Rosalía is back with her first drop of 2023 bringing us the laidback and tender alt-pop track ‘LLYLM’. The romantic number was released on the 27^th January and is one to add to your Valentine’s Day playlist. In a rare move, the bilingual singer sings in both Spanish and English in this sweet-sounding sound telling her partner “I don’t need honesty/Baby, lie like you love me” in the chorus. With the mix emphasising the bass and hand-clap rhythm the song is one you’ll want to move to. We’re loving Rosalía’s enchanting sad girl energy on ‘LLYLM’ and are hoping she’ll release more songs like this throughout the year.

The flamenco sensation also released a visualiser alongside the track bringing us adorable coquette style with the singer jumping on a bed wearing a cute grey pleated skirt with ruffled lace peeking out and baby pink boots. The visualiser has 2.7M views within a week of its release.

The Spanish singer has accumulated ten number-one singles in her home country, the most for a local artist, as well as a Grammy and a whopping 11 Latin Grammy awards. Last year she received international acclaim for her album Motomami, which peaked at number 33 on the US Billboard 200.

Meanwhile, the singer Chlöe is taking us to church with her fiery new song ‘Pray It Away’, which was dropped on 27^th January with a sexy music video. Some of our favourite artists gave Chlöe love for the single on her Instagram including Janelle Monae, SZA, Lil Nas X, and Doechii – and we can see why.

The gospel-inspired track has Chlöe asking God to help her forgive her ex and resist her hateful thoughts. Chlöe delivers a powerful vocal performance that R&B fans will adore. With a great beat, angelic backing vocals, and a memorable chorus it’s one you’ll find yourself singing along to in no time.

The video for the song already has nearly 2M providing very popular with fans of the R&B singer. Chlöe looks radiant kneeling in a white ruched off-the-shoulder wedding dress by the altar of a church lit by the light of hundreds of candles. With glitter tears streaming down her face and brown gloss on her lips, we wished we looked that good after a breakup. She swaps the wedding dress for a shorter mesh panelled corset number that allows her to throw herself around the church with passion. The standout look in the video is the fierce tight black PVC dress and pant combo Chlöe dons paired with a wide hat, chunky gold hoops, long leather gloves, and a plum lip – complete baddie energy.

The singer was first known as one half of Chloe x Halle, the R&B duo composed of herself and her sisters Halle Bailey. The sisters have a variety of accomplishments together having starred in TV show Grownish (as well as singing the theme song), appeared in several films and TV series respectively, charted at number 16 on Billboard 200 with their second album Ungodly Hour, earned several Grammy nominations, and performed as openers for Beyoncé’s Formations Tour and Jay Z & Bey’s On The Run II Tour. Could we be seeing them opening for Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour this year?

Now Chlöe’s going solo with her debut solo album In Pieces set to be released in March 2023. ‘Pray It Away’ is the lead single for the album with the previous four singles released last year being scrapped after the singer told her fans that the album had evolved past them in a tweet earlier this year. She told Billboard that when her sister went to London for around eight months to film the Disney live-action reboot of The Little Mermaid, that’s when she started work on the album saying, “I always have my sister’s support, and she will always have mine, no matter what we do together or individually”. We can’t wait to hear more!

How do you feel like you’re at a party without being at a party? Embellish your shoes. Twinkle toes were featured by Gucci, Oscar De La Renta, and Loewe this year, and they hit a 2020 spot: making you feel glamorous when doing anything glamorous is virtually impossible. The shoes have been paired with ballooning print skirts and glittery trousers in a totally wild look designed to take your breath away, or for a more understated vibe, pair with low slung jeans.

Combat Boots

Combat boots for Autumn are hardly groundbreaking, but nonetheless, they are set to be everywhere this season. This year they popped up in collections by Dolce & Gabbana, Paco Rabanne, and Vivienne Westwood, but it was last weeks viral picture of Zoe Kravitz on the set of the new Batman movie, that has ensured combat boots will be everywhere this year. Pair with a leather jacket, for pure punk rock energy, or with a classic pair of denim blue jeans for a more relaxed take.

