In 2022 the skincare craze was huge, from slugging to laminated skin, we saw it all, and this year we expect the frenzy over our skin to continue.   

So, what can we expect in 2023, we hear you ask? Below we have included some predictions we have of what we think we’ll see happening within the world of skincare in 2023.  

Skin Minimalism

This is one new trend that we have pre-empted for a while. Gone are the days of having a 10-step skincare routine that is over complicated and for most of us simply too long. At the end of a long day, the last thing most of us are thinking about is our 10-step skincare routine, for the most part, it is inaccessible and unrealistic. So, in 2023, we expect to see a rise in minimal skincare routines or the use of products that target multiple areas combined into one tube.  

The no-nonsense simplified skincare routines are more accessible and more effective at looking after our skin. The main concept is doing more with less, with the removal of the excessive routines and the stress that comes along with them, you will be pleasantly surprised to see an improvement in your skin quality by the end of it.  

So, what’s included in this new minimised routine? All you need in your new 2023 skincare routine is a gentle face wash, vitamin c, hyaluronic acid, moisturiser, and sunscreen. In the evening all you really need is a gentle wash, some retinol, and a moisturiser and that’s it!  

What makes skin minimalism so popular is how simple and easy it is. There are also some great products on the market that have two and sometimes three of these steps included within them, so there is no need to have hundreds of different tubs and tubes of products that you simply don’t need.  

Garner makes an amazing 2-in-1 product that is a moisturiser with vitamin c and SPF 25! It prompts healthier, more glowing skin after 7 days and is an amazing product if you’re looking for an item that will target multiple steps in your skincare routine.

There are plenty of moisturisers on the market that include SPF within them which makes life so much easier for us and our skincare routines, even on our lazy days.   

Skin Cycling

This next trend is already huge online and will help you achieve glowy-looking skin. Skin cycling is when you alternate different products on different days of the week to help maximise their usage and provide you with glowy and healthy skin. Skin cycling does two main things, it prevents irritation and allows you to get the most out of the products that you are using.  

Your morning skincare routines will stay the same, but it is your night-time routine that you should cycle to help nourish and improve your skin. The basic routine is as follows.  

Night One- Exfoliate

By exfoliating, your skin will give you an immediate glow alongside prepping your skin so that you get the most out of the products you’ll use on night two. The Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is a great exfoliant for targeting blemishes and removing dead skin cells.  

Another good product that you could use at this step of the skin cycling routine is the Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant as it works to unclog your pores and contributes to a radiant-looking complexion.   

Night Two- Retinol

On night two it is recommended that you add retinol to your skincare routine. Retinol is one of the most powerful skincare products that you can use on your skin for its properties that help promote cell regeneration and removes the appearance of fine lines.  

No7 does an amazing retinol that is perfect for beginners and is fragrance-free. Medik8 also does a superb retinol that is perfect for sensitive skin and is gentle upon application.  

When you start adding retinol to your skincare be aware of the percentage of retinol you are adding. If the percentage is too high, it can be very damaging to your skin and cause breakouts and peeling.  

Your best to start off with a product that is below 1% of retinol as these products won’t be as aggressive on your skin and they’ll allow you to slowly build up your skin barrier and increase the percentage over time.

Nights Three and Four – Rest and Recover

Nights three and four are all about allowing your skin to rest and recover. Avoid using any exfoliating acids and retinoids and focus mainly on hydrating and nourishing your skin.   

Skin Barrier Treatment

If you haven’t already started working on your skin barrier health, then you need to start asap. When your skin barrier is damaged, your skin is open to the elements. External irritants and pollutants are more likely to get into your skin and therefore make your skin more prone to acne. Over-exfoliating and using too many acne products also impact the health of your skin barrier and in some cases can even make your acne worse!  

So how can we fix our skin barriers? Well, it’s simple, stop using overactive products. These are your retinol and harsh exfoliants that your skin may either not be ready for yet or is being damaged by their over usage. Harsh ingredients can do more damage than good to your skin, so it is recommended to avoid exfoliating for two weeks and at this time focus more on hydrating products.  

