose to fame as a vulnerable, impressionable 11-year-old. The ignorant unsensitivity with which the paparazzi, tabloids, gossip magazines and society treated Britney is perhaps the most prominent take-away to this story. Until this changes, the freedom of Britney – and her fellow celebrities – will never be possible.

Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You, ground-breaking masterpiece that it is, didn’t get any nominations. Not one. And even Emily In Paris writer Deborah Copaken is up in arms about it.

I May Destroy You deals with the extremely complicated aftermath of rape in a way that we haven’t seen before. Adding humour, human connection and incredible character development, Coel created a narrative which was ground-breaking not just amongst the film and tv produced last year, but the amongst that of the last decade.  

Sadly, although there is a unanimous outrage that I May Destroy You wasn’t afforded even a single Golden Globe nomination, no one seems to be surprised.

This is because even though the message Black Lives Matter was held aloft proudly by so many last summer, every writer room in Hollywood has over 91% white showrunners, 80% of which are male (Color of Change, 2017).

I May Destroy You put contemporary black culture to the forefront of a television show that we haven’t seen before, and Hollywood’s Foreign Press Association either failed to grasp the importance of this, or worse, purposefully ignored it. What’s more, Micheala Coel wrote, codirected, executive produced and acted in the show, a momentous achievement that critic’s have raved about, and yet has passed by unacknowledged by the Golden Globes.

Bringing to the forefront issues such as sexual abuse, trauma, race and sexuality, I May Destroy You sparked discussions across social media when it aired last June that people hadn’t necessarily even thought about before. On Rotten Tomatoes, a review site known for being hard to rank highly on, I May Destroy You has a score of 98%. 

That is not to say that the Golden Globes nominations haven’t made some steps forward in terms of diversity – Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Kaluuya and Steve McQueen were all rightfully nominated – however there is an insidious clue as to why their projects may have been more readily accepted. The stark fact is that white audiences prefer to watch stories which tackle race issues from the past, not the present. Race issues going on right now are too close for comfort. 

If we look into this further, then we could also make the observation that I May Destroy You presents a perfect illustration of how race affects the daily experiences of black people in subtle but very powerful ways. Alternatively, the plots which feature racial tension in an explicit and often violent way are more widely accredited – perhaps the idea of racism on our TV’s being black and white itself is more palatable to digest.

In a project first announced in March of 2019, by a tweet from Rosalia, the two immense talents find a dark, dreamy soundscape that compliments both artists’ style and brand while pushing both outside of their comfort zones.

The song is mostly performed in Spanish, but effortlessly drifts to English, and understanding the melancholic message of the song doesn’t require knowledge of either language, although the last line, sung by Eilish, leaves a cold and sombre impression (“If I wasn’t important then why did you waste all your poison”).

With barely any accompaniment, other than a few synths that heighten the dark and eerie tone, the harmonic winding of the two outstanding voices creates an ethereal siren song. The music video reflects this, as director Nabil places the two in darkness as the cameras pan around each singer, getting faster and more disorienting as the song escalates. It’s hypnotic and phantasmal, matching the energy of the track. The video’s styling also deserves recognition, as Billie and Rosalia sport elaborate glass manicures created by nail artist Sojin Oh, that add to the video’s dreamlike feel.

The track is featured on a new episode of the iconic HBO drama Euphoria that came out yesterday, ‘Part 2: Jules’, and fits the show well with it’s airy and celestial sound, dripped in sadness.

A lot of us have become invested in franchises and series, whether it was during lockdown or even before, binge-watching and marathons have made us emotionally attached to fictional places and characters. But when that series or franchise comes to halt, we’re often left with questions unanswered, needs unmet or just a big hole that the show used to fill. While 2021 remains unpredictable, one thing is for sure: the reboots and sequels coming out this year are something to look forward to, with some of the biggest movie franchises continuing their stories, and some old favourites coming back from the dead.

