The Wednesday Addams Effect

Ever since the hit Netflix show Wednesday graced our screens at the end of 2022, pop culture has gone wild for anything Wednesday related. At the fashion weeks, we saw a resemblance in the make-up looks that were styled on the catwalk to the aesthetics seen on the Netflix show. 

In New York, Rodarte styled bold blocked eyeliner, like the eyeliner that celebs such as Julia Fox have been pictured rocking in recent months. The gothic glam look is one that is clearly sticking around as it continues to gain popularity. Rodarte paired their eyeliner art with black lipstick to finish off this goth glam look. They used Nars products to create these killer looks; so we recommend using the Nars Lipstick in shade Heroine Red. This lipstick has a matte finish so we also recommend adding gloss on top to create that wet look that the model styled. To top it off, we think that the Nars High-Pigment Longwear Eyeliner would be perfect for creating those daring eyes. 

In London, it was Bora Aksu, Chet Lo and Simone Rocha that were honouring the gothic glam on their catwalk debuts. Bora Aksu’s looks looked like they had just stepped off the set of Wednesday, with their black lips and minimal eye makeup. Simone Roger had a unique twist to her looks that simulated the gothic glam aesthetic by having bows on the cheeks of her models as part of an accessory. Chet Lo incorporated the gothic glam by styling black bows and bow-like hairstyles, alongside black creative eyeliner and dark lips. These looks from London are all abbreviations of the gothic glam make-up trend that we’re all so obsessed with right now. 

The beauty of the gothic glam trend is that the base makeup is very minimal; it honours natural-looking skin and therefore you do not need full coverage products on your face to create this look. Using a good moisturiser and primer with minimal concealer and maybe some highlighter would be enough makeup needed to create the dewy skin look. 

When it comes down to styling some of the gothic glam looks, black lips and bold black eyeliner are our go-to. The Elf Cosmetics Expert Liquid Eyeliner or the Mac Brushstroke Liner would be the perfect products to use if you were thinking about going for the bold eyeliner aesthetic. The Lottie London Glitter Fix Bomb Face and Body Adhesive is an ideal product to use if you fancy copying Simone Rocha’s Face bows and need some glue to attach them.

In Milan, Etro and GCDS emphasised a softer take on the gothic glam look. They focused more on styling subtle smokey eyes or simply rocking basic black eyeliner. Out of all the looks, these ones are the most wearable for day-to-day looks. The Simpsons mini eyeshadow palette by Revolution has a lovely selection of shimmery black eyeshadows that would look perfect for a black smokey eye. The Dior Mono Couleur Couture eyeshadow in shade Black Bow is a matte black eyeshadow that will give your eyes intense colour and be perfect for a dramatic and well pigmented smokey eye look.

Shades of Shimmer 

The next theme that we noticed in New York and London Fashion Week was the shimmery starlike aesthetic that included sparkles across the eyes in a range of different styles.

In New York, Thom Browne created a masterpiece of the planets in his design which continued within the make-up and hairstyle that were created for his models. One of his models styled an updo that resembled a planet-like shape and was dyed white to look translucent by nature. 

He continued the theme of translucent white across the eyes by creating a white block shape that resembled a sort of eye mask on the model’s face. On top of the white base, the model-styled glittery Silver Stars dotted around the cheekbones and by the eyebrows. This portrayed the stars in the sky and is one of the most creative looks that we saw on the runway. Thom also dressed the model in long curly white nails to finish off this incredible look. For this look, we recommend using a combination of white eye shadow, white concealer or white face paint to help build up a pigmented base that the model. 

Using either white concealer or white face paint as a base and adding in eye shadow on top means that you will have higher coverage and a smoother look to the make-up look and won’t have to use as much eye shadow to help build up pigment. The Cosmetics Camo Concealer in a white shade is a full coverage concealer that would be perfect as a base for this look. The Depixym Cosmetic Emulsion in shade Bright White is another alternative product that you can use to help build up a pigmented white base. This product is a multi-use cream that is suitable for your eyes, lips, and cheeks. It has a lovely matte finish and is super blendable, so it is perfect for this look. Once you have a pigmented base, you can then go in with a powdery eye shadow for that finishing touch to create that smokey, dusty finish. 

The Mac eyeshadow or the Creator Revolution SFX White Base Matte Powder are two eyeshadow options that would suit this look well. For the glittering stars, we recommend using glitter eyeliner to create the stars on your face. The OPV Beauty Metal and Glitter Liner is a super pigmented glitter eyeliner that has a water base so it won’t smudge. 

