Girlies grab your lipstick and make sure your accessories match your shoes because Barbie is coming to cinema this Summer! Starring the blonde bombshell we all know and love Margot Robbie as Barbie and the dashing Ryan Gosling as Ken, who could be perfect to play this iconic duo? This romantic comedy is directed by the fantastic Greta Gerwig who brought us Lady Bird and Little Women and is written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach director and writer of Marriage Story and a frequent collaborator of Wes Anderson. The supporting cast is also jam-packed with A-listers such as comedian Will Ferrell, Marvel actor Simu Liu, SNL favourite Kate McKinnon, Hate U Give star Issa Rae, the loveable Michael Cera, new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa, as well as his Sex Education co-star Emma Macke.

It will be the first-ever live-action Barbie film and is bound to induce nostalgia in the queens that grew up watching classic Barbie films like The Princess and the Pauper, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and Island Princess. So far all we know about the plot is that after being expelled from Barbieland for being a less-than-perfect-looking doll, Barbie sets off for the human world to find true happiness. 

Vogue has already cited Barbiecore – skimpy looks in bright pink – a trend for the summer so we know this movie is just bound to have a huge cultural impact. With the UK release date being set as 21^st July we can’t wait to see this campy delight on the big screen. 

Babylon

Margot Robbie stars in another film we’re anticipating with pleasure, the period comedy-drama Babylon. Set in the late 1920s during the time when Hollywood transitioned from silent movies to ‘talkies’ the film follows multiple filmmakers and stars as they try to keep afloat in the changing world. Brad Pitt, Narcos actor Diego Calva, Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea, the OG Spiderman Tobey Mcguire, and Olivia Wilde also all play a part in this wild ride of a film. Academy award nominated director Damien Chazelle, known for Whiplash and La La Land, directed the film which has already received five Golden Globe nominations including Best Motion Picture in the musical or comedy section and nine nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards. This crazy party comes on 6^th January – make sure you’re there!

Scream VI

Lock your doors and don’t answer the phone because Ghostface is back and this time he’s moving through the big city! On the 10^th March the new instalment of the Scream franchise is being released exciting news for horror fans all over the world. The 6^th film of the quintessential slasher film will take place in New York City and be a direct sequel to the 2022 Scream film that rebooted the franchise. Whilst everyone’s favourite final girl Neve Campell will not be returning the film will star actors from the previous film Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and of course Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega as well as Courtney Cox who starred in the original films. What makes this instalment unique is that it takes place outside of Woodsboro in New York City. Grab your popcorn and for God’s sake watch your back!

The Little Mermaid

Disney has been turning our favourite childhood movies into live-action films for the last few years now delighting fans with the fresh retelling of classic stories. A lot of girls who grew up wanting desperately to breathe underwater will be delighted to hear that The Little Mermaid is the next Disney movie to be given a live-action movie and will be released on 26^th May. The new musical film, directed by Rob Marshall, who directed the film version of Chicago, will star American singer-songwriter and Grown-ish actress as Ariel. The perfect casting of Melissa McCarthy as Ursula and Javier Bardem as King Triton has us super excited to see how this film pans out and with Lin-Manuel Miranda doing the music we’re getting out our whosits and whatis ready as our microphones to singalong.

M3gan

If the uncanny valley freaks you out, you may want to skip M3gan coming out on Friday the 13^th of this month – or maybe just peek through your fingers! The science fiction horror film comes from the dark and twisted mind of James Wan responsibly for the Saw, Conjuring, and Insidious franchises. The horror film stars Get Outactress Alison Williams alongside child star Violet McGraw who you may recognise as the young Nell from the Haunting of Hill House. The plot revolves around Gemma who works as a roboticist using AI to develop a lifelike doll, M3gan, a kid’s best friend and a parent’s greatest ally. When she unexpectedly gains custody of her niece, she gifts her a prototype of M3gan to keep her company which leads to disastrous consequences.

The Whale

The Whale is the new A24 film that critics are marvelling at. The film has earned Brendan Fraser a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor, and fans are saying he deserves an Oscar for his tear-jerking performance. The American Canadian actor known for his role in the Mummy trilogy has made his comeback after a long absence from Hollywood due to his struggle with depression. Directed by the great Darren Aronofsky, who brought us Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, Mother! Starring Jennifer Lawrence, and Requiem for a Dream starring Jared Leto, this film is bound to be a masterpiece. The psychological drama is about 600-pound English teacher Charlie (Fraser) who attempts to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter (Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink) after his lover, for whom he abandoned his family, dies. Even the trailer makes us well up, so you better bring a whole box of tissues to the cinema when it comes out on 6^th February.

Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes

If like us, you can’t get enough of the dystopian world of Panem and are itching for a new Hunger Games film we have thrilling news for you. The fifth instalment in the Hunger Games film series The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be a prequel to the films already released. The film is based on the novel by the same name by Suzanne Collins, released in 2020, that is set 64 years before the first instalment and follows the callous president Snow in his younger days when he was a poor orphan. The film will star Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer, and Peter Dinklage with Tom Blyth as President Snow. The film is set to release on the 17^th November so you have lots of time to rewatch the other films before then!

Wonka

Timothée Chalamet stans prepare yourselves because the young actor is donning the iconic top hat and picking up his cane ready to take on the titular role in the much anticipated Wonka. Chalamet will be the 3^rdactor to take on the role of the eccentric chocolatier after Gene Wilder played him in 1971 and then Johnny Depp gave him his own spin in 2005. There’s no trailer yet but what we do know is that this fantasy musical will be a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the 1964 novel by children’s author Roald Dahl, following the adventures of the chocolatier before he owned his infamous factory. Alongside Timothée will star comedian Keegan-Michael Key, Mr Bean himself Rowan Atkinson, Spencer actress Sally Hawkins, British icon Olivia Coleman, and Little Britain’s Matt Lucas. The film is directed by Paul King the British director who famously wrote and directed the nation’s favourite Paddington and Paddington 2! With photos from the set showing Timothée draped in a velvety red coat giving magical vibes, we can’t wait to see this remarkable film when it comes out on 15^th December.

Now that Halloween is over, the festivities are starting to creep onto shelves and signs of Christmas are showing on our screens. We understand it seems wrong to start getting excited just yet, even though the 24-hour Christmas film channel has been up for a few months, so instead of a list of brilliant Christmas films, we’ve compiled a list of ‘semi-Christmas’ films – films that feel festive without actually being overly ‘Christmas-ey’, that way you don’t have to feel ashamed about jumping the gun.

Gremlins

Gremlins is another good watch between Halloween and Christmas, as it’s really about mischievous little monsters and not about Christmas at all. The overall imagery of the film is undoubtedly Christmassy – lots of snow, Santa hats – and the Mogwai is given as a Christmas gift, but other than that, the film is something for all year round.

Edward Scissorhands

Another great Tim Burton film, Edward Scissorhands has a holiday feel as half of it is set at Christmas.