Nineties and noughties fashion is back with a bang. Puddle jeans, bandanas, and even claw hair clips are all over Instagram’s explore page as people are loving the easy and casual throwback street style. In particular, tiny sunglasses have been back for a while. However, brands have been getting experimental with the now known and loved micro glasses. It’s not enough for them to just be small, now they must be graphic as well. Zany and unapologetically garish shapes are being produced, and we just can’t get enough of them!

Hugely popular by would-be festival-goers are flame glasses and whilst these festivals may have been cancelled this year, it doesn’t look like the glasses have been. Prada has taken this graphic design to a new and luxurious level. Keeping the classic lens and adding a vibrant flame to the rim, this pair of specs perfectly blends old with new to produce some flaming hot glasses.

Shells, hearts, lips and wings are all popular shapes being produced by major fashion houses. Balenciaga’s heart-shaped sunnies feel fresh and youthful whilst Saint Laurent’s cat-eye heart frames create a more flattering shape. They may seem silly at first, but it is exciting to be able to play with such childish, funky and unexpected accessories. Glasses like these are already being replicated by high street retailers like Urban Outfitters.

Gucci have also put their own spin on the heart specs. The ‘Hollywood Forever’ pair in the classic black colour offsets their unorthodox lens, and the gold detailing adds an extra pop of luminosity. Miu Miu is another fashion house that has been combining classic and alternative styles. Their shell-shaped sunnies are reminiscent of the classic Ray-Ban aviator style, but with the added detailing of the shadowed shell rim. This pair of cool blue glasses are perfect for a beach day.

Sunglasses aren’t just protective anymore, they’re a statement too. The shape they come in and the colour you choose means these glasses can be matched to specific outfits and completely optimise your style. Some are even being bejewelled. From hanging charms to diamante detailing, these sunglasses are getting really retro. Emma Chamberlain’s collaboration with Crap Eyewear late last year explored these more fun and vibrant options. The Jinnnn X Percy Lau ‘Bambi 01’ glasses also use this detailing to create a beautiful and colourful pair of folding specs.

Whilst some brands have been going more pop-couture, others have been delving into geometric lenses. Dolce and Gabbana, Chloe, and Dior have all brought out some really refreshing shapes in fun tints. The scalloped edges of the green Chloe glasses add dimension to the frame, and the gold detailing to the Dolce and Gabbana octagonal frames makes these specs look and feel so luxurious.

Brands like Gucci and Versace have been playing with neon colours and semi-transparent, tinted frames. These monochrome specs play with colour and shape to create a young, fun pair of glasses. Gucci have even detailed a neon pair of their specs with tiny stars to exaggerate the youthful look. These eccentric sunnies are an easy way to get funky with your outfits or to add just a little bit of a 90’s pop to your looks. An outfit is never complete without a few accessories, so why not get outlandish and cop a pair of graphic sunglasses this summer?

The undergarment, which was once used to oppress and beautify women, has done a U-turn in its role in our wardrobes, as we have reclaimed it as the empowering fashion statement it is today. It is the one garment that has stood the test of time, surviving revolution, plague, wars and still managed to bounce back after the 90s got its hands on it- what a trouper!

Each fashion month at least one designer has a variation of a corset fiercely strutting down their runway; breathing new life into the garment and making corsets relevant for yet another season, and the 2020 autumn winter catwalks were no exception. From the runways of New York Fashion Week where we had LaQuan Smith pairing modest, traditional-style corsetry with oversized cargo trousers and big leather shoes– so 1500s street.To David Koma’s presentation at London fashion week, where themes of bondage broke free from the shackles of the bedroom with black latex and mesh corsets took centre stage as they were layered over every-day outfits such as boiler suits and T-shirts and shorts; ensuring we are ready for Mr grey any time of the day. The world of runway shows and designer collections can sometimes feel like a distant fantasy reserved for those who have managed to rise through the ranks of the fashion industry, while the rest of us enthusiasts watch from afar (or through our phone screens and Instagram feeds) and marvel at the otherworldly silhouettes of theatrical ball gowns, gilded power suits and myriad other sartorial novelties. When we scroll through endless Instagram stories and images during fashion weeks, sometimes we’re looking to be wowed by such an effulgent array of breathtaking creations that we could only dream of wearing, that are so impeccably crafted that they don’t need to be wearable to be appreciated – but that, when we look to our own wardrobes furnished with comparatively ordinary trappings and encounter the pieces that hang there, won’t make a significant impact on the way we view clothes or the way we get dressed each day.