Altuzarra was also present at NYC Fashion Week and styled a goddess-like vision on the runway with gold eyeliner designs across the model’s eyes. This makeup look is a different sort of shimmer compared to the other look that we saw in NYC fashion week. The one by Altuzarra is enchanting and mystical as it resembles a sort of Aphrodite aesthetic. The Kiko gold liquid eyeliner or the Dior eyeliner in shade Gold and Pearly Bronze would be perfect for this enchanting look. 

At London fashion week Conner Rives had a shimmery blue eyeshadow look that also resembled a mystical siren gaze, that was extremely flattering on the model and one that we are obsessed with. The shimmery blue levels up this look, making it dressy and seductive. Victoria Beckham’s Lid Lustre eyeshadow matches the one that Conner Rives’ model styles closely and therefore would be perfect to use.  A liquid eyeshadow would also be a good option for this look to create the pigmented and shiny aesthetic that Conner has gone for. The Sephora Collection of Colourful Special Effect Liquid eye shadow it’s a perfect product to use if you want a wet glossy look to this glittery eyeshadow style.

Old Hollywood Glamour 

One thing about beauty and fashion is that classic looks will always be relevant. One of the most staple pieces that the beauty industry has ever come across is the iconic red lip. This look is timeless and over the years we have seen many alterations. 

In New York, Christian Siriano created one of the sexiest and most sophisticated looks that we have seen on the runways this year. His model styled a-line coat and an elegant hat that covered her upper face revealing only her pouty red lips. She looked just like old Hollywood, glamourous, sexy and alluring. She had next to nothing underneath her coat as the only pop of colour being seen were her sultry red lips. The Dior Rouge Refillable lipstick is a lovely velvety lipstick that has good pigment and is irresistibly alluring. Alternatively, the Nars Audacious lipstick is a lovely cherry red and looks fun as well as sexy. 

To achieve that perfect pout a trusted lip liner will be an asset. The NYX Professional Makeup Suede Matte Liner in the shade Spicy it’s a lovely, coloured lip liner that would accentuate your lips beautifully and be a perfect base colour for a variety of red lipsticks that you can place on top. 

In London, Roksanda Ilincic created an adaptation to the timeless red lipstick look. The lips on her model had a more burgundy base to them creating a modern spin on this timeless classic. Her lips were moodier and mature, perfect for a variety of settings that you may need to pop out a dramatic lip look. For this look, they used products from Isamaya Beauty so we recommend using the suede lip liner in shade outlaw to line your lips for this look alongside the NYX Professional Makeup Shout Loud Hydrating Satin in shade Opinionated.

Natural and Dewy

One theme that we saw across all three shows was the natural, dewy makeup look that sees minimal-to-no base makeup and a simple lip tint which allows natural features to shine through effortlessly. The key to this look is having a good skincare routine pattern down so that your skin looks hydrated and flawless.

In New York, Michael Kors and Proenza Schouler rocked very natural makeup looks with very minimal makeup on the models. When recreating natural makeup looks, we recommend using a trusted moisturiser, hyaluronic acid as a serum, a vitamin c serum and either a lip tint or lip balm on the lips. You’re going to want a very hydrating skincare routine so that your skin looks healthy and plump. We recommend using the Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream as this two-in-one formula will give moisture to your face as well as have the same activities that a serum would encourage. Therefore, using this product will allow you to add vitamin C to your routine which will help brighten your skin’s complexion. Swapping your lipstick or lip gloss for a skin tint or lip balm will keep your lips looking natural but the dash of colour will make your face look alive. The Benefit Benetint Rose-Tinted Lip and Cheeks Lip Tint is that a beautiful lip tint would be ideal if you’re wanting to keep a natural chic makeup look that appears effortless.

In London and Milan, similar looks were followed with designers such as Nensi Dojka, Ahluwalia and Blumarine all rocking very natural makeup looks. Their model’s skin was well moisturised and therefore appeared shiny and, in some places, highlighted thanks to the well-equipped skincare routine. To achieve that super glossy finish that we saw in London and Milan we recommend using the Glossier Futuredew Serum Hybrid or the Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Balm, which is a mix of a rich moisturiser and primer.

