]]> February has been an absolutely stellar month for music with tracks from Janelle Monáe, Lana, and Caroline Polachek keeping our spirits high through the cold weather. We’ve compiled a playlist of our fave tracks that dropped this month. Be sure to add your mix to start Spring off right.

Caroline Polachek – ‘Pretty Impossible’

The current it girl of alt-pop Caroline Polachek brought us the soundtrack to the latter half of February with her album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. Fusing electronica with garage and a touch of house, she’s created a downtempo masterpiece that is an early candidate for album of the year. ‘Pretty Impossible’ is the song Caroline said she was most proud of in an interview with Crack magazine. Inspired by the string section on Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, it’s a dreamy trip-hop track full of lush violins and scatty beats. And that spoken word section is to die for.

Paramore – ‘Running Out of Time’

Paramore made their much-welcomed comeback after a 5-year hiatus this February with This Is Why. Anxious and introspective, the album deals with a myriad of global issues such as war and the pandemic and explodes with nervous energy providing a cathartic experience for the listener. ‘Running Out of Time’ is one of the best tracks from the album. Singer Hayley Williams wittily jests at her poor time management in this light-hearted melodic track that proves that the post-punk revival isn’t dead. Feel the tension slip away as you dance to those stabbing guitar riffs.

Janelle Monáe – ‘Float’

You’ll ‘Float’ to Janelle Monáe’s triumphant new track that’s “light as a feather”. The single is the first new release from the singer from 2021 and features Fela Kuti’s youngest son, Seun Kuti, as well as his band, Egypt 80. Janelle showcases her rapping skills on dub influenced track featuring a rich brass section and groovy guitar riffs. We’re hoping that this chill uplifting song could be pointing to a new era for the R&B singer and that more new music might follow!

Lizzo & SZA – ‘Special’

The dream team-up of course is in our playlist. This month Lizzo and SZA dropped a remix of  ‘Special’ featuring SZA providing stunning backing vocals to the fantastic tune. Motivating, uplifting, and comforting – it’s the ideal song for turning a rainy day to sunny.

PinkPantheress & Ice Spice – ‘Boy’s a Liar pt. 2’

PinkPantheress’ TikTok hit ‘Boy’s a Liar’ got a revamp this month when the singer collabed with our favourite new rapper Ice Spice this month. The suitably titled ‘Boy’s a Liar pt. 2’ brings us everything we loved about the original plus an outrageously catchy verse from the orange-haired baddie. We dare you not to sing along.

Lana Del Rey – ‘A&W’

‘A&W’ is the most exciting piece of work Lana has released in some time. The seven-minute-long song, which was released on Valentine’s Day in the Americana queen’s typical romantic style, is broken into two parts and manages to refer to personas Lana embodied throughout her impressively varied career. It starts with a piano-driven melancholic melody before plunging the listener into an electronic R&B beat with distorted vocals reminiscent of tracks from Ultraviolence. We can’t wait for when Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd hits streaming next month.

Jessie Ware – ‘Pearls’

The ever-classy Jessie Ware gave us a taste of hazy luxury this month with her latest single ‘Pearls’. Bringing us a funky nu-disco moment, ‘Pearls’ is full of the singer’s usual uplifting energy packed with lively keys, great backing vocals, and whispery addressals.If ‘Pearls’ is anything to go by we know we’ll love Jessie’s fifth album That! Feels Good! dropping on the 28th April.

Kelela – ‘Enough for Love’

Warm and full of longing, the R&B track ‘Enough for Love’ is the fifth and final single from Kelela’s album Raven, which dropped earlier this month. Kelela’s second LP is another early contender for album of the year. The angelic-voiced singer expertly shapes a hypnotic nocturnal soundscape that’s desire-filled, mediative, and utterly rich – its sound and energy is unmatched. 