Reboots And Spin-offs

1. Daria (Jodie)

The satirical 90s teen cartoon will return this year, but not with the titular character in the spotlight. Comedy Central will bring us a spin-off, produced by and featuring Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish, The High Note), that will revolve around Daria’s smart, sarcastic friend Jodie. The reboot will be aimed at a Gen Z audience and Jodie will return as a recent college graduate, navigating the workplace, privilege and Gen Z-specific struggles, all with a narrative of wit, sarcasm and smarts.

2. Gossip Girl

We’ve all been hearing news of a Gossip Girl reboot since last year and it’s now been confirmed that the reimagined series is due to release this year. Portraits of the new cast and characters were released on the Gossip Girl Instagram page on New Year’s Day, sparking excitement for the teen drama. The new series will still be narrated by Kristen Bell and with the original creators producing the series, we just know it’ll be a hit.

3. Clueless

Much like the Daria reboot, the new, yet-to-be-titled Clueless will be a spin-off, focusing on a black supporting character. The reboot was first reported on by Variety in August, describing the new series as ‘a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sun-glasses wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong number two Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans.’, depicting the show as just as fashionable as the original, with some mystery thrown in. While release dates and details are still foggy, we know the series will air on NBCUniversal’s new streaming service Peacock.

4. iCarly – A reboot of the much loved Nickelodeon show was confirmed in December, and is set to include most of the original cast. The producer, Jay Kogen, shared that the new series will be for adults, which makes sense regarding fans of the show are all grown up now. It’s headed for the streaming platform Paramount Plus, and even with no confirmed details of it’s release or plot, we’re all excited for the classic to return.

5. James Bond (No Time To Die)

The anticipation over the new Bond film grew exponentially after each of it’s delays and is now confirmed to be released at the beginning of April this year. It was originally due to premiere in November of 2019 but with production delays, it was pushed back, then with the titular song, sung by Billie Eilish, released at the beginning of 2020, we were all excited for the film. Due to the pandemic, No Time To Die experienced several more push backs, each one sparking more excitement than the last. Hopefully, this one will stick, there’s only so many times we can have a Bond marathon in preparation.

6. A Quiet Place Part II

Another film delayed by the pandemic, the sequel to John Krasinski’s (The Office, Jack Ryan) thriller is now set to come out in April. Part II finds the Abbott Family among more than just the threat of the creatures that hunted them before. The same stars and characters will return, this time with the addition of Cillian Murphy as a main character too.

7. Spider Man 3

Tom Holland will return as Spider-man this year, in the third film of the new series in the Spider-man MCU franchise. The film will include some old supervillains from previous Spider-man eras including Jamie Foxx as Electro, and there are rumours of both previous actors, Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield, appearing. We’re excited for its release which, while not confirmed, is supposed to be near the end of the year.

8. The Matrix 4

The 4th instalment of the Matrix franchise will arrive in December of this year. Most of the leads remain the same, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are examples;  returning as Neo and Trinity. New reported cast members include Neil Patrick Harris (How I met Your Mother), Stephen Graham (This Is England) and Yayha Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman).

Perhaps one of the only saving graces to come from this year is that we got some incredible music, we got albums from some of our favourite superstars like The Weeknd and Ariana Grande, but perhaps more exciting than that is all the new faces we became acquainted with. As the year draws to a close and we (thankfully) move into 2021 we thought we’d provide you with a guide to some of the artists who are set to put their stamp on the industry for the coming years.

Greentea Peng

The self-described ‘psychedelic R&B’ singer-songwriter has had a steady year improving on the momentum she created for herself in 2019 with her breakout single ‘Downers’. Greentea is bringing something new to the UK music scene, her silky and enticing vocals are matched with thoughtful and conscious lyrics tackling topics such as gentrification and spirituality in the modern era.

The Kid LAROI

If we told you a few years ago that in the year 2020, one of hip hops most popular rappers would be a 17-year-old kid from Australia, you’d probably laugh in our face. But here we are and The Kid LAROI has taken the year by storm. With a whiny and angsty vocal style, Laroi has the ability to dominate tracks. His lyrics are catchy, and his style is perfect for the current climate of mainstream rap as he often blends classic emo with modern trap, very similarly to his former friend and label mate, Juice WRLD. With viral tracks on Tik Tok and the deluxe version of his debut album recently being released with instant commercial success, it will be no surprise to see Laroi at the top of the charts in the coming years.

