Whilst brands like Dermalogica have launched interactive, 3D virtual experiences, labels such as Nars have not only created a collection of NFTs, but have partnered with Roblox to incentivise users to remain engaged with their products – whether physically, or online. From Fenty Beauty’s decision to file a trademark for virtual downloadable goods, to L’Oréal’s 17 trademark applications linked to NFTs, it can’t be denied that the beauty world is set to tackle just about anything that comes its way.

Below, you’ll find everything you need to know about the five beauty brands that are taking the metaverse by storm.

Dermalogica

In July 2021, Dermalogica soft-launched its virtual reality e-commerce storefront, enabling users to purchase featured products. Whilst including an avatar of Dermalogica’s VP of Technology and Innovation, Dr. Angela Murphy, users can employ a Dermalogica aesthetician locator, utilise a free skin analysis face mapping tool, and even watch educational videos on the brand’s latest products. Whilst heightening brand awareness and driving website traffic, it’s Dermalogica that undoubtedly has innovation at its forefront.

Nars

Sold via NFT marketplace Truesy to intentionally coincide with National Orgasm Day, in July 2021, Nars Cosmetics commissioned three artists to create NFTs inspired by their signature Orgasm line, with prices ranging from $50 to $500. To make matters more exciting, Nars further entered the metaverse when they partnered with Supersocial to launch an immersive virtual experience on Roblox. The feature, known as Nars Color Quest, was inspired by the brand’s Laguna and Light Reflecting product franchises, depicted via four different islands. Each is home to a non-playable character, including founder and creative director François Nars, where users can use virtual currency to purchase a plethora of virtual looks and merchandise – building their very own makeup palettes inspired by real-life products. Targeting 13 to 24 year-olds, Nars are inevitably set to conquer the next generation of beauty fanatics.

Clinique

Recently, Clinique launched its inclusive ‘Metaverse Like Us’ NFT project, partnering with makeup artists Sheika Daley, Emira D’Spain, and Tess Daly. Within the brands collection of avatars, 60% depict people of colour and 20% represent those suffering from issues such as Vitiligo and Down Syndrome, ensuring that a wide range of communities receive the representation they deserve in the virtual realm. Whilst the avatars are more than just images and can be used to travel between different metaverse spaces, each of the beauty looks represent an achievable reality utilising Clinique’s staple products. In addition to boosting sales, Clinique is simultaneously opposing the unrealistic beauty standards that are embedded within our everyday reality, taking advantage of new technologies to advocate individuality in all its shapes and sizes.

Byredo

As an increasing number of its counterparts continue to invest in the digital realm, Byredo has caught on. Partnering with Nike’s digital fashion startup, RTFKT, the pair are set to release a series of “digital and physical fragrances.” Made up of 26 different components that reflect a variety of emotions, such as harmony and naivety, the collectable smells are available in limited numbers, solely existing within Web 3.0 and flaunting their title as ‘the scent of the metaverse.’ Both bold and experimental, we wouldn’t expect anything less from a label like Byredo.

Charlotte Tilbury

This April, Charlotte Tilbury launched its 3-Dimensional, immersive virtual shopping world, including a virtual try-on feature as well as the chance to book 1-2-1 virtual consultations. Collaborating with e-commerce platform Obsess to launch the Pillow Talk Party Virtual Wonderland, guests are met by a 3D avatar of Charlotte Tilbury herself, accessing exclusive content and engaging with the ‘shop with friends’ feature. What better way to celebrate the success of a collection as iconic as this one?

Vanngo tells-all during a collaborated YouTube video over on Karlie’s channel ‘Klossy,’ emphasising the importance of exfoliating, SPF, and lymphatic draining that’ll have us rushing for the facial rollers in no time. 

The video starts off with a fresh faced Karlie applying her favourite Estee Lauder Sugar Scrub treatment to her lips, a step that according to Vanngo, is frequently forgotten. “I think the best way is just exfoliating the lips and then applying a lip balm on top before you apply any makeup.” Mentions Vanngo, explaining that having a smooth base to work with is paramount to achieving any red carpet-worthy look.

The facial massage technique has been steadily gaining popularity over the years for its effective firming and lifting results, with stars such as Kourtney Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, and Romee Strijd frequently owing their youthful complexions to it. Estée Lauder is taking their renowned night serum beyond the stratosphere. This is one giant leap for the beauty conglomerate, skyrocketing their social media presence to new levels.

