]]> Model and actress, Kaia Gerber has launched a capsule collection of wardrobe staples with Zara and we are living for it. Kaia took to Instagram to announce the release that she developed hand-in-hand with Zara.

“My starting point for this collaboration with Zara was to ask if it is possible to do a collection that has everything you would ever need in your closet,” Gerber explained of her inspiration for the designs. “If you were travelling and packed an entire collection, could it cover every possible need that you had? I think we’ve achieved that.”

Kaia first took her initial obtrude upon the fashion industry in 2018, releasing a collection co-created with the iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The collaboration represents a completely new breakthrough in Zara’s strategy of elevating its brand positioning. More recently the brand released a new jewellery collection with Elie Top and also teamed up with American designer Narciso Rodriguez for a collection of garments.

The young model was entrusted with designing a collection of “new classics” by the Spanish brand. She paid homage to her home country, the American west coast.  The collection sees beautiful wardrobe staples that reminisce the style of the 90s. The collection includes more than 30 timeless pieces in neutral colours, including slinky slip dresses, chunky knits, and sleek tailoring—all of which are classic designs that have been modernized. The muted tones (grey, white, black, and navy) that take centre stage are heavily influenced by the 1990s. However, there are also hints of Americana in the form of denim and cowboy boots.

Poplin shirts that can be matched with denim jeans and the collection also bodes well for the autumn, featuring woollen and leather coats that can go over one of the recycled polyester sweatshirts. Shoes and necklaces, bracelets, and earrings are also available in this collection. The campaign was shot and photographed in black and white by Fabien Baron, Zara’s frequent creative collaborator.

Kaia Gerber says that she was inspired to create this collection by her mother, Cindy Crawford, a supermodel from the 1990s. She also thought about her friends’ styles and what has inspired her own over the years.

“I wasn’t just thinking about myself when designing. I was thinking about my mom, my friends and everyone I see around me. My style is pulled from a lot of different places and I didn’t want to design something that excludes anyone.”

From the beginning of lockdown, model Kaia Gerber, took to Instagram to create her online book club. Initially, Gerber explained her favourite books and suggested current reads, this has now developed into interviews with authors and wider discussions between her followers. Here are a few of her recommended books and authors which are ideal for a hot girl summer:

To begin 2021, Gerber recommended Joan Didion’s Let Me Tell You What I Mean. She also indicated her love for the author when sitting down with fellow model, Emily Ratajkowski, to discuss Didion’s Play It As It Lays. The pair discuss the experience of the protagonist, Maria, who is recovering from a mental breakdown in a Los Angles’ psychiatric clinic. The novel reflects upon Maria’s life before the hospital, her family life, and the encounters she has. Joan Didion’s realism is as equally interesting as her fiction. As a component of New Journalism, her writing often mimics narrative forms and explores the subjectivity of the writer. Slouching Towards Bethlehem is an example of Didion’s journalistic writing as she explores the American experience of the 1960s, through a collection of essays.

Early in the book club, Gerber recommended Normal People by Sally Rooney. The novel was an immediate bestseller and was adapted into a hit series, starring Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Set in Ireland, the story follows Connell and Marianne from high school to post-graduate years of university. Navigating relationships and avoiding difficult or uncomfortable conversations is a theme between her characters who lack communication. Coming in September is Rooney’s third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You. Following similar themes of love, relationships, power, and sex, the story unfolds via multiple narrative forms, from prose to emails. Beautiful World, Where Are You is set to be one of the most anticipated novels of Autumn.

Crying in H Mart is a recent recommendation for Kaia’s book club. During an Instagram live (available on her IGTV), she dived into themes of grief and mother-daughter relationships, along with the author, Michelle Zauner. The book is a memoir by the singer/guitarist of Japanese Breakfast, in which she explores her human experience. Family, food, grief, and endurance are encompassed as Zauner reflects on her life growing up as the only Asian-American in her school, to her move to the East Coast, and later coping with her mother’s passing.

Kaia Gerber recommends a vast range of authors and various books, from poets and journalists to memoirs, plays, and classic prose. The variety of suggestions ensures at least one of will lands with you. Whilst a good book is perfect to accompany you on a beach holiday, as we move into Autumn, there is also the option to be cosy from the comfort of your own home as you curl up with a book on a rainy day and transport through the pages.

Consistently appearing in effortlessly cool looks on the streets of Milan and New York, we’ve compiled a list of some of Kaia’s top off-duty outfits that you’ll want to re-create this Spring.

