With the BRIT Awards’ official Instagram apprehensively teasing our excitement these last few months by slowly releasing nominees and performances; we can only be buzzed that we can now toss our opinions into the pot. We sure know who we’ll be using our votes on, who will you be voting for this year?

The 2023 BRIT Awards aim to celebrate the best British musical achievements of the previous year in categories including Song of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best New Artist. Additionally, this year, control has been handed over to the music fanatics of our generation with four public determined award-winning genre-specific categories:

• Best Rock/Alternative Act
• Best Pop/R&B Act
• Best Dance Act
• Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act
  

The nominees have been public knowledge since January 12th, but just in case you
managed to miss the online debuts, here are all of the artists up for nomination this February.

Best Rock/ Alternative Act

The nominees for Best Rock/Alternative Act promoted by Absolute Radio include none other than The 1975, whose UK leg of their At Their Very Best tour is a meta visionary of performative prodigy and is well underway this January – taking TikTok and the nations’ beanie-wearing-menthol-smoking-indie-aficiandos by storm.

Five-time BRIT Award-winning band, Arctic Monkeys, who are set to embark on their UK and Ireland 2023 tour this May with new album, The Car, due to release on the 21st of October.

Illustrious rock duo to introduce Rock/Alternative category to the MOBO Awards in 2020, The Nova Twins. Consisting of innovative, progressive and creative minded Amy Love and Georgia South and the real audacious charmingly easy-going Tom Grennan with tunes to sedate the indie-pop craving we know we have.

And Wet Leg who have recently catapulted into fame with an insurgence of musical familiarity on TikTok.

Best Pop/ R&B Act

As promoted by Capital radio, the nominees for Best Pop/R&B Act are gospel/pop artist Cat Burns who rose to prominence with her 2020 single ‘Go’, which gained popularity last year due to its involvement with a social media video trend.

Prolific pop personality Charli XCX who recently guest performed for The 1975 at their Manchester show earlier this January, cultivating laudatory fan-uproar and is set to perform in this Aprils’ Coachella festival.

One of 2022’s female artists of note, Dua Lipa, is nominated for the category as a repeat generator of dance-worthy tunes.

Love on Tour took audiences by storm last year with none other than the positively ostentatious, Harry Styles, taking to the stage on his vivaciously ornate world-tour, deeming him nomination worthy.

Finally, Sam Smith takes the stage as an emotive conveyor of lyrical expression in this year’s category.

Best Dance Act

The nominees for Best Dance Act promoted by KISS FM are the unrivalled Voice UK semi-finalist, Becky Hill, with her wicked lyrical talents.

DJ Simon Green, better known as Bonobo – entering an upbeat exploration of jazz and world music.

The unparalleled, Calvin Harris, is without a doubt a contender for this year’s Best Dance Act with his paramount talents within the field.

Confirmed festival English DJ, Eliza Rose, is a standout for this category with her social media pertinence on TikTok as a curator of trend-worthy beats.

Finally for this category, with his recent rise to congruity within the scene, Fred again.. – taught by germane ambient music contributor Brain Eno – has certainly learnt his place within the folds.

Best Hip Hop/ Grime/ Rap Act

As promoted by Capital Xtra the nominees for Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act 2023 are as follows with his solo breakthrough tune ‘Straight Rhymez’, harbouring over 26 million views, 24-year-old rapper, Aitch, has caught our eye.

Carrying on with an alphabetical motif we also bring Central Cee to the table as a contender because of his rise in interest this recent year following his single ‘Doja’.

Another nominee of note would be social-conscious rapper and lyrical genius, Dave, who took the UK by storm when he headlined Reading and Leeds Festival as the youngest-ever solo headliner, at just 24-years old.

2018 BRIT nominee, Loyle Carter, has been reinstated this year as an option for the public vote, with his 2022 album hugo proving to elicit a vibe unmatched.

We end our nominees on none other than Kingstons’ own, Stormzy, with controversial lyrics of British pertinence (shout out to Boris) and a November album release, it only makes sense that we see him on our screens this February for the BRITs.

This illustrative display of musical contesting will air on Saturday 11th February. So make sure to tune in to see if your votes made a difference.

Nominations for the 2023 BRIT awards were announced on Thursday 12^th January with some of our favourite artists, such as Wet Leg, Rina Sawayama, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and Dua Lipa, all up for awards. However, many music fans and artists alike were disappointed and puzzled that the nominations in the Artist of the Year category included only male artists. Here’s the lowdown on all the deets you need to know and our take on the failures of the award show.  

