]]> We’ve all seen the Blokecore aesthetic that has been taking over fashion TikTok for some months now, but today we give you ‘Blokette.’ A term coined by the podcast Nymphet Alumni, the latest trend to surface combines the dress sense of your average British male with the hyper-feminine Coquette trend, and we are already seeing its impact on the fashion world.

Blokecore

Blokecore ultimately channels the aesthetic of stereotypical British male culture, think football t-shirts, baggy jeans and Adidas trainers, and has been extremely popular online since earlier this summer. The posterchild for this trend is 90’s Damon Albarn but you can gather inspiration as easily as seeing the outfits worn by football fans at matches. The best thing about this trend is that, despite what the name might suggest, it is not limited by gender. The Blokecore aesthetic has been adopted and perfectly executed by all gender identities, taking what was once a stereotypically masculine look and making it an inclusive fashion trend.

Coquette

Coquette is quite the opposite of Blokecore. Favouring the hyper-feminine, the Coquette trend is all about lace, frills and ribbons. The pastel pinks and bows work to channel the ultimate stereotype of femininity, something that is often mocked within society, as an attempt to reclaim girliness.

Blokette

Now this is where things get interesting, Blokette combines these opposing aesthetics to create visually interesting looks that play with the constructs of gender. You might see a football shirt paired with leg warmers and hair ribbons, or a zipped sports top with a long skirt and Adidas Sambas. Stars such as Bella Hadid and Enya Umanzor have been popularising this look as they play with notions of gendered dressing, accentuating both masculinity and femininity in their outfits.

Wales Bonner

It can be argued that a large inspiration behind this trend is British design house Wales Bonner. Wales Bonner has been reinventing athleisure within the world of high fashion for many years now, with their SS21 and AW21 collection proving particularly relevant within the Bloke and Blokette aesthetics. On top of this is the widely successful Adidas x Wales Bonner collaboration that celebrates the resurgence of vintage inspired sportswear.

Adidas Sambas

Already the ‘it’ shoe of the moment, the Blokette trend is yet another win for the Adidas Samba. The ultimate ‘dad’ trainer has been reinvented in these past seasons becoming Gen Z’s most wanted shoe of the year, especially the coveted Adidas x Wales Bonner collaboration.

Miu Miu Ballet Flats

On the opposite end of the Blokette spectrum lives the other shoe of the year, the Miu Miu Ballerinas. These shoes may have been controversial at first as many despaired over the return of the ballet flat, but they have quickly won everyone over. Pair these with a baggy football kit and knee-high socks and you have perfected the Blokette look.

Hair Ribbons

Hair ribbons are potentially the hair accessory of the year and it’s only January. The likes of Alexa Chung and Hailey Bieber have already been seen sporting variations of this hair look, proving it is only going to get more popular. Hair ribbons tie into the overtly feminine side of Blokette and are a simple and easy way to add femininity back into your look.

Leg Warmers and High Socks

Leg warmers and high socks are a really interesting aspect of this trend as they still stick to the themes of athleisure and sportswear found in Blokecore but they do so in a hyper-feminine way. The use of leg warmers recentres traditionally feminine modes of sport such as ballet and dance and works perfectly to reclaim girliness in the sports realm where female dominated activities are often taken less seriously.

Ultimately, Blokette plays with the notions of masculinity and femininity in the world of athleisure and sports culture. The juxtaposing ideas of Blokecore and Coquette create looks that are multidimensional and interesting on the eye. Potentially the most exciting aspect of Blokette is that it can be done in so many different ways, you could dress in a primarily feminine way and add masculine accents or vice versa. Playing with Blockette-core is truly a beautiful game.

]]> We love seeing more size-inclusive brands emerge as well as pre-existing brands become more diverse by developing a broader range of clothing sizes. We are strong believers in normalising and celebrating different body shapes in mass-market fashion, which is easily available to all. Trust us, we know there is still a lot of work to be done in achieving this dream of ours, however, we are pleased with the progress we are seeing. 

We have selected fourteen brands which are leading the body positivity movement. They are showing style does not have to be compromised when producing a wide range of sizes. Watch out for these brands in 2023 as we believe they will continue to create positivity, inclusion and sick fashion.

