Pop sensation Miley Ray Cyrus practices self-love through work-out, swim, and dance in her new video for single ‘Flowers’. The video premiered on Friday 13^th of January and already has a hold on the world with it trending number one on YouTube for music and over 39M views.

The video starts with Miley strutting across a bridge in a pair of boxy black sunglasses and a vintage Yves Saint Laurent satin gold hooded top and skirt look that matches the LA sunset behind her. She pulls her bleach blonde locks up into a chic messy updo and shimmies her way up the hills to her decadent house where she strips down into lingerie and takes a dive into her pool displaying her adorable tats. As the chorus hits she works out in her garden showing her mental and physical strength as she completes rope workouts and bungee burpees with a triumphant snarl on her face. Miley then hops in the shower before rocking a sexy slim black suit with slicked-back wet hair as she walks through the clean white halls of her minimalism mansion. The song ends with the star dancing like there’s no tomorrow – it’s bound to make you want to join in too.

Director of the video is model, photographer, and filmmaker Jacob Bixenman, who has worked with Helmut Lang, Mark Ronson, Paco Rabanne, and Troye Sivan and in the past. He also worked with Miley on the Attention singles music videos last year.

There’s speculation amongst fans as to whether the lyrics in the song are a dig at the singer’s ex-husband Liam Hemsworth with whom Miley had an on-again off-again relationship. Fans online have pointed out that the single, in which Miley tells the world she can “love herself better”, dropped on Liam’s 33^rd birthday. Some fans have also theorised that the lyrics in the first verse of the song, “We were right til we weren’t/ Built a home and watched it burn”, are alluding to Miley and Liam’s home in Malibu that was destroyed by California wildfires in 2018. Finally, the lyrics in the chorus ‘Flowers’ are almost a direct response to Bruno Mars’ ‘When I was Your Man’, which details the regret at the deterioration of a relationship due to lack of care and consideration from the man. Ouch!

‘Flowers’ is the first single released from the multi-platinum-selling recording artist’s eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation which is set to release on the 10^th March this year. As evident from the video for ‘Flowers’, the album is Miley’s love letter to the city she lives in: Los Angeles. From the album’s title we can expect some pop hits that be ideal for our summer playlists.

It’s been quite a few months without the eerie and soft voice of Billie Eilish to reassure us during these difficult times, but now she’s back with her latest single ‘My Future’. The song, dropped last night, is the first hint at a possible upcoming studio album since her past releases ‘Everything I Wanted’ and the Bond movie theme song ‘No Time To Die’.

In ‘My Future’, Billie opens up about her relationships, deciding to walk away from them to put herself – and her future – first. Through her voice, she guides us through an introspective voyage, inviting us to fully commit to self-discovery.

Over a soothing and gentle rhythm, Billie quietly murmurs her love for this abstract presence – being the future itself – and sings about spending time alone to ‘get to know myself’. In the background, the sound of rain accompanies her voice as she sings, ‘Cause I, I’m in love, With my future, Can’t wait to meet her, And I, I’m in love, But not with anybody else, Just wanna get to know myself.’

Unlike the first half of the song, the second part starts off with a faster synth beat produced by her brother Finneas, where Billie’s sophisticated vocals blend together to create a smoother sound. Here, she sings: ‘I know supposedly I’m lonely now, Know I’m supposed to be unhappy, Without someone, But aren’t I someone?.’ The track ends just like it started: with a soft and calm tone, Billie utters ‘I’ll see you in a couple years’, moving away from her past relationships. In the equally meaningful animated music video, directed by Australian animator Andrew Onorato, Billie walks under the rain through a forest enlightened by the moonlight. After the beat breaks down, the skies clear and the forest brightens up with colours and blooming greenery, symbolising her hopeful future.

Billie shared with her fans an email where she revealed how she and Finneas came up with the track: “We wrote this at the very beginning of quarantine. It’s a song that’s really, really personal and special to me. When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at — hopeful, excited, and a crazy amount of self-reflection and self-growth. But recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what’s happening in the world now. I hope you can all find meaning in it for yourselves.”

In a later released podcast, Billie expressed her curiosity for the future and spread a message of hope to everyone affected by the pandemic: “We should have hope because there’s stuff to look forward to in the future.’ ‘I love the idea of not knowing what’s in my future and I love the idea that I’m going to meet someone, I’m gonna do something that’s gonna change my life,” she said.

‘My Future’ offers encouragement for those who are living this time in solitude or away from family members to focus on themselves and grow stronger. When one sense is lost, our brains get re-wired and put to work heightening our other senses. So, perhaps the absence of a boyfriend in my life is making me more receptive to the constant, relentless reminders of my relationship (or lack of) status. Or perhaps it’s the fact that we have finally surfaced after being smothered by Instagram feeds littered with pictures of smug-looking couples on their ‘cute lil Xmas weekend away XOX’; the constant and inescapable reminders of ‘boyfriend season’. Only to be thrust straight back into yet another one of the annual celebrations geared towards couples that us singletons are missing one key element to join in on yet are forced to endure.

It’s all getting a bit tedious, isn’t it? You literally can’t run to the shop for some milk for your morning cuppa’ without being smacked in the face with a ‘Dine in two for £10 this Valentines’ sign. You can’t even sit on your own in the comfort of your own home and innocently flick through TV channels without being bombarded with ‘Couples Come Dine With Me’, Married at first sight, First Dates, and now Love Island is back- GIVE ME STRENGTH!

Imagine a parallel universe. Each year, after the months of couples just about surviving ‘single season’, on February 14th all the sad people who are in relationships sit at home in front of the notebook and sob into their Doritos and tub of Ben and Jerry’s cookie dough, after sinking a £4 bottle of Echo Falls (far too specific to be made up, I know!). Whilst restaurants and bars are buzzing with single people ‘cheers’-ing to being with themselves for…their whole lives.

In light of this worryingly appealing parallel universe, and after years of being forced to live as a single person in an undeniably couple-orientated world, I’ve decided we need a revolution. This year it’s time we put the ‘I’ in Valentine’s day. Instead of commiserating over what we don’t have in our lives, put the financial benefits of being single to good use. Use the money you have saved by not having to buy the obligatory Christmas, birthday and Valentine’s day presents this year (and every other year) and treat yourself. Go and buy a boujee bottle of bubbly, a good book, run yourself a bath, turn your phone off and soak yourself in self-love (and really expensive bubble bath). Nothing screams ‘I love myself’ more than a 24-karat face mask; this Valentine’s day, celebrate what you have achieved in your life. By yourself, you can do whatever the hell you want, you are unstoppable; celebrate yourself.
