The first incredible talent we want to mention is Harley Weir. Harley Weir is a self-taught fine art graduate that has been involved with huge campaigns with Balenciaga, Celine and Stella Mcartney. Her work is youthful and intimate and subverts conventional perceptions of the feminine gaze. Weir has an eye for the human form; many of her pieces highlight certain bodily parts or characteristics. She’s had work featured in POP, AnOther Magazine, British Vogue, CR Fashion Book, Dazed and Confused, i-D and Arena Homme+ and continues to take the fashion world by storm.

Brianna Capozzi

Another incredible woman setting the tone for others in the industry is Brianna Capozzi. She is an incredibly talented a photographer based in New York and over the recent years she has become known for her unashamed risqué shots and high-profile subjects. She’s worked with Olivia Rodrigo, Selena Gomez, and actress and fashion queen Chloë Sevigny, which resulted in one of her most risqué shots to date, with the photograph controversially depicting a lobster crawling on a naked Sevigny’s crotch.

Julia Hetta

Another talent we are particularly obsessed with is Julia Hetta. Julia Hetta is a Swedish Photographer who graduated from Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveldt Academy in 2004. Since then, she’s worked with some of the most renowned named and publications within the fashion industry, To name a few, J. Lindenberg, Another Magazine, Dazed and Elle. She explores dark and gory, as well as sensual and romantic themes in her work.

Petra Collins

Petra Collins has become one of the biggest names in fashion photography over the last 10 years, shooting with some of the biggest names in Cinema and Fashion –  Alexa Demie, Bella Hadid and Kim Kardashian. Her photos have a feminine, dreamlike feel and largely cater to the female gaze.

The final incredible talent we want to celebrate is Cass Bird. Born in 1974, she’s an artist, photographer, and director from New York and has been published in Elle, Nylon, Rolling Stone, GQ, Paper and New York Magazine. She’s also done work with Levi’s, Urban outfitters, Wrangler and Keds.

But, not just any photographers – we’re here to celebrate the very best female camera magicians in the industry and their empowering, uplifting and boundary breaking work! These incredibly talented women have each portrayed how it feels to be a woman in their own unique ways, celebrating the highs, the lows, the intimacy, the vulnerability and the fun all in equal measure. Get ready, your Insta feed is about to be blessed with a massive amount of female power!

Annie Reid

There’s an immediate sense of intimacy and vulnerability in Annie Reid’s photography. Annie isn’t afraid to get up close and personal when photographing her models, and whether the photo is either a simple headshot or something more noticeably intimate, that same level of striking vulnerability and honesty shines through. Her style is also tinged with nostalgia, with grainy video and photo effects and sun-drenched visuals being prominent throughout her work.

Carlijn Jacobs

Carlijn Jacobs embraces the surreal in the absolute best way with her photography, with a wicked sense of humour and trippy, iridescent colour palettes oozing through her catalogue. The surrealism expertly blends both nostalgia and futurism whilst also portraying and celebrating female empowerment in a gloriously unique way. Extreme close ups of heavily glossed lips, women photoshopped onto giant heels and pregnant women painted entirely in gold are just a few examples of this surrealist dreamscape.

Emre Unal

Looking for a photographer who is laden with some serious punkish attitude? Then look no further than Emre Unal, who is able to blend this attitude with a healthy dose of intimacy for a really special effect. Emre has a very diverse range of styles across her portfolio, with classic black and white portraiture, surreal photoshop experiments and sensual portrayals of the body all sitting alongside each other in a really cohesive way. Having such a diverse range of styles could easily look inconsistent but Emre and her work avoid this expertly.

Charlotte Rutherford

With collaborations with Apple Music, Lil Nas X, Halsey and a host of other big names under her belt, Charlotte Rutherford has certainly made a name for herself within the industry. Her body of work is marked with an immediate sense of humour and some seriously trippy colour palettes that embrace themes such as religion, futurism, sex and even nods to video games like Sonic the Hedgehog. Charlotte is definitely one of the most unique photographers on the scene right now and shows just how far the boundaries can be pushed.

Vicky Grout

Vicky Grout’s photography embraces a more down-to-earth vibe that captures the day-to-day moments of life that might seem otherwise mundane, such as shopping at the corner shop, and highlights them in their honest glory. This style of Vicky’s photography has a distinctly British feel that exudes an unmistakable charm, attitude and rawness that has come to be so associated with British culture.

