]]> The decade that we have been dreading has found its way back into fashion, as we see Y2K begin to fall off the trend cycle, the 2010s feels like a natural progression. While this may be a horrifying prospect for many of you, we are actually seeing a lot of these trends already circulating and they are far from the galaxy prints and shutter shades that still haunt us to this day.

Neck Corsages

The ‘IT’ girls favourite necklace replacement; a neck corsage may seem like something you haven’t really seen before. But, if you ask us, this is 2023’s choker. The black ribbon choker had us in a literal chokehold in the 2010s, and they were worn everywhere; it did not matter whether you were going for a coffee or attending a red carpet, a choker was the perfect accessory no matter the occasion. Now we are seeing neck corsages fill this void. 

Asymmetric Skirts

Asymmetric skirts and dresses have had a makeover. While we are seeing stars such as Dua Lipa and Bia wear the style in their more traditional forms (proving that they are definitely back in style) we have also seen some of Gen Z’s favourite brands re-invent the look. Brands such as Fanci Club and I Am Gia have been popularising the style through ruffles, cinching and tassels, bringing a whole new perspective on the trend. These new styles have meant that the trend is almost unrecognisable, and its 2010s origin has been undetected by fashion girls across the world. Rather than the high-low styles with a dramatic slit, these designs play with asymmetry in fun new ways, our favourite being the tentacle-esque tulle tassels that we have been seeing everywhere at the moment.

Dresses Over Trousers

Now, we must apologise. We didn’t mean to give you a jump scare with this last trend, we know that you never thought you’d see this trend again after that Ashley Tisdale look from 2001. But we are here to tell you that it is in fact back, but it’s not quite as scary as those dark, dark times in the early 2000s. 

While this trend reached its peak in the 2000s, some celebrities and trendsetters were so fond of the look that they kept it going for as long as they could and manages to sustain it into the early 2010s. But now, it is back. We saw it rear its head at a variety of runway shows for 2023 and its safe to say the look is catching on. 

We may not be completely sold on this look just yet, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be going anywhere anytime soon, so we will have to learn to love it. Maybe when we get past the memory of Disney Channel red-carpets and pop-culture of the noughties, we will be able to appreciate it. One thing that did make this trend more palatable was Fendi’s monochromatic take on the look, this minimalised the busyness of the layering and gave it a much more intentional feel than the jumbled looks that we were used to seeing in the 2000s. This is the same styling that we saw Kicki Yang Zhang employ in her look, which makes the whole outfit appear seamless and co-ordinated. Brands have even started selling trousers with built-in skirts (or skirts with built-in trousers) proving that the new way of styling this trend is through co-ordination rather than the mis-matching patterns and textures of the 2000s. And, if you ask us, this is a much better way to approach this trend.

Slouchy Bags

We have been seeing the Bottega Veneta Jodie bag, and its contemporaries everywhere, the effortless look of this oversized, slouchy bag has been our latest accessory obsession. The bag has been seen on everyone including the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner and Matilda Djerf. This style of bag is a stark contrast to the miniature and highly structured bags, such as the Jacquemus Le Chiquito, that have been fashion’s favourites for the past few years.

However, this is not the first time that we have glorified a more relaxed style of bag, in the 2010s the Mulberry Alexa and the Balenciaga City Bag were some of our most beloved pieces. While the bags may have changed, the casual, slouchy style is rooted in the 2010s. In fact, the Mulberry Alexa, which originally launched in January 2010, was relaunched in November 2020 ahead of Mulberry’s 50th anniversary. So, we may even see a revival of this specific style coming soon.

Sheer Lace

It comes as no surprise that sheer lace is having a revival. We are seeing it everywhere at the moment, from formal wear for celebrities to the casual street-style looks of influencers, lace in inescapable. But this is not the first time that lace has dominated both formal and casual wear, in the 2010s we experienced a similar phenomenon. 