Focus on products that include niacinamide, ceramides and probiotics alongside stopping over cleanings your skin and invest in getting a gentle and soothing cleanser instead. Be careful to not overwhelm your skin at once with lots of new products, keep it sweet and simple.  

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Balm B5 Multi-Purpose Repairing Balm is a versatile balm that is brilliant at restoring your skin barrier as it is super hydrating and soothing for your skin. This first fit is exactly why we love her. It is chic, cool and unforgiving. Rosalia channels the bad bitch energy with her attitude and choice of style pairing. Faux fur cuffs are a Y2K trend that has gotten better with age and so we are pumped it is within our Rosalia looks. The full monochromatic red look is going to stand-out wherever you are and you are gonna feel like the main character, that is for sure.

Another red look making it into our style edit. We can’t get enough of sheer and neither can Rosalia. Adding some sheer to your wardrobe with get you on lines with the style icon and make throwing together outfits so much easier. The fluffy bucket hat is an accessory you want to familiarize yourself with this SS23.

Rosalia’s Latin Grammy Awards outfit was a gorgeous fully sequined gold gown. The off-the-shoulder bardot dress was an iconic fashion moment for the singer as she turned heads on the red-carpet. The high leg-slit is giving us a moment and we are here for it.

This is amazing and the new collection, which will be released on February the 13th, is paving a future for worldwide denim production. It is also… incredibly cool.

Diesel and denim go hand-in-hand together. The fabric is paramount to the brand and therefore needs to undergo a constant style evolution to stay relevant. The new Pre-Spring drop has done just this, but has also taken huge leaps in sustainable production which makes this collection fit for the future of fashion. Fabric sustainability specialist, Tejidos Royo, has joined forces with the brand to help make ‘Rehab Denim’ their most environmentally friendly release to date. So, what is specifically unique about this game-changing drop? 

In the creation of the denim garments, scraps from the cutting process have been incorporated, cutting down on material waste and material consumption. Garments are constructed from 100% recycled cotton and recycled elastane, which is super important as pre-consumer waste has been utilised and not disregarded. The denim drying process typically requires mass water consumption and high chemical usage. By utilising Dry Indigo® Technology, there is a zero-water consumption rate and chemical and energy usage significantly decrease. These are amazing initiatives which we are happy to support.

The collection itself is full of styles we want in our wardrobe asap. The three washes available are Bleach, Shadow and Fade-Out, giving us multiple choices to pick from. The silhouettes and styles are cool and laid-back, but trust us, you don’t want to be laid-back about getting your hands on the new denim, as it is sure to be a sell-out.  

Monster cargo pants with a toggled waist and an asymmetrical A-line skirt will be perfect for Spring 23 and right on time for the resurgence in denim. I was really excited to hear your story as it’s very much what Voir fashion is about; bold females that shake up industries.

Just to kick off, you come from a musical background, don’t you?

I spent around 16 years working in live music. That’s what I always used to want to do, so, I started when I was about 16 and just worked my way up from intern to music agent. I always knew I’d work in live music so that was a big passion at the time.

That’s really cool. So, when you were working in live music were you personally performing?

I wasn’t performing. What we did with the music agent is looked after the live careers of artists and bands. So, anything to do with live shows such as booking festivals, gigs and seeing where they would play and building their live career was managed through us.

I know with most entrepreneurial stories, it is about seeing a gap or feeling some sort of frustration. How did you transition into beauty?

I had a friend who was the beauty director at Stylist magazine and we used to go on nights out and I would complain about the hair products available to me, where I had to go and buy them, and just my experiences in general. Then she asked me to write about it and put it into an article for her so I did. It was one of their most read articles so they asked me to contribute as a beauty writer on a freelance basis which I did for two years and that’s how I got into it. I’ve always been passionate about beauty but I just didn’t feel like it was for me and part of my role was to recommend beauty products for the magazine and I struggled. I was putting in products that were just ‘ok’ because I didn’t have anything else to recommend.

At the time, which was about 5 to 7 years ago, a lot of the products I was importing were from the US and back then it used to take around 3 to 4 weeks to arrive. So I really struggled to find products that I thought were great and that’s where the seed was really planted. I remember waiting for a brand like this to come along and I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t anything that was effective for my hair, smelt great, looked great and was cool. It didn’t exist and I couldn’t see it anywhere so that’s when I decided to do it.