Ester Manas

No surprise that Ester Manas is on our top 14 fashion-forward size-inclusive brands list. If you are unfamiliar with their designs, once you take a look, you will soon have a new obsession. Their use of sheer materials, asymmetrical designs and abstract cuts are hard not to get excited about. 

Yitty

Lizzo’s fashion brand, Yitty, is described as shapewear reinvented. As we all know, the style icon and award winner would never sacrifice her passion for fashion and her brand, Yitty, is proof. Sizing varying between a UK 8-36, means Lizzo’s brand accommodates for a vast range of body types. Alongside shapewear, the satin pyjamas, robes and underwear are all sexy and stylish- good job Lizzo. Amazingly, the Yitty style quiz offered on the site also helps cater to your style preference and clothing needs. 

Isolated Heroes

Scottish self-start up brand Isolated Heroes not only places emphasis on sustainability, but also size-inclusivity. Offering sizes up to a UK 28, the fashion brand creates glamorous evening attire and head-turning designs. If you are a fan of sequins, they will become a core brand for your 2023 looks. 

Alpine Butterfly Swim

It is never too early to get your holiday swimwear bought, and after seeing these pieces you will not be able to resist. Alpine Butterfly Swim create luxury swimwear which we are in love with and there’s no surprise as to why. With incredible collections inspired by space, 90s supermodels and psychedelics, there are designs to suit everyone.  

Good American

Of course, Good American features. Brand values of body diversity and size representation, means Good American stocks sizes from UK 2- 28. The brand is super inclusive and is great for finding basic fashion staples as well as one-off pieces. Known for their well-fitted denim, Good American will not let you down in regards to trendy, inclusive styles. 

Miaou

A French brand inspired by the coastline of California, what’s not to love? Miaou’s purpose was to create clothing to feel good in and they certainly have achieved their goal. The ‘perfect fit’ inspired the designs and allowed the brand to expand on its sizing to cater to more consumers. Specialising in corsetry, Miaou, will have an endless collection for you to find your perfect style, and of course, perfect fit. 

Savage X Fenty

Rihanna’s successful lingerie brand is sure to meet anyone’s underwear needs. Not only will you find an incredible selection of lacy and sexy lingerie sets, but also super comfy lounge and pyjama sets. Or maybe you are looking for a workout set? Guess what, they have that too. You can’t go wrong with a Savage x Fenty exploration. 

Karoline Vitto

A brand which captures the true essence of size-inclusion. Karoline Vitto’s designs are contemporary and high fashion. Based in London but Brazilian born, she focuses on female form in unconventional manners and this is evident through her designs. Women’s curves and folds are a central motif for her garment design process, and therefore, size, is a literal inspiration for her. Designs are available in a UK 8- 28. 

Skims

Skims clothing comes in a wide range of sizes at very affordable prices. Their ‘fits everybody’ collection highlights their brand focus on creating clothes for as many body sizes as possible. Love. Stretchy underwear and technically constructed shapewear are popular designs from the brand as they try to innovate the fashion industry, providing solutions for women who feel they are not properly being catered to. 

Chopova Lowena

If you are a Dua Lipa fan, you will probably be aware that she is a fan of Chopova Lowena. Their hybrid designs are produced through mixed inspirations of Bulgarian folklore and 1980’s rock climbing. Two very different worlds coming together to produce a state of high fashion. Colour and pattern are very central to their expression of their influence.

GIA/irl

Elegant and classic designs are available in sizes UK 10-28 from brand GIA/irl. The beautiful gowns come in satins and stretchy linens to create captivating comfort. GIA/irl also offers styling tips with each of their products which is super helpful if you need a little advice. 

Blueki

Created in New York by model Yumi Nu, Blueki, was created to promote size-inclusive fashion. Representing different shapes and sizes is hugely important to the brand and we are therefore very happy to feature the brand on our list. As a new brand they are doing super well and we believe their success will only continue to grow.

Fashion East

Fashion East is synonymous with looking cool. The non-profit offers upcoming designers’ opportunities to showcase their designs and celebrate body positivity. Ahead of the times, they showcase new and captivating designs which are eye-catching and hard to miss. Maybe not for everyone, but it’s definitely for us. If innovative fashion is up your street, Fashion East is a NPO you should get familiar with.

Designers such as Karoline Vitto are currently working with the NPO, however, previous designers include Gareth Wrighton and Nensi Dojaka.
