The heavy contour days are very much behind us as we move into the much more subdued version of ‘soft sculpting.’ For proof, when we look to the trendsetter Mario Dedivanovic (aka Makeup by Mario) he has changed his signature harsh contour vibe that shook the beauty world in the 2010s to a more light-handed approach.

“The contouring trend started to shift when people began to realize that social media make-up is not the same as everyday make-up,” explains Dedivanovic, “Today, now that everyone knows how to contour, and it’s become part of their everyday beauty routine, people are realizing that you can achieve a sculpted look with a lot less make-up.”

He has, on the back of this, released a new Soft Sculpt Collection. The tightly edited line includes five products – the Soft Sculpt Shaping Stick, the Soft Sculpt Bronzer, the Soft Pop Blush Stick, the Soft Pop Powder Blush and the Soft Flow Highlighter, not to mention the three double-sided brushes. Everything has a deeply affordable price point coming in at under £30 and there are a handful of shades available.

The beauty world is seasonal and transitioning into a more natural feel for the incoming summer. However, contouring isn’t going anywhere, it’s just evolving. Here are some pro tips on how to achieve the soft-focus application to let your naturally beautiful self shine.

  1. Shade not in the hollows of the cheeks, but slightly above to avoid the contour looking unnatural. Blend upwards to lift the skin and create warmth. 

2. Use a slightly darker shade of foundation to add depth to your face for a gentle effect. Think cheekbones, temples, forehead and jaw.

3. Pop a blush on to complete the look, not too low on the cheeks.