That’s funny because when I was researching, I saw one of your comments when you said that you were sick of seeing the same bog-standard pictures on black hair products and you know… it’s all like the same sort of graphics and visuals that you see in all the stores. I thought that was quite an interesting point as well and because the brand is so cool, it’s got a real 90’s flair to it.

So, in terms of taking the shift to do that, that’s quite a jump and quite bold you know because launching a product brand is very expensive… How did you find that process?

Well, I left my big music job and went to another job but then got made redundant almost immediately. I had nothing to do there anyway *laughs* so it was no surprise. I then spent about 6 months looking for another job in music and there were a few things that I could have taken but I realised my heart wasn’t in it and after about 6 months I was like you know what “this is the time to give this a shot!” So, I used some redundancy money, maxed my credit cards, I was unemployed at the time and just went for it. I got it to sample level and then tested it on about 40 to 50 people. This was for the conditioner, as I had just launched it and they all came back saying it was the best conditioner they’d ever tried so that’s when I knew it was time to just go for it.

One thing I definitely did was created the brand before it even existed, I wrote a press release, had the design which I worked on with an artist called ‘Ted’s Draws’ and if someone would ask me “What do you do for a living?”, I would say “Oh I’m just about to launch a beauty brand”. I just spoke it into existence I think *laughs*.  It was so different that when I took it to a PR, they wanted it immediately and then helped me get contacts for Liberty and Cult beauty. For the Liberty meeting, I prepared a week, got a taxi in because I didn’t want to look like I’d been on the tube *Jyoti laughs* and walked into this meeting ready to pitch the hell out of it. They were like “we’re definitely having this product” and I was like Oh! And then I gone within 10 minutes. I didn’t know what to do with myself.

They said they tried it, absolutely loved; the branding, everything. So, they launched it in the front window of the store. I got nothing but yes’ so it just felt like a no brainer, I can’t really describe it any other way. The product was there, everything was there, the branding was there and that had been because of years and years of my life experiences which I feel went into that bottle… tube! Not bottle *laughs*

That’s crazy. It sounds like there’s been some triumph there. But I have to be completely honest when I say I’ve spoken to so many entrepreneurs and I’ve rarely had anyone say to me that they got so many yes’. Did you feel like it happened quite soon, that it went like that for you or was it quite a tough one?

 I don’t feel like it was soon because this was years of writing and experience, and I spent a year working on it before it launched. So, it wasn’t immediate but I didn’t put it out there until I knew it was 100% ready. It was so different that it couldn’t be ignored and ultimately the results spoke for themselves so when people tried it, they were like “Wow! Look at my hair!”

That is so cool. You also had a big year last year. Are you going into Skincare now as well?

Yeah, there were 2 body products that I always wanted. The body conditioner came about because people kept telling me that they were putting the deep conditioner on their skin *laughs* and I was like “don’t do that!” *laughs* and I just kept getting loads of comments like “I wish this was a body butter” or “I wish this was a body cream”. Body lotions traditionally have no fun in them; They take ages to sink in when your cold out of the shower. And there’s either the really expensive ones that you’re rationing so that it can last a long time, or there’s the drug store ones that you put on but it doesn’t really do anything. So, I knew that there was a massive space to upgrade the body lotion experience where it smelt great, hydrated your skin, lasted a long time and sunk in fast.

Same with the body scrub, it would either be the expensive ones or too thick and too coarse, so you’re in there scrubbing for hours. There’s just no joy from that experience and I’ve always loved to scrub. I love it! Like it’s my treatment of choice. I used to go to a spa and love a body scrub so it’s something I wanted to bring to Dizziak formulas.

That’s really cool. Where do you operate from now? Do you have your own office space or do you still work from home?

I work from different spaces, I’ve got some spots *laughs* around London but I just need my laptop so I can move around.

Another highlight you had last year was Dua Lipa becoming one of your investors. How did that come about?

Well, I knew her management at the time a few years back and I passed some Dizziak over to her and she loved it. That’s when the conversation started a few years back and I guess I just presented it and said “do you want to come in?”. I’d always had her in mind; I thought she was really cool and I loved her strong opinions. She’s London centric but has global appeal. I just thought it would be a really good match, and it has been.