NASA teamed up with Estée Lauder after they responded to NASA’s call for commercial partners earlier this month. They are forking out $128,000 for a four-and-a-half-hour shoot shot by NASA astronauts.

Interestingly the astronauts themselves will not be featured in the shoot, so do not expect a NASA-inspired skincare routine video anytime soon.

Ten bottles of the ‘Advanced Night Repair’ serum will be launched into space at the end of September and are expected to arrive at the International Space Station no later than October 1st

.

The shoot will take place in the space station’s most iconic spot, the Cupola, which boasts panoramic views of Earth. The hexagonal observatory will serve as the backdrop for a series of videos and photos of the night serum.

This partnership kickstarts NASA’s plans to create a space-based economy. They are venturing into commercial opportunities, promising companies an out of this world setting for advertisement.

Estée Lauder is not the first company to use the ISS commercially. Pizza Hut beat them in this particular space race in 2001 when they delivered pizza to residents of the ISS.

The NASA x Estée Lauder photoshoot pioneers NASA’s plan to develop what it calls a “low-Earth orbit economy”. Estée Lauder is the first-ever beauty brand to launch into space with NASA, opening up a galaxy of possibilities for the future of marketing.

By the time the night serums return to Earth in Spring 2021, the potential for space-based advertisement will be astronomical.

The Body Shop has a more affordable alternative with their Hemp Overnight Nourishing Rescue Mask at £18. Your skin will be softer and dewier, without oiliness or residue. Hemp seed oil is known for its nourishing and skin-restoring properties which will relieve dry skin of its tight feeling. For a similar price, Glow Recipe have an overnight face mask inspired by Korean skincare. Their Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask is a creamy formula packed with avocado to nourish and manuka honey to firm. However, for those with more oily skin, Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask has a unique texture which clings to the skin and absorbs with speed but is still light enough to use throughout the day.

It’s important to give attention to your eyes and lips too, both of which can also be treated overnight. Laneige do a range of sleeping masks for both eyes and lips which hydrate, plump and depuff, so you wake up fresh-faced with well-rested and healthy-looking eyes and lips. Quite frankly, these are the products we pray so heavily never become discontinued because nobody does it like they do. If you’re looking for cult beauty items that have changed the game then look no further.

GLOSSIER BOY BROW

Eyebrows were most definitely the star of the show this decade and could you think of a more apt product to pinpoint a brow revolution? Whilst an honourable mention must be given to Benefit’s Gimmie Brow for pioneering the brow gel bonanza that took the beauty world by storm, Glossier came through with something else. It’s long-lasting, simplistic, holds a great formula and has what I believe to be a decent shade range too. It accentuates each individual hair and despite obviously making you look put together, the mere action of combing through your brows definitely makes you feel better too. Brow self-care at its finest.

YSL TOUCHE ECLAT

In 2015, The Telegraph stated that one of these ‘golden pens’ was sold every 10 seconds. Amazing. Coined to be much more than just a concealer pen which of course are much more common now than they perhaps were when this product made its breakthrough, it is an illuminating yet covering pen. A firm favourite of makeup-artists and people keen for a quick-fix, innovative utensil and product in one, that can transform dullness and dark circles. Long live this iconic product and its multiple shades.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY PILLOW TALK LIPSTICK

A nude to end all nudes. Forget everything else you know and stop clutching your MAC Velvet Teddy so hard, there’s a new girl in town. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself and be amazed.

CHANEL SOLEIL TAN DE CHANEL

Okay so first thing’s first, it’s not cheap. Priced at £40, this cream-gel bronzer, not to be mistaken with contour, is the epitome of luxury. I believe this item finds itself somewhere between the likes of a KKW contour stick and a Benefit Hoola bronzer. It’s like powder meets liquid and forms an easy-to-apply balm that is buildable, soft and moisturising. Best applied with a brush or sponge, I find Soleil de Tan gives the skin a warm, peachy sun-kissed glow that genuinely looks believable. It’s not going to give you contoured realness, nor is it going to give you heaps of colour on first application, but with buildable control, it can be incredibly flattering and long-lasting. My only niggle? One shade. That’s it. Brilliant if you have light to medium skin tones but I can only guess it’s not going to show on medium to deep skin. Disappointing, but this product would rock if more shades were to be produced. After all, it’s one of a kind and I am yet to find anything like it. Did I mention it literally lasts forever?

ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR

Trustier than your mum’s emergency umbrella, this full-coverage foundation will seal away a multitude of sins. Whilst I have always shied away from such thick, no-going-back, high coverage foundations and concealers, this is a brand of foundation that I have heard pop up time and time again from people of all generations. I believe it is great for those with discolouration who seek a long-lasting formula. Not a fan of the flawlessly finessed look? Try Double Wear Light for a more sheer finish.

BEAUTY BLENDER

Although I don’t think the makeup sponge age can exactly be called revolutionary, seeing as makeup artists and drag artists have been using them for years, there is no doubt that the infiltration of the original beauty blender into mainstream makeup is incomparable to another beauty tool I know. Behold, the beauty blender. Perfectly round, spongey and absorbent too. Almost guaranteed to feature in all of your friend’s makeup bags, this is exactly the sort of cult product that we will see for years to come – just look at the sea of dupes out there to prove it.

I mean we all know MAC is iconic for their lipsticks and the most iconic shade ‘Ruby Woo’. I’m telling you this red is s-t-u-n-n-ing. The colour payoff is so intense and gorgeous, no wonder it’s a worldwide bestseller.

Burt’s Bees Moisturising Lipstick ‘Scarlet Soaked’ £9.99

If you’re looking for more of a natural product this is the best shout for you. 100% natural and full of moisturising ingredients such as beeswax, moringa oil, raspberry seed oil and vitamin E. There is no chance of dry lips after putting this on let me assure you! It is more of a sheer formula, but you can build it up a tad to add colour.

Revlon Super Lustrous Cream Lipstick ‘Fire and Ice’ £7.99

Again ICONIC. This lipstick was first introduced in 1952, and 68 years on it’s still a bestseller! In all fairness, it probably is more suited to a fairer complexion, but man is this glossy for a cream formula.

Maybelline Color Sensational ‘Ruby For Me’ £6.99

Now, in my opinion, this is probably all round the best choice here. Not only does this lipstick include honey nectar which leaves such a sensuous finish, but it was tested and proved to work on 50 different skin tones! So you just know it will look sickening on you.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream ‘Amsterdam’ £6

So, I have always been a huge fan of NYX lips; the price is insane and the product really compares to the higher end brands. This is just another example, a velvety smooth lightweight and creamy formula with a stunning colour…no wonder it’s such a fan fav.

E.L.F Matte Lip Color ‘Rich Red’ £4.50

I mean for £4.50 you really don’t have an excuse to not try this one out! I’ve spent more on freaking chocolate bars. Not only is it cheap as chips, but it includes vitamins A, C and E which is going to give you a healthy moisturised matte lip. It’s also super easy to apply as it’s basically a small crayon applicator.

Better get down there and grab what you have your eyes on before they’re gone! This totally proves that you do not need to splash out for a good lip product (although luxury is luxury right..?).

For all the times your makeup starts running and for all the reasons, sex should not be one of them. The mascara running red lipstick smudged look is not the look to go for during those intimate moments so here are a few products that keep your face on when everything comes off.

Base:

Start the base with the fantastic Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer £17. Oil-free and waterproof, not to mention makes your skin crazy smooth and silky to apply the rest of your make-up on; trust me your skin isn’t going anywhere with this bad boy. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation £34 is such an iconic waterproof base, we all know about its sweat-proof, oil proof, waterproof, life-proof properties. It’s a liquid to powder formula so it dries matte to the point where you don’t even really need a powder, and the coverage is just to die for it’s the perfect in-between medium and full coverage. Next, try Smashbox Studio Skin 24hr Waterproof Concealer £20. I mean I don’t need to say much more, the name kind of sells itself…it works.

Now one thing which you never really think could be waterproof is bronzer, think again! IT Cosmetics Ombre Radiance Bronzer £25 is such a fantastic bronzer and it won’t budge after the dirty deed. It has such a naturally pretty warmth to it and also has something called ‘Drops of Light Technology’ which basically means it will treat and nourish the skin while it imparts a seamless, sun-kissed glow.

To set the skin and lock all that into place (light it needs locking anymore) the famous and iconic Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 is always a winner, you really can’t go wrong I mean this stuff is like cement.

