It’s that time of the year again where our favourite annual shopping event is paying a visit- Black Friday. While being pencilled in our calendars for the 27th November, Black Friday like all things in 2020 are going to be a little different. For now, gone of the days where we witness (or participate) shoppers fighting over the last little black dress in a shop and instead we are now shopping from the comfort of our homes.

At VOIR we have curated some helpful tips and tricks to help you make the most of your virtual shopping experience this year.

1. Take a good hard look in your wardrobe and makeup bag:

Over the years, it’s easy for us to get lost in the piles of old clothes and draws full of 20 versions of the same colour lipstick. Although, before you set out to buy another pair of mid-wash jeans and add another lippie to the collection, have a good look at what you already have. If you lay your clothes out on the bed and line up your cosmetics on the side -you may find a hidden treasure you forgot you had.

2. Make a list:

This can be a mental list or a written down list, but once you have worked out what you already have, you can work out what you have room for. Due to the economic hit of Coronavirus, shoppers are more careful with their coin this year but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! More so now than ever, we can practise our conscious and sustainable shopping skills.

3. Look for brands which match your shopping values:

Many fantastic beauty and fashion brands will be extending their olive branch of discounts this Black Friday and with so many to choose from, look for brands that align with your ethos. Does a zero-waste vegan exfoliator tickle your fancy? Or perhaps an ethically made pair of boyfriend jeans? Whatever you look for in shopping, there is a brand out there for everyone.

4. Keep on the lookout:

Some brands start their Black Friday sales early, while many keep their cards close to their chest. It’s worth checking your favourite fashion and beauty brands socials and singing up for their newsletters now and then to get the early bird scoop on their discounts.

5. Buy pieces that will stand the test of time:

Tis’ the season for purchasing timeless essentials that can be worn and used throughout the years ahead. Think day to night dresses, lux loungewear and clean beauty collectibles.

It’s been 12 weeks since BoJo – aka Boris Johnson- essentially closed the UK. Shops were boarded up, restaurants closed their doors (yes Nando’s, we are looking at you) and late-night Netflix binge sessions became our only form of socialising. We’ve had a whirlwind of banana bread making, Tiktok watching and Chloe Ting sweatin’; however, the much-awaited time has finally arrived for things to start going back to normal.

From the 15th of June, the green light has been given for all non-essential shops to welcome their customers again. Hi Topshop, we’ve missed you. But what exactly does ‘non-essential’ mean and what will shopping look like from next week?

Well to start with, the non-essential stores include:

Food retailers

Chemists

Fashion shops

Tailors, dress fitters and fashion designers

Car dealerships

Photography studios

Mobile phone stores

Craft fairs

Food retailers

Chemists

Fashion shops

Tailors, dress fitters and fashion designers

Car dealerships

Photography studios

Mobile phone stores

Craft fairs

For the whole shebang, check out the full list here.

Whilst it’s good news for the high street that business can start up again, the government have set out a few ground rules, so you can happily spend your dosh while keeping yourself and others safe.

Now, what’s going to change?

Well, by now we have all become pro’s at social distancing, so don’t worry, things won’t be too different in that department. We all know that two metres is the magic number when it comes to keeping your space. But on top of that, employees will have staggered shifts, there will be a one-way system marked on the floor and many hand sanitizer stations throughout the store. Plus, additional parking. Get in!

And if you hadn’t guessed already, much like your weekly Tesco trips, only a limited number of people will be allowed in the store at one time. Which, when you think about it, is pretty damn ideal. It’s safe and means no one can crowd you to grab the last pair of shoes in your size. Best of both worlds, really.

Grace Mahary by Norman Wong for Flare August 2015

You may be thinking, what about clothing stores? I mean put your hand up if you love to mindlessly rub your hands up and down swede jackets and fluffy coats, without any intention of buying them. Because we do! Well, say goodbye to those days for now. You’ll be encouraged to touch as little products as possible *cry* and will need to try on clothes at home. Which means, it’s time for those at home catwalks again.

So, while post-pandemic shopping won’t all be the same for quite some time, you’ve got to think of the positives in every situation. 1. You can enjoy your shopping experience in safety, and 2. less people in the store = a shorter queuing time. We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for the shopping sprees to begin again. Just remember, bring your mask and gloves!

Fashion has always been circular, we have seen 90s trends coming back and forth across seasons. Needless to say, this ever-growing movement has taken a turn to high street retailers such as Urban Outfitters and have by far made streetwear significantly mainstream. This has quite frankly made fanatics shift from in-store to online with more attention to hunt for exclusive vintage attire by avoiding fashion clashes.