You also won some awards last year! It’s been a big year in which you’ve had quite a lot happen. Would you say that’s been the biggest year so far?

Erm, I don’t know *laughs* I just keep going *laughs* I don’t really stop. When everyone stops at the end of the year and goes through everything, I don’t. *laugh* I never stop so I don’t really see it, I see it as one. Just keep going, keep the energy up and keep moving is one of my moto’s that I kind of live by anyways!

Is there anything that you’ve got coming up in 2023 that you’re allowed to tell us about?

There’s some hair products that will be coming out. The range for Dizziak will always be kept relatively small. I don’t want to be one of these brands that have 30 different products that all do the same sort of thing. I work hard on each formula so they come out when they’re ready and when they’re done. But, there’s definitely a couple that you will see quite soon.

It’s so exciting because there’s so many positive reviews and it seems like as soon as people they get their hands on it, they can’t really live without it. What’s your secret sauce… what sets you apart from your competitors?

I don’t care about profit margin enough, so that’s probably what it is. I spend the money on the ingredients to get the product where it needs to be. I think, if you’re a massive multi-national brand, you’re not going to spend that money. You’re just going to focus on marketing and branding of something that’s kind of average and that will get you sales. I take the hit basically on the cost of it because why else would I do it? I didn’t dream of being a businesswoman, ever! I just wanted to like, I mean I’d do nothing if I.. *laughs* No I’m joking *laughs*. If I know the market is so competitive, then why would I go out there with something average? That wasn’t going to be me.

So branding is the key part, most importantly it’s your formulas and you’re prepared to take whatever it takes?

Yeah, number one, it’s got to be effective and there’s no reason why it can’t also look great! The scent was so important to me as well. I’d grown up having to use products that always had this sort of artificial sickly fruit smell that I cannot bear. So I really wanted something that was fresh, genderless, and that you would never get sick of. It’s been a long, long time for me! *laughs*

Also the branding is just timeless!

That’s what I wanted. I wanted a staple brand that wasn’t going to be the ‘hypiest’ brand out there because I wanted it to be a “you can trust this brand” and you can always come back to it. It will always be there, be the best it can be and not just hype for a couple of years and then go away.

So I know you said you never really set out to be a businesswoman and never had a big entrepreneurial journey in mind but what advice would you give to someone who wants to launch a beauty brand or would want to come into this?

I feel like people need to listen to themselves more and I mean that quite broadly in the sense that you should listen to advice but you really need to have some sort of gut instinct about things, and you need to be able to trust that.

Also, if you’re looking to launch a brand, stop looking at what everyone else is doing because we’re just getting millions and millions of these copycat brands. Find something that actually matters, that’s different, that’s unique. Otherwise, unless you have millions and millions of pounds, you’re just going to be struggling next to other brands for the rest of time. And it is hard work, so essentially listen to yourself, set yourself apart.

It’s been so amazing speaking to you and listening! Thank you so much. To say you never set out this journey, you were clearly naturally always an entrepreneur and destined to be one!

]]> We have got the reliable looks for this Valentine’s Day (or Galentine’s Day) sorted. A night which can cause apprehension and nerves is made easier by the good old reliable LBD. A simple look which has helped women for decades dress for almost any occasion. So, we are dedicating our Valentine’s style inspiration to the LBD!

We have shaken it up by adding some variations of black fits, with some of the hottest looks and trends. Cupid will be gasping for breath at the sight of you in one of these fits.

The LBD

The classic LBD in 2023 is all about leather. Sami Miro is giving us amazing Valentine’s evening style inspiration with this seductive Open Seam amfAR mini dress. The dress is well-fitted and features the beloved 2023 symmetrical cut-out trend. Styled with statement silver jewellery and a matching handbag, this rendition of the LBD is a favourite of ours this year.

Oh hey there Delilah…you have smashed this look. Another take on the LBD for the 14th. A stunning satin black gown with a plunging halter-neckline. The playful jewellery and the oversized leather jacket is a styling choice we are loving. The elegance of the dress partnered with the accessories and jacket gives the whole fit an edgy and cool aesthetic.

