Selena Gomez arrived at the Oscars in a custom Ralph Lauren gown dripping in 16,000 hand-sewn glass droplets and Rosemont crystals. The off the shoulder silhouette was airbrushed to create a soft ombré pink effect, giving the dress a dreamlike quality. A true Marilyn Monroe moment modernised for today’s red carpet.

Mindy Kaling 

In Oscar de la Renta 

Mindy Kaling brought botanical elegance in a sheer Oscar de la Renta FW25 gown adorned with intricate metallic leaf embellishments. The halter style dress struck the perfect balance between ethereal and modern, with its delicate detailing catching the light at every turn. Styled by Erin Walsh, Kaling kept her accessories minimal, opting for dazzling diamond stud earrings by Effy that let the gown take centre stage.

Doja Cat 

In Custom Balmain & Swarovski 

Never one to shy away from a bold statement, Doja Cat arrived in a Balmain leopard-print gown inspired by a vintage 1953 Pierre Balmain design. The strapless gown, which took 5,600 hours of hand embroidery by 46 artisans, featured a deep sweetheart neckline and mermaid-style train, proving that couture craftsmanship is alive and well.

But her sartorial moments didn’t end there, later in the night, she took the stage in a dazzling custom Swarovski dress, dripping in over one million crystals as she belted out Diamonds Are Forever in a spectacular James Bond tribute. 

Raye 

In Vivienne Westwood & Versace 

Making her Oscars debut, Raye stunned in a fiery red, floor length Vivienne Westwood gown, perfectly complementing the rich tones of the carpet. The dress featured a dramatic cowl neckline, corseted bodice, and elegant draping, evoking an effortless Marilyn Monroe style glamour. A diamond ruby teardrop necklace and a bold red lip completed the look, proving that classic Hollywood beauty will always have a place on the red carpet.

Later, for her Skyfall performance, Raye switched into a custom Versace tuxedo-inspired gown, exuding sultry sophistication as she captivated the audience with her breathtaking performance.

 Lisa made her first Oscars debut in a custom Mark Gong tuxedo gown, reinterpreting menswear with a dramatic, feminine edge. The look featured sharp tailoring, a red flower pin, and sparkling rings softened the sharpness of the look, making it a seamless balance of power and elegance. 

When she hit the stage for Live and Let Die, she transformed into a vision of elegance in a black embellished gown with red detailing, proving her status as both a fashion and performance powerhouse.

Kim Kardashian made a sticking statement at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar After Party in a custom Balenciaga ball gown that exuded both simplicity and modern sophistication. Kylie Jenner embraced duality at the 2025 Oscars, first dazzling in a custom Miu Miu gown adorned with crystals and daring cut-outs, before slipping into a corseted black lace Ashi Studio dress for the Vanity Fair after-party. Keke Palmer, one for the dramatics made a jaw dropping entrance in an archival Versace gown that balanced vintage and sheer daring. Styled by Molly Dickson, the ethereal ivory dress featured a flowing layered skirt and a backless bandeau top, while a sheer bodice revealed her striking rib cage tattoo. Adding a touch of glitz, the gown was accented with a shimmering netted high-neck overlay, giving the illusion of delicate, glittering armor. Embracing her own red-carpet moment, Palmer flaunted the gown’s high slit with a confident Angelina Jolie-style pose, showcasing metallic Jimmy Choo heels. The 1939 representation of the character was made infamous while wearing a monochromatic green face. This look is easy to obtain with a green base, and with so many advances in makeup and techniques, you can really elevate this look to the next level. Contouring, highlighting, and beating your face will give this look and entirely new dimension and allow you to have some room to personalise the look.

Although Storm isn’t necessarily linked directly with Halloween, the X-Men diva is a cinematic icon to women and gay guys—everywhere. It also gives a good second life to any pre-loved Catwoman costumes one might have lying around. Storm’s look is all about her ice-white hair, her piercing cheekbones and her frosted lightning bolts stemming from her eyes. Achieving these ice-coloured forks of lightening is super easy using NYX Profession Eyeshadow Base in White, and a fine makeup brush for precision when sketching the thread-like forks. Lip colour is optional—as Storm has had multiple looks throughout the years—but red or black seem to be the most commonly worn colours. The Hocus Pocus trio is a perfect choice for some Halloween inspiration. Whether you’re going solo or with your two best pals, the Sanderson Sisters are undoubtedly a staple of Halloween. With a red-head, a blonde and a brunette, you’re almost guaranteed to be able to go wig-free for these looks. The Sisters are easily recognised by their trademark hairstyles and multi-coloured cloaks. Earlier this summer it was revealed that the new 007 agent will be portayed by British actor Lashana Lynch. She won’t be replacing James Bond, rather assuming his 007 status as the former agent enters retirement. While it was a shock to many, the casting has caused strong postive reactions, and was a welcomed change, mostly from women and people of colour who are now getting more representation in the franchise. And this recent change in Bond’s representation of women is due to particular behind-the-scenes changes. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the genuis behind Killing Eve and Fleabag, will become the second ever woman credited with contributions to a Bond script, and was drafted in by Daniel Craig himself.

As we approach a new era of feminist Bond girls, let us remind you of some of the earlier icons of Ian Fleming’s world:

Barbara Bach

The sexy, scary, and completely badass Bond girl from The Spy Who Loved Me co-starred with Roger Moore as the KGB spy, Anya Amasova. Bach is an outspoken feminist who called Bond “a chauvinist pig who uses girls to shield him against bullets,” and she certainly embodied the female go-getter energy the franchise needed at the time. She later married The Beatles legend Ringo Starr, which only makes us love her even more.

Halle Berry

Another icon that can’t go unmentioned is the legendary Halle Berry, who starred as the NSA agent Jinx in Die Another Day alongside Pierce Brosnan. Berry became the first woman of colour to win the Academy Award for Best Actress and was congratulated by the USA’s National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for “giving us hope and making us proud.” Halle Berry has taken the sheer sex appeal of Jinx with her into later films like Kingsman: The Golden Circle and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, but she’s also kept her standards high and has shown that she won’t settle for anything less than a strong-willed female character.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle has recently reentered the spotlight after appearing in the hit film Crazy Rich Asians last year, but many know her as the Chinese agent, Wai Lin, from Tomorrow Never Dies with Pierce Brosnan. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Royal Academy of Dance, which may explain why she did all her own combatting scenes and even ended up with a nomination for an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight. She oozes grace and decorum, similarly to the way Bond himself does – a comparison drawn by many as she matches both sex appeal and wit of the title character.

There are still plenty left to talk about, so here are a couple more honourable mentions:

Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger who ran an all-women crime ring; Louis Chiles as scientist Dr Holly Goodhead in Moonraker; and Carey Lowell as the pilot Pam Bouvier who was physically stronger than the men she fought. For the aforementioned wonderful actors and characters, and to all the rest, we are so grateful to have reached a place where we can see a black woman as 007, taking on the world of Bond and all its cat-stroking villains. The franchise still has a long way to go, but getting Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Lashana Lynch on board are huge steps forward, and we couldn’t be more excited.