Formal lace moments including Kendall Jenner’s iconic Instagram post that saw her take the throne of most liked picture and Blake Lively’s Zuhair Murad gown in Season 4 of Gossip Girl had everybody under their thumbs. This saw lace pieces become everybody’s go-to for formal occasions, but, even then, lace wasn’t limited to eveningwear.

The 2010s saw the mass Coachella-fication of fashion. The desert festival was less about music and more of a dusty red-carpet for our best dressed celebrities. With this came a boho and lace obsessed generation, stars such as Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez championed these looks and the whole of the internet was in awe. This more casual approach to lace is being seen again at the moment, however, the lace is finer and brings in more Coquette-inspired elements than the boho-chic that we saw in the 2010s. One particular brand Bella Venice has been gaining popularity for its sheer lace dresses and co-ords that have been worn by celebrities from Mackenzie Ziegler to Matilda Djerf.

Double Denim

Double denim was all the rage in the 2000s; Britney Spears, Victoria Beckham, and Paris and Nicole all rocked fully denim outfits. Whilst the jeans and jacket combo might be a bit hot for festival season, Kali Uchis rocks a denim corset top with a low-rise mini skirt and denim boots. Trade the denim boots for wellies, and you have yourself a very 2000s festival outfit!

Belts

Belt choices in the early 2000s were questionable to say the least. Bohemian ‘disc’ belts, low-rise belts that served no purpose, oversized waistband belts, and sequin scarf belts all had their moments. Bizarre belts have been making a comeback recently too, with Miu Miu showcasing double-belted skirts, Diesel’s literal belt miniskirt, and Rina Sawayama wearing belts in lieu of tops on the cover of Nylon magazine and at the Brits afterparty. The possibilities are endless, as Sita proves, layering a variety of styles to create this very risky belt dress.

Wellington Boots

Speaking of wellies, Kate Moss has proven to us time and time again that the boot your parents probably made you wear as a child does not have to be shunned. Whether pairing Hunter wellies with short-shorts and a waistcoat or a glittery dress and pointless belt, Kate embraces the harsh reality of a UK summer- clouds, rain, and mud everywhere!

Metallics

Metallic everything was huge in the 2000s, from blue and silver metallic eyeshadow, to metallic frosted lip gloss, to metallic mesh tops. This trend is definitely back, with influencers sporting metallic cowboy boots and Paco Rabanne’s coveted sequin skirt, while TikTokers apply gold and silver leaf to their favourite jeans. Metallic pieces are the perfect way to spice up a boring festival outfit!

Lace

Lace can be perfect for a festival because it is super lightweight and breathable. It adds detail to an outfit and can be layered (think: Blake Lively Kids’ Choice Awards 2005). Sheer lace skirts and lace-edge tank tops are cute and easy to find in shops, and lace gloves are also becoming more and more popular. Practical for a festival? Probably not, but cute.

Cut Out Tops

Cut-out tops are a piece that can be dressed up or down, but dressed all the way up is the way to go for a festival. Go classic y2k with a bedazzled butterfly top, or keep it cool with a white star top like Emma Leger. These summery tops would look great with any early 2000s festival accessory — long bohemian necklaces, gold shiny tattoos, or feathers in your hair!

Terry Cloth

Terry cloth will keep you dry as you dance all night! And is super comfy and breathable which is essential for a hot sweaty festival. A staple in any early 2000s wardrobe, from Juicy Couture terry tracksuits to beach cover-up dresses, terry cloth is both fashionable and functional. Sophie Suchan has styled this Chanel co-ord with layered chain belts and a matching Chanel purse. So simple but so classic.