Two Pieces are Better than One

If you are feeling confident to brave the cold, then Sav Hudson is your style icon for this fit. A super sexy, yet edgy Valentine’s look can be achieved by pairing a pair of combats or leather trousers with a cropped top. Sav is playing right into the gladiator princess trend with this look and it’s a killer combo. The criss-cross halter-neck top would definitely be a wardrobe favourite for this year.

Denim and distressed. Of course, Cannelle Ferragu is giving full loved up energy with her bright red locks and red bejewelled nails. We are more interested in the fit, however. A low rise hemline, an intricately crafted top and a gorgeous fur hemmed coat. The attitude of this look is perfect for Galentine’s as it’s roots are edgy and sexy as opposed to romantic. It would be hard not to feel like the ‘It Girl’ in this type of fit.

Sheer Pleasure

If a catsuit is on the cards for you this V-Day, think sheer. The trend which has taken over and led the body-positivity movement, is all over our Valentine’s radar. Parris (Goebel) in Paris served a confident and head-turning look in her black sheer catsuit. Styling with sunglasses and statement earrings, the look is undeniably attention-grabbing.

Another sheer look from another Paris! We loved this gown and thought the floral embroidered black sheer look would be a gorgeous feminine aesthetic. If you are considering a floaty, floral or feminine look, let Paris influence you. Get this look pinned on your Valentine’s Pinterest board ASAP.

Our last selection for a sheer black look comes from Charithra Chandran. An androgynous aesthetic is constructed through the balance of the conventional masculine and feminine silhouettes featured in this look. The Dior outfit looked whimsically beautiful and sparked our love interest. A not-so traditional Valentine’s look, but nevertheless stunning and super high fashion.

Classic Ballgown

If a Hollywood glamour, classical look is lurking at the back of your mind, Lori Harvey has the content for you. Super fitted and super sensual, the black ballgown will never disappoint. We are vibing with the open back, the front slit and the flared skirt. If a sexy look is your goal, then this style is perfect.

Another gorgeous full-length gown worn by Kendall Jenner gave us jitters. Love is in the air and we are crushing on this dress. Satins and silks are a romantic choice for the evening’s attire. The gold chains acting as dress straps are a touch which we are feeling and the high leg slit, of course, has V-Day written all over it.

Burberry has undergone a rebranding. The iconic British luxury brand has released their latest campaign, which happens to be the first campaign released under the direction of new chief creative officer, Daniel Lee. Burberry are taking a bold step in the modernisation of their brand due to its rich heritage and associated prestigious nature. However, this campaign has shown us they are not sacrificing the historic brand ties to British culture, nor their own brand identity. 

The brand has done well to express to us that this is the new them and changes will be occurring. All past Instagram imagery has been removed, leaving no traces of the past within their social media presence. Their logo has also been updated too, re-enforcing this is not a drill for the fashion giant. A fresh perspective and direction for the brand is on the horizon.

However, the campaign is still heavily influenced by the brand’s heritage and association with Britain. The campaign features many British musicians, including John Glacier and Shygirl. The images were specifically and intentionally captured in front of many famous landmarks around London, such as Big Ben and Houses of Parliament. Their iconic check features in many of the new shots as well as signature pieces, such as the Burberry trench coat. We have therefore been re-assured that they will not lose their heritage, as they adapt for the modern market and consumer. 

We are excited to see what is instore for Burberry as Daniel Lee takes over the branding. A collection has not yet been created under his authority, however, will only be a matter of time.

]]> The 65th Grammy awards brought some insane fashion looks onto our feeds this morning. A huge congratulations to all the nominees and winners, but we want to celebrate the looks we felt were award-worthy in themselves. Here are our favourite 13 looks of the evening:

Lizzo 

Lizzo is an expert at making a fashion statement and she did just that at the awards last night. She wore a gorgeous orange Dolce and Gabbana fit which was an indulgence to look at. The cloaked coat (which resembled more of a duvet cover in shape and size) had beautiful orange 3D flowers worked on to it. She symbolised the beginning of Spring, which was a fresh and long awaited feeling we needed to have.  