Christine Hahn

There’s an immediate level of grace and sophistication in Christine Hahn’s photography that conveys a strong amount of maturity. With a portfolio made up of strong portraiture, Christine is able to capture her models in a way that, whilst obviously sophisticated, still maintains a lighthearted whimsy. Amongst her fantastic portfolio sits the cover of Camila Cabello’s single ‘Don’t Go Yet’ which is drenched in warm nostalgia and, of course, makes Camila look like the queen she is. If you’re looking for a mature and elegant celebration of women, then Christine Hahn is definitely your photographer.

Anna Zina

Anna Zina manages to capture all the sides of being a woman in vulnerable and playful shoots, many of which harken back to classic styles of photography that were prominent throughout the 60s and 70s. Monochromatic shots strip away all colour and leave the models at their most bare and pensive, whereas other photos are fitted with nostalgic filters that make you feel as though you are reliving a moment that never actually happened. It’s a wonderful portfolio of work, and at the forefront are women at their most vulnerable and most powerful.

Olivia Richardson

Clean and straight to the point, Olivia Richardson’s style of photography is pristine and overflowing with playful personality. With the ability to both be bold and strip things back to basics, Olivia’s photos celebrate women at their most human and their most playful. Equal parts vintage and modern, the photos themselves pop with vibrant colours and retro inspired visuals from oversized sunglasses to lit cigarettes, all of which are done in a suitably playful manner.

Petra Collins

Petra Collins has a style that is reminiscent of how a fairytale would appear in reality, otherworldly yet unmistakably real at the same time. This combination blurs the lines between reality and fiction amazingly well whilst utilising grainy effects, satisfying colour palettes and light work tinged with nostalgia. Among Petra’s many accomplishments is directing the music video for Olivia Rodrigo’s smash hit ‘Good 4 U’ which combines all the hallmarks of her photography work beautifully.

JUCOPHOTO (Julia Johnson & Cody Cloud)

JUCOPHOTO is the collaborative photography project of Julia Johnson and Cody Cloud. One of the most immediately noticeable aspects of their work is their insane use of bright and bold colours, which they utilise in incredibly satisfying ways, with colour almost becoming as much of a focal point as the models. Speaking of models, the duo have collaborated with some huge names including but not limited to Kim Kardashian, Reese Witherspoon, Troye Sivan and Tyler the Creator, in addition to photographing promos for season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Photography, as an art form, has historically been used against women. Male photographers have typically presented their female subjects as sexualised, passive, and weak; a subject to be looked at from the heterosexual, male gaze. The feminist photographers of the 1970s contested how women should be perceived in images, establishing themes of provocation, self-objectification, and non-traditional representation. Women photographers today can represent the complexities of womanhood through an honest viewpoint, without relying on the voyeuristic tendencies of masculine photography. Their contemporary images allow the viewer to adopt an alternative view of reality: the creator’s point of view, who carefully curates the image into something which promotes the truth of people today.

Sandy Kim

Sandy Kim shares intimate portrayals of the people who surround her, whilst working in her home of California. Her photographs are of unfiltered events, even in her more editorial shoots, her subjects remain natural compared to the exaggeration often found in fashion photography. Her array of NSFW images do not shy away from honesty. Her subjects’ nudity is not forced or uncomfortable, but simply an aspect of their personality and freedom.

Ashley Armitage

Ashley Armitage breaks down societal standards to include all bodies in beauty and intimacy. Her photographs often have feminine qualities of gentleness and sweetness, embodied across all genders and body types she depicts. Creating images of women, without adopting a voyeuristic lens, Armitage instead uses a welcoming intimacy to present her subjects.

Ayesha Kazim

Ayesha Kazim is creating fresh portraits which embody the individuality of each of her subjects. Working between New York and Cape Town, Kazim’s portraits often blend nature and people to produce gorgeous sunlit subjects. Her subject is the star of her portraits, with their personality shining through Kazim’s photographs to freeze joyous moments in time.

Amber Asaly

Amber Asaly’s photography brings together the nostalgia of Y2K editorials with the Tiktok stars of today. Recently shooting Addison Rae and Charli D’Amelio, Asaly is recreating the beloved style of the 90s and early 2000s photography which plastered our favourite fashion magazines. Her shots embody a nostalgia of 2000s pop stars, and when paired with chic 90s styling, creates romantic images.

