It’s safe to say she truly did Hepburn justice.

Staying true to her signature look she wore a half-up version of her trademark ponytail, super smooth with a subtle middle parting. Her much-loved hairstylist Josh Liu created the beautiful updo, posting on Instagram that he ‘couldn’t be happier’ for the stunning bride.

Ariana’s glam was of course, immaculate. Makeup artist Ash K Holm created the matt masterpiece with brown winged eyeshadow, long lashes, a mauve-y lipstick and contour that could kill. Sadly, her glam team hasn’t disclosed which products they used for this minimal nuptial vibe.

To finish off the look, the ‘Positions’ singer wore pearl and diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz to match her engagement ring – which features one pearl next to an upside-down diamond, both of which carry huge significance in her life. Vogue reports that the story behind it is about “appreciating the lowest or the ‘upside down’ moments in her life and how they have contributed to where and who she is now.”

The ceremony was a small affair, with only 20 of their nearest and dearest attending. As predicted in her hit-song ‘Thank U, Next’ she walked down the aisle alongside her parents, Joan Grande and Ed Butera to awaiting husband-to-be Dalton Gomez standing under suspended flowers, wearing a pristine Tom Ford suit.

Being single during a pandemic can be tough, but coming out of a period of isolation and trying to find the “one” is even tougher, at least tougher than we’d expected. If dating wasn’t challenging enough it now seems like an impossible task… is the final destination really worth all of those awkward first (and sometimes virtual) dates? We may not have a clear answer to that, but we know someone that might.

Monique Kelley has built herself a career based on her experiences with dating, writing on all there’s to know about it since 2013 when she created her blog “Confessions of a Serial Dater in L.A.”. Her chronicles about the complex world of dating continue to this day with the release of Reality in Chaos, a book that tells the story of love through the friendship of Simone Monroe, Taylor Ross and Jackie McKinley. So who better to answer our never-ending questions about dating than a “serial dater”?

Have a read below at our Q&A session with Monique Kelley to find out all the advice she’s given us on love and relationships this side of lockdown.

How has it affected your personal life when it comes to the perception of love and relationships?

Writing the blog has helped me in being more self- aware of who I am in a relationship. I am unapologetic for my non-negotiables. When I first started the blog there was a fear that men wouldn’t want to date me once they discovered I wrote a dating blog, but my response soon became, “Don’t give me anything bad to write about.” And the blog had evolved through the years. What started off as an anonymous exposé of my own personal dating life has turned into a women’s empowerment movement. And I am so grateful for that.

Would you say that the relationship we have with dating has changed over the years if so, how?

Relationships have drastically changed through the years mostly because of social media and texting. As well as the culture of modern day society. Women are very aware of their power and their sexuality more so than ever before. They are unapologetic for their needs and their wants. But some also, settle for situationships and relationships that are one sided and not mutually beneficial so they can live the “lifestyle” they see on reality TV and forget their worth. There doesn’t seem to be an in between when it comes to young women dating. As far as Gen X women we are hyper aware of our needs and our wants and desires because we have learned from our mistakes that and some, there is a hard edge and a wall that is so thick and so high it is impossible for the right man to get around it or over it. So we need to be aware of where we are. But most importantly, we need to allow ourselves to be courted and let the man do the man. May sound old school…. But old school works for a reason in this case.

Social media has become a vital element in our lives, especially when it comes to Generation Z, do you believe that it has had a positive or negative impact on the dating scene? Can dating still function without the use of social media applications?

Social media has had a negative impact especially for Generation Z. There is a false reality and intimacy. There is the need to put on “shows” instead of living for the moment, especially when it comes to dating. Instead of getting to know people, Gen Z heads to an online profile to find out the inauthentic “you.” It definitely hasn’t helped.

The popularity of dating applications and the reliance on social media and online networks has arguably risen over the past year due to the pandemic and limitations on social interaction. Do you think online dating has been a good thing during the pandemic? What about now that we’re coming further out of isolation?

When the pandemic first hit; I strongly encouraged singles to go online because more people were on there than ever before! And some good singles who would normally never go online were on there because that was honestly the only way to meet people. However, for some people online dating just isn’t the right thing! They tried it and they do not like it, and that’s okay too. They shouldn’t force it. You have to remember your dating journey is customized. What works for one person doesn’t work for the next. You have to find what works for you.

