Fashion Month Fall 2021 has brought us a taste of what the future of post-pandemic beauty trends could be. Predictions have suggested that after the global pandemic, we will see a rise in imaginative designs, growth and the celebration of freedom. The daring yet chic beauty looks from Fashion Month represent this expectation well. 

Moschino: Bold and bright 

Moschino created an ingenious short film to showcase their collection. The film began in the city, following through to the countryside, then to an art museum, the jungle and finishing in old Hollywood. Bold lips are a definitive look of the fall season at Moschino – they know how to be adventurous. At the beginning of the film, model Hailey Bieber walks out with a distinct red lip representing the powerful working woman. The countryside section of the short film sees flawless skin with bright nails and vivid peach-toned lips. Instead of the usual autumnal-toned lip shades, Moschino has pushed the boundaries with exciting pink lips. This very surreal production demonstrated the makeup and collection is for exiting lockdown. With the pandemic coming slowly to an end, Moschino’s spectacular makeup looks will be everywhere by the fall. 

Alice + Olivia: Gossip Girl 

During New York Fashion Week, it seems fitting for the programme Gossip Girl to make an appearance. After designer Stacey Bendet and her daughters became obsessed with Gossip Girl during quarantine, she realised how representative the fashion and makeup designs in the programme were of New York. Collaborating with Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman, they created iconic looks symbolic of the show. Inspired by rock and roll, the eye looks were heavy, smoky, and black. The makeup from the collection was a mix and match between two Gossip Girl characters Blair and Jenny. With a combination of Blair’s elegance and Jenny’s grunge, a stunning look was born.

Matty Bovan: Artistic Eyes 

During the colourful London Fashion Week, Matty Bovan brought a twist to the usual eyeliner look. Across the collection were statement eyeliner makeup looks. Painted all across the eyelids were heavy strokes of white and blue. Also seen in the show were gold strokes reaching the temples. Some even more dramatic, extending across the entire upper face. Matty Bovan stated that the idea behind these looks was humanity’s survival against external forces while battling reality. There was an element of storytelling to the show too. The models were representative of a crew of characters shipwrecked by a storm and emerging onto the shore. Imaginative and innovative makeup, ready in time for post-lockdown.

Prabal Gurung: Sleek Braids 

Sleek braids with pointed edges reigned the runway at Prabal Gurung during New York Fashion Week. With the world halting in creativity, Gurung found he lacked inspiration for his fall collection. Therefore, he drew his ideas while reflecting on why he moved to New York 20 years ago. As we live in uncertain times, Gurung wanted to create post-lockdown looks from the collection down to the makeup and hair. Evanie Frausto was the hairstylist behind the powerful braids that will become increasingly trending as we head towards fall. 

Vivienne Westwood: Blushing 

Inspired by the 18th-century, the models at Vivienne Westwood wore circular blush that was far from natural. A painting by Francois Boucher from 1743 inspired the makeup for the Vivienne Westwood show. Makeup artist Pablo Rodriguez created patches of harsh blush on the cheeks to portray the French portraits of the 18th century. Rodriguez described the makeup look as ‘the technicolour cherub’. 

Erdem: New And Improved Liner 

Updating the classic flick of eyeliner, Erdem designed distinctive eyeliner looks that you could see from a distance. Erdem’s modernised eyeliner look was inspired by English ballerina Margot Fonteyn’s on-stage makeup looks and her inspiring journey throughout her dancing career. There were different types of eye looks created with the liner that included an elaborate Cleopatra-like cat-eye. In opposition to the dramatic eye was a simpler, blunt-edged look. Erdem created a look that expresses dancers transitional experience during a performance. 

Emporio Armani: Bringing it back to the 80s

Inspired by the 80s, the Emporio Armani runway resembled something straight out of a dream. Driven by the 80s mood, the makeup designs included natural skin contrasted with a pop of colour on the cheeks. A subtly pink lip matched the delicate blush shade. This look was uncomplicated with refined hints of the electric 80s theme. After the troubling 70s, the 80s saw a boom of creativity. Through 80s inspired beauty and fashion, Emporio Armani is hoping for a similar situation this year as the pandemic comes to an end. 

Bora Aksu: 3D beauty

During London Fashion Week, a new way to cover dark circles emerged. Bora Aksu placed torn astrantia flowers underneath the eyes, leaving the rest of the face minimal. Many makeup trends across fashion month, including Bora Aksu, were inspired by the idea of leaving offline behind and getting back to real life. In a post-pandemic world, the 3D makeup embellishments will be loved and appreciated by many. 

Fendi: The side part

Fendi’s show proved that hairstyles previously deemed as uncool could be re-styled gracefully. The side parting hairstyle has made a comeback on the Fendi runway. Guido Palau was the hairstylist behind this look, making it look effortless. The hair swept from the left to the right of the forehead and secured loosely to the side. Successfully parting the hair to the side on the runway has made a statement that this will be an increasingly popular style as we head into the autumn months. 

Blumarine: Y2K 

The return of Y2K has made its way to the runways once again with Blumarine. Based on the ideas of optimism and sensuality, the looks seen at the Blumarine show commemorates femininity. The butterfly embellishments were created out of crystals by makeup artist Inge Grognard. On either the arms or chest of the models were the butterfly body jewels. A prominent glossy lip and a hint of blush on the cheeks co-ordinated well with the 2000s inspired outfits. This popular confident trend with a provocative element will continue to evolve.

