Over the last 10 years there’s been a huge increase in demand when it comes to androgynous design, challenging traditional gender norms and stereotypes that have previously encaged people within fashion. People no longer want to be put in a box, and with an increased demand for more inclusive and diverse clothing options, more and more designers are tailoring their work to this niche, and designing interesting and unique clothing pieces that can be worn by individuals of any gender.

This movement towards genderless fashion is an incredible time for the fashion industry and allows for endless self-expression. There are some specific designers that are absolutely knocking it out the park and creating androgynous artworks, and we are desperate to share them with you.

Willy Chavarria

One of the first designers that comes to mind when we think about gender fluidity in fashion is the incredibly talented Willy Chavarria. Chavarria is currently senior vice president of design at Calvin Klein and chief creative officer at his own brand. He’s become known for intertwining current issues in politics as well as race and sexuality into his design.

In a fast-paced world, our deepest yearning is for “me time,” a sanctuary where personal well-being reigns supreme. Pew Research’s insights emphasise this universal desire, yet the challenge lies in making it a priority. “Me time” is a sacred home of personal indulgence, where individuals reclaim their moments, anywhere, anytime.

In the words of Emily Ketchen, VP and CMO of Lenovo’s Intelligent Devices Group and International Markets, “Tech and fashion, both boundlessly dynamic, adapt to the ever changing thudding pulse of society. The Lenovo Tab Wear Collection is a masterpiece that integrates technology into multifaceted outerwear, engineered for your ‘me time.’

This collection transcends boundaries, as each designer infuses their distinctive artistry and creativity into unique outerwear masterpieces. The ingenious duo, RANRA, hailing from London and Reykjavík, crafts a noise-cancelling anorak with a packable tablet harness for unrivalled focus. Kit Wan Studios, the herald of Hong Kong’s independent menswear, forges a modular techno-armour exo-skeleton, seamlessly fusing technology with streetwear. Amsterdam-based Maium conjures a jacket that metamorphoses into an inflatable hammock, the ideal companion for outdoor adventurers.

They’re not merely garments with Lenovo tablets; they are the embodiment of a reimagined world.”

Infused with their interpretation of “me time,” each designer smoothly weaves eco-conscious elements into their designs. RANRA’s waterproof marvel pays homage to the environment, incorporating recycled textiles and trims. Kit Wan Studios champions local trade, forging partnerships with small-batch collaborators in Hong Kong. Maium’s creation, a feat of eco-engineering, boasts recycled polyester with a bionic eco-layer, painstakingly crafted by GRS and Oeko Tex-1004 certified manufacturers. The result? An experimental collection that redefines entertainment and mobility, elegantly infused with mindfulness.

PROFESSOR JIMMY CHOO ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF AN INNOVATIVE NEW FASHION
ACADEMY IN THE HEART OF LONDON AIMED AT DELIVERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF
FASHION DESIGN TALENT

January 20th, 2021: Luxury footwear pioneer Professor Jimmy Choo OBE, today announces
the launch of a dynamic new higher education fashion academy in the heart of London, which
is on track to become the UK’s newest university exclusively dedicated to fashion.
Opening its doors this September, the JCA | London Fashion Academy, has been established
through a shared ambition of Professor Choo and the founding team, to nurture the fashion
talent of tomorrow and build on a sector which in the UK generates over £100 billion
annually.*

Situated in London’s Mayfair, the Academy is set to develop the next wave of global fashion designers. Delivering a fresh and transformative take on fashion higher education, the
Academy’s courses combine the latest teachings in contemporary design with the
entrepreneurial skills required to set-up and drive successful fashion brands of the future.
Revolutionising higher education, the JCA introduces a ground-breaking incubation model
where students will be nurtured as emerging professional designers through a mentored
approach and will be provided with a level of access to internationally recognised design
leaders unrivalled by traditional colleges and universities.

“The Academy has been years in planning, so we are delighted to be opening its doors this
September,” said Professor Jimmy Choo. “London is a global fashion hub and has created
many of the world’s most exciting and ground-breaking designers. Rarely though do these
designers leave higher education armed with the combined knowledge, skills and resources
needed to create, launch and build brands successfully on the global stage. The Academy will
help bridge those gaps and truly nurture internationally-focused and highly entrepreneurial
design talent.”

The Academy will

help bridge those gaps and truly nurture internationally-focused and highly entrepreneurial

design talent.”

Housed in a Grade I period property, its campus is situated a stone’s throw from Savile Row,
the cradle of tailoring-led global craftsmanship, the Academy building has been meticulously
repurposed to provide its students with a boutique environment and one of the most
advanced seats of fashion design learning in London.

The JCA | London Fashion Academy has curated a syllabus inspired by Professor Jimmy Choo’s
experiences in building his own luxury super-brand as well as the multi-faceted skill sets which
fashion designers increasingly need in today’s ultra-competitive multi-channel global
landscape.

From the starting-line of their academic lives with the Academy, students will have a couture styled experience and be encouraged to establish themselves creatively and commercially as
design-led business people. Key to this educational approach is a commitment to commercial
incubation, carefully curating a dynamic creative hub that provides students with a ready
made fashion community that works to support and provide vital networks around their
business needs.

