The BFC Fashion Forum podcast aims to use season 5 to impart knowledge and give the opportunity to explore topics that are affecting the creative industries and future of the fashion industry. On the first day, 7^th June, the BFC will take over the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) with a triple-threat of guest curators aimed to create a cultural programme of events that will celebrate three of the cultures that have made a rich and significant contribution to the British fashion industry. LFW40 will be centred around and informed by three cultures this year: Black culture concentrating on self-love; South Asian culture focusing on pattern, textile, and craftsmanship; and queer culture spotlighting young creative voices from the trans community. British brands and designers will aim to tell the stories of the communities within these cultures, with LFW40 providing a platform for the members of those communities to tell personal stories and give perspectives on what their culture means to them.

The programme of curated cultural events will consist of a myriad of activities including three events by special guest curators:

• Afternoon “T” – “You make this place beautiful” hosted by poet, model, consultant, and visibility activist Kai-Isaiah Jamal
• Conversations: A dinner celebrating South Asian impact on British fashion hosted by writer and creative, Simran Randhawa
• Sound & Harmony: Spotlighting Black artists hosted by award winning radio and television broadcaster, Clara Amfo.

As well as a celebration of culture, the weekend also marks the 40^th anniversary of LFW June. The BFC will celebrate the breadth of British menswear with a ’40 for 40’ programme in honour of LFW40. From Savile Row to sportswear, the event will consist of catwalk shows, presentations, and events that will provide designers and their brands with a powerful activation space allowing them to showcase their talents in menswear creation.

In addition, 1664 Blanc will host an activation titled ‘Explorations in Blue’ which entails four exclusive panels discussing key issues that face the industry with experts including Charles Jeffrey, Munroe Bergdorf, and Rejina Pyo. The British Fashion Council (BFC) is delighted to release the provisional schedule for London Fashion Week (LFW) February 2024 as it celebrates the event’s 40th anniversary. Taking place from Friday 16th to Tuesday 20th February, the schedule is a digital-physical hybrid. LFW40 will spotlight London’s unique creative communities and its position as a world leading cultural capital.

The BFC is pleased to announce that from 2024 fur is banned from the LFW schedule. The requirement was implemented for the 2024 application process. The schedule features both menswear and womenswear designers, with highlights including iconic British luxury brand Burberry, as well as 16Arlington, Alhuwalia, DAVID KOMA, Dilara Findikoglu, dunhill, Emilia Wickstead, ERDEM, Eudon Choi, FASHION EAST, JW Anderson, KNWLS, Marques’Almeida, Molly Goddard, Richard Quinn, ROKSANDA, and Simone Rocha.

This season, the BFC NEWGEN Show Space will return to The Old Selfridges Hotel, thanks to the generous support of Selfridges. Diet Coke has been announced as the Principal Partner for The British Fashion Council’s (BFC) Fashion Awards 2022. Diet Coke will therefore work closely with the British Fashion Council to ensure The Fashion Awards provide a captivating event which can be viewed by fashion lovers around the globe. The awards will showcase talent in the fashion industry and demonstrate fashion’s entwining role with British Culture. BFC Chief Executive, Caroline Rush states they look forward to their partnership together and to “celebrate all the exceptional individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to the global fashion community this year”. We suspect BFC and Diet Coke will be a match made in heaven.

Diet Coke is no stranger to the fashion scene, as they recently partnered with London Fashion Week (LFW) which saw the launch of their ‘Love What You Love’ campaign. The campaign focused on staying true to yourself and self-expression, both of which can describe LFW’s core values. The appointment of fashion legend, Kate Moss, as Creative Director also suggests Diet Coke are planting their roots firmly in the fashion world with no plans to uproot. Omar Sadiq-Baig, Senior Brand Manager at The Coca-Cola Company, supports our thoughts as he states, “Diet Coke has become synonymous with the fashion industry”. Therefore, this partnership is furthering Diet Coke’s spot within the fashion world, and we are excited about their future involvement in fashion. This year has also been a significant year for the brand as they have recently celebrated their 40^th birthday!

The Fashion Awards 2022, which will be presented on Monday the 5^th of December will provide worldwide streaming, custom-made content and an amplified platform, all of which will celebrate the opportunities fashion can provide. Other awards set to be included are the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator and Outstanding Achievement Award. For his work empowering youth through creativity and creating countless opportunities for next generation creatives, Jefferson Hack will receive a Special Recognition Award for Cultural Curation. In addition to this, as part of the NEW WAVE: Creatives program, 50 of the most innovative and inspiring young creative talent from around the world will also be recognised at the event.  