Alternative Pops of Colour

The final set of beauty looks that we fell in love with at the various fashion weeks was a group of looks that had alternative takes on adding colour to their model’s faces. These are some of the more creative styles that we saw on the runways and ones that would be ideal for party events or festivals in the spring and summer. 

In London, Chet Lo had a pop of colour on her model faces in the middle of their eyebrows and on the sides of their eyes that resembled an explosion of colour. Pink, green and purple were spotted, and it helped make the looks appear fun and quirky on the runway. The Beauty Bay Bright Matte 42 colour palette is an amazing palette that has extremely pigmented colours in a variety of shades and would be perfect for an explosion of colour on your face like the one seen on the Chet Lo runway.

In Milan, Prada blew us away with the alternative-coloured lashes they styled in a variety of shades, which brought an added spice to the model’s makeup looks which were very natural apart from their lashes. 

When recreating this look, using coloured mascara is your best bet. Barry M does a lovely purple mascara, Revolution does a volumized blue mascara and Dior does a captivating red. Colourful lashes are a fun and unique way to dress up any makeup look and make it seem super creative. If you are not sold on the coloured mascara, but you’re still after a product that can give you the looks seen on the Prada runway, why not try coloured false lashes instead? You can get individual lashes or sets of lashes to wear with a variety of colours. You can also use individual-coloured lashes mixed in with the black lash set for that dash of colour that you desire.

Fendi

Kim Jones’ striking new collection for Fendi celebrated femininity at its core with the help of a groovy disco soundtrack that reflected the mood of the looks superbly. Through an amalgamation of striking colours and monotone looks, and with each shimmery fabric and flattering cut, each design dominated the catwalk and empowered women every step of the way. It was a party not to be missed!

Del Core

It was florals galore at the Del Core display but that wasn’t all. From dramatic ruffles and
maximalist head pieces to draping trains and head to toe metallics, each design offered a sense
of fluidity and sensuality in line with the inspiration for the collection. Del Core couldn’t have done
much more to make for an extravagant SS22 debut.

Vivetta

With pinks, pastels, playful prints and a spot of ice skating, Vivetta’s digital presentation delivered from start to finish and we were not disappointed. With everything from fluffy sandals to jewel encrusted dresses, the show, titled ‘Moon Girls’, gave us a dreamy moonlit insight into the beautiful 60s inspired pieces the label has created for Spring/Summer.

Alberta Ferretti

It was all in the details for Alberta Ferretti’s Spring/Summer collection, which presented
contemporary, goddess-esque designs. Crochet and macramé were a prevalent theme running
throughout much of the collection, celebrating the handmade technique which has gained traction
over the past year and is set to be the style of the summer for 2022.

Jil Sander

Showcasing an array of dynamic jacket and trouser sets, the Jil Sander collection radiated power
through boxy silhouettes and statement tailoring. We were teased with colours and prints which
were expertly used to brighten up the collection in the most subtle of ways.

Roberto Cavalli

In a hard-to-miss spectacle of all things wild, Roberto Cavalli served up some major looks that donned head to toe animal print, tiger, cheetah, zebra – you name it! The ultra sexy display boasted floor length robes, cut-out minis and a cape style shirt which flung the face of a lion right into the audiences horizon. In true Cavalli style the collection was daring as ever.

Max Mara

Defined as a ‘bourgeoisie rebel’, the Max Mara SS22 show presented effortlessly cool two pieces, statement jackets, and elegant dresses. The brands signature set of neutral shades were rampant to begin with, but as the show progressed naturals and nudes were transformed into a sunny hue of oranges and yellows, alongside seaside-inspired stripes. The emphasis was on the bag this season, with a distinctive new style parading down the runway in a variation of colours, sizes and materials.

Emporio Armani

Presenting a fluid collection where both men’s and women’s designs overlapped, Emporio Armani’s Spring/Summer collection exuded that Metropolitan spirit that helped get the brand to where it is today. Successfully catering to the market of the youth, the brand gave us jackets, trousers, dresses and more, with each piece hanging so softly making for the ultimate ready to wear collection.

Blumarine

Nothing says Noughties quite like the full body explosion of sequins and glitter that we saw on the Blumarine catwalk. Serving us an array of ultra cool, Y2K inspired looks, the SS22 show had low rise denim, studded shades and sheer mesh baby tees, not to mention almost every look boasted a butterfly fluttering down the runway in one way, shape or form, think belts, body chains, earrings and bags. Paris Hilton called and she wants her wardrobe back!