Botanical Co-Ord 

Kaia’s much-loved beanie and thin sunglasses were key in transforming this bold outfit into a casual streetwear look. A floral print jacket and trouser co-ord were paired with a black cropped turtleneck and golden chain bag for this look. The Doc Martens followed suit with Kaia’s chilled beanie.

Layered 

Leaving a hotel, Kaia showed us how white trainers can blend in seamlessly with any look. Layered up in a black turtleneck, a black pinstripe blazer, and a black leather jacket, Kaia added sheer black tights and white sneakers perfectly offset the white in the pinstriped blazer. A simple black silver chain shoulder bag and a chunky silver wristwatch polished off the look.

Military Gold

Kaia’s tailored military green outfit was another perfect off-duty outfit. In a matching green mini skirt and military-style jacket, belted at the waist, Kaia paired black patent knee-high boots with oversized shades. Kaia’s bag and jacket effortlessly matched with their subtle golden embellishments.

Pinstripe Dressdown 

For Paris Fashion Week, Kaia attended the Isabel Marant show in an effortlessly chic ensemble. In a pair of grey pinstripe trousers, a Versace tee, white trainers, and a black Supreme beanie. Kaia’s black jacket with leather panels adds a sense of chic to the cool look.

No After Party 

Kaia’s combo of tights and trainers made a reappearance during New York Fashion Week. In a cropped black hoodie, black leather shorts, and a puffy black jacket, Kaia added a statement pair of Alexander Wang tights emblazoned with ‘No After Party’. A pair of red and white Nikes added a pop of colour to the streetwear.

Combat-To-Black

Leaving the MaxMara show in Paris Fashion Week, Kaia coolly donned a perfect street style look. A cropped white tee was the perfect simplistic element to compliment a black puffer jacket and some black leather combat trousers. A black belt bag, sunglasses, and pair of high-top trainers kept a modish element to the look.

Suited Up

On the streets of NYC, Kaia strode in a refined urban look. A black boilersuit with white accents was layered over a black hoodie and paired with Doc Martens. A strong black liner pulled the look together.

Supreme Vinyl 

Kaia’s Docs made another return on the streets of New York. In a black graphic tee and blue high-rise jeans, Kaia’s Docs and Supreme beanie maintained her much-loved street style along with a puffy vinyl coat and a black belt bag thrown over her shoulder. A pair of cat-eye glasses retained a chic sense to the look.

Rose Tinted Glasses

Double denim was no longer a no-go after seeing Kaia’s street look. With a pair of frayed blue jeans, black heeled boots, and a belted leather jacket, Kaia paired her denim jeans with a small denim clutch bag slung over her shoulder. A pair of thin rose-tinted glasses complimented the large golden hoops which accessorised the look.

In another effortlessly cool ensemble, Kaia scooted around the streets of Paris. With a green checked blazer, cigarette black trousers, and high-top converse, Kaia accessorised with a cross body Alexander McQueen bag in a matching green shade and large black sunglasses.

NY Casual

On the streets of NYC, Kaia expertly dressed down a business blazer. In a pair of wide-legged ripped black jeans, Kaia paired the navy pinstripe blazer with a white crop top and sneakers. A simple black golden chained bag was slung across the body, and Kaia kept her blazer sleeves rolled up to maintain that effortlessly casual look.

Tie-Dye has made its way back into fashion by force. Its transparent entrance into SS20 has not only hit retailers, but many independent labels are seen to grasp at the psychedelic trend.

Needless to say, tie-dye is always pushing boundaries and has done for many periods in fashion, but more so shifting its audience to a less a psychedelic target and to a more on-trend audience as of the production of loungewear.

The fashion industry has not only adapted to this pandemic, but it has opened a gateway for creativity that has made tie-dye one of the ‘most wanted’ attire. This season tie-dye is grounded on pastel and lighter shades of colour as it shifts from its original scheme of bold shades.

It goes without notice that luxury brands have grasped at the idea of tie-dye before and have incorporated the style in their collections; such as Stella McCartney and Prada. With fast fashion at its peak, it can be seen that online and in-store retailers are quick to jump on the trend especially Missguided, Pretty Little Thing and Asos, with different styles and fits of tie-dye for a much lower price.

The tie-dye effect has been seen to make its way on to the social media spectrum as it being the central hub for celebrities and the place to find new styles. With the majority being on Instagram, the unique pattern seeks to spiral its way into people’s shopping baskets without hesitation, it is meant to be in this season with that sort of effect on people!