Doja Cat 

Doja Cat has had an incredible couple weeks back-to-back of main character fashion moments. After her full-body crystal encrusted Schiaparelli look at Haute Couture week, we had to wonder, how will she continue to meet this ever-rising bar. Her slick Versace look certainly hit the nail on the head. Doja rocked up to the awards in a black vinyl mermaid gown partnered with full-arm matching gloves. The dress was very Morticia Addams as the train was exaggerated and the fabric plays right into the goth-core aesthetic.  

H.E.R 

The peplum returns. We really loved the Bach Mai look which H.E.R wore and can’t imagine how anyone could disagree. The full black was very chic and the sheer and velvet combination complemented each other so well. A lady who loves her shades, she wore round frames and accessorized with layers of silver sparkly necklaces.  

Lourdes Leon 

Creating a similar moment to the red crystals of Doja the other week, Lourdes Leon appeared on the red carpet in a lush Area gown. The gown was also embroidered with sparkly red crystals, coincidence? We will be keeping our eyes open for more of these looks. The floor length dress was a spectacular piece of craft and was very flattering. The striking cross necklace worn was eye-catching and hints towards the punk influences which are coming into 2023 fashion. 

Bebe Rexha 

A pretty vision in pink from Bebe Rexha. The halter-neck dress worn by Rexha was very classic Hollywood and we always appreciate an old Hollywood glamour inspired look. The Moschino design could not have been better showcased than on the ‘I’m Good’ star. Note to self, high-gloves are continuing to pop-up in some of the most spectacular looks of 2023.  

JLO 

JLO does not know the meaning of a fashion flop. Every time she is on the red-carpet, she is wearing incredible outfits which make their way into the fashion history books. The navy Gucci gown was dripped with fringes of crystals and featured a large ruffled sheer train. Nothing is too much sparkle for JLO, so she layered three Bulgari diamond necklaces and threw on a selection of rings.

Camila Cabello

Camila Cabello wore a stunning dress from the PatBo Spring 2023 runway collection. The dress was very elegant but also tapped into multiple major fashion trends of the year. The silver and pearl embroidered aspect of the dress (as well as the jewellery) is something to keep in mind for the up-coming season. The 3D roses are also a design which we are expected to see cropping up in the next few months. We loved the design and think the minimalist simplicity was complimentary and striking.  

Cardi B

 An incredibly high-fashion, almost theatrical look from Cardi B had us on board straight away. A Fantastical piece of design and craft was worn by the star who continues to bring us anthem after anthem. The bright blue cut-out gown was part of the Gaurva Gupta Haute Couture collection which showcased at the Spring 2023 fashion week. Staying away from over-powering the look with jewellery, she opted for no necklace, but diamond earrings and a three-finger ring.  

Beyoncé 

The Queen B broke history at the Grammy awards last night as she took home her 32nd win. The silver and gold Gucci dress was made for a star and she obviously pulled it off beautifully. The record-breaker looked phenomenal in the futuristic reflective mini-dress. We were obsessed with the accompanying black leather gloves which pulled the whole look together seamlessly.  

Anitta

This look was one we couldn’t sleep on. Striking would have been an understatement as the black leather and lace gown was a piece of master craft. The strapless vintage Versace number hugged Anitta’s figure until it flared out into an incredibly artistic train. The train featured layer after layer of ruffle which led the eye through a maze of fabric. Another gown with the Morticia aesthetic, the Versace gown is right on the goth core trend. Anitta embellished with some stunning silver jewellery which complimented the look.

Muni Long

Muni Long took home the award for ‘Best R&B Performance of The Year’ and we are here praising her for her look as well as her win. The sheer gown resembled a pink sky at sunrise. The airy and ruffled effect of the train of the dress was day-dream worthy. Super gorgeous and feminine.  

Megan Fox 

The slim-fitted white gown which Megan Fox wore was a gorgeous choice for the model. The corseted bodice of the dress was fully embroidered with gems and jewels (which obviously matched with MGK’s look for the evening). The dress was divinely feminine and visually eye-catching as it caught the light and glistened. No surprise that it was a Zuhair Murad design.