But most of the time, we’re looking to be inspired, we’re looking for tangible solutions to the conundrum that is getting dressed on a daily basis, for ensembles that could be recreated with clothes we already own or could buy. In other words, sometimes the best shows and collections aren’t always the ones that present the most beautiful and extravagant clothes, but the ones that simply offer subtle styling tips to apply to pre-existing garments in your wardrobe. Beyond abounding maximalist ball gowns and exaggerated textures, the AW2020 runways from New York to Paris played host to plenty of wonderfully wearable ensembles to recreate when you’re feeling limited by your wardrobe.

Veronica Beard

Veronica Beard’s runway debut unveiled 32 of the most covetable, recreatable and wearable looks not just of New York Fashion Week, but of the whole fashion week season. There was nothing mind-blowing or revolutionary, just a collection of clothes that worked together to conjure something like a real woman’s wardrobe rather than a fantasy runway version of that reality – there were autumnal corduroy separates worn with checked coats, floral printed maxi skirts paired with chunky roll-neck jumpers and double-breasted jackets, and ‘70s-spirited skirts worn with shearling jackets. But the best look to recreate: a zip-up denim boilersuit, worn over a navy Breton stripe turtleneck and finished with a checked blazer.

Michael Kors

Michael Kors’ AW20 collection was defined by an ‘escape to the country’ mood, with comfort high on Kors’ priorities list, but not at the sacrifice of polish or glamour. The looks were warming and wholesome – supersized smoke-grey heritage jumpers layered over shimmering metallic pleats, checked scarves worn as outerwear and quilted cashmere sweatshirts. Capes appeared in copious quantities on the runways, so look to Kaia Gerber’s sleek barley-coloured cape worn with a sunset orange turtleneck sweater dress and over-the-knee suede boots for a look that channels a certain countryside comfort.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has always had a sensibility for building wardrobes and creating clothes that women actually want to wear, rendered with an elegant simplicity accessible to all women. From argyle knits to tweed overcoats worn with culottes, each ensemble was styled to offer a simple styling template for getting dressed. Imbedded at once with playfulness and practicality, a standout look featured a shetland sweater in a joyful shade of egg-yolk yellow layered over a blue-and-white stripe button-down shirt and paired with a miniature-spotted mini skirt – with pockets for extra functionality.

Alberta Ferretti

There’s something satisfyingly put-together-looking about dressing head-to-toe in various hues on the spectrum of a single colour palette. At Alberta Ferretti’s show in Milan, there was plenty of colour-blocking in the form of powerful and practical daywear looks infused with an assertive confidence. Take this candy-coloured purple ensemble, where undulating plissé ruffles adorned with a chunky gold chain choker peeked out from the collar of a chunky rib-knit in a shade of deep violet. Capacious ‘80s-silhouette harem pants were cinched at the waist and tucked into lavender-coloured suede slouchy boots – ubiquitous on the catwalks last autumn, high-knee boots are set to remain a wardrobe mainstay for 2020.

Prada

Ever dreamt of wearing your pyjamas to a party? Well, now you can since the look is Miuccia Prada-approved. Prada’s AW20 collection reimagined the suit as elegant silk pyjamas delicately printed with waterlily motifs, peppered with barely-there tasselled heels and a gold logo-embellished headband, offering a take on menswear silhouettes injected with a feminine freshness and glamour.