Maisie Peters – ‘Body Better’

Maisie Peters voices her anxiety over body issues in ‘Body Better’ which every woman can, unfortunately, relate to. Although the lyrics touch on a sensitive spot for many the track is a refreshing sway-inducing pop tune. Featuring frills, cake, and um… blood, the music video for the track sees pop’s newest sweet-faced princess getting her hands dirty whilst on a picnic with her friends. It’s sugar-sweet with a dark twist and we’re here for it.

Princess Nokia – ‘Closure’

Princess Nokia gets angsty on their newest single ‘Closure’ switching their signature pop rap style for noisy alt-electronica. With boisterous drums and raw riffs, Nokia channels her sadness and anger over a failed relationship into a catchy breakup anthem that will heal the heartbroken. 

Yunè Pinku – ‘Night Light’

A twilight set electronic maze of twinkling sounds, Yunè Pinku’s progressive house track ‘Night Light’ sparkles as an endlessly replayable unique dance track. The London-based artist never fails to produce interesting, dreamy tunes that have us dancing the night away in a trance.

Nia Archives – ‘Conveniency’

Jungle heads will love Nia Archives’ liquid D’n’B and neo-soul fusion. As expected from the fun-loving DJ, singer, songwriter, and producer ‘Conveniency’ brings all the good vibes for pre or post-club antics. With scatty beats and gorgeous layered harmonies, it’s a sunny track that will put a smile on your face. The track is a single from Nia’s forthcoming EP Sunrise Bang Ur Head Against Tha Wall set to come out next month – keep an eye out for more playlist-worthy tunes.

Yaya Bey – ‘Exodus the North Star’

Vulnerable neo-soul will always have a place in our hearts and playlists. Brooklynite Yaya Bey’s ‘Exodus the North Star’ fuses neo-soul and reggae to create something special that we can’t stop playing. Yaya’s unique vocals pack a punch starting soft and then crescendoing into a powerful performance as she begs her lover to take her to paradise. It’s an ultra-romantic track that we’re goo-goo for.

]]> Every Fashion Week the streets of New York are transformed into its very own catwalk. The most inspirational fashion looks are not limited to those in the shows, with some of the best coming from the attendees and afterparties. With this in mind, here are some streetstyle moments from NYFW that you do not want to miss.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski attended the off-schedule Marc Jacobs show in an archival look from the designer’s 2014 Autumn/Winter collection. The monochromatic brown look played with texture from the sheer V-neck top to the jacket’s fur collar. She paired the look with a dramatic bob-haircut with a full-fringe that elevated the already chic look even further.

Julia Fox

Julia Fox is quickly becoming everyone’s favourite for streetstyle looks. Whether she’s doing her weekly shop in her underwear and knee-high denim boots or using duct tape as a top, Julia Fox always provides a daring look, no matter the occasion. And if those are the outfits that Julia wears when running errands then you can only imagine what she pulls out of the bag for Fashion Week. Fox attended the Seks NYFW party in a full leather look from the brand. The black belted micro-mini was paired with an orange crop-top and leather jacket with elaborate feather trim. The look was topped off with a grey hair look with provided a cool contrast to the orange details in the outfit.

Ice Spice

Ice Spice made her New York Fashion Week front row debut at the Dion Lee show this week and she definitely earned her place. Wearing a full lace look with Dion Lee’s signature cut-outs, this was the first of her many ‘best dressed’-worthy moments. She paired the modern outfit with a sleek old Hollywood glamour inspired hairdo, a styling decision that perfectly blended two aesthetic binaries.

Camila Mendes

This New York Fashion Week Camila Mendes took the ‘no-pants’ trend to the catwalk. Styled by Molly Dickson (@mollyddickson) Cami attended the Coach show in an oversized leather jacket with black high-waisted underwear and a bralette underneath. The look was accessorised with a pair of studded loafers and a bag. The decision to accessorise the look so simply served to emphasise the lack of outfit, creating an effortless yet intentional feel to the look. All in all, Cami Mendes really proved that less actually is more.