MM6 Maison Margiela

The MM6 Maison Margiela SS22 debut was a rendezvous in celebration of life’s return back to normality. Revealing an extroverted checkerboard print plastered across the likes of denim jackets, trench coats and suits, the collection was not for the faint hearted. Quirky accessories topped off the looks and, keeping in line with the theme, we saw jester style collars and even a pair of yellow gloves resembling the Marigolds we used to wash up our dishes! As the bold and fulfilling show reached its climax there was truly nothing left to give. Checkmate!

GCDS

Fun and flamboyant was the name of the game for the GCDS exhibit. Fit for an island getaway, an array of wide brim hats, neon bikinis and floral embellished knits were among stars of the show. Platformed heels also had their moment, accessorised with exaggerated prints, sequins aplenty and oversized logos, making for a show stopping stomp around.

Prada

Prada never disappoints and this season was no different, a simultaneous display of their SS22
collection was shown in both Milan and Shanghai, celebrating the power of technology and
fashion’s ability to transcend borders. The show explored classics, blazers, leather jackets, mini
skirts and a whole lot of black. Though, when we were least expecting it, bursts of neon would
take over the runway. Alongside the classics, there were intricate details like boning, lace up and ribbonlike trains that danced across the catwalk floor.

Act No.1

In an artistic masterpiece by Act N°1, we got a taste of structured ball gowns, Rapunzel hair and cloud-like feathers. The collection came alive as models erupted from their outfits into complete new looks. A powdery blue took over the runway and we are certain this is going to be the colour of the summer.

Versace

From beginning to end Versace SS22 dished out look after look; from cut-outs and sparkles to latex and prints. From dresses to pantsuits, and two piece sets – Versace gave us all. With this latest collection aiming at the Tik Tok generation of now, Versace showed us a revival of vibrance and playfulness. What better way to end the mid-week MFW round up than with Dua Lipa strutting down the runway in a metallic pink number, fit for a queen, ready to close the show in nothing but style.

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano, a red carpet favourite, showed fantasy evening gowns and luxurious cocktail dresses during NYFW. A section of the show was dedicated to various adaptations of the classic, little black dress – sheer fabrics with graphic bold stitching, exaggerated skirt silhouettes, and roughly textured fabrics elevated the simplicity of a black dress. Siriano also shone with neon greens and yellows, reminding us that this is certainly a collection created for the brightness of Spring.

Collina Strada

Collina Strada is a refreshing breath of clean air in the fashion industry. The brand champions sustainable practices and provides transparency into how its garments are manufactured. Fresh, light and floral themes blended across the assortment of looks – visualise a fairy’s wardrobe and you come close to the beauty of Collina Stada’s collection. Breezy fabrics in silhouettes, from voluptuous bustles and layered skirts to sweet, pastel tank tops and silk dresses, Collina Stada is what we want to wear during sunny days.

Saint Sintra

Saint Sintra debuted at NYFW; whilst only launching in February the brand has become a favourite of Emma Chamberlain, Olivia Rodrigo and Kali Uchis. A psychedelic, Alice-in-Wonderland-esque garden party describes the atmosphere of this show. Sheer fabrics with whimsical crystal patterns, ruffled and scrunched shirts, loosely knitted skirts and bikini tops encompassed a dreamy, yet incredibly stylish, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

Peter Do

Peter Do is certainly a brand to watch with technical skill, architectural design, and simple textiles ensuring chic and wearable pieces. The first Peter Do show ever has proven the power of the brand – presenting neutral basics with ultra-chic tailoring, details which naturally accentuate fabric choices, and infamous leather boots demonstrates the beliefs and staples of the Peter Do brand. The versatility of the collection allows for layering in Winter with lighter fabrics saved for Spring and Summer. Peter Do will definitely be chic and stylish no matter what season it is.

Prabal Gurung

From floral prints on oversized, draped jackets to pink gingham playsuits, boxy white suit jackets paired with delicate corsets and high-waisted trousers, to bold mini dresses entirely covered in multi-coloured feathers, Prabal Gurung presented a little bit of everything. Perhaps this reminds us that femininity and power do not have to be trapped in a box. He closed his Instagram explanation with the powerful quote from the famous fashion critic, Robin Givhan: ‘To be girlish is to be powerful, because power is redefined.’