With some facing breakups, having to deal with loneliness or even developing attachment issues, what advice would you give to people who have temporarily given up on dating? Is it a good idea to get back into the dating scene as things are starting to open up again? And if so, how should it be approached?

You just have to go for it! It’s not going to be easy. We are in what I call “Dating Purgatory” because the world we knew is no longer and the world we are in we haven’t figured out. So that translates into dating. You just have to get out there and make yourself figure it out. Change our routine, go to a different grocery store, take a different hiking trail. Tell friends to hook you up, use matchmaking services. Go where the men are- golf courses, cigar lounges, home improvement stores, etc. Take yourself out to lunch. Just get out the damn house and do it!!!!

According to the attachment theory by Bowly, there are four types of attachment that an individual can be defined by. These different types are developed in the upbringing of each individual and affect their character, behaviour and overall approach to relationships (platonic and non-platonic).

Would you say that the experience one has with dating (and love) is affected by the attachment type they are defined by and the experiences they’ve had in their upbringing? If so, do you believe that one can grow out of their attachment style and develop a new one?

Yes and yes. The first step is becoming aware of the challenges and unlearning them.  

And as a result of Covid, do you believe we have developed new patterns and dating styles that can be related to a completely new attachment style?

A lot of people got into serious relationships during Covid. Some worked because they were both ready and had worked through those issues prior and now find themselves in healthy loving relationships. Others went into relationships because they didn’t want to be alone. As the world slowly opens up. One person thought they were in a relationship where they were all in while the other is ready to hit the ground running and get back out into the dating world. One person is left hurt and confused and the other is being completely selfish and inconsiderate. That goes back to unresolved issues. Also, singles are going to be more out and about than ever before because we have been cooped up. So that opens a world of possibility.

Do you believe that dating has become some sort of trend of “task”? Do people date in look for love and long-lasting relationships or has it become a routine to avoid being alone and in search of temporary pleasure?

It’s a mixture of both depending on where a person is. And there’s no wrong way as long as you’re open and honest from the very beginning with what you are looking for and your expectations.

Finally, can dating even be considered as one phenomenon with characteristics that can be applied to everyone, or is too personal of an experience to be able to relate to or give advice for in a general manner? Even in times when we are all facing similar issues due to the pandemic, can it really be that similar of an experience for so many?

Always remember each individual has a customised dating journey. I can give all the advice in the world, but it doesn’t guarantee a happy ending. It doesn’t mean there won’t be heartache, hurt, pain, and disappointment. But at least you will not feel alone in the journey. At least you can get a little nudge to get back out there. At least you can know you aren’t the only one with the same insecurities, worries, anxieties and fear when it comes to dating. It’s about encouraging and empowering each other through it.

With over 100 packages and lots of happy customers, it’s clear that M.D.D’s director knows her stuff. We’ve asked her some questions to help you with your love life for those of you spending December in Tier 3 Isolation.

We understand that being isolated with your partner might be a topic you’re worrying about, and you wouldn’t be alone: this might be one of the toughest times for relationships, but also one of the most exciting- it’s not often you’ll have this much time to spend together.

Nia is here to help you survive such challenging times and to help see this time through.

What’s your most important piece of advice for couples isolating together for the first time?

“This will feel quite stressful for couples, the emotional stress due to the unpredictability of the future and also financial impact can make individuals irritable and needing their partner’s support more. Due to this the most important thing to do is be patient with each other and understand these are unprecedented circumstances, give your partner space when needed, work in separate rooms and give emotional support if your partner is feeling anxious or stressed about the future – giving assurance you will get through this strenuous period together.”

Establishment can be an important part of communication in relationships: being open and declarative about things we need, want or have can be vital to avoid unnecessary arguments and keep couples from clashing. What do you think needs to be established in the relationship?

“Couples living together need to establish the following:

1. Working hours when quiet time and private time is needed.

2. Establish how you will sustain food supplies i.e grocery stores or food delivery service.

3. Personal boundaries for each individual i.e house rules to avoid conflict.

4. Write up a chores list that can be divided between the two of you.

5. Organise an ‘at home date night’ once a week i.e Netflix, couples games, romantic candlelit dinners etc.”

Having one space to live and work in can make anyone feel confined and claustrophobic, let alone when there’s more than one person doing it in the same place. Sometimes physical distance and boundaries are the best way to establish a sense of independence and focus, having different spaces for different daily routines and having different spaces for individuals can provide the compartmentalisation that’s needed when you’re isolating. With these house rules, personal boundaries and establishments in mind, are there any physical boundaries that you think should be set for couples in terms of working and living and isolating in one shared space?