Paris Hilton

Last night, Paris Hilton gave us a look to remember. The sparkly Celine dress gorgeously dripped down Paris and we loved the cut of the dress. Cut-outs featured in the back and front of the dress (very 2023 if we may say so) and the super fine straps exaggerated the sense of delicacy the gown possessed. Paris also chose to avoid heavy, overpowering jewellery for this look to keep it as minimalist as possible.

]]> Paris Fashion Week is doing what it does best- captivating an audience from around the world as it produces spectacle after spectacle. Paris is not playing or wasting time. The four days of Haute Couture fashion began showing straight off the back of Paris Men’s in a seamless transitional style. But what did we expect? Paris has been the emperor of the fashion world since the concept of fashion was invented. If there’s one week to look to for the high end trends, it’s Paris Haute Couture.

Moments

Expected fashion icons such as Anna Wintour are of course in attendance at the shows, as well as special celebrity guests. So far we have seen Doja Cat embroidered head-to-toe in crystals and Kylie Jenner in a fierce faux fur. Doja was glistening at every angle as she showed her allegiance with Schiaparelli. A moment constructed of 30,000 Swarovski crystals and red body paint, the surrealist beauty of the look was undeniably iconic.

Kylie Jenner also gave us all a moment to discuss in her Haute Couture Schiaparelli. The lion head which was sculpted from foam, silk faux fur and wool, will definitely be going down in fashion history.

Schiaparelli

A fierce show was put on by the legendary French house, Schiaparelli. No surprise, Schiaparelli’s show has given us the biggest moment of the Haute Couture Week… so far. In the early days of the brand’s legacy, controversial and surrealist designs pushed fashion attitudes to develop and modernise. Daniel Roseberry, creative director of the Haute Couture house took this in his stride and got the crowds wild with his fake taxidermy pieces.

Shining a light on the controversial use of fur in the fashion industry, he certainly made a talking piece in the media with his ensemble of wild animals going down the runway. Not only did spectators see the incredibly high fashion lion dress on model Irina Shayk, but also on front row attendee, Kylie Jenner. A moment which has already gone viral on various platforms, the spectacle got everyone talking about Schiaparelli. However, not in the ways they intended. Controversy arose as animal lovers labelled the brand as ‘promoting poaching and animal cruelty’. As Roseberry defended his faux fashion pieces as ‘celebrations of nature’, PETA stepped in to support the fashion looks and their symbolism.

The collection, of course, consisted of more than the iconic trio- the lion, the leopard and the wolf. Hyper-feminine silhouettes which were adapted from traditional menswear was a strong theme running throughout the collection. The extremely low v-cut tuxedo and glamorous black gowns were signature Schiaparelli style. Roseberry has managed to effortlessly capture the brand’s elegant and luxurious origins even in the 21st Century.

Iris Van Herpen

Designer, Iris Van Herpen, envisioned a sensationally touching and proactive display, which was executed magnificently. The SS23 Haute Couture collection, Carte Blanche, was divinely inspired and came to life in collaboration with French creative Julie Gautier. The film was a feminist masterpiece, which tried to shed light on the global strength of women, especially the ongoing resilience of Iranian women. Choosing to show the clothing submerged in deep water was a powerful creative choice which symbolized the external struggles women face in their existence. Water also takes away the voice and ability to hear those consumed under the surface, which is another reference to women’s protest and suffering. The performance was beautifully breath-taking on the surface, however, understanding the meaning behind, transformed the film into a stunningly poignant and touching piece of work.

Known for fluidly constructed designs the Haute Couture collection evolved beautifully from the previous, Meta Morphism, collection. The slow movements of the models brought the clothing to life as it swirled and danced in the motions of the water. The fantastical and SCI-FY nature of the clothing was emphasized in the foreign and unnatural landscape of the film. The beautiful and hyper-feminine styles were captivating as they moved through the water like they belonged, like a mythical and majestic sea creature. The gorgeous organic silk fabrics entangled the dancers, which embraced the restraints and confinements imposed on women. The red corset design worn by Julie Gautier featured red synthetic and real human hair as an emblem of freedom.