Baby Keem

Being Kendrick Lamar’s cousin is a pretty good starting point to be at when embarking on a musical career, but it also comes with a lot of pressure. Luckily Baby Keem doesn’t seem to feel pressure and he’s going in the complete opposite direction to his better-known cousin. While you might expect Keem to focus on lyricism and social commentary like Kendrick, he confidently carves his own lane providing an energetic and captivating new voice in the rap game. His vocal inflections and flows are sometimes strange, however, they are always head-turning and you’ll struggle to find someone who fits into the same creative pocket as him. His biggest hit ‘ORANGE SODA’ has over 150 million plays on Spotify and we expect to see even higher numbers than that in 2021.

Mulatto

Although Mulatto may have been making in rows in the industry over the past few years, 2020 has truly been her breakout year. She showed her versatility as an artist on her debut album earlier this year, dipping her toes into various styles and pulling it off without sacrificing the quality of the music. The Atlanta native has held her own and often outshined fellow rap heavyweights like Gucci Mane and 21 Savage on her own tracks, she’s not one to underestimate.

Rosalia

Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalia has had quite the year, from working with Travis Scott on multiple tracks whilst also more recently being placed on the official remix for the biggest song of the year ‘Blinding Lights’, there are no doubts she’s placed herself within the upper echelon of the music industry. Born in Barcelona Rosalia’s international appeal is unmatched, this year she even became the first artist to be nominated for a VMA who primarily records in Spanish. Artists like J Balvin (who she’s also collabed with) have managed to become global superstars with music that transcends language and it seems Rosalia is the next artist to become that internationally recognised.

Jack Harlow

Jack Harlow’s catchy and colourful flows have already managed to find a place for themselves on the charts as his massive viral hit ‘What’s Poppin’ seemed to be on everyone’s playlist this year. Jack’s confident and infectious personality seeps onto the bright and playful trap beats he laces his well-executed melodies and witty wordplay all over. Jack makes music that is the epitome of fun. However, he did manage to show a different side to his music during his XXL freshman freestyle where he tackled the subject of racial unjust with a level of maturity and thoughtfulness you wouldn’t usually expect from a rapper in his lane. While we’re sure he’ll carry on providing soundtracks to your parties, it’s great to know he also has a more conscious approach to music in his locker.

Mariah The Scientist

A fresh new voice from the endless talent pool of Atlanta who goes by the name Mariah The Scientist, is bringing brutally honest lyrics and a truly exceptional vocal range that is engineered to repeatedly pull at your heartstrings. Mariah provides a perspective that seems as if it’s been written from the women’s POV to the type of debauchery bragged about in The Weeknd’s songs. The view of a girlfriend who had to live with his ego and endless selfish decisions.

SAINt JHN

The story of SAINt JHN is quite incredible, his track ‘Roses’ which was released in 2018 and gained only minor commercial success was then remixed In late 2019 by Kazakh producer Imanbek and the song now astonishingly has over one billion views on Spotify, giving SAINt JHN one of the most listened to songs of the year. More recently he released his debut album stacked full of features from some of music’s biggest names such as Kanye West, Future and Lil Uzi Vert. While SAINt JHN may not be a household name at this current moment but he’s doing everything, he can to make sure he will be.

100 Gecs

If there’s one thing you can say about 100 Gecs, it’s that they refuse to allow themselves to be trapped in a creative box. Their influences range from punk and hip hop to alt-pop and ska. Their music is a complete mess and we mean that in the best way possible. Their range of alternative bangers are impressively hectic and incredibly creative and unique. When you first hear a Gecs song you may find yourself struggling to comprehend what you’re hearing but we promise it will grow on you, and once you start digging through their discography you won’t be able to stop. Even big industry names are starting to take notice and the duo have worked with pop star Charli XCX on the remix to their song ‘Ringtone’.