“Yes, this is very important if physical boundaries are not respected this can lead to terrible arguments and significant upset. The following rules are imperative:

– Do not talk to me during working hours if I am working from home unless I engage with you or you just want to tell me something briefly.

– Do allow me to have private time to myself sometimes, despite us living under the same roof.

– Please respect your partner’s living rules to avoid arguments over chores and keeping the living space tidy.

– Respect that you are two different individuals but your different living styles have to integrate together successfully to avoid disagreements.”

People might be afraid to confront their partner with these ideas of distance and independence, what’s the best way to ask for some alone time without offending your partner? “Let your partner know you need some space and once you are finished you will join them.”

And how do you suggest we find some independence beyond the physical boundaries you’ve suggested? “Do not be too codependent on your partner; codependency ruins relationships. It is important that even though you are living together you do your own thing and embark on your own daily tasks and chores without constantly disturbing your partner.”

Even with these boundaries and independence, we understand when you’re stuck in the house with someone for a long time, arguments are almost inevitable. What do you think is the best way to diffuse an argument, or prevent one when tensions are high?“To avoid arguments listen to each other and show cognitive empathy towards your partner enabling you to see things from your partner’s perspective as well as your own. In the case of diffusing an argument concede if you are wrong, then apologise and do not raise your voice when speaking to your partner also always be aware of your tone.”

In isolation, every day can feel the same as we get into a routine that doesn’t change and can’t change, and with repetition comes boredom, which is sometimes the cause of these high tensions. How do you suggest couples can keep spontaneity and romance while stuck at home?

“Agree to quality time, no phones, no zoom, just the two of you. Try to create romantic fluidity by having intimacy and romance sporadically throughout the lockdown period. Understanding each other’s languages helps a lot in this situation knowing what your partner wants and needs is imperative. Play couples games i.e. a date night box, staycation setup or create an environment ideal for a romantic staycation. It is important to remember during lockdown give each other adequate space so that it doesn’t kill the romance.”

Games and staycations can be a brilliant way to spark romance and stop this period from feeling like an unrelenting Groundhog day, but on top of the boredom and impatience surrounding this pandemic, there is a lot of anxiety about the virus and families and these unprecedented times as a whole. One of M.D.D’s many counselling services regards mental health in the context of relationships, and the company is a key advocate for mental health, supporting and promoting Prince Harry’s Heads Together initiative. How should we comfort our partners if they’re feeling worried and how should we ask for comfort if we’re anxious in these times?

“Anxiety during this period is understandable. The unpredictability of this period is overwhelming, to say the least. It is important to communicate your feelings with your partner and be patient and supportive. Finances and jobs are a sensitive area at this time, create an environment that lets your partner feel comfortable at this time. Let your partner know your worries and fears and how this may be affecting your present behaviour. It is important to recognise your partner may be under strain at present which may result in some negative behaviour or possibly mood swings – do not take this personally.”

Although we are all facing a lot of uncertainty right now and all the elements of our lives have been changed by this pandemic, there is optimism and positivity to take away from it all. What message should couples keep in mind during this unprecedented period?

“The pandemic has been a strenuous period for us all but adversity is inevitable in life. There will be ups and downs and with patience, good communication, teamwork and resilience couples can get through this together. True love is shown by its unwavering strength through the tough times.”

As Nia says so well: “True love is shown by its unwavering strength through the tough times.”

As a Superstar with driving ambition, as shown by her many well- deserved number one singles, fans have been stricken to see Britney in this position for so long.

Although fans have been fearing for the welfare of the star, Britney seeks to calm their concerns with her Instagram page that glows with positivity. Sharing videos of herself dancing to her favourite songs by Rihanna, Beyoncé, Otis Redding, and many more, we see a true talent sharing what she does best; performing. Sometimes filming herself without makeup or even brushed hair, we are refreshed to see her social media account which is incredibly relatable and genuine.

Britney not only hopes to achieve personal growth but seeks to inspire that contagious touch of optimism. Alongside a quote inspiring courage, the singer honestly states: “I get how some people might not like my posts or even understand them, but this is me being happy…this is me being authentic and as real as it gets!!!!! I want to inspire people to do the same and just be themselves without pleasing others…that’s the key to happiness!!!!”

