If the purpose of the game is to give fashion a voice while making a statement when revealing a new collection, then we should consider Viktor & Rolf’s mission accomplished regarding their highly Instagrammable couture show that debuted in Paris on Wednesday.

The Dutch fashion house’s latest Spring/Summer 2019 haute couture collection managed to grab attendees’ attention with avant-garde dresses highlighting the show with a layer vastness made of rainbow-loud ruffles and tulles. The brand’s bold and theatrical designs graced the runway even though there was something more that got people talking – or should we say, reading.

Each dress was emblazoned with slogans taken out of the millennials’ everyday mottos. Recognisable phrases like “I want a better world” or even “Sorry I’m late. I didn’t want to come” were written in capital letters in the centre of the bright couture gowns, bringing to the show an uplifting but rather ironic kind of vibe.

Viktor & Rolf made a major statement using clever contradictions with offerings from ethereal want-to-be princess dresses stating “I am not shy I just don’t like you” to short but sweet gowns that simply had a large “NO” written in red letters. The design duo employed obvious and easy statements while leaving a comment about social media and the banality of perfection. We take a closer look at Viktor & Rolf’s literal genius mixture.