Chloé

In her three years at the helm of Chloé, Natacha Ramsay-Levi has consistently grounded the Parisian fashion house’s contribution to fashion in strategically and elegantly executed wearability, woven with an unmistakable ‘70s-bohemian charm. A thigh-high split denim maxi skirt was paired with a rolled-sleeve v-neck cardigan, layered over a buttery checked blouse and finished with seamlessly incorporated Rita Ackermann patches, for a look that exuded a comfortable confidence and ease. Another iteration came in a creamy button-down midi skirt and Fairisle knit combination, once again decorated with ankle socks and brogue-style shoes.

Should you find yourself somewhat dazzled by but lost within what sometimes feels like the dream-like, parallel universe that is the world of designer fashion, these looks might just bring you back to earth and inject a fresh dose of joy into winter dressing.

Hedi Slimane’s AW19 runway at Celine unveiled a collection that transcended the lines between the controversial ‘new Celine’ signalled by Phoebe Philo’s successor, and ‘old Celine’, embodied by an archetypal French bourgeois dressing.

There is only one thing I seem to want to buy this season. The pieces I’m drawn to in shops, the pieces that stand out to me in magazines, the pieces I’m inclined to compliment at the office, all seem to have one thing in common: checks.

My current eye for checked attire undoubtedly traces back to earlier this year, to March 1st to be precise, when Hedi Slimane’s AW19 runway at Celine unveiled a collection that transcended the lines between the controversial ‘new Celine’ signalled by Phoebe Philo’s successor, and ‘old Celine’, embodied by an archetypal French bourgeois dressing.

An overwhelming feeling of ‘too much fashion’ swept the recent SS20 runways in New York London, Paris and Milan, the pressing issue of sustainability and the questions arising linked to fashion’s detrimental ecological impact giving rise to a wave of streamlined collections of non-trends and versatile wardrobe staples. Slimane’s return to Celine’s non-fashion origins back in spring seemed to be in some ways a reflection of this same message, at once an homage to the quintessential French bourgeois woman’s wardrobe and an appreciation of timeless staple pieces embedded with a glamorous yet wonderfully wearable allure. And no less than 18 of the looks that graced the runway featured some form of tweed or check-patterned clothing, the majority of them essentially a slightly differentiated take on a singular uniform built upon a foundation of a country-check pleated midi skirt, accessorised with printed silk foulards, glossy knee-high boots and horse-bit belts.

The beauty of trends and prints from previous decades making a comeback is that you don’t need to buy or consume anything new to wear them. You’ll find a plethora of checked blazers and skirts in charity shops and vintage stores

The seventies Parisian bourgeois-meets-British countryside aesthetic renaissance headed by Celine also swept the AW19 catwalks at Tory Burch, Chloé and Max Mara. Its ubiquity on the runways and consequent pervasion into high street stores arguably makes checked clothing a trend, but its pulling power lies in its nostalgic history – an ode to a time before trends became the swift one-in, one-out cycle that they are today, – as a timeless classic that works season after season. It slides perfectly into the broader 70s revival alongside conventional country-inspired accessories among the likes of equestrian-style boots and belts, vintage-luxe-inspired gold chain jewellery and classic tailoring.

The beauty of trends and prints from previous decades making a comeback is that you don’t need to buy or consume anything new to wear them. You’ll find a plethora of checked blazers and skirts in charity shops and vintage stores – my work colleague found a £6 vintage St Michael’s (Marks and Spencer’s old clothing brand) tweed blazer that I’m insanely jealous of in a charity shop, while I invested in a second-hand Miu Miu checked A-line skirt in a resale store in Paris.

Some of the trends we see on the runways can seem too unwearable, too niche or too out of reach for the everyday, but checks are an ode to the quotidien, the perfect source of office-dressing inspiration. A checked overcoat or blazer with gold toggle hardware is the perfect subtle yet trendy addition to a monochrome office ensemble, paired with polished pearls and loafers that look as if they’ve been plucked from a Parisian boutique. A tweed skirt with an over-the-knee hemline works wonders with a satin blouse, silk scarf and a pair of mid-heels. Warm and neutral colour palettes, dominated by brown and beige hues, mean they fit effortlessly into winter- and workwear-wardrobes that, even if they seem to be having a particular moment right now, never tire year after year.