Aweng Chuol

Aweng Chuol attended the RTA x FWRD dinner in a blue Jacquemus dress with an abundance of cut-outs. The slinky knotted dress was paired perfectly with some chunky gold jewellery and sleek black accessories. At times throughout the night Aweng paired the look with a brown fur duster coat that exuded elegance.

Amelia Gray Hamlin

Amelia Gray Hamlin also attended the RTA X FWRD dinner, she however opted for a much more gothic look for the appearance. She paired her black maxi dress with sheer tights and barely-there heels. In fact, the only non-black element of her look was the large silver cross around her neck.

Julia Fox (again)

This would not be a NYFW Streetstyle article without at least two Julia Fox looks in the conversation, and so here she is again. This time Julia was sitting front row at the Dion Lee show, a fashion pairing made in heaven. Julia’s grey hair was the perfect accessory to her edgy look for the fashion brand. Her heavily zipped leather skirt was paired with a matching jacket that starkly contrasted her hyper-feminine feathered heels. However, what stole the show was her explicit graphic tee that read “Starf*cker”, just when we thought she couldn’t get any more iconic.

Ice Spice and Lil Nas X

The duo that we never knew we needed; Lil Nas X and Ice Spice sat front row at the Coach AW23 show and all eyes were on them. Lil Nas wore a Valentine’s inspired ensemble pairing a vibrant red shearling jacket with a pink turtleneck, distressed jeans, red boots and a bag to match. Ice Spice, however, went down the preppy route wearing a varsity inspired A-line dress that contrasted her extravagant diamond chain.

Leonie Hanne

Leonie Hanne brought all of the drama to the Prabal Gurung show this NYFW. If the show stopping strapless SS23 fuchsia and black Guipure Lace mini dress wasn’t enough, Hanne matched the look with a dramatic pink scarf that wrapped over her hair and then flowed freely behind her. The look was topped off with sheer coloured tights, tulle heels and a simple black bag.

Charli XCX

Charli XCX performed at the Saks NYFW Party in an enviable double-denim look from Ludovic de Saint Sernin. She paired the monogrammed lace-up dress with a matching denim racer jacket and knee-high combat boots. She accessorised with a black crescent bag and some futuristic sunglasses to make the perfect ‘New York party girl’ look.

]]> Ice Spice is here to change the rap game – and she’s not waiting for her peers to catch up. On the 20th January, the rapper dropped her much-awaited debut EP, which was announced only hours before its release, and it’s far from disappointing. Sharp, sexy, fun, and fresh – Like… is bringing a feminine revamp to drill that the genre needed.

Those who have yet to hear of Isis Gaston, the 23-year-old rapper from NYC, will soon see her name popping up everywhere. She was featured on Vevo’s Artists to Watch in 2023 list and has already built a huge fanbase with 3M followers on Instagram and 2.7M on TikTok. She’s been likened to our fav rappers Saweetie and GloRilla by critics and has gained fans in the Weeknd who shared the track ‘Gangsta Boo’ on his story this week and Drake who played her single ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ in his Sirius XM radio station. She first gained attention when a video of her doing the “Buss It” challenge went viral on Twitter back in 2021 and she’s been climbing the rap ranks ever since bringing her unique flare with her.

Like… encapsulates the gen Z sound to its core. The songs are short and snappy with looped high-pitched instrumentals, popping drill bass, and an unwavering nonchalance in Ice’s vocals – it’s no surprise that she has gained fans in the chronically online youth as her tracks sound deeply TikTok-inspired. The songs even begin with a short skit (“Grrah/Stop playin’ with ’em, RIOT/Grrah”) that mimics the rapid buzz of noise like that of scrolling through TikTok. At 13 minutes long Like… may be brief but those beats are memorable.

Despite her modern sound Ice Spice’s influences include time-honoured artists Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Foxy Brown, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill demonstrating she is well-versed in the world of R&B and rap.