We are so pleased to see Britney placing her mental wellbeing as a priority, as she shares a serene video of herself doing yoga on the beach. Again, Britney brings her attention to helping others with the caption “we as people are all filled with so much anxiety…taking a moment to breathe truly helps…just know we are all in this together!!!!” She also regularly shares pictures of beautiful flowers with heartfelt captions, inspiring us all to find love and meaning in life. We salute Britney for channeling such a positive outlook in her difficult circumstances.

The conservatorship may limit her personal independence, but it has not impeded her strength from within: the place that holds the true “key” to happiness. Strong, resilient, and most importantly true to herself, we can see why the movement has gained such support. According to metro, over 134,000 people have signed the accompanying online petition, highlighting just how much she is admired. Truly deserving we wish Britney best wishes and luck for the future.

It was also another normal day in isolation when a girl, tired of her days blending together while sitting on the couch, decided to go onto her roof and learn the choreography of the high school musical song, ‘We’re All In This Together’. It is then that Jeremy Cohen the NewYork-based photographer spots Tori Cignarella. Fascinated by her Jeremy decides to shoot his shot – writes his number on a piece of paper, attaches it to his drone and fly it towards her. “Text me,” the note said and so she did.The recent Corona outbreak has swept the world at a devastating speed forcing most countries into a nation-wide quarantine to prevent the spread of the virus and protect their residents. This quarantine has also left many of us craving human interaction more than ever before. So, when Jeremy Cohen sent out his drone to connect with the girl from across the street, what followed became a viral sensation of a traditional meet-cute.Later for their first date, Jeremy surprised Tori with a dinner date at the roof of her building. The only catch was that he was in the building across the street with a similar set up on his balcony and thanks to facetime they managed to have a successful date. For their second date, Jeremy decided on a face to face meeting hoping she wouldn’t pop his bubble. Tori was surprised to see Jeremy in a human-sized plastic hamster ball with flowers and the luxury gift of hand sanitiser. Adhering to the social distancing rules they managed to have another successful dateTheir whole love story was filmed and posted on the internet and as we all know if you don’t post it, did it really happen? When one sense is lost, our brains get re-wired and put to work heightening our other senses. So, perhaps the absence of a boyfriend in my life is making me more receptive to the constant, relentless reminders of my relationship (or lack of) status. Or perhaps it’s the fact that we have finally surfaced after being smothered by Instagram feeds littered with pictures of smug-looking couples on their ‘cute lil Xmas weekend away XOX’; the constant and inescapable reminders of ‘boyfriend season’. Only to be thrust straight back into yet another one of the annual celebrations geared towards couples that us singletons are missing one key element to join in on yet are forced to endure.

It’s all getting a bit tedious, isn’t it? You literally can’t run to the shop for some milk for your morning cuppa’ without being smacked in the face with a ‘Dine in two for £10 this Valentines’ sign. You can’t even sit on your own in the comfort of your own home and innocently flick through TV channels without being bombarded with ‘Couples Come Dine With Me’, Married at first sight, First Dates, and now Love Island is back- GIVE ME STRENGTH!

Imagine a parallel universe. Each year, after the months of couples just about surviving ‘single season’, on February 14th all the sad people who are in relationships sit at home in front of the notebook and sob into their Doritos and tub of Ben and Jerry’s cookie dough, after sinking a £4 bottle of Echo Falls (far too specific to be made up, I know!). Whilst restaurants and bars are buzzing with single people ‘cheers’-ing to being with themselves for…their whole lives.

In light of this worryingly appealing parallel universe, and after years of being forced to live as a single person in an undeniably couple-orientated world, I’ve decided we need a revolution. This year it’s time we put the ‘I’ in Valentine’s day. Instead of commiserating over what we don’t have in our lives, put the financial benefits of being single to good use. Use the money you have saved by not having to buy the obligatory Christmas, birthday and Valentine’s day presents this year (and every other year) and treat yourself. Go and buy a boujee bottle of bubbly, a good book, run yourself a bath, turn your phone off and soak yourself in self-love (and really expensive bubble bath). Nothing screams ‘I love myself’ more than a 24-karat face mask; this Valentine’s day, celebrate what you have achieved in your life. By yourself, you can do whatever the hell you want, you are unstoppable; celebrate yourself.