Coach Monogram

The Coach monogram had 2000s teenagers in a chokehold. Everyone wanted the little monogrammed clutch as their going-out bag after it was spotted on the arms of celebrities like Ashley Benson, Paris Hilton, and Ashley Tisdale. The resurgence of the y2k aesthetic meant Coach relaunched their old styles, including the classic monogram in different colours and even denim. Elsa Hosk opted for an elevated classics look, posing by a vintage car in a monogrammed bikini top with matching jeans. The coordinated patterns make this simple look seem tied together and are perfect for wanting to look good without the high maintenance at a festival.

]]> Rihanna has been teasing us with a countdown of content for her Savage X Fenty show, which will be airing tomorrow, 24th of September, on Amazon Prime. As we eagerly await the arrival of Vol 3, we take a look at some of our favourite highlights from the previous two shows.

Breaking Boundaries

When Vol. 1 was first broadcast on the 20th of September 2019, women across the world finally felt seen by the fashion industry. Rihanna defied the usual style of catwalk lingerie shows, and instead catered towards the female gaze. Lingeries were worn by an incredible cast of diverse models, representing different shapes and sizes, races, genders, sexualities, and disabilities. “Every woman deserves to feel sexy. We are sexy, we are multi-faceted and I want women to embrace that to the fullest”, said Rihanna

This attitude was carried into Vol 2, and the show was even more inclusive and representative of diversity.

Keeping Up Appearances

An element of the Savage X Fenty show we have come to love is the variety of celebrity and model appearances we see throughout. In Vol. 1 we saw the likes of Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Joan Smalls. A standout modeling performance was when Cara was choreographed along with dancers wearing a green lace set.

We also saw brand ambassador, Normani, take the center stage in an amazing dance performance.

In Vol 2 the runway cast grew, adding Willow Smith, Lizzo, Indya Moore, Shea Coulé, Gigi Goode and Jaida Essence Hall into the mix. We loved the choreographed moment between Indya Moore, Demi Moore, Bella Hadid and Normani, as we watched the stage ooze with diversity and representation, and the cast wore gorgeous sultry sets.

More Than Just A Runway

In both Vol 1 and 2, we have seen world-class performers take to the stage and offer entertainment. We loved Rosalía’s sassy ‘Relación remix’ and TKN’ performance, in which she performed choreography alongside a diverse team of dancers modeling the Savage X Fenty menswear collection.

Another stand-out was Bad Bunny’s ‘Yo Perreo Sola’ performance, a song dedicated to any woman who likes to dance alone at the club.

Exploring Sexuality and Gender

With Rihanna’s inclusivity coming naturally to her, it’s no surprise that we have seen defiant representation for the LGBTQIA+ community so far in her shows. Vol 2 saw a sensational cameo from Pose’s Indya Moore, who identifies as transgender and non-binary.

We also saw show-stopping struts from Drag Race icons Shea Couleé, Gigi Goode.

What we can expect from Vol 3 ?

We’ve been glued to Riri’s Instagram for the past few weeks, seeing what we can gauge from the snippets she has been posting. Yesterday, she shared a video highlighting the event, showing us the personalities involved, clips of fast-paced choreo, and striking looks. Performers will include Daddy Yankee, Nas, BIA, Ricky Martin and Normani. We will also see star-studded appearances throughout the show from Bella Poarch, Emily Ratajkowski, Gigi Hadid, Jeremy Pope, Gottmik, Symone, Troye Sivan, Vanessa Hudgens, and many more.

We also saw show-stopping struts from Drag Race icons Shea Couleé, Gigi Goode.

Spring/Summer 2018 campaign

Tommy Hilfiger’s 90s Fly sneaker is back and better than ever. The Fly sneaker is making the ultimate comeback, originally debuting back in 1997 but now following the chunky Dad trainer trend we’ve been seeing everywhere. The capsule collection celebrates the brand’s sailing heritage with an on trend streetwear twist.

Christian Oita is the Photographer/filmmaker of this nostalgic campaign and we think that he did an incredible job of resonating with the 90s era but also bringing a fresh, urban take to appeal to the younger, fashion forward audience of Tommy Hilfiger.