The singles on the EP are the snappy playful ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’, the Spongebob-esque ‘Bikini Bottom’, and the hip-mover ‘In Ha Mood’, all released in the last half of 2022. ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ was unsurprisingly a winner with the internet going viral on Twitter and TikTok as well as charting on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts.

A standout on the EP is fellow Bronx rapper Lil Tay’s collaboration with Ice on ‘Gangsta Boo’. His high-pitched fast-paced flow contrasts Ice Spice’s relaxed flow and deep vocals well. Ice Spice’s long-time collaborator RiotUSA, who produced the EP, sampled P. Diddy’s ‘I Need a Girl Part 2’ for the track creating an absolute earworm of a melody.

Ice Spice makes it clear she doesn’t care whether you like her or not with her ultra-cool relaxed attitude, which ironically is the reason we love her. Her lyrics express an aloofness as to what the haters think with her witty responses indicating she doesn’t take herself too seriously. In ‘Ha Mood’ she claps back at the haters who are jealous of her success, “Oh, she mad ’cause I’m takin’ her spot/If I was bitches, I’d hate me a lot”. She also hits back at internet trolls in ‘Bikini Bottom’ telling them, “I got two milli’ for usin’ a mic, bitch/Think about that when you type”. Ice compares herself with the much-loved Princess of Wales in ‘Princess Diana’ after a fan dubbed her “the modern-day Princess Diana” in a now-viral tweet suggesting she realises her own charm. In ‘Gangsta Boo’ Ice gets spicy singing “You got a gangsta vibe/ And I want a gangsta boo” in a chorus that won’t leave your head for days. Ice has her own lexis pool that we just want to dive into. She introduces us to the newest (and cutest) term for being a hoe in ‘Actin A Smoochie’ and that you just can’t help smiling at. Likewise, ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ brings the ladies the NYC-originating diss “munch” aimed at men that get a bit too cocky.

So far, two of the tracks from the Like… have music videos both of which display Ice Spice’s unique tongue-in-cheek spirit. ‘Bikini Bottom’ features Ice Spice partying with hotties and rapping with a wry smile in the corner of her mouth in front of a garish green screen as money flows down on her. It’s a bombardment on the eyes as the video jaggedly cuts from shot to shot – and we can’t look away. The video for ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ has a similar vibe with cartoon butterflies and graphics of the lyrics flying across the screen whilst Ice Spice chills with her friends on a basketball court making us wish we were bad enough to dance with the newly crowned princess of drill.

With her signature orange afro, glossy lips, and on-point style that mixes y2k-inspired belts and chains with skin-tight bright dresses and co-ords Ice Spice’s look is seamless. Her Instagram is full of a variety of looks that whilst different all convey Ice’s cohesive style. We’ve pieced together some pieces that will help you replicate Ice Spice’s baddie look.

Retro fire red Jordan 4s, light blue skinny jeans, and a cropped silver puffer make up the staples of this throwback fit reminiscent of some of Missy Elliott’s looks in the noughties. Add a chunky chain, half a dozen rings, and starred white XL square nails to complete the look.

This colourful curve-hugging two-piece made from braided fabrics is super flattering on Ice Spice. She accessories the outfit perfectly with ripped white tights, a silver Balenciaga shoulder bag, white fluffy Demonia boots, her classic chunky silver chain, a bejewelled heart ring, and long black nails.

Ice glows in her chat with Genius about ‘Bikini Bottom’. She wears a black fluffy cardigan with a black bra peaking out, cute white moon leggings from Marine Serre, with a heart chain. Her tie dye patterned yellow, green, and orange nails are super cute too.

The green stilettos and yellow nails match perfectly with this orange, green, blue, and yellow striped skin-hugging maxi dress. And of course Ice’s orange mane is the perfect icing on top of the cake.

Ice gives Instagram the finger in a distressed red catsuit looking exceptionally snatched. She styles with a black Prada shoulder bag and black tabis. We love how she mixes chic accessories with a more racy look to bring together the fit.