The Kardashian and Jenner clan have also been spotted significant of times strutting in tie-dye. Kylie Jenner’s baby girl Stormi is also seen to embed the concept of tie-dye in her ‘Stormi World’ merchandise catering to her baby couture. Artists such as Travis Scott has also interpreted the tie-dye model in his album merchandise for ‘Astroworld’.It can be perceived that tie-dye is a symbol of authenticity, whereby each item of clothing will never be the same, so you don’t have to worry about fashion clashes. This psychedelic print is easy to achieve as the name suggests all you need to do is grab your favourite t-shirt tie it up and dye it. The Fashion Awards is consistently ranked as one of the most seminal nights for fashion lovers – and last night’s ceremony lived up to expectations. Hosted in London’s Royal Albert Hall, the event brought together an extremely stylish and iconic guest-list including the likes of Julia Roberts, Giorgio Armani, Donatella Versace, Rihanna and Naomi Campbell (though that’s to name just a few).

Rihanna stole the show with her all-green ensemble – which, as expected, was all from her own clothing line, FENTY. Her halterneck ‘Light Matcha’ satin bustier dress was elegantly paired with matching gloves and a Gerogette sheer coat embellished with diamonds draping gently on her back. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that FENTY picked up an award for ‘Best Urban Luxe Brand’ last night presented to her by Tyler the Creator and Janet Jackson.

“Thank you for believing in me as a young black woman and my talent,” she said, accepting the award. “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to prove what I love to do”.

Naomi Campbell was also a prize winner last night for ‘Fashion Icon Award’ and hence became the first woman of colour to ever receive the accolade. She thanked her mother primarily, stating, “whatever success I have is a testament to you”. The sheer embellished Alexander McQueen gown worn last night was just one of the many looks she has effortlessly pulled off over the course of her 3-decade-long career.

Adut Akech took the title of ‘Model of the Year’ and in her acceptance speech, the South Sudanese-Australian model stated “This award is bigger than me; it’s bigger than a title in the industry. It’s for every young girl or boy refugees around the world in a tough position who are unheard or unseen”. Her emerald green Valentino dress worn last night featuring a thigh-high split and statement bow looked like it was picked directly from the Fashion Houses’ latest Haute Couture collection showcased in Beijing this November which featured big bows and bare shoulders.

Other favourites from the night include Kaia Gerber in a monochrome Loewe ensemble. A black bralette paired with a lace white skirt, taken from the SS20 collection channelled a fresh Gen-Z aesthetic.

Host, Tracee Ellis Ross also wore Loewe, in particular a white handkerchief dress from Jonathan Anderson’s spring/summer 2020 collection. The layered white piece featured a geometric mismatch hemline paired with a chunky white necklace.

Nicole Scherzinger (frontrunner of the recently reformed girl-group ‘The Pussycat Dolls’) made a stellar appearance with her all black and heavily embellished Julien Macdonald dress.

Supermodel Neelam Kaur Gill wore a Balmain geometric patterned bodice and feather skirt. Victoria Secret model Leomie Anderson wore an elegant Armani gown laced with an array of colourful gems (pictured together).

Supermodel Winnie Harlow, who was a nominee for Model of the Year, stunned in Vivienne Westwood with a pink ruffled dress which protruded on either side and featured heavy ruching.

An overwhelming divide between two camps swept the Autumn/Winter 19 runways earlier this year, with many of the collections that graced the catwalks falling firmly into one of two sartorial categories: minimalism and maximalism.

For the minimalists, Tory Burch and Céline unveiled a plethora of back-to-basic bourgeois essentials, Alexander Wang featured understated supple leather, while neutral hues dominated at Victoria Beckham and The Row. At the other end of the spectrum, volume, drama, rich colours and embellishment – in other words, a maximalist’s dream – reigned supreme, with no shortage of seasonal sparkle. High on glamour, the holiday season is as good an excuse as any to load up on sparkle. With the season’s mantra that ‘more is more’, nothing is too extra when it comes to the party pieces to get you noticed. Imitate the high-shine styles found on the AW19 catwalks, with options abound for glittering looks that’ll slide effortlessly into your party season wardrobe. Seek blinding seasonal sparkle at Michael Kors, where matching feather boas offered the perfect accoutrement to plunging purple halter-necks and royal azure cut-out glitter dresses. Make a festive statement in a black and silver sequin mini dress with a giant outlandish bow, as donned by Kaia Gerber on the Saint Laurent runway. Or, if you’re looking for something a little less OTT, pair a silk shirt with high-waisted sequin trousers that’ll work hard to uplift a winter soirée, as seen at Paco Rabanne, or an all-over glitter blouse with ombre flares and chunky silver heels as demonstrated by Halpern. A little black dress is a fail-safe number for the office Christmas do – add a layer of edge and swathe yourself in sequins with a glittering black blazer dress inspired by Saint Laurent.