The Fashion Awards raises funds for the BFC Foundation (Registered Charity Number: 1185152) which lead to support growth and success for the future of the British Fashion Industry by focusing on Talent, Education, grant-giving, business mentoring and aims to improve both opportunity and equality within the fashion industry to keep it diverse and open to all, helping talented designers at all stages of their career from school level through to becoming a global fashion brand. In the financial year 2021/2022 alone, the BFC awarded over £1.3m in funds to designers and scholars.

The lucky 50 announced will be celebrated on Monday the 5th of December at The Royal Albert Hall in London for The Fashion Awards 2022. As one of the most anticipated moments in our annual fashion calenders, The Fashion awards will be a moment to celebrate the role of fashion in escapism, optimism, self-expression and fashion’s intersection with culture as a whole. It will also be a great opportunity for the fashion community to come together to acknowledge and commemorate those leading the charge for positive change within the industry.

This year also happens to mark the 5th year anniversary of the NEW WAVE: Creatives program, which offers the fashion community an opportunity to look back at the impact of the initiative in offering a platform to accelerate the careers of talented creatives and drive creativity forward.

BFC’s Chief executive, Caroline Rush, commented on the announcement: “This year’s NEW WAVE: Creatives are a phenomenal group of rising stars in the industry who represent the future of creativity in fashion. Over the last five years, the initiative has offered a platform to creatives from around the world to accelerate their careers and push culture and creativity forward. In 2022 we take a moment to mark five years of NEW WAVE: Creatives by looking back on the legacy as well as looking ahead to the future of our industry.”

The finalised list is an excellent resource for the global fashion industry as a whole, highlighting not only London’s position as a global hub of creativity but also the incredible success of both homegrown and international talent – all whilst celebrating those who play such a crucial role in the industry cultural reputation. Those picked as part of the NEW WAVE: Creatives will benefit from a sustainable, dedicated communications campaign including global PR, social media support across BFC’s channels for a year, and a purpose-built portal on The Fashion Awards website functioning as a great industry resource to facilitate the recruitment of truly exceptional talent.

The voting for this year’s picks began in June, with the previous NEW WAVE: Creatives directly influencing the outcome for 2022. The BFC’s mission is to strengthen British fashion globally as a leader in responsible creative businesses. A key element of the BFC’s strategy is partnering on this fund, to further enable a vibrant business ecosystem in the fashion sector, providing access to finance for seed, early stage, or growth stage for a broad range of businesses.

The Investment Fund was a key recommendation following an Investors Roundtable co-hosted by the BFC and Sian Westerman, BFC Non-Executive Director, in 2019. The roundtable concluded that multiple funding models exist for different types of businesses, and that there are many opportunities to develop businesses who are at the intersection of creativity, innovation and commerce.

“Highly creative businesses should not necessarily be pushed to high growth but can benefit from talent identification schemes and programmes”.

The Fund marries the BFC’s network, unique convening power and ability to engage with leading creative talent with Venrex’s long-standing track record in identifying winning businesses. The BFC will use the fees received to further invest in fashion education and talent programmes.

Commenting on The Investment Fund, Sian Westerman, BFC Non-Executive Director said:

 “The Venrex BFC Fashion I recognises the importance for fashion start-ups who are at the intersection of creativity, innovation and commerce to have access to capital and commercial expertise as well as much-needed support to allow their sustainable growth, build upon creative talent and bring to bear commercial expertise. It’s fantastic that the Fund will align with the BFC’s core mission to support talent in creating responsible creative businesses, with the goal to expand even more an already thriving fashion ecosystem.”

So far, Venrex BFC Fashion I has invested in three companies: Intimately, Vollebak and Digital Village.

Intimately is an adaptive intimates brand for disabled women. Intimately has redesigned bras, underwear, and sleepwear with the newest fastening technology to ensure those living with disabilities can easily get dressed. The brand doesn’t sacrifice fashion for function, believing everyone deserves to feel confident in stylish intimates designed for them.

Vollebak is building the future of clothing, using science and technology to tackle the most important challenges of our time – from climate change and sustainability, to space travel and disease resistance. Already 2x winners of TIME Best Inventions, their clothing includes Solar charged Jackets that store and re-emit sunlight, t-shirts that turn into worm food, hoodies designed to outlive the owner, and the first gear for Mars.

The Digital Village MMO Metaverse (DV) is redefining the construct of society and how we interact with the internet as a community.