Eyes:

Eyes can be a tricky one with eyeshadow, but Nudestix Magnetic Nude Glimmers are so great, they come in 3 shades and as well as being waterproof (obvs at this point) the gel can be layered up to create more and more luminosity and glow to the eyes; they also can be used to highlight the cheekbones too for some extra glitter. A great budge -roof eyeliner is the Inglot Black Gel Liner £14 which, to be honest, if you compare to some other gel liners it’s actually super cheap and so worth it in my opinion. Pair that with Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara £27, which instantly thickens and lengths your lashes with one sweep from the brush.

Finish the look off with Beauty Bakerie Matte Lip Whip £19. I mean these lip formulas are so waterproof that they have their own remover just for this product! They have incredible pigment and glide on so smooth you’ll think its butter.

When you’ve tried all these products gems your face will be so sex proof you’ll look better after than before!

Base

1). We’re going to start this at the very beginning with your primer; Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Moisturiser & Primer £44.50 for 50ml. An absolute beauty this one is – it works as a moisturiser and primer and is so unbelievably nourishing on the skin, not to mention it will keep your make-up dewy and on your skin all day.

2). Next, layer on the iconic Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation £42, an oil-free, lightweight and so-silky-you-could-die foundation. Super buildable and applies seamless, no wonder this is the Artist’s Choice 10 years in a row!

3). A winner as always is YSL Touche Eclat High Coverage Concealer £26; So, this isn’t the regular one everyone has dribbled over for years, that one was actually marketed as just a highlighter whereas this one is predominantly a high coverage concealer. You still get the beautiful luminosity of the OG Touche, but also a weightless and long wear concealer… really struggling to find a flaw here.

4). If that wasn’t illuminating enough for you so far, I’ve only just begun! Add even more glow with the YSL Touche Eclat Shimmer Stick £27. Cream/liquid products are really going to make your cheeks extra dewy as they catch the light super easily. This stick highlight comes in 5 different shades, my fav being the gorgeous champagne ‘Light Gold’, I mean just go into a store and swatch this on your hand it genuinely might be the prettiest thing I have ever seen. (Prove me wrong, I dare you!!) I mean the actual product has all the good stuff: easy to blend, super creamy and a lightweight texture. TBH, if you like a shimmery bronzer, you can easily use a darker shade to add some warmth to your skin.

5). Totally changes the game: NARS Orgasm Liquid Blush £25. I mean NARS’ ‘Orgasm’ range is iconic, we all know and adore it…this is just in a lightweight liquid form so it’s just another staple to add to the dewy trend.

6). Lastly for the base, slap on that Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray £24 to make sure your base doesn’t move all day…whatever your activity is. I’ve heard great things about this setting spray being 100% sex-proof; you can be the judge of that.

Eyes and Lips

1). Keeping with this gorgeous healthy glowy skin trend, Charlotte Tilbury Bigger Brighter Eyes Palette ‘Exagger-Eyes’ £40. OK, I know you’re thinking it’s a little pricey for 4 shadows, but honey if you just knew what these bad boys were capable of! All you have to do is watch one of those CT adverts I was talking about. Nuff said. I mean they’re just everything: buttery, pigmented, the product itself is just such amazing quality it’s insane! You’ll thank me.

2). The current brow trend is messy, undone and natural; easy as pie, brush up your brows with the tinted Benefit Cosmetics Gimmie Brow+ £22.50 for a full and put together bro duo that takes literally seconds.

3). You need to keep them hooked on your eyes…the only way is to add a sultry liner on your waterline. A black liner on the waterline is so sexy it really draws you to the eyes; even I give myself a double-take when I whack some on. My fav is Estee Lauder Double Wear Waterproof Eyeliner ‘Noir’ £19, just glides on the eyes so easily and stays all day. Even great for contact wearers like myself.

4). To finish the eyes off, add some famous Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara £22 (TBH if your flying solo this V day, this mascara is supposedly better than sex, and if you have a partner, you’re going to need that waterproof one…win win). Volumizing without being too clumpy, and it deff won’t transfer on your lids or under eye.

5). Last but certainly not least, chuck on some Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick ‘Glowing Jen’ £28. This was actually named after Jennifer Aniston and I believe a portion of the money for this collection goes to charity. Moisturising and so pretty and glowy oh my goodness it’s insane.