Catch the light in disco metallics, which held sway at Altuzurra in the form of a golden pleated tier dress. At Gucci, shimmering leopard print midi skirts were paired with lace blouses and emerald green mermaid pleats took form in a balloon-sleeve blouse worn with opulent lace red tights. Speaking of which, tights are the accessory du jour. From fishnets to polka dots and diamantée embellishment, a pair of tights adds the perfect finishing touch to a luxurious party look.

Have a penchant for roaring 20s Gatsby glam? A jewel-encrusted mini dress serves as the perfect +1 to accompany you to an upcoming Christmas party – add diamond tassel earrings for an extra dose of glamour as seen as Paco Rabanne, or black studded accessories at Balmain for a flapper-meets-90s grunge look. Take inspiration from Michael Kors and go tonal with a copper fringe dress, matching heels and a (faux) fur coat for that extra layer of warmth – the perfect pick-me-up for dark winter nights. Black-tie occasion? Plunge into luxurious plumage inspired by Marc Jacobs’ decadent ball gowns. Feather trimmings were equally plentiful, with feather-lined shoes worn with sparkling hot pants and a fur shawl at Saint Laurent, and a feather-hemmed black blazer dress unveiled at Balmain. Cue the return of the cardigan. Last month, an image of Katie Holmes stepping out onto the streets of New York City, raising her arm to hail a taxi, in a pair of perfectly worn-in jeans and an oatmeal-coloured cashmere cardigan, the latter of which had fallen just far enough down her shoulder to reveal a matching knit bra, went viral. Internet searches for the $1,540 cardigan and $520 bralette soared, the unaccessible price-tag leaving us with a cardigan-sized hole to fill in our wardrobes.

With the revival of 70s-style dressing, the cardigan’s preppy yet nostalgic feel and ageless character means it effortlessly slides into the current fashion landscape as one of the most covetable items of the moment. Sported by fashion A-listers among the likes of Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, the celebrity cardigan phenomenon illustrates flawlessly the power of the button-down knit as an effortless, inconspicuous yet undeniably stylish wardrobe staple.

At once laid-back and indulgently chic, French girl Jeanne Damas’ collection of quintessential Parisian-inspired cardigans in fresh sorbet and warm neutral colour palettes seems to be constantly sold out, with every woman in pursuit of the Parisienne aesthetic on its waitlist. Among the sellout pieces of the highly anticipated Leandra Medine’s collaboration with Mango was a grandma-chic-style floral embroidered cardigan. Perhaps the secret to the cardigan’s comeback is its pulling power as a cross-seasonal essential, the combination of a cardigan, worn buttoned up with nothing underneath, effortlessly paired with a pair of denim, is a transitional dressing phenomenon – aesthetically pleasing and cosy in equal measures.

It may have been the Katie Holmes ‘bradigan’ moment that got us all talking about the sartorial sex-appeal of a matching bra and knit combo, but appearances of the humble cardigan on the runways the past two seasons were equally plentiful.

Its appeal lies in its ability to send a thousand sartorial messages, to work in a thousand different contexts, all while retaining its ultimate comfort power and timeless endurability. A basic, dependable wardrobe mainstay, a timeless staple that never ages or tires.

Basic, however, doesn’t mean boring – and the eclectic knitwear on the AW19 catwalks proved that cardigans are only as boring as you make them. At Christopher Kane, an oversized red cardigan worn as a dress with a plunging neckline comprised an entire look, while the runway at Miu Miu featured a matching camouflage cardigan and shorts combination. Celine took the cardigan back to basics, with the traditional French-style knit layered over preppy shirts with foulards in looks offering the perfect source of autumn-winter office inspiration. Molly Goddard’s upsized argyle knit offered a take on grandad-inspired style, inspired by a jazzy 70s nostalgia. Alexander Wang unveiled a tweed mint green cardigan with silver hardware buttons, injected with a dose of grunge audacity layered over biker-black leather. The myriad of iterations of the cardigan that featured on the runways doubtlessly offers evidence enough of its versatility as a staple with the power to go from office attire, to grandma chic, to subtly-sexy.