Moschino

Moschino was as bold and beautiful as ever. Taking inspiration from Fran Drescher’s costumes in The Nanny, Jeremy Scott brought pastel power suits, springtime patterns, and 60s style dresses to the runway. The flamboyancy we expect from Moschino was certainly present in cocktail dresses constructed from pop art fabrics decorated with colourful animal cartoons. This collection proves Spring does not have to be subtle – (as always) boisterous, bold, and bright is definitely in at Moschino.

LaQuan Smith

LaQuan Smith already made history, presenting the first show at the top of the Empire State Building. Such an extravagant venue was fulfilled with gorgeous garments. The show provided the wardrobe we need for any summer getaway – from neutral bikinis, loose cover-ups and sultry dresses with cut-outs, to draped white garments, and rich cobalt and navy blue pieces, LaQuan Smith has got you covered for hot girl summer. His skill to create skin-tight silhouettes which do not seem to restrict ties back to his fashion beginnings creating primarily leggings. LaQuan’s eye for fabrics, silhouettes, and how to flatter the body were all exemplified in this dramatic show.

Phillip Lim

3.1 Phillip Lim’s Spring ready-to-wear collection embodies a cool, chic, and simply stylish wardrobe. Primarily, the collection focuses on neutral basics elevated through complex styling choices, like layering, additional accessories and oversized fits. Earthy greens, oranges, and browns made an appearance alongside multi-coloured check prints. The collection feels easy and wearable – by creating interesting garments in black and white, the pieces are simple to style for a relaxed, chic outfit.

These are only some of the NYFW shows which have occurred so far, we still have many creative powerhouses, like Brandon Maxwell, Rodarte, Kim Shui, and, of course, Tom Ford to come. We’ll be catching you up with unmissable shows still to come this weekend!

As Milan Fashion Week comes to a close with the most in-person runways of the SS21 fashion weeks so far, we have a round-up of this weekend’s highlights.

Saturday

Saturday saw a range of designers and some unexpected surprises. With four physical runways and ten digital, Milan’s ‘show must go on’ attitude persevered giving us high expectations for events that follow and judging by the intergalactic inspiration by Annakiki and the puppet catwalk for Moschino, it’s safe to say no one’s running out of ideas.

Emilio Pucci

Pucci stuck to their early visions for this collection, flaunting soft and light motifs with the use of delicate patterns, mostly signature prints, and 60s shapes and styling, really reverting back to the brands most successful days. There was a purposely pure and innocent feel to this lookbook: minimalist, classic and practical.

Moschino

Moschino | Spring/Summer 2021

Aside from the expected brilliance of the Moschino collection, Jeremy Scott came up with perhaps the best way to have a fashion show during a pandemic: use marionettes. The 41-look collection was made miniature for this year’s runway performance, which could not have been an easy task with all the delicate and detailed items there were. This collection featured an array of fabrics and textured with lots of corseted pieces and quite a few underskirts. Scott’s great designs and the beautiful puppets, the show was just the perfect amount of kitsch for Moschino.

The Giorgio Armani collection stayed classic with the new collection, sporting minimalism and elegance. Armani’s tones of blue, grey, silver and black were prominent, as the lookbook consisted of soft suits, silk pajamas and patterned prints here and there for both the menswear and womenswear.

MSGM Spring/Summer 2021

MSGM opted out of the catwalk with a different concept in mind for Milan Fashion Week; named ‘Self-portrait Of A Generation’, this collection was modelled by twelve women, including an ecologist and a young trans woman, who each styled themselves and directed their own photos. The pieces were full of bold, bright colours, frills and geometric patterns, making it a diverse collection.

It was evident that some of Serafini’s’ lockdown hobbies made it onto the mood board for designer’s collection this year, as the themes of painting and gardening were consistent in the catwalk show. With colourful gingham, corseted pieces and soft blouses throughout, the collection is definitely made for spring.

Sunday

Sunday’s schedule featured some smaller but just as interesting catwalks as the penultimate day of Milan Fashion Week, including ‘Emerging Talents’: Milan’s promotion of young designers. There was also a brilliant digital show dedicated to Italian diversity, shining the spotlight on 5 black italian designers in a fight against the loud presence of systemic racism in the italian fashion industry.

Valentino

Valentino had a diverse range of looks for SS21, displaying a mix of bold floral patterns and frills with a contrast of smart chic monochrome. The collection featured a lot of studded accessories and lace and crochet patterning, perhaps the only constants through the juxtaposing looks.