Chanel

A Parisian favourite managing to keep on top of the game, ahead of the trends and in the forefronts of our minds. As relevant as they were when they started their sensational journey in the 20th century, Chanel returns every year to showcase their Haute Couture in their home city. The atmosphere of a Chanel show is exclusive and chic. This year for their SS23 Haute Couture, expectations slowly built as soft music began to play. In a circus styled layout, large wooden animal statues were wheeled out. The curiosity blossomed as Camels, elephants and mice all appeared in the form of the overbearing sculptures.

Not was all it seemed for spectators. Grand entrances erupted as one by one, runway models emerged from the wooden sculptures, in true Troy essence. However, these gifts gave us attacks of fashion as opposed to the attack of soldiers. Adhering to the subtle circus themes underlying the collection, the first look to step foot on the runway was suggestive of a ringleader. Kitted in a top-hat and white military parade jacket, the look set the scene for what was to come. Styles incorporated the charming playfulness of circus bowties and majorette silhouettes. This being said, the collection was distinctively Chanel. Classic Chanel styles, black-tipped shoes and tweeds, featured within the SS23 set of looks, importantly reinforcing the roots and heritage of the house. Other classic Chanel distinctions were transformed for the collection to embody the sign of the times. A-line bodices were enriched with tulle ruffles, suit jackets were paired with miniature skirts and styled with bowties and top hats. Embroidered pieces and pearls made their way on to the runway as well, which we were glad to see as they are a symbol of the late designer.

It can be overwhelming and hard to filter through the vast array of images which are appearing on our screens. To help make sense of it all, we thought we would break it down for you. These are our favourites (so far) from Paris Men’s Fashion Week.  

Yves Saint Laurent 

Expectations were high, expectations were met. The French luxury house once again showed the world why they maintain their premium status. To say YSL understood the assignment for menswear AW23 would be an understatement. The chic eveningwear line featured long trench coats, white shirts, and high necklines.

The whole collection, which brought the first day of the fashion week to a close, was sleek and clean-cut. Intimidating and smart, full monochromatic looks were emphasized with up-turned collars and pointed boots. Strong fabrics constructed robust coats which contrasted with satin oversized bows, giving a softness to the collection. One thing is for sure, sleek fashion was placed at the forefront of their AW23.  

Valette Studio 

Founded in 2020, we present the designer brand who are responsible for the collection that had us gasping. Designer Pierre-François Valette creates an aesthetic of ‘Casual Couture’ for both menswear and womenswear. The menswear, which showcased on day one, conveyed a hybrid of streetstyle and formalwear. Comfort is a key influence in their suit design process as well as the use of patterns and colour. New collections take new influences from art and culture in our society, expressing modern life. 

Similar to YSL, most of the looks were sleek and chic. An overarching theme of elegance is hovering over men’s AW23 looks so far. Sharp tailoring and classic pieces of menswear were given a revamp for a modern aesthetic, pushing the everyday societal fashion.  

Kidill  

‘Enfant Terrible’ by Kidill was a show to remember. The clothing debuted on skaters who rolled their way through the concrete building in front of stunned spectators. If the clothing wasn’t classed as cool enough, it certainly was after skaters performed tricks on rails and blocks. The performance gave life to the collection and captured the childlike playfulness which they harnessed during the design process.

The clothing itself was super cool. Super casual styles of oversized t-shirts and baggy matching sets. Edgy pieces with punk influence featured during the performance, which is signature to the brand’s style. Tartan patterns, badged jackets and bandanas- the collection was a skater’s dream come true.  

Egon Lab 

More punk styles have emerged for menswear AW23 as Egon Lab’s latest show has proved their punk influences are giving hardcore 2023 fashion trend. An edgy rooted brand, Egon Lab has the punk subculture running through its veins. Blending the genders in their collections as well as societies predetermined juxtapositions such as romance and rebellion.  

The show starred favourites such as Tayce and Palaye Royale, strutting down the runway in the designs of the French label. Huge exaggerated shoulders featured on boxy over-sized jackets, while other jackets were fully fur covered. Retro floral, tartan and gingham prints made re-occurring appearances on the runway giving flairs of the past in a modern light. Layers showed off conflicting patterns of skinny scarves and shirts on top of long-sleeved t-shirts.
