Opening with a modern burlesque-dance number, immediately this fashion show is like no other. The iconic, Cindy Crawford opens the show in a slinky, blue evening slip to vocals from Jade Novah. The scene then transitions through the hotel lift with Bia entering to perform the Tiktok-favourite, ‘Whole Lotta Money’. Her neon lace set, with reflective knee-high boots, is paired with layered chains and a stunning makeup look of sparkling green eyeshadow. This is the first of many outfits, makeup and hair looks we will be taking inspiration from!

Owning the show, Normani later enters in a green, lacy bodysuit and twisted up-do. She continues to wow in her live performance, along with a cast of dancers in matching boxer shorts with green snakeskin – is this a hint to Rihanna possibly releasing menswear also?

The King of Latin Pop, Ricky Martin even makes an appearance, performing on the catwalk in loose, baggy shorts and a quilted robe. Celebrity guests like Emily Ratajkowski and Vanessa Hudgens are spotted in the audience catwalk, styled in matching lace sets and chunky, stone necklaces. Daddy Yankee also took to the stage, performing in a sparkling tracksuit, with dancers in subverted, black bodysuits and fishnets.

Victoria’s Secret Angel, Adriana Lima had a solo campaign moment in the glass, rounded lift wearing another black lace set from Savage x Fenty and knee-high black boots. Fellow model, Gigi Hadid completely changed her look by wearing a choppy, brown hairdo and baby bangs when walking the runway in a checkered, glitter robe. Surrounded by dancers, models like Symone and Troye Sivan, looked ethereal walking along the outside catwalk to Missy Elliott’s ‘Conceited’. Finally, Rihanna became the star of the show in a red room, wearing a snakeskin, latex red playsuit with black lace tights surrounded by incredible performers in matching red lace underwear. Closing the presentation, dancers gather along with Rihanna to applaud the fashion show as the sun begins to rise, atop the hotel’s roof – a powerful close to such a spectacular show.

Filmed in The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, the show’s location includes a spiraling walkway in the heart of the hotel, with numerous windows showing the city of LA and sultry, dim lighting within the rooms. Moving between pillars, through windows, and into elevators creates a constantly changing and exciting show, rather than display lingerie on a typical catwalk, Rihanna’s presentations make the garments come alive as part of a performance –  we are constantly looking to see who is wearing them, anticipating live performances, and looking out for Miss Rihanna herself.

The Savage x Fenty show has now become a staple of its very own fashion week. Due to its diverse casting, backed up with an exclusive size range, it is an empowering event not only for the models but the viewers also. The incredible dancers, artist performances, models, and celebrities feeling beautiful and confident extend beyond the screen to make us feel confident in our own skin.

Savage x Fenty is truly wearable by everyone and seeing people of all shapes look phenomenal in the garments proves, that with Rihanna’s support, we can all feel empowered when wearing lingerie.

Breaking Boundaries

When Vol. 1 was first broadcast on the 20th of September 2019, women across the world finally felt seen by the fashion industry. Rihanna defied the usual style of catwalk lingerie shows, and instead catered towards the female gaze. Lingeries were worn by an incredible cast of diverse models, representing different shapes and sizes, races, genders, sexualities, and disabilities. “Every woman deserves to feel sexy. We are sexy, we are multi-faceted and I want women to embrace that to the fullest”, said Rihanna

This attitude was carried into Vol 2, and the show was even more inclusive and representative of diversity.

Keeping Up Appearances

An element of the Savage X Fenty show we have come to love is the variety of celebrity and model appearances we see throughout. In Vol. 1 we saw the likes of Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Joan Smalls. A standout modeling performance was when Cara was choreographed along with dancers wearing a green lace set.

We also saw brand ambassador, Normani, take the center stage in an amazing dance performance.

In Vol 2 the runway cast grew, adding Willow Smith, Lizzo, Indya Moore, Shea Coulé, Gigi Goode and Jaida Essence Hall into the mix. We loved the choreographed moment between Indya Moore, Demi Moore, Bella Hadid and Normani, as we watched the stage ooze with diversity and representation, and the cast wore gorgeous sultry sets.

More Than Just A Runway

In both Vol 1 and 2, we have seen world-class performers take to the stage and offer entertainment. We loved Rosalía’s sassy ‘Relación remix’ and TKN’ performance, in which she performed choreography alongside a diverse team of dancers modeling the Savage X Fenty menswear collection.

Another stand-out was Bad Bunny’s ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ performance, a song dedicated to any woman who likes to dance alone at the club.

Exploring Sexuality and Gender

With Rihanna’s inclusivity coming naturally to her, it’s no surprise that we have seen defiant representation for the LGBTQIA+ community so far in her shows. Vol 2 saw a sensational cameo from Pose’s Indya Moore, who identifies as transgender and non-binary.

We also saw show-stopping struts from Drag Race icons Shea Couleé, Gigi Goode.

What we can expect from Vol 3 ?

We’ve been glued to Riri’s Instagram for the past few weeks, seeing what we can gauge from the snippets she has been posting. Yesterday, she shared a video highlighting the event, showing us the personalities involved, clips of fast-paced choreo, and striking looks. Performers will include Daddy Yankee, Nas, BIA, Ricky Martin and Normani. We will also see star-studded appearances throughout the show from Bella Poarch, Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid, Jeremy Pope, Gottmik, Symone, Troye Sivan, Vanessa Hudgens, and many more.

We also saw show-stopping struts from Drag Race icons Shea Couleé, Gigi Goode.

Rihanna has announced the ‘Savage x Fenty Show Vol. 3’, premiering on Prime, September 24th. The Instagram teaser shows Rihanna in a sparkling blue halter coverup and various matching lingerie pieces to her summer hit, ‘Wild Thoughts’. The glimmering fabrics, VHS filters, disco lights, and even a mullet, could perhaps suggest a 70s or 80s inspired show.

Savage x Fenty shows have elevated the typical fashion show by including live music performances and diverse casting – the shows are more reflective of the 1990s extravagant couture presentations by Galliano and Mcqueen, which incorporated dramatic performances and elaborate set designs. Previous shows have starred a various cast of celebrities, models and performers, such as Bella Hadid, Lizzo, Normani, Willow Smith, Paris Hilton, and Shea Coulée with live performances from acts like Bad Bunny, Roddy Ricch, and Rosalía. Recent additions to the Savage x Fenty collection have included spring floral designs, vibrant purples and oranges, and silky sleepwear in support of the Clara Lionel Foundation. The teaser video suggests blues, blacks, and golds may be prevalent at the show, offering darker and colder tones as we enter Autumn and Winter.

The anticipated fashion show cannot be predicted, but given the previous presentations, we can expect exciting performances, sultry lingerie and nightwear, plus Rihanna’s consistently diverse casting representing Savage x Fenty’s all-inclusive sizing ranges from 32A to 42H/46DDD for bras and XS–3X/S–XXXL for underwear and sleepwear.