Why is the word ‘single’ such a misunderstood word? Let me set the scene. You’re at a party and you find yourself stuck in the kitchen talking to a friend of a friend of a friend’s colleague. The two fail-safe questions that are a go-to in a situation like this inevitably pop up;

“So, what do you do?”

And

“Are you with anyone at the minute?”

Now, I don’t like to generalise but if your reply to the latter is ‘Yeah, I’ve been seeing this guy for nine months now”, I would bet my life savings (which probably wouldn’t even be enough buy a coat in Zara, don’t get excited) that their response to this would NOT be:

“Oh no, why what happened?”

Respond with “Nah, I’m single” on the other hand, and instantly poor little lonely you gets bombarded with:

“Aw dear, why?”

Or

“Don’t worry, you’ll find someone”

As if this unfortunate single circumstance couldn’t possibly be by choice, and you have been forced against your will by a cruel twist of fate to live a life of solitude and die alone. It doesn’t even cross their mind that there is a possibility that you might, just might be choosing to remain single.

You grit your teeth under that plastic smile you’re forcing your face into and say:

“Oh no, nothing has happened, I’m just not interested in being with anyone at the minute”

To which their reply is to stare at you blankly, so you justify your single-ness with:

“I’m just happy working on myself at the minute” (Whilst thinking to yourself, ‘lol, can you even work on perfection?!’)

As the fake justifications come pouring out, a memory trickles into your head of you prancing round your room in your undies to (in my humble opinion) one of the pussycat Doll’s greatest works of art; I don’t need a man. Trying to mimic the hip movements Ms Scherzinger does in the music video with the same vigour, but less sex appeal. Whilst belting out at the top of your lungs,

“I don’t need a man to make it happen I get off being free I don’t need a man to make me feel good I get off doing my thing I don’t need a ring around my finger To make me feel complete So, let me break it down I can get off when you ain’t around, OHHHHH”

This friend of a friend of a friend’s colleague has clearly never felt empowerment like this; so, you can only pity them and their ignorance.

Recently, however, this type of subtle single shaming is happening less and less. A change in the wind has made the S word that people were branded with should they choose not to spend their life partnered with someone as less of a temporary state of failure and more of a label to wear with pride.

We’ve got Lizzo putting ‘the s-i-i-ing in single’ while she ‘aint worried bout a ri-i-ing- on her finger and Emma Watson inventing the term ‘Self-partnered’ for people who are single and happy to be so, making being single the new in thing. So now, us people who have been loving ourselves, shaking our junk and singing to I don’t need a man and meaning it since 2006, can call ourselves the pioneers of this ‘single pride’ movement.

What being single does mean is that you can do what you want, when you want. You get to dictate every single aspect of your life, which is something that changes as you naturally want to please your partner. It’s not a bad thing, it just happens. Gradually, people are starting to realise that being single isn’t this dark pit of boring loneliness that people can’t wait to get out of. You haven’t failed in life if you haven’t made someone fall madly in love with you by the time your 25. Your life still has meaning if you haven’t moved in with someone and aren’t thinking about kids by the time you’re thirty.

Remember; who’s the one person in this world who knows you inside out and who has only your best intentions at heart. YOU.

Being happily single is the new trend, follow it.

To spread the love, a percentage of proceeds from the collection will benefit the United Nations Free & Equal, the U.N.’s official campaign against the criminalization of LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

With the global reach H&M have and the current political climate, it is vital that bigger brands make an effort to show support and put the joy back into fashion. The brand will be collaborating with Out magazine on a special campaign, titled “Pride OUT Loud,” to kick off the collection’s launch. It features LGBTQ+ figures like Olympian Gus Kenworthy, singer Kim Petras, and artist-activist Gabrielle Richardson.

“H&M believes in everybody’s right to love who they want,” H&M’s head of menswear design, Andreas Lowenstam, said in a statement. “We hope people can use H&M’s Pride collection to celebrate their belief in equal love.”

And the collection does exactly that with brightly coloured tees, sequined shorts, and slogan sweatshirts, all priced under $50 to be inclusive for all. Promotion for the collection will be found on the H&M and Out web sites where a series of videos that Out has produced will speak to each influencers’ experience as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

H&M debuted the collection at an event in Brooklyn on Tuesday night where guests walked under a rainbow arch into a room lit up in a pastel rainbow spectrum. There were Pride themed drinks and food and a performance by Aja.

The celebration collection drops on May 31st online and in select stores.