From cultural references to provoking intimacy, and showing pure honesty, these photographers embody the nuances of femininity. Women artists are rethinking what they choose to present to the public; using their power to establish the women’s point of view in a previously masculinised lens.

When it comes to beauty standards photography is one of the go-to arbiters, if not the main one. Photographers like Mario Testino capturing iconic personalities such as Kate Moss have contributed to what we define as beautiful, even if unrealistic at times, setting and shaping the features that we associate with perfection.

However, the idea of beauty is taking a rapid shift. Expanding on a daily basis with the discovery of new faces and the inclusion of new values. We are no longer overwhelmed by flawless bodies, smooth skin textures and edited smiles.

This change comes along with a new wave of photographers. An inclusive change that allows everyone to feel more represented in the content we consume.

Here are some of the photographers that succeeded in breaking the mould and that we should all be following to further support this change:

Rob Woodcox

Rob Woodcox’s photography is what you could call magic. His surrealistic perspective combines fascinating landscapes, human bodies and intricate composition. The Michigan raised photographer travels the world with the aim of capturing untold stories by presenting the concept of beauty as something that can be experienced on a daily basis and in any surrounding.

One of the recurrent elements that is highlighted in his work is nudity. As he explained in a recent interview with Vogue “it is the most vulnerable human expression” and therefore it is important to show its essence, representing every body type and glamorizing their individuality. His vision transforms natural beauty from something perceived as mundane to avant-garde.

Maxim Vakhovskiy

Maxim Vakhovskiy is a photographer focusing on portraiture and the revitalization of natural beauty. From personal projects to commercial ones his raw style compels anyone. The neutral colour palette, the muted background, and the simple models create strong and mesmerizing images. His vision tends to celebrate African culture by concentrating on women of African descent and the characteristics associated with their country of origin, many of them in their simplest form, often nude or in clothing that embraces their diversity.

Vakhovskiy refers to himself as a perpetual muse seeker, every single one of his muses is photographed with a sense of admiration. His attention to detail highlights the model’s beauty and demonstrates the possibility of being confident in your body shape, no matter the form, in a de-sexualized and authentic way.

Nikolas Ray

You may know Nikolas Ray as the photographer behind the label @chnge. His vibrant pictures represent a new manifestation of beauty. A manifestation that takes many forms and defies the idea that beauty simply relies on a face. His content is centered in immortalizing fleeting moments, in making his models feel comfortable beyond the image. This is evident by just taking a look at his Instagram feed, every single one of his images tells a story, whether it be of his grandparents and reminiscing childhood memories or portraits challenging hegemonic masculinity. He encourages a new approach and tries to validate everyone’s personal experience, even if at times controversial.

Sophie Kietzmann

What sets out Kietzmann’s work from many other creatives is her moral incentive; to fill in the gap of visual representation in our society. The New York-based photographer is known for her focus on diversity, she creates an inspirational space for social change while delivering visually pleasing imagery. Her minimal portraiture work brings to light personal characteristics that would often be hidden. Those details that could make one feel vulnerable are the ones captured and praised through her lens.

Jeyza Gary’s photoshoot is one of the many challenging stereotypical beauty, empowering both her modes and audience to embrace every aspect themselves. By accentuating unique features she manages to obliterate boundaries while raising awareness on social stigma.

Guen Fiore

Guen Fiore is a young Italian photographer, currently based in London, who has managed to not only portray but romanticize her subjects and their interpretation of beauty. With a rather cinematic approach, she creates a tale based on the personal narrative of her ‘protagonist’ and delves into their intimacy. Her portraits are mostly of young women in their daily lives, either in their most intimate moments or their most public ones but the beauty is captured in the details of their actions and delicate gestures. Fiore’s photographs evoke a wide range of feelings, from happiness to nostalgia and even melancholy at times but what remains constant is the absence of a veil and limits to their self-expression. Once again, models are comfortable with their own bodies and emotions and through these images, we can be inspired to do the same.

With Halloween in the air, who better than Nick Knight to inspire our inner darkness. Amidst his signature monochrome style, we are treated to over exposed images and intense sounds effects, taking us into the realm of frightening surrealism.

The following four films best illustrate his edgy, harrowing aesthetic. From collaborations with Gareth Pugh on his A/W17 and S/S18 collections, to a short with Tino Kamal to create a music video called “London King”, Knight demonstrates his mastery of mystery, putting the glamour into gloom.