Back in 2021, the BRITS removed the gender limitations from their awards replacing them with ‘best artist’ in response to the complaints that non-binary singer Sam Smith was not eligible to win the award because of their gender. Although the BRITs had appeared to change for the better to allow more inclusivity the awards have struck up controversy this year by having not a single female or non-binary artist nominated for the Artist of the Year. To qualify for the award, an artist must have one Top 40 album or two Top 20 singles from the period of the 10^th December 2021 to the 9^th December 2022. This means that hyperpop sensation Charli XCX, the ethereal Florence + the Machine, shinning electro artist Shygirl, indie singer Beabadoobee, dance royalty Becky Hill, and alt-pop hero Rina Sawayama, were all eligible for the award but were absurdly overlooked. A spokesperson for the awards said, “While it’s disappointing there are no [female artist] nominations in the Artist of the Year category, we also have to recognise that 2022 saw fewer high-profile women artists in cycle with major releases as was the case in 2021”. Out of the 70 artists that were eligible for the prize only 12 were female – a very concerningly low figure. We think it’s not good enough – the industry needs to reform to allow more space for non-binary and female artists.

The BRIT awards will be held on Saturday 11^th February at the O2 Arena in London (marking the first ever weekend the awards have been hosted on) and be broadcasted on ITV1 and ITVX at 8 pm GMT. Hosting for the second year in a row will be British stand-up comedian Mo Gilligan who revealed he’d be donating his fee for the night to Five X More, a charity whose aim is to improve Black women and birthing people’s maternal health outcomes in the UK.

The show will feature live performances from huge names such as Harry Styles, Wet Leg, Sam Smith, and Kim Petras. Harry Styles and Wet Leg both tie for the most nominations with an impressive four each.

The winners of the 12 different categories, celebrating Best New Artist to Song of the Year, will be announced on the night. This year’s winner of the Rising Stars Award has already been announced with our favourite new girl group FLO taking home the prize. FLO makes history as the first group to ever win the award. They said that winning is, “truly a dream come true. We feel so empowered creating the music we love and we hope others feel that too.”. Previously winners of the award have gone on to be household names such as Florence + The Machine, Sam Smith, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, and Jorja Smith.

In 1977 the first BRIT awards were and in 1982 the awards originated as an annual event. Over the years the BRITs have been responsible for some iconic moments in pop culture including the final public appearance of Freddie Mercury, Jarvis Cocker protesting Michael Jackson’s Christ-like attitude by showing his rear end, televising the feud between Blur and Oasis, and of course Spice Girl’s Gerri Halliwell’s famous Union Jack dress. The ceremony once was infamous for hosting surprising antics and presenting the public with a sneak peek into the chaos of British celebdom for an evening. Now the awards have been criticised as having lost its edge as The Independent said it, “evolved into a more polished, sanitised affair”.

The nominees for this year were announced back in November 2022 but just in case you missed them here are some of our favourite artists who are up for a prize.

The nominations for Record of the Year in the general field (that recognises the producers, sound engineers, and sound mixers as well as the performing artist) includes Sweden’s pop icons ABBA’s ‘Don’t Shut Me Down’, 28 time Grammy winner “Queen Bee” Beyoncé’s ‘Break My Soul’, the nation’s favourite soul singer Adele’s ‘Easy On Me’, the oh-so bad Doja Cat’s ‘Woman’, indie hero Steve Lacy’s ‘Bad Habit’, our favourite rapper Kendrick Lamar’s ‘The Heart Part 5’, diva Lizzo’s ‘About Damn Time’, and teen girl heartthrob Harry Style’s ‘As It Was’.

Up for awards in the Song of the Year category are the tracks by Adele, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, and Kendrick Lamar nominated for Record of the Year as well as the infamous DJ Khaled’s ‘God Did’ featuring Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, John Legend & Fridayy, the singer-songwriter Taylor Swift’s short film ‘All Too Well’, and the artist that blew up TikTok Gayle’s ‘ABCDEFU’.

The albums nominated for the Album of the Year include: 30 by Adele, Voyage by ABBA, Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny, RENAISSANCE by Beyoncé, Mr Morale & The Big Stepper by Kendrick Lamar, Special by Lizzo, and Harry’s House by Harry Styles.

Among the artist nominated for best new artists is our fav cheeky indie band Wet Leg whose punk single ‘Chaise Long’ released on their eponymous debut album last year has gathered millions of streams. Brazilian Latin pop artist Anitta has also been nominated having risen to international fame over the last few years. Samara Joy, the 23-year-old American Jazz singer, is up for the award as well as having released her second album as a leading musician Linger Awhile last year. The Eurovision-famous Italian Glam rock band Måneskin who are about to drop their 3rd studio album Rush! Later this month, are among the nominees in the category too.

Fans of Drake and The Weeknd may be surprised to not see them nominated in a single category. Last year the Grammys ended its secret-committee nominations in the four main categories in the general field (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artists) following protests sparked by the 2021 Grammys when it was revealed the Weeknd’s hugely successful After Hours and single ‘Blinding Light’ did not receive a single nomination. The Weeknd and Drake continue to boycott the awards this year.

With any of our music idols – Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Bad Bunny, and Lizzo, to name a few – bound to come home with one or two prizes this year there’s no way you’ll want to miss out. Grab your popcorn, a little booze, and of course your besties ready for a watch party in style. The Grammys will broadcast on CBS Television Network at 8-11:30 ET and will be available on Paramount + for fellow UK viewers.