“Fundamental to the DNA of the Academy is the focused interest in supporting aspiring designers to transition between higher education and entrepreneurship”, states Stephen Smith, CEO and founder of the JCA | London Fashion Academy. “At the Academy we will professionally incubate our students as emerging designers through a mentored approach, supporting them through our extensive network of global fashion contacts. This means our students will begin their professional lives from the moment they enter the Academy, developing their craft by establishing their own brand label, working in professional studios and through exhibiting, showcasing and trading in a luxury Mayfair location.”

The JCA’s Mayfair building will also play a pivotal role in re-galvanising London’s fashion community post-pandemic and has been established as Mayfair’s international hub for all those interested in design and luxury brands. Taking inspiration from and disrupting the boundaries from the likes of the V&A, Royal College of Art, Parsons New York and Somerset House, the facility will be more than just an educational academy, providing contemporary co-working spaces for fashion start-ups, gallery and exhibition space and a calendar of networking and fashion-focused events.

Supported by the government from an early planning stage, the JCA | London Fashion Academy underwent rigorous assessment by the Office for Students and its Quality Assurance
Agency and was officially designated in Autumn 2020. “It is brilliant to see new exciting and innovative institutions expanding the boundaries of higher education as a result of Government reforms,” states Universities Minister Michelle Donelan. “It is vital that students gain the practical skills and hands-on experience that employers and industries need and the JCA’s revolutionary approach can help students hit the ground running into a successful career.”

The JCA | London Fashion Academy, along with its validating partner, The University of West
London, will provide four carefully selected courses for its opening year:

. Foundation Diploma in Fashion
. BA (Hons) Fashion: Design, Branding and Entrepreneurship
. BA (Hons) Fashion: Design & Accessories
. MA Fashion Entrepreneurship in Design & Brand Innovation

Students and emerging designers can discover more information about the JCA and apply for
courses from today via the website, www.JCA.ac.uk. The academy will also offer bursaries to
a select number of students.

Take a look back to your childhood, I’ll guarantee a piece of clothing stands out. The one piece perhaps that showed you how much fun fashion can be, and set off a life long love affair with it. Mine was a Petit Bateau raincoat, and despite different sizes and colours throughout my life, none has given me the same satisfaction of wearing the first one. It’s my fashionable nostalgia.

Almost every designer and artist takes inspiration from their childhood at some point in their career. Alexander McQueen often drew upon his hardscrabble childhood to influence his collections, and Jeremy Scott constantly references childhood with his use of SpongeBob, teddy bears and Star Wars for Moschino. However, no one uses childhood as a muse quite like Taiwanese fashion designer Shueh Jen-Fang for her brand Jenny Fax.

Set up in 2011, Jenny Fax stood out from the crowd right from its inception. With carefully crafted techniques and an extraordinary palette of colours and materials, Jen-Fang gives her pieces a unique sense of bizarre beauty, as if coming straight from a child’s imagination. Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of every Jenny Fax collection are the references to Cabbage Patch Kids. In 2012 it was models clutching dolls on the runway; 2016 gave us brightly coloured Cabbage Patch faces printed on t-shirts; and most recently we were shown a bright pink Cabbage Patch hand muff. It’s a genuinely eerie way of bringing a designer’s personality to a collection.

Aside from the creepy doll similarities, each of Jen-Fang’s collections is completely unique. Spring/Summer 2012 saw inspiration from school, delivered in a collection that was all about uniforms and prom queens. With pleated skirts, plain white shirts and colour-tastic manga images, the show presented the semblance of a love child of Disney and St Trinians.

2014’s indie-goth collection served up a concoction of neon coloured dresses and trousers contrasted with simple monochrome bralets, accented with simply-patterned black lace over dresses and capes. This collection also included hand-drawn manga prints on t-shirts, adding to the childlike nature of Jenny Fax clothing.

Fast forward to A/W ’18, and Jenny Fax takes a turn in a more sophisticated direction. Schoolgirl pleats have been discarded for pencil skirts and plain white shirts have given way for metallics to take centre stage. This turn to a more traditional womenswear leaves the bizarre aspect to take place in the accessories. Tiny shoes are stuck to the models’ feet whilst plastic hands hang eerily from their ears. Jen-Fang has proven reassuringly that she can remain true to her original take on fashion, even when she’s going in a more stereotypical direction.

Still in its infancy in fashion terms, Jenny Fax has already shown itself as a brand to complete on the world’s stage. With or without childhood attachment, I for one cannot wait to see what they have in store for Tokyo Fashion Week this month.

As the premier platform for showcasing the exceptional talent of students and graduates within the fashion industry, (think Christopher Bailey, Stella McCartney, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson) Graduate Fashion Week 2018 has got international fashion tongues wagging. Innovation, craftsmanship, progression please take a bow.

From vibrant knitwear, flamboyant patchwork, exquisite embroidery to sleek pinstripes, 2018’s graduates did not disappoint.

We feature 3 designers who instantaneously caught our eye.

Maddy Stringer

Maddy Stringer’s collection takes inspiration from Persian rugs and stair runners of her childhood doll’s house, expressed through embossed plastics, faux leather and over-sized silhouettes. Deep venetian reds with flares of magenta and federal blues pulsate throughout the collection, embedding a striking contrast that is electrifying and also brilliant.