Libertine

Screen printing, bold graphics, embellishment, and embroidery have always been part of Libertine’s otherworldly, whimsical designs since its launch in 2001. 20 years later, Johnson Hartig’s Libertine Fall 2021 collection commemorated the anniversary in a subtle yet poignant manner, by designing a fringe for items that was comprised of Libertine’s past labels. The symmetrical presence in the collection is neatly displayed in the off-white to beige blazer and pants piece, on which a silhouette of a wild garden entwines itself. Robert Burns’ supernatural and religious-themed poem, A Winter Night, was emblazoned across trench coats, the context of which underscored the magical and fantastical often brightly coloured collection. 

A. Potts

Aaron Potts’ collection ranged from yellow, grey, and black hues, ever simple yet captivating. The collection’s shapes and forms were beautifully designed with movement in mind. The contemporary poses and movements made by the model in the yellow draping poncho cape allowed the audience to be drawn in by the stirring of the fabrics and the way they caught the light, which was notable with the metallic silver harem style trousers. The genderless designs allowed the clothes and the models to become one during the display, as the sheer tulle skirt seamlessly moved into the just-below-the-knee black trench coat. Our favourite, however, a floor-sweeping full-skirted gown with sheer inserts and ballooned sleeves. It’s the type of garment you’d love to dance about a manor house in.

Maisie Wilen

The collection to own for the duration and transition from mid to post-lockdown. Maisie Wilen’s symmetrical and kaleidoscopic prints spanned over the entire collection. Maisie Wilen’s previous collections have often been based upon the customer’s need for ahead of the curve style outfits for significant events. For Wilen, the idea that the customer’s significant moments will currently range from zoom calls to Instagram and TikTok posts was clearly taken into account, as the comfortable yet edgy range will allow buyers to smoothly transition from indoors to post-lockdown outdoor events. As the models literally walked on water, the audience felt a weight lifted, watching pastel and neon hues glide before them against a calming sage green curtain. In cheerfully patterned leggings and velvet bootcuts, to pastel patterned sweatshirts. the audience can easily imagine themselves both lounging and posing in Wilen’s collection. 

PH5 

Sustainability meets three-dimensional knitwear can easily sum up PH5’s Fall 2021 collection. Wei Lin and Zoe Champion experimented with dimensions and cuts with a collection that was complied with 2021 appropriate statement pieces. Embodying this, an asymmetrically cut dress with geometric patterns that cleverly added shape, dimension, and sometimes levelness where needed. The dress abruptly became a pale blue piece of knitwear at the collar and sleeves, which perfectly represents PH5’s stray from their typical knitwear into an experimental computative and mathematical style of pattern. Other highlights include a pastel two-piece with contrasting scallops and straight edges as well as a navy overlapping checked patterned knee-length dress with asymmetrical cuts and subtle chain embellishments.

Private Policy 

Private Policy’s Fall 2021 collection made a topical and important statement with their collection. The rise in xenophobia and hate crimes that have targeted Asian Americans is prolific, and Private Policy’s collection can heavily inspire audiences to become engaged and educated on Asian-American and Asian culture, as the collection draws inspiration from Chinese migrants who came to California via the Pearl River Delta. The collection features neutral tones, blacks, and pinks and still incorporates the sloping checked patterns that are something of a Private Policy classic. Speaking to Vogue, Siying Qu said ‘The focal point of both the historical photos and the collection’s look book is a hat with a wide brim that half-covers the eyes, which is regionally specific to the Pearl River Delta’. The aforementioned hat has been crafted Private Policy style and featured in numerous looks in a black carnation pink or sage green, finished with a chunky metallic chain. The collection retains its on brand youthful, wonderful style and successfully incorporates a message of hope, honour, and need for societal improvement. 

Victor Glemaud 

Pinstripes and monochrome, the knitwear genius, Victor Glemaud has turned his attentions to a super casual office inspired collection, in all of its block-coloured glory. Slinky and comfortable perfectly sums up the line, with a section of black and white clothing that is almost close to a very modern, more casual version of the swinging sixties. Flare bottoms came out in force, in pinstripes and knits that would make any buyer feel like they’ve mastered the work-from-home outfit. With the occasional pink and sunny yellow interspersing, the monochromatic black-, white- and rust-coloured ensembles, the collection is essentially the ultimate stylish lock-down wardrobe.

Balenciaga has been frugal with releasing details of the game which only builds fans anticipations, however, it has been revealed that the story progression of the game will entail the Earth evolving from a decayed space to a world which has reconnected ‘a balance between nature and industry’. Visuals are expected to illustrate an eclectic mix of historical archetypes and tech-infused scenes, which are brought to fruition by Balenciaga funding cutting edge computer technology and photogrammetry.

With 2020 taking a hit to creative freedom, the traditional notion of fashion shows is put on a standstill, which forces fashion houses to live and breathe an artistic revolution or get left behind. While Balenciaga is paving the way with fashion and gaming crossovers with producing their own gaming platform, we have seen collaborations with other notorious fashion houses and established gaming names, which signals a newfound relationship between wearable art and virtual art.

The likes of Marc Jacobs, Nike and Valentino have partnered with household name game ‘Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ to produce in-game collections for characters to purchase and wear. Similarly, Italian mogul Gucci has recently signed a partnership with smaller gaming platforms ‘Drest’ and ‘Tennis Clash’. While the luxury fashion houses are the first to dip their toe in the unknown territory of gaming fashion, we are seeing the idea filter through to the high street brands such as UNIQLO, who have collaborated with the widely used mobile game ‘Pokemon GO’.

The worldwide restrictions the year has burdened the world with have taken away what fashions most praised events of the year means, but in times of adversity even creativity cannot be contained and Balenciaga are leading the way of what could be a whole new age for the fashion industry. It isn’t game over yet.
